Biographical Notices of Some of the Most Distinguished Jewish Rabbies, and Translations of Portions of Their Commentaries, and Other Works, with Illustrative Introductions and Notes

Stanford and Swords, New York 1847 - Octavo. (xi) 245pp. Brown cloth boards, with blind stamped ruling on front cover and gilt lettering on spine. The publication was created for the purposes of English speaking non-Jews, and more specifically aimed at Christian missionaries, as a reference and introductory overview, to acquaint themselves with the life and work (biblical commentaries) of some of the most famous and respected Jewish scholars, throughout history. As the author states in the preface, in reference to the mission to proselytize, "It must be obvious to every reflecting mind, that, in order to insure probable success in an object so interesting and important, it is essentially necessary to obtain some knowledge of the state of Judaism in the world, of its leading articles of religious belief, and also of the principles and views developed in the works of their standard authorities." Rabbis discussed include Judah Halevi, Ibn Ezra, Maimonides, Abarbanel, and Saadia Gaon. A biographical clipping on the author is pasted in, opposite the title page, and a clipping about William Wadden Turner is laid in. Binding with some light staining, smudges and scratches to covers, and light rubbing to corners. Head, tail and back hinge of spine with some chipping. Some staining along edges of book. Interior with some age toning to pages, and some light water staining and foxing throughout. Starting at interior back cover. Binding in overall good-, interior in overall good+ condition. Parte prima [-seconda]. Pisa, Tipografia Vannucchi, 1847-1851

Tipografia Vannucchi, 1847-1851. A work in two volumes, 220x130 mm. I. xiv (including half title), 546, [4] pp. Five lithographic plates (one chromolithographic; rather spotted the plates bound between pp. 164-165 and pp. 210-211); one folding diagram. Illustrations and diagrams in text. II. 614 (including half title), [2] pp. Illustrations and diagrams in text. Uniformly bound in contemporary quarter leather, over marbled boards. Spine into compartments, title and number of volume lettered gilt. In the first volume pale red silk bookmark. Edges blue sprinkled. Leather a bit rubbed at head, corners slightly bumped. A very good copy, light spotting and browning, specially in the second volume. A bit loose some leaves of first volume. The most important work written by the Italian geologist, the second volume published posthumous. ?Though cut short of reaching full maturity, his ability as a consolidator and synthetizer was already evident from his last papers and his Trattato di Geologia. The methodological approach of his work, the vastness of his interests and solidity of his logics on general problems, his skill in regional synthesis, combined with his original comparative approach, force the conclusions that, had he lived, he would have continued his brilliant and steadfast ascent among the distinguished pioneers of geology (B. D?Argenio, Leopoldo Pilla, p. 223)?.

1847. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). Vivat Justizia! [...]". - Horizontal sowie im Mittelfalz durchgerissen; Falteinrisse.

Kokon bokuseki kantei benran [trans.: Compendium of Appraisals of Painters of Ancient & Modern Times or Guide to Japanese Seals & Signatures].

Numerous woodcuts in the text. Seven vols. Oblong 8vo (shuchin bon), orig. decorated wrappers, upper covers with orig. block-printed title labels, modern stitching. Tokyo, Kyoto, & Osaka: [Preface to Vol. I dated 1847; Preface to Vol. V dated 1854, and colophon of final volume dated 1855]. First edition of this famous book which is still used as a reference work for art historians, dealers, and collectors to determine the artist, calligrapher, poet, philosopher, and medical physician through their signatures and ownership seals. Biographical sketches are provided. The first two volumes are devoted to Confucian philosophers, Vols. III and IV to waka poets, V and VI to artists and calligraphers, and the final volume to prominent medical doctors. Hundreds of seals and signatures are depicted. The book is printed in a most unusual format for a Japanese book of the period: a narrow oblong octavo -- shuchin bon -- a book small enough to carry in one's kimono sleeve. Kawakita (1818-68), wrote several other works including a well-known travel guide to Kyoto. Fine set and rare in the first edition. The final leaves of Vol. VII are a little wormed (final leaf with small loss of text). .

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM AN OREGON PIONEER REGARDING LAND CLAIMS IN MISSOURI]

[Polk County, Or.], 1847. [1]p. on single letter sheet, 7 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches, docketed on verso. Tear along lower left edge, affecting two words. Old, light fold lines. Very good. An interesting letter from an important western pioneer, attempting to wrap up affairs back home. Oregon pioneer Lindsay Applegate writes his brother, Lisbon Applegate, in Missouri, asking his assistance in settling land claims there. He describes the nearly five hundred acres he owns there, and the various attempts he has made to sell the land. He asks his brother to do what he can in expediting the sale of the land, "as a small sum in hand would be better to me than a large one in expectation," and promises to "write more at length by the emigrants next spring." The letter provides informative details on mid-19th-century frontier economics. Lindsay Applegate was an important early Oregon pioneer. After twelve years' residence in Missouri, he went to Oregon in the "great caravan of 1843," the first overland settlers to cross the Oregon trail. He settled in southern Oregon, and the first treaty with the Umpqua Valley Indians was signed in his log cabin in 1854. He formed a company for service in the Rogue River War in 1853, and served as an agent to the Klamath Reservation. This letter perhaps went back across the overland trail.         Gesetz der Urgesundheitskunde. Erneuert zu München, am 21. und 22. Iuli 1847.

München, 1847. Lithographierter Einblattdruck. 32 x 38,5 cm. Mehrfach gefaltet. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Autograph letter signed (within the text). "4 Hobart Place Eaton Sqa.", i. e. London, 28. IV. 1847.

1847. 8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. To Mrs. Erskine, possibly the wife of the Scottish orientalist and historian William Erskine: "Mr. Mendelssohn presents his Compts. to Mrs. Erskine & regrets most sincerely not to be able to accept of Mrs. Erskine's very kind invitation; as he must leave London already next week he is not sure whether he will be able to thank Mrs. Erskine in person for her kind note, but he hopes to find an opportunity of doing so [...]". - Mendelssohn was known to have been in London in April 1847, to hear Jenny Lind sing in Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable". Mendelssohn greatly admired Lind and in the 1840s she became a protégée - it was rumoured that in 1847 he had written to her to suggest an elopement, though she was married at the time. - On laid paper watermarked "J. WHATMAN", with two early horizontal folds, in very good condition. - Though not formally signed, the use of his name at the beginning is effectively a signature.

LETTER SIGNED FROM JOHN SUTTER TO COLONEL JOHN FREMONT PRESENTING THE BILL FOR THE USE OF SUTTER'S FORT (FORT SACRAMENTO) DURING THE ANNEXATION OF CALIFORNIA].

New Helvetia [Sacramento], Ca. April 24, 1847. - [3]pp. with integral address leaf. Quarto. Light stain, archival repair to loss in blank area of address leaf and to a small hole affecting four letters on first leaf, not affecting readability. In a cloth folder, printed paper labels. A very important letter from the Swiss-born Sutter just a year before the famous discovery of placer gold at his mill attached to his "New Helvetia" settlement along the Sacramento River, and written at a critical turning point in California's early history, directly relating to the American occupation of California, and furthermore referencing the Donner tragedy. John C. Fremont first saw Sutter's Fort in 1844 on his first expedition to California. Against the advice of the Washoe Indians he crossed the Sierras at Carson's Pass in midwinter and the party arrived at Sutter's in March of 1844, spending a month there to recuperate. Fremont was there again towards the end of 1845 and stayed another month. When Fremont next returned it was mid-July in 1846. He raised the American flag and renamed the adobe structure "Fort Sacramento," leaving Edward Kern in command. By the time Sutter apologetically presents this bill to Fremont, California was firmly in American hands. The letter reads, in part: "Dear Sir, By Capt Kern who leaves today for Monterey I take the liberty of sending you the annexed a/c against the U.S. Fort for rent of Fort Sacramento and dwelling houses for use of the families of the U.S. Volunteers. I bring it up to the time of the receipt of the letter of Capt J.B. Hull, ordering the discharge of the Garrison although the Soldiers have been in active service under Capt Kern and Lieut. Woodworth U.S.N. some one month & half since and in fact the Garrison was not discharged untill the 18th of April and the dwellings are still occupied by the Volunteer and emigrant families. Can I ask you to use y[our] influence to have the a/c credited or do me the favour of informing me to whom to apply for the adjustment of said a/c. I take the liberty of writing you on the subject as you are the only officer of the Govt that knows anything about the value of the place. By complying with the above request you will confer a great favor which will be reciprocated." The "emigrant families" to which Sutter refers are some remnants of the Donner party who had been stranded near Truckee during the preceding winter. The rescue expeditions were taking place from Sutter's fort as this letter was written, and the last survivor reached there on April 29, three days after the composition of this letter. On the third page, in neatly ruled tabular form, Sutter sets out the account between "The United States of America" and himself for "Military Operations in California" during 1846 and 1847. The bill specifies "Rent of Fort Sacramento and four Dwellings for Volunteer families," for seven-and-a- half months, and the total (based on a rate of $1,000 per month) comes to $7,500. A significant communication between two legendary figures in both western Americana and the history of California, emanating from the fledgling years of California statehood.

Condition: Bound in a contemporary half calf, marbled boards, marbled endpapers, some small browning and light handling and age toning. A good to VG copy of this rare Dumas "1st edition".         Autograph letter signed "G. Verdi" to the librettist Francesco Piave concerning Jérusalem

      - 3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Paris, September 3, 1847. On stationery with a small crest blindstamped to upper right corner. In Italian (with translation). Verdi explains that Jérusalem, a French adaptation of I Lombardi, will be similar to Rossini's adaptation of Mosè in Egitto. His work for the Opéra prevents him from writing a work for Venice, and he confesses that he would rather not write an opera for the publisher Francesco Lucca. Although his health has improved, he is extremely tired. He gives his regards to numerous friends. "I received your dearest letter with great joy and am mortified that I did not answer the one you sent to London. Anyway, I cannot write this Carnevale in Venice: I have a lot to do here for the Opéra. I will certainly not write the Gastone, as you say, but it will be an adaptation of I Lombardi, adding new pieces, and adjusting it here and there as Rossini did with the new Mosè, etc. . Regarding the libretto, I will try to do my best not to disappoint you, but I cannot promise you anything now because I have no time to think about what I will do. I would do anything to get rid of Lucca's opera. Oh, if only I could not work!! Do you understand this fine word? . Not to work."Very slightly worn and foxed; creased at folds; occasional smudging, not affecting legibility. "Verdi's adaptation of I Lombardi as Jérusalem was his first attempt to conquer the all important stage of the Paris Opéra. This letter gives a vivid impression of his life at the height of his 'anni di galera', when his operas were in such demand that he exhausted himself fulfilling commissions. The wife of the impresario Francesco Lucca had told Verdi that her husband was unable to sleep for the fact that he had not been able to have one of Verdi's operas for his house. Finally Verdi agreed to write Il corsaro for Lucca, an opera with a libretto by Piave, that the composer felt to be something of a potboiler." Sotheby's auction catalogue, December 1, 1994. Jérusalem was first performed at the Opéra on November 26, 1847 and Il Corsaro at the Teatro Grande in Trieste on October 25, 1848.Piave (1810-1876) and Verdi "began a long and successful collaboration from Ernani (1844) to La forza del destino (1862). During these years Piave supplied Verdi with the texts for I due Foscari (1844), Macbeth (1847), Il corsaro (1848), Stiffelio (1850), Rigoletto (1851), La traviata (1853), Simon Boccanegra (1857) and Aroldo (1857). [He] had a wide vocabulary and a facile pen, and an uncanny ability for turning Verdi's drafts into verse with an economy of words that satisfied Verdi's insistence on brevity and provided him with the striking, illuminating expressions he sought. It was Piave's willingness to meet Verdi's detailed requirements which provided the basis of their work together, and it is on this partnership that his reputation as a librettist must rest."         Eigenh. Brief mit U. Breslau, 18. VIII. 1847.

1847. 1 S. 4to. "Ew.
