The first six books of The Elements of Euclid

London: William Pickering,, 1847. in which coloured diagrams and symbols are used instead of letters for the greater ease of learners. Quarto (236 x 188 mm). Contemporary dark red cross-grain morocco, spine lettered in gilt, blind rules, purple morocco-grain cloth sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Geometric diagrams printed in red, blue and yellow; printed in Caslon old-face type with ornamental initials by C. Whittingham of Chiswick. Cloth on front cover a little faded, occasional spotting to text (a problem endemic in all copies of this book) but somewhat less than usual, an excellent copy. First edition of this celebrated book, the most interesting and inventive attempt to revisualise the classic ur-text of geometry by printing the diagrams in various colours, a method which stretched the printers' skills to their utmost. Oliver Byrne (c.1810?c.1890) is described on the title page as "Surveyor of Her Majesty's Settlements in the Falkland Islands and Author of Numerous Mathematical Works". He was appointed professor of mathematics, at the College for Civil Engineering, Putney, at the age of 20. The 1871 census lists his place of birth as Leyden, Holland.

On the inhalation of the vapour of ether.

      - London: The London Medical Gazette [printed by Wilson and Ogilvy], 1847. 8vo (20.4 x 12.8 cm). 10 pp., two woodcut illustrations in the text. Printed front wrapper. Blind wrappers. Preserved in an elegant 20th century half calf drop box (23.0 x 16.3 x 2.0 cm); spine with five raised bads and gilt title.l The extremely rare offprint of the true first edition of John Snow's description and illustration of his breakthrough invention, the first apparatus, which could regulate the amount of ether vapour inhaled by the patient. The medical doctor Snow (1813-1858) was "an English physician and a leader in the adoption of anaesthesia and medical hygiene. He is considered one of the fathers of modern epidemiology, in part because of his work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in Soho, London, in 1854. Snow was one of the first physicians to study and calculate dosages for the use of ether and chloroform as surgical anaesthetics, allowing patients to undergo surgical and obstetric procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. He designed the apparatus to safely administer ether to the patients and also designed a mask to administer chloroform. He personally administered chloroform to Queen Victoria when she gave birth to the last two of her nine children" (Wikipedia). Snow first described his inhaler in this paper published in the London Medical Gazette, volume 4. Later in the same year he published a book in which he again described his revolutionary apparatus, which by then had been slightly modified. This is the Haskell F. Norman copy, with his small bookplate on the verso of the blind wrapper. Spine gutter with some japanese paper repairs; lacks last blank, otherwise very good, clean, and as described in Christie's catalogue of the Norman Library.         Narrative of the Surveying Voyage of H.M.S. Fly, commanded by Captain F.P. Blackwood, R.N. in Torres Strait, New Guinea, and other islands of the Eastern Archipelago..

London: T. & W. Boone, 1847. Some very light spotting but a fine copy.. Two volumes, octavo, two folding maps and 19 plates, three line-engraved views, and four natural history plates, textual illustrations, with various publisher's advertisements including for Leichhardt & Stokes; a very attractive set in the original and unfaded blue-grey blind-stamped cloth. First edition: a very good copy, its original binding in fine condition, of this important surveying voyage of coastal Australia. Jukes' account is particularly important for his description of the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Torres Strait, and includes an impressively detailed map of the north-east coast from Endeavour River north to New Guinea. The Fly, Captain Blackwood, sailed from Falmouth on 11 April 1842 with the cutter Bramble. Jukes sailed as naturalist to the expedition, and with his captain's consent wrote the official narrative. The survey of Torres Strait and of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the various New Guinea explorations, were all of great importance. The proper scientific understanding of the Barrier Reef could not begin until the completion of the survey, which Jukes charted for the first time in detail. Jukes' own close examination of the Reef was also significant, and his chapter on the subject 'is an invaluable record. His observations strongly supported Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs…' (Davidson). Indeed, Jukes' interest in coral formation is neatly summarised by the account's terrific opening line, 'I landed for the first time in my life on a coral island.'Ingleton notes: 'the Admiralty decided in 1841 to have the Great Barrier Reefs explored and to have the gaps surveyed in order that some means might be devised for marking the most eligible of these openings, in order that they could be recognised in due time and passed through in comparative safety… The expedition was noteworthy for being the first to be despatched to Australia on a purely surveying mission…' (Charting a Continent, pp. 61-66).Twelve of the plates are notably fine aquatints by Harden S. Melville, who published his own illustrated work on the voyage (Sketches in Australia and the Adjacent Islands, 1849).

        The New Zealanders Illustrated.

London McLean 1847 - First edition in book form. Folio. Additional hand-coloured lithographed title-page, 60 hand-coloured lithographs, Angas (1822-1886), was perhaps the most brilliant British depictor of ethnographic types. To perfect himself as a draughtsman, in 1842, he studied anatomical drawing in London, and also learned the art of lithography. In September 1843 he went to South Australia, a colony of which his father was one of the founders. There he joined several of (Sir) George Grey's expeditions, and made sketches in watercolours of the scenery, aborigines, and natural history of South Australia. Proceeding to New Zealand, he travelled over eight hundred miles on foot in the wildest regions, and made sketches of the country as he journeyed. Returning to England, he published his sketches in 1847 in two folio volumes, entitled 'South Australia Illustrated' and 'The New Zealanders Illustrated.' These, along with his South African volume, form a cornerstone of colour-plate travel literature. This work features marvellous plates of the Maori and their environment. Angas depicts them swinging from a pole by rope; their tattoos, etc. Abbey Travel 589; Colas 132; Tooley 61; Hocken p129; Taylor p152. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Autobiography of Sir Harry Smith

1847 - (PATTON, George S.) (SMITH, Harry) SMITH, G.C. Moore, editor. The Autobiography of Sir Harry Smith 1787-1819. London: John Murray, 1910. Octavo, modern maroon library buckram, printed paper spine label, renewed endpapers. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $7000.Later edition of this firsthand account of Smith's military service in the Napoleonic wars, this memorable association copy belonging to General George S. Patton Jr., signed and dated by him "G S Patton Jr. Mar 1934" on the front flyleaf."General George S. Patton Jr. has earned a place in the pantheon of authentic American heroes". [Yet] his great success on the battlefield did not come about by chance". He read voraciously". During the interwar years Patton consulted an eclectic list of the famous and the lesser known, ranging from Napoleon and Clausewitz to du Picq, Jomini, Cromwell, Xenophon and Frederick the Great" (D'Este, Patton, 3-4, 317-18). This rare association copy of The Autobiography of Sir Harry Smith""Patton's own copy from that interwar period""is signed and dated by him on the front flyleaf. No other military leader wrote so frequently in his letters or diary what he was reading, and no leader's library was so well-documented since Napoleon's. Patton's library, which was almost entirely inherited by his son, Major General George Patton III, was given to West Point, with just a small portion of books, including this volume, inherited by other descendants or friends."In March 1811 Smith commanded a company in the pursuit of Masséna from the lines of Torres Vedras, and was engaged in the actions of Redinha (12 March), Condeixa (13 March), and Foz d'Aronce (15 March). In the same month he was appointed to the staff as brigade major to the 2nd light brigade of the light division. In this capacity he was engaged in the action of Sabugal on 3 April, in the battle of Fuentes de Oñoro on 5 May, and at the siege and storming of Ciudad Rodrigo on 19 January 1812. After being promoted captain on 28 February 1812, he was also at the siege and storming of Badajos on 6 April". Smith took part in the battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812, the battle of Vitoria on 21 June 1813, the passage of the Bidassoa on 7 October, and the attack on the heights of Vera, and in the battle of Sarre, the attack upon the position of St Jean de Luz, and the attack on the heights of Arcangues in November. He also took part in the battle of Orthez on 27 February 1814, the combat at Tarbes on 20 March, and the battle of Toulouse on 10 April 1814" (ODNB). With frontispiece portrait and folding map of Spain and Portugal. First published in 1901. Some dampstaining and foxing to preliminaries, including the leaf that Patton has signed and the title page, but not affecting Patton's signature. Patton often traveled with what he was reading, even on campaigns, and his books typically show signs of substantial wear. A very good association copy. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Catalogue Général des Livres composant les Bibliothèques du Département de la Marine et des Colonies

Five thick vols, each printed on heavy laid paper. 8vo (230 by 150 mm), uniformly bound ca. 1847 by the atelier of the Imprimerie Royale for the Prince Royal, Louis-Charles-Philippe-Raphaël d'Orléans, Duc de Nemours (1814-1896) in crimson straight-grained morocco (minor & skillful repairs to several joints), sides and smooth spines richly gilt in the style of the "Rocaille Louis-Philippe," the solid tools on covers connected with curved triple fillets, in centers the initials "LO" surrounded by a laurel wreath and surmounted by the royal crown (OHDR fer 2), inside gilt roll borders, light-blue watered-silk liners and endleaves, a.e.g. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1838-39-40-42-43. This magnificently bound five volume catalogue is to a large extent tantamount to a bibliography of French naval and colonial history, describing 17,108 works printed up to 1842, plus approximately 3000 later acquisitions, short-title listed in the index only. It was compiled under the supervision of Louis Marie Bajot (1775-d. "after 1854"), Inspector General of the library of the ministry of the French navy, in collaboration with Angliviel, in charge of the ministry's library of maps and charts. The compilation of the catalogue required remarkable cooperation of numerous librarians in Paris, the ports, and far-flung places such as Pondicherry and Guadeloupe. The catalogue, in fact, lists the contents of no less than eleven libraries belonging to the Ministère de la Marine: its main library and the Dépot général des Cartes et Plans in Paris; the libraries of the naval bases at Cherbourg, Brest, Lorient, Rochefort and Toulon; and the naval hospitals of these ports (except for Lorient). It also gives a list of six colonial naval libraries. In all cases, the names of the librarians in charge and their salaries are given (interestingly, Bajot's was 7,000 frs, while Angliviel's was more than double at 18,000 frs per year). This information is repeated in the preliminary matters of each volume. The catalogue itself preferably describes the copies of the two Paris libraries, otherwise those in one of the other nine libraries; three columns indicate the symbols and shelf numbers of the eleven libraries in three columns headed "Ports," "Hôspitaux," and "Paris." During the Restoration, and especially under Louis-Philippe, the binding atelier of the Imprimerie Royale, under the direction of a certain Courtois, bound the official publications of the Imprimerie in good calf bindings for the ministries, and in richly gilt deluxe morocco for the King and the Crown Prince (the Duc de Nemours, second son of Louis-Philippe, had succeeded his elder brother on his death in 1842 as Prince Royal). These binding for the Duc de Nemours are particularly successful for the handsome treatment to the wide spines. The Duc de Nemours, who was himself an important book collector, was greatly interested in the Navy and especially the colonies, having participated in the conquest of Algeria. His library was dispersed many years after his death, in 1931-32. Preserved in five lined red cloth boxes, morocco labels on backs. ?

Two autograph letters signed. Manchester and Pencarrow, 19 Oct. 1847 and 19 July 1848.

1847. 8vo. Together 5 pp. To W. M. Christy and the photographer Edmund Fry, concerning currency reform and defending Robert Peel's Bank Charter Act of 1844: "I dare not attempt in a letter to enter upon the question of the currency but must reserve it for a topic of conversation when we meet. But with regard to Peels late bill for regulating the Bank, & the paper issues of the country, I do not see that it has been proved to be too stringent in its operations. On the contrary, the late gambling excitement in railways occurred after the passing of that measure-and the present depression arises more from the want of confidence & other causes than a deficiency of circulation and declaring: the nations of the Continent are groaning under the cost of their warlike establishments, which are everywhere unpopular, not only with the tax payers, but with those who have to serve as conscripts in the army".

Rabbis discussed include Judah Halevi, Ibn Ezra, Maimonides, Abarbanel, and Saadia Gaon. A biographical clipping on the author is pasted in, opposite the title page, and a clipping about William Wadden Turner is laid in.       Tipografia Vannucchi, 1847-1851. A work in two volumes, 220x130 mm. I. xiv (including half title), 546, [4] pp. Five lithographic plates (one chromolithographic; rather spotted the plates bound between pp. 164-165 and pp. 210-211); one folding diagram. Illustrations and diagrams in text. II. 614 (including half title), [2] pp. Illustrations and diagrams in text. Uniformly bound in contemporary quarter leather, over marbled boards. Spine into compartments, title and number of volume lettered gilt. In the first volume pale red silk bookmark. Edges blue sprinkled. Leather a bit rubbed at head, corners slightly bumped. A very good copy, light spotting and browning, specially in the second volume. A bit loose some leaves of first volume. The most important work written by the Italian geologist, the second volume published posthumous. ?Though cut short of reaching full maturity, his ability as a consolidator and synthetizer was already evident from his last papers and his Trattato di Geologia. The methodological approach of his work, the vastness of his interests and solidity of his logics on general problems, his skill in regional synthesis, combined with his original comparative approach, force the conclusions that, had he lived, he would have continued his brilliant and steadfast ascent among the distinguished pioneers of geology (B. D?Argenio, Leopoldo Pilla, p. 223)?.
