      N.p: N.p, circa 1850-59. bronze relief plaque. Fine condition. Approximately 7-1/4 x 10-1/4 inches. Bronze plaque Bronze plaque of a thirty-two star American flag blowing in the breeze merging with the head and torso of a man in uniform, with the words "Follow the flag" in bas relief at the bottom. The man is Winfield Scott Schley (1839 -1900). Schley was a naval officer from the time of his appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1856 and reached the rank of Commodore in 1898 and Rear Admiral in 1899. He was a participant in the battle of Santiago in the Spanish American war.

        THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures for Little Children. After the Fourteenth edition of the celebrated German work.

      Friedrich Volckmar 1850 - Fourth Edition. Published by Friedrich Volckmar, Leipsic. 24 pages printed and hand-coloured on rectos only. Original printed paper-covered boards. Quarto. Fourth English edition. The Leipzig stamp on the cover is dated 1846, but printed Circa 1850.Bound in original covers with loss of some of the printed paper surface mainly around edges and corners; the paper on the covers are generally cracked and rubbed; new linen spine. Some spotting and soiling internally, some old tears have been repaired and page edges strengthened.; One very large tear on page one repaired; pages 23 and 24 have had smaller tears repaired. Pages but generally good and, overall, an acceptable copy of a very early edition. Originally published in Germany in 1845 as Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder, with only 15 pages, the book was expanded and renamed Struwwelpeter in 1847. Hoffmann instructed his publishers to issue the book in strong boards but with a frail paper spine, hoping that children would quickly read the book to pieces, and parents be forced to buy another copy; this accounts for the dearth of copies surviving in original boards. As with all genuine copies of early printings, the government's tax stamp appears on the upper board. The book was first published in English in 1848. After about 1859 the illustrations were changed to show Struwwelpeter with a mop of wavy hair, none of it over his face, as found in the English reprints of today. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      New Haven: T.J. Stafford, 1850. 56pp. Original plain wrappers, stitched as issued. Wraps somewhat soiled and slightly chipped, with one small closed tear from front fore- edge. Title in contemporary manuscript on front wrapper, later institutional bookplate inside front. Tanning and foxing. Good, in original condition. A lurid autobiography written by a Connecticut murderer who also served as a Dragoon in Florida during the Second Seminole War. He claims to relate in the present work "a description of the horrid massacre of two families, and some battles, never before published," and his detailed account of his service from 1835 to 1837 occupies most of the first part of the pamphlet. The Appendix contains his confession to the rape and murder of Emily Cooper, his twelve-year- old cousin, and the address he planned to give at the time of his hanging, in which he blames (among other things) "licentious novels" for leading him astray. This is the second edition, with three added pages containing details of his execution, published after his hanging. OCLC locates only three copies of this edition, at the New- York Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Clements Library; and two copies of the first edition, at Yale and Trinity College.         Autograph Album Owned and Circulated By Kate Bowden at Georgetown Female Seminary, Scott County, Kentucky , 1850-51

      25 leaves filled out by mostly female students at Georgetown Female Seminary mostly signed. Original black leather with gilt stamped design on front and back covers. The Catalogue of the school from 1850-1852 notes that she is enrolled all three years. Additionally, signed by her female friends (mostly noted in the printed catalogue) such as Mollie H. Payne, Ellen Dunn, Bettie M. Craig, Mary H. Brown and some male students at the nearby college [very strict chaperone rules were exercised] some using the classical name Junius, others signing their names. One long poem in German (presumably from an instructor). The calligraphy is beautiful and the sentiments typical of the era. The school has Greek, The long deeply thought from Bettie Craig speaks of their secret vows, their attachment and while these may well have been innocent expressions of deep friendship in the 19th Century, they would certainly have been considered differently in the 21st century.

Folio (400 x 315 mm). An extensive watercolor study of medieval German armor and heraldry, many of the drawings quite accomplished. A manuscript index and marginal captions identify the 94 drawings by family and many by specific historical person, e.g. Prince of Latour Taxis, George Fugger, Georg Pfister, Anthon Haintzlin, Hans Feisch, David Baumgartner, Christopher Relinger, etc. Recent half crimson morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, black morocco label with black title label, with marbled boards.         [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM SAM HOUSTON TO HIS COUSIN, NARCISSA B. HAMILTON, IN EARLY 1850, DISCUSSING HIS FAMILY AND WASHINGTON, D.C. SOCIAL EVENTS]

      Washington, D.C., 1850. [8]pp., on two bifolia. Previously folded. Light staining and several separations to first bifolium. About very good. In a blue morocco box. An effusive and chatty letter from Sam Houston to his cousin, Narcissa B. Hamilton, in January, 1850, from Washington, D.C., during his time as a U.S. Senator. Houston had first met Hamilton, who was from Virginia, when he was in Washington to drum up support for Texas independence in 1834, and his return as a member of Congress allowed him to renew the correspondence. The letter discusses the state of his recent health, describes their children, and gives a humorous appraisal of the capital's social scene. At the outset of the letter, he briefly addresses the continuing effects of the shoulder wounds he received at San Jacinto, saying that, "You will perceive from my hand writing, that the wound in my shoulder has affected my nerves. I thank kind Heaven it is not the effect of age, for in your recollection, you have not seen me in so fine health at this time." The letter goes on affectionately to describe his children: "We have Master Sam, a lad in his seventh year, and his Mother says, 'he is all just such as she would wish him to be.' From this, you will suppose he resembles me. I think he does, in mind & person! Well then we have Nancy, in her fourth year, pretty much Houston only, that she is esteemed beautiful! Next comes Margaret Lea, now in her second year, said to be pretty, but resembles Sam, very much! In short we are greatly blessed in our children! I wish you could see them. You could see them, as [?] wish, as young Highlanders!" After ruminating further on family and health matters, Houston ends his letter with a brief description of social life in Washington: "You will not loose [sic] much by joining in the gayieties of the city this season, as I suppose tho I am not a competent judge, for I do not go to Theatres or Balls. I have attended a few Levees, and have found them extremely crowded. Indeed, they are more crowded than I have seen them, since the days of General Jackson! The demeanor of Mr. Fillmore & his family is very becoming, and makes the Levees agreeable . I see (as the saying is in Texas,) 'the Ladies dress to Kill.' It does seem to me that they dress badly to live! Mrs. Houston don't wear corsetts!!!" A jovial, familial letter from one of the founding fathers of Texas, full of personal detail.

      1850 - Paris: Pelissier, c.1845. Outline colour. 310 x 410mm. A fine map of the world on Mercator's projection, with ornate engraved borders, with medallion allegories of the Four Seasons and vignettes of gods, goddesses, mythical figures, Adam and Eve, astrological symbols and animals. Under the map is a further vingette with Jesus seated on a throne with a cross in one hand. Around him can be seen Napoleon, Socrates, pyramids and a herm. It was published in one of the last decorative atlases, the 'Atlas Universel Illustré'.

Circa 1850, oblong red silk album still with original ties, approximately 360 x 250 mm, 14 x10 inches, 12 paintings of Chinese punishments with blue cloth borders and soft paper backing, 3 paintings have small damage to top inner corner and 1 to lower outer corner, not affecting images, 1 painting with a man holding a lantern has a closed split affecting image, running into his clothes, 60 mm (3 inches), cloth borders of some pictures creased, some corners creased, not affecting images, paintings slightly slipped from the cloth borders, binding has wear to spine with loss of silk, some small chips to covers touched up with matching colour, wear to edges of covers also touched up, silk lifting from boards, slight stain to lower cover, a few of the paper backing sheets have a few small repairs to edges and a few tiny chips, otherwise a good copy. Wood, [c. 1850]. 4to (280 x 220 mm), over 2000 blocks on 198 leaves, including title and index leaf leaves, all printed on rectos only, 6 folding (one torn with minor loss to image), some occasional light spotting, orig. half morocco, spine tooled in gilt, a little rubbed but a very good copy, title stamped on upper cover in gilt. The blocks are arranged in subjects, which include coats of arms, animals and birds, wagons and coaches, a wide range of sailing ships, trades, baker's labels, horse racing and other sports, agricultural subjects, railway trains, printing presses, fists, views of the Crystal Palace, other London buildings, scenery at home and abroad, miniature scripture history illustrations, three picture alphabets, tea and tobacco labels, borders, and other ornaments. Signed blocks include examples by Ebenezer Landells, Orrin Smith, T. S. Adeney, and others. "This unique collection was commenced by Messrs. Vizetelly and Branston, and considerably improved and extended by the late Richard Mason Wood, founder of the firm of Wood and Sharwoods, and further added to by the late Thomas Sharwood, from the sale of Messrs. Alexander Wilson & Son's Foundry, and one hundred new sheets just printed by Wood and Company. The cost of the original Engravings have exceeded the sum of Fifteen Thousand Pounds. This is not only the largest and most varied assortment in the world, but for practical utility, unequalled."—Introduction. Richard Austin, a punch-cutter, founded the Imperial Letter Foundry some time before 1819. Later he was followed by his son George Austin (as Austin & Son in 1824) who succeeded to the business. On the death of George, the foundry was acquired by Richard Mason Wood, who subsequently, in 1833, in partnership with Samuel and Thomas Sharwood, moved to 120, Aldersgate Street, under the name of the Austin Letter Foundry. On Wood's death in 1845 the firm became S. and T. Sharwood. According to Bigmore & Wyman "after the death of the last surviving member of the Sharwoods, Thomas, the foundry was thrown into Chancery. It subsequently passed to two sons [James and Richard Mason] of R. M. Wood. They removed it from Aldergate-street to 89, West Smithfield, and thence to Farringdon-road, and here carried on business besides as printers' brokers, manufactures of materials, also publishing the Typographic Advertiser."         A collection documenting the early life of Samuel Clemens and his family in Iowa

      Various places, mainly Iowa, 1850 TWAIN IN LOVE IN IOWA. This unique collection of photographs, books, letters, and other objects is from the Creel family, Samuel Clemens's relations on his mother's side. One highlight of the collection is the charming ambrotype portrait of young Ella Creel, one of Sam's "favorite companions" and a "one-time sweetheart." The photograph dates to the time of that youthful flirtation, when Ella was in her teens and Sam was about twenty. In 1854 Sam Clemens's older brother Orion left Hannibal, Missouri and moved with his wife Mollie to her hometown, Keokuk, Iowa. They were accompanied by their widowed mother Jane, who had family in Iowa. Young Sam Clemens traveled east working as a printer and then came to Iowa. He worked on his brother's newspaper in Keokuk in 1855-56 before becoming an apprentice riverboat pilot. Later Orion and his wife moved away, but by 1874 they had returned, and their mother Jane moved to Keokuk as well. As a result, Twain had early and enduring ties to the area and its people. He referred to his Iowa relatives in his correspondence, and he visited Keokuk on a number of occasions throughout his life. The collection, which includes a number of otherwise unknown objects, comprises: 1. Mary Eleanor "Ella" Creel (1841-1894). Photograph portrait as a teenage girl. Ambrotype. Ella Creel was the daughter of Mary Ann Patterson and Robert Paxton Creel and thus was a distant cousin of Sam Clemens on his mother's side. In April 1859 Sam Clemens became a licensed riverboat pilot on the Mississippi between Keokuk, Iowa and New Orleans. He asked his mother and a friend to chaperone Ella Creel on a trip to New Orleans on a boat he piloted, proudly taking the three women on a tour of the city when they arrived. According to Twain's biographer Albert Bigelow Paine, Ella was one of Sam's "favorite companions" and a "one-time sweetheart." 2. Mary Eleanor "Ella" Creel (1841-1894). Inscribed by Creel on verso "For David C. Walker from his Grand Pa." Father of Sam Clemens's sweetheart Ella, Robert P. Creel was cousin of Samuel Clemens's mother Jane Lampton Clemens. Creel's father John married Polly Casey, a sister of Margaret Casey, who married Benjamin Lampton and was mother of Jane Lampton (later Clemens), the author's mother. Curiously, Robert Creel was succeeded in the Iowa state legislature in 1856 by a man named Tom Sawyer. It has been suggested that this is the source of the name of Twain's character. 6. In this chatty letter to their mother, Sam's sister discusses family matters, refers to Orion and Mollie (with whom Jane was living in Keokuk), and gives reading recommendations for her brother "Sammy." Pamela is said to have been the model for Tom's cousin Mary in Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. 11. Jane Clemens (Samuel Clemens's mother), signed napkin. Linen napkin or handkerchief with the ink signature of Jane Clemens. Jane was a major influence in Sam's life, and she figures in several of his books, most notably as Tom Sawyer's Aunt Polly. Opera completa I moti del 1848, detti anche rivoluzione del '48 o Primavera dei popoli furono un'ondata di moti rivoluzionari borghesi che sconvolsero l'Europa nel 1848 e nel 1849. Scopo dei moti fu abbattere i governi della Restaurazione per sostituirli con governi liberali. Il loro impatto storico fu così profondo e violento che nel linguaggio corrente è entrata in uso l'espressione «fare un quarantotto» per sottintendere una improvvisa confusione e scompiglio. La prima agitazione europea del 1848 si verificò in Italia: la rivoluzione siciliana che esplose il 12 gennaio di quell'anno, che rappresentò la prima miccia dell'esplosione europea. L'insurrezione siciliana, infatti, spinse in un primo momento i Borbone a concedere il ritorno nell'Isola alla costituzione del 1812. Seguì una rivoluzione a Napoli, il 27, che costrinse, due giorni dopo, Ferdinando II a promettere una Costituzione, promulgata l'11 febbraio. Lo stesso 11 febbraio Leopoldo II di Toscana, cugino primo dell'imperatore Ferdinando I d'Austria, concesse la Costituzione, nella generale approvazione dei suoi sudditi. L'esempio borbonico fu seguito da Carlo Alberto di Savoia con lo Statuto Albertino e da Papa Pio IX con lo Statuto Fondamentale. Solo il re piemontese mantenne però lo Statuto. In Sicilia il parlamento proclamò in marzo l'indipendenza, che sarebbe durata fino al maggio 1849. Nel napoletano la concessione e la successiva repressione delle libertà costituzionali, portò dal maggio al settembre di quell'anno a una serie di moti. In tutto il Regno Lombardo-Veneto scoppiarono rivolte, come le Cinque giornate di Milano che sfociarono nella prima guerra di indipendenza. Nello Stato Pontificio una rivolta interna estromise papa Pio IX dai suoi poteri temporali e portò alla costituzione della Repubblica Romana. La rivoluzione delle Cinque giornate di Milano e altre proteste indussero il Re Carlo Alberto a dichiarare guerra all'Austria. Le truppe vennero presto sconfitte e solo quelle francesi poterono far retrocedere gli austriaci. La successiva ascesa al trono di Vittorio Emanuele II fece del Piemonte il motore propulsore del processo di unificazione italiana che tuttavia si sarebbe ottenuto solo nel 1861. Per quanto i Moti del '48 furono sedati abbastanza velocemente, le vittime furono decine di migliaia: il destino della democrazia europea ci è sfuggito di mano dichiarerà Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Gli storici concordano che la Primavera dei popoli fu, alla fin fine, soprattutto un sanguinoso fallimento, se si eccettua la concessione dello Statuto Albertino nel Regno di Sardegna da parte di Carlo Alberto di Savoia, l'unica costituzione non revocata di quelle concesse o votate nel 1848-49. Vi furono tuttavia radicali e notevoli effetti a lungo termine: Germania e Italia sarebbero presto arrivate all'unificazione facendo leva anche sulla necessità di autodeterminazione dei popoli. Analogamente l'Ungheria sarebbe giunta ad un parziale riconoscimento della propria autonomia (a discapito della popolazione slava) grazie all'Ausgleich del 1867. In Prussia e Austria fu abolito il feudalesimo, mentre in Russia fu eliminata la servitù della gleba nel 1861. L'Opera vanta 306 tavole allegorico - caricaturali sullo stato dell'Italia del tempo, incisione su rame ricca di significato e rappresentazione mediante satirica dissacrante della condizione della nostra penisola oppressa. Le tavole furono in parte riprese dal giornale romano Don Pirlone, quotidiano, uscito dal 1settembre 1848 al 2 luglio 1849 (con una interruzione dl 29 aprile al 7 maggio 1849), ma in parte furono realizzate appositamente per questa opera. Tra gli incisori sono presenti anche i nomi di Ratti, Vaiani, Monneret, Gallucci, Pichi, Masutti. Il titolo Don Pirlone deriva quasi sicuramente da una maschera creata dallo scrittore satirico Girolamo Gigli (1660 - 1722). Si trattava di una specie di Tartufo molieresco, ispirato ad una figura reale, il canonico Feliciati di Sarteano. Nei tre volumi l'avvocato Michelangiolo Pinto raccolse tutto il pubblicato del giornale, che fu il più temuto e allo stesso tempo il più apprezzato tra i molteplici giornali satirici che si pubblicavano nella Roma di Pio IX all'epoca delle grandi riforme volute dal Papa. I romani gli dedicarono perfino una canzone (Davanti un numero di gran persone - che mi salutano Viva Pirlone!). Anche gli avversari politici ne riconobbero l'efficacia e la bellezza delle tavole. Il 22 marzo 1849 apparve con il cappello frigio per incitare alla resistenza contro i francesi. Il Pinto, nato a Roma nel 1818, spentosi nel 1910, già comproprietario ed articolista del celebre periodico satirico "DonPirlone", riparò a Torino dopo la caduta della Repubblica Romana; scrivendo la presente opera egli vi trasfuse lo stesso mordace spirito polemico che aveva animato il quasi omonimo periodico: "Edotti dall'esperienza, sappiamo quale profonda traccia lascino nell'animo umano gli incancellabili colpi del ridicolo".
