Original sepia ink drawing, 4.5 x 7.5 inches, signed "E. Lear" in the lower left corner. Laid down on light card stock

1848-1849, 1848. Glue residue at the extreme right edge of the sheet from where this was once mounted, not effecting the image; small mended tear in the lower right of the image.. A scene with a group of men with rifles in the fore- and background, relaxing by a hillside. Lear's affinity for such serene gatherings reappears as a theme throughout his career. This is very likely from the time of his earliest travels to Egypt in 1848-1849.

The Past, the Present, and the Future

Philadelphia: Carey & Hart,, 1848. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine gilt, decoration to boards and spine in blind, yellow endpapers. Spine and edges of boards faded, ink stain to foot of spine, slight dampstaining to top edge of front board and fore edge of text block, small chips to fore edge of front free endpaper and initial leaf, the occasional minor blemish to contents. A very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "To J. W. Collyn with the regards of the Author". In The Past, the Present, and the Future, Carey (1793?1879) vigorously appeals for tariff protection and attacks the Ricardian theory of rent. He argues that "the historical sequence of cultivation at least in the United States was the exact reverse of the one proposed by Ricardo, namely, from inferior to superior land, apparently because returns from the application of capital to land yield increasing rather than diminishing returns" (Blaug). The similarity of ideas between Bastiat and Carey is well documented, particularly the close parallelism in their theories of the origin of land value. However, Haney observes that "Carey impresses the reader as decidedly the more original, and on the whole his work antedated Bastiat's" (Haney, p. 338). Carey's ideas caused much controversy and were refuted by Mill in his Principles of Political Economy (1848).

John Ellis Wool (1784-1869) was second in command at the Battle of Buena Vista, and was "largely responsible for the victory of Buena Vista" (DAB).

Should always be in the possession of each Keeper and constantly referred to.? The final 5 pages contain a detail list of "Game Killed by [William] Bell" from the year 1848. Bound in contemporary quarter roan over marbled boards (corners and extremities worn, internally excellent). Bookplate of Wyndham Baron Leconfield (see below), with the engraver's name in microscopic lettering: "C.W. Sherborn, Sc[ulpsit] 1894. Fascinating manuscript Journal of a known English game-keeper. The very long title inside of the front cover reads: "1848: A Journal of observations of facts connected with game of all sorts, birds, beasts, and fishes and any circumstances of Natural History that may be worthy to be recorded. Mode of keeping the journal. It must be understood that no fact is to be recorded that the person does not personally observe and know to be true. All entries should be made at the time of observation and nothing trusted to memory, which is often treacherous and leads to errors. The chief use of these annual records consists in their truth and exactness. The following are some of the subjects to which attention must be give, and each subject entered at its own letter in the ledger." William Bell gives additional details about the intended scope of the MS and the methodology of its compilation. For birds: "Date and place where the first [bird] egg was seen, also when the first brood was observed, and where, &c." For hares and field-fare: "Date when the first young are seen and where, &c." For dogs: "Any think remarkable in their habits, breeding, diseases, &c." Bell provides a valuable assessment of his work as a game-keeper: "An intelligent Keeper with his eyes open and his wits about him may collect and furnish a great deal of valuable information on the above named and many other subjects, to make this book useful." At the time the present MS was compiled, Westward Park (Cumberland) was owned by George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield (1787-1869) for whom the Journal was written, and who is named throughout simply as "The Gen." As we read from the 1847 Cumberland Directory, the woods of Westward Park contained 400 acres. Written in the MS itself: "This Book to be delivered at Cockermouth Castle (Cumberland) at the end of the year, when another will be given." Whereas the Journal is named "No. 2" we have been unable to located any other survival from the series. Evidently the present MS remained at Cockermouth Castle, and at some point after 1894 the bookplate of "Wyndham Baron Leconfield" was affixed inside the front cover; this individual was Henry Wyndham, 2nd Baron Leconfield (1830-1901). Following the alphabetical entries is a long series of "Observations," some of which are here transcribed: ?Cucoo On the 4th May. I heard the Cucoo in the high park. Curlew on the 25th of August. I shot a Curlew on Thistlebottom although a great number breed on our ground, it is the first I ever killed after the twelfth of August. About the last week of July or first week of August you may see dozens of them but they always leave the ground before the twelfth for the sea shore. I frequently find a nest they lay four eggs. The color of the Plover?s egg but much larger being the size of a very large duck egg. I like to see plenty of Curlew?s. They always give warning if any person be on the ground with dogs. You may hear them whistling and baiting the intruders for a mile.? ?Shooting in General. On the 5th Jan. The Gen. and Mr. Laverick came to shoot in the woods. The first day Mr. Laverick had fourteen shots and killed seven, 4 Woodcocks and 3 Cock Pheasants. The Gen. had no chances almost that day. The next day Mr. Bragg came. I don?t know how many shots Mr. Laverick had that day. He killed 1 Woodcock, 1 Wen Phes. and a hare or two. The first shots was misses. The Gen. killed 1 Woodcock, 1 Cock Phes. The best shot I ever saw and five or six hares. If the Gen. had had a dog or two he would have killed a great deal more. I never saw anyone yet that could shoot the Gen. in the woods. They are often very quick and ugly shots. The more difficult the chance, the more sure is the Gen. to kill. I don?t think so much of Mr. Laverick?s shooting in the woods. He seems so agitated when his dogs has a point. I had often heard it said that he never missed but I soon saw different. The dogs made a point on Realthwaite Green at a Woodcocks. The Gen. killed it very quick when it was half way to the ground?..The Gen., me and a boy was standing in the line. He (Laverick) hit the Gen. but not to draw blood. He need not have shot it as the Gen. had disabled it before we could have taken it up. Mr. Laverick has a very awkward way in carrying his gun??? ?Snaring on Monday 17th April. Hodgson the policeman of Wigton caught Scott the besom maker that we had a warrant out against. It was in Oct. when we caught him. He was fined 1 pound and 15 sixpences, all the Potters in Wigton subscribed for him and paid the fine. I believe the potters and broom makers are most of them poachers. The best plan is to keep them out of our woods altogether. They only give a few shillings for the Birch tops every year.? ?Phest [Pheasant] and Par. [Partridge] shooting. On the 6th Oct. the Gen., Mr. Bragg, Capt. Grant and Capt. Flemming came to shoot at Westward. They shot two day. They killed 15 hares, 14 partridges and 2 Pheasants. The Gen. and Mr. Bragg beat the two Captains.? Further literature: Mannix & Whellan, "History, Gazetteer and Directory of Cumberland" (1847).

Autograph letter signed ("AVHumboldt"). Potsdam, 11. VI. 1848.

1848. Large 8vo. 1 p. on double leaf. Written during the European Revolutions of 1848 to an unnamed minister about Arnold Mendelssohn (1817-1854), a cousin of the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: "Darf ich es wagen, theuerste Excellenz, mitten unter den zunehmenden unheimlichen Bewegungen der Hauptstadt Sie an Ihr Wohlwollen für mich, an die Bittschrift zu erinnern, die Sie die Gewogenheit haben wollten, in meinem Namen (in Angelegenheit der hoch betrübten Mendelsohnschen Familie) dem König zu überreichen. Die Sache liegt mir schmerzhaft am Herzen! [...]". - In 1846, Arnold Mendelssohn had become involved in the so-called "Casket Affair", which ruined his life: for the theft of a casket, the content of which was thought to be vital to Ferdinand Lassalle's court case, he was sentenced to five years imprisonment and lost the privilege to practise as physician. His accomplices, Alexander Oppenheim and Lassalle, were acquitted. Alexander von Humboldt interceded on his behalf, and Mendelssohn was pardoned in 1849, but was banished from Germany. - Somewhat wrinkled; the reverse of fol. 2 slightly spotty.

Vanity Fair A Novel without a Hero

London: Bradbury and Evans,, 1848. With Illustrations on Steel and Wood by the Author. Octavo (206 × 128 mm). Later 19th century full calf by Riviere & Son, richly gilt spine, dark red morocco label, two-line gilt border on sides, all edges gilt, richly gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Etched frontispiece, vignette title, 38 plates, 83 wood-engraved vignettes and 66 wood-engraved initials after Thackeray. A couple of slight abrasions to spine, customary oxidisation or foxing to plates. A handsomely bound copy, with the leaf before the title page advertising The Great Hoggarty Diamond. First edition; of Vanity Fair's traditional points of issue this copy has the drop-head title in rustic lettering to page 1, the "Marquis of Steyne" vignette on page 336 (later suppressed), and "Mr Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" (on page 453, line 31), although, as it was originally published in twenty parts between January 1847 and July 1848, a number of these points would have been amended before serialization was completed and the book form issued by the publisher. "Modern editions of this classic novel almost invariably omit Thackeray's vignettes and often give only a selection from his etchings. The reader is deprived thereby not only of much amusement but also of important clues to the meaning of the story" (Ray).

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 24. IX. [1848].

1848. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Monument to Monr De La Perouse and his companions erected at Botany Bay

Exeter: W.Spreat, 1848. Handcoloured lithograph, 155 x 215 mm., fine. A fine Australian view by Robert Marsh Westmacott (1801-1870) from his Sketches in Australia, a series of tinted lithographic plates of Sydney and Harbour areas, mountains and southern coastal regions of New South Wales, "drawn from nature".The French erected this monument to the memory of the scientific and ill-fated De la Perouse, and his companions, whose fate for many years was uncertain, no tidings were heard of them since the expedition left Botany Bay in 1788 having spent several weeks in the company of the First Fleet.Little is known of Westmacott, except that he was a captain in the 4th (King's Own) Regiment, and that he spent the early 1840s in Australia. His published views represent the last in the chronology of work by military or naval officers in the romantic landscape tradition of the early 19th century.

THE LATTER-DAY SAINTS' EMIGRANTS' GUIDE: BEING A TABLE OF DISTANCES SHOWING ALL THE SPRINGS, CREEKS, RIVERS, HILLS, MOUNTAINS, CAMPING PLACES, AND ALL OTHER NOTABLE PLACES, FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS, TO THE VALLEY OF THE GREAT SALT LAKE

St. Louis, 1848. 24pp. 12mo. Later plain wrappers. Small paper abrasion below author's name on titlepage, small chip to upper margin of one leaf, just touching the border, old dampstain to bottom corner of last few leaves, bound close at inner margin. Very good. In a half morocco box, spine gilt. The supremely rare first edition of "one of the most utilized and quoted authorities for the emigrant route through South Pass to Salt Lake" - Wagner-Camp. Decker referred to the work as "[p]erhaps the most accurate and certainly one of the scarcest of all overland guides." The guide describes sources of water, topographical features, camping sites, and provides distances in miles from point to point, measured by Orson Pratt's "roadometer," all intended for the Mormon emigrants moving west in the mid-19th century. Clayton had been a prominent member of the advance Mormon migration in the spring of 1847, traveling west from Mormon Winter Quarters on the Missouri River to Salt Lake. Clayton was the person to whom Prophet Joseph Smith revealed the doctrine of plural marriages in 1843, and then he served as clerk of the Mormon camp at Council Bluffs before arriving at Salt Lake. As such, Clayton was able to compose the present work from personal observations. Thomas W. Streeter held Clayton's work in high esteem, praising the guide in his sale catalog: "This first detailed guide book to the country west of the Rockies is one of the basic books on the opening of the West and the principal source for all later guides." Howes describes the work as the "[b]est guide for the itinerary covered, Council Bluffs to Salt Lake" and affords the book a "dd" for rarity, his highest classification reserved for "superlatively rare books, almost unobtainable...." The Streeter copy sold for $2,000 in 1968, and now resides at the Clements Library. Only a few copies are known in private hands, and only seven copies reside in institutions, namely at the University of Michigan, Clements Library (Streeter copy), the Mormon Church Archives, the Huntington Library, the Newberry Library (Graff copy), New York Public Library, Harvard, and Yale (Coe copy).
