Minor shelf wear, some chipping to labels. Small ink library stamp and ink ownership inscriptions on titlepages, all but one volume trimmed close, minor marginal staining to a few volumes, light foxing. Good. A comprehensive run of Iowa territorial printings including the extra sessions for July 1840 and June 1844. Iowa was admitted as a state in December 1846. The STATUTE LAWS of 1839 is an important title, as it is the first legal work printed in Iowa. This prints the Northwest Ordinance, the act to establish the territorial government of Iowa, and other resolutions and acts of the Territory. This was the second book printed in Iowa Territory, preceded only by a volume of the Wisconsin legislature, printed in Burlington in 1838, when that legislature was forced to temporarily relocate.         UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. STATE OF TEXAS...I HAVE DRAWN UPON YOU...

New Braunfels, 1846. Printed indenture, 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, executed in ink. Some old folds, light soiling, and "55" written in red pencil in top blank margin. Very good. Printed indenture, executed in ink and signed in full by John O. Meusebach as Trustee of the German Emigration and Rail-Road Company, drawing on the banking firm of H. Flersheim in Frankfurt, for the sum of $3000 to be deposited to the account of the Company, dated Dec. 12. Meusebach, a highly educated and civilized man, came to Texas from Germany in 1845 to succeed Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels as commissioner-general of the Verein zum Shutze Deutscher Einwanderer in Texas, in the course of which he assumed Texas citizenship, oversaw the affairs of the colonists, and accomplished the 1847 treaty with the Comanche chiefs which made colonization possible. This document, coming from the period of his service to the Verein, no doubt represents a draft for funds to further the establishment of the colony, the cities of New Braunfels and Fredericksburg, and the attempted settlement of the financial horror show which Prince Corl left behind. A superb piece, signed by one of the major figures of early Texas colonization.

In two volumes, and four issues. Large 4to (30.7 x 23.5; 32.0 x 25 cm). Volume I (1845-1847): title page, frontispiece (portrait), vi pp., half title to Première partie (sciences, arts et industrie), 342 pp., half title to Deuxième partie (revue coloniale), 128 pp; 5 maps (of which 4 larger, folding), two plates of which one hand-coloured (of 3). Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers, speckled edges; Volume II [12 issues in 10] (1847-1848), half titles to Première partie and Deuxième partie, ii, 392, 116, [ii], viii pp.; engraved portrait (to be used as frontispiece), four large, folded maps, and four plates on three sheets; Volume III [four issues in three] (1848): 148, 32 pp. Both volumes in original printed wrappers.= An expensive (originally sold for 18 Dutch florins per volume!) and now very rare periodical, complete in three volumes, of which we hold the first two and parts 1-3 of the third. The purpose of this important work was to disseminate better knowledge of the Dutch Colonies (mainly on Indonesia) internationally, for which reason it was published in French. Each volume contains many interesting historical, biographical and scientific contributions by such authors as the ichthyologist P. Bleeker, the explorer and geologist Junghuhn, the medical doctor orientalist and Japanologist Von Siebold himself, the zoologist S. Müller, the geographer Melvill de Carnbee, etc. For example: S. Müller, "Notice sur quelques points de la Nouvelle-Guinée"; Bleeker, "Notice sur la topographie physico-médicale de Batavia: Végétation et faune"; Siebold, "Essai historique, statistique et politique sur le commerce du Japon"; and, by le Baron P. Melvill de Carnbee, the fine large, double-folded and tinted "Carte générale des possessions Néerlandaises aux Indes- Orientales, accompagnée de tableaux indiquant la latitude et la longitude des principaux points", which shows that two sultanates on Sumatra were still independent, and a second, large folding chart showing the principal mountains (often volcanoes) of Sumatra, Java, Celebes (Sulawesi), Borneo (Kalimantan), etc. Of special interest is the coloured plate of Javanese fruits, meant to be an advert for an extremely rare elephant folio publication on such by J. Schnell. The third volume has some large papers on fish, by Bleeker. Von Siebold was editor of the first volume only. The first volume is in a nice, contemporary binding; the second is in original printed wrappers, as issued. One plate with a view at Neira (Moluccas) is lacking. A few wrappers with some fraying and chipping, but mostly very good. Some light foxing and toning, but nearly all pages, maps and plates clean. A very good set. Sabin, 49982.

Chief goal of the expedition was the annexation of the Marquises Archipelago and the establishing of French Polynesia. This included detailed observation of the geography, oceanography, anthropology and natural history. The Mollusca section is with 27 plates the largest, and includes three bis-plates; the "zoophytes' has one. There are 13 plates with mammals, 10 with birds, 10 fish, 3 herpetological plates, and 16 "zoophytes". The botany, by J. Decaisne, is not coloured, as always. Plates uncut.         TWO SYSTEMS OF ASTRONOMY: First, the Newtonian System,. Showing the Rise and Progress Thereof, by a Short Historical Account; The General Theory, With a Variety of Remarks Thereof. Second, The System in Accordance with the Holy Scripture, Showing the Rise and Progress from Enoch, the Seventh from Adam; The Prophets, Moses and Others, in the First Testament; Our Lord Jesus Christ, and His Apostles, in the New or Second Testament; Reeve and Muggleton, in the Third and Last Testament; With a Variety of Remarks Thereon.

1st and Only Ed. Thin 4to. xiii + fly title + 96pp. 11 coloured Baxter plates (lightly spotted and a few sl. frayed). New e.ps. sl. adhered to t.p. and last plate along gutter hinge, original gilt lettered blind ruled cloth, some fading and light bubbling, sl. adhesion of paper to upper board, rebacked with original spine laid down.Extremely Scarce. Lewis' 'George Baxter' Prints 374b to 374L; Book 28A. Frost was a prominent Muggletonian (a Protestant sect begun in the seventeenth century). He was instrumental in the refinement of their geocentric astronomical theory, his 'Two Systems ...' outlined the Muggletonian anti-Newtonian cosmology and aimed to discredit it by claiming it was contrary to the Holy Scriptures. This has been argued to be a reaction against the prevalence of popular Newtonian astronomical lecturers in the nineteenth century. One of Baxter's scarcest works, apparently due to a warehouse fire? The Muggletonians, named after Lodowicke Muggleton, were a small Protestant Christian movement which began in 1651 when two London tailors announced they were the last prophets foretold in the biblical Book of Revelation. The group grew out of the Ranters and in opposition to the Quakers. Muggletonian beliefs include a hostility to philosophical reason, a scriptural understanding of how the universe works and a belief that God appeared directly on Earth as Jesus Christ. A consequential belief is that God takes no notice of everyday events on Earth and will not generally intervene until it is meant to bring the world to an end.

        Model of Jerusalem.

Edwin Smith Sheffield 1846 - Plaster-cast relief model (505 x 422 x 70 mm), some small metal details, within fitted wooden box (544 x 465 x 88 mm), some chipping and small loss to plaster and metal details, rather dust-soiled. A very rare survival of a 3D model of the Old City of Jerusalem. The survival rate of these models, in vogue in the mid-nineteenth century, is very low owing to the fact that they are plaster-cast. This type of depiction was used generally for educational purposes to bring the subject alive and provide an accurate depiction of the subject in the time before the widespread use of photography.

The Adventures of Oliver Twist

London - Bradbury and Evans, 1846 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. The new and revised edition of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Actually a nice copy with the plates in particularly clean condition. Some rubbing to the Davies Closter binding but this could be restored. Originally published as a serial inBentley's Miscellany,1837-39 and then as athree volume bookbyBentley in 1838,Dickens made the decision to revise his text. He reworkedhis second novelwhilsthe was in Italy in 1844-5. By this timeDickenshad bought the copyright for the title back from Richard Bentley who published the novel previously. Therefore, the 'New and Revised edition' appeared in 1846. The revised editionwas unparallelled in comparison to Dickens' othernovels andthis edition forms the basis of the present Oliver Twist text. This text is bound fromthe ten monthly parts which were released of this edition. With the author's preface to the third edition. Illustrated, with twenty four platesfrom illustrations by George Cruikshank. Collated, complete. In a Davies Closter half calf binding. Oliver Twist is one ofDickens' most famous works and is notable for its unromantic portrayal of criminals and theirsordid lives. It is also noted for exposing the cruel treatment of many orphansinmid-nineteenth century London. Dicking satirizes the hypocrisies of his time, such as child labour, the recruitment of childrenas criminals as well as the presence of street children. Condition: In a half calf Davies Closter binding. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints, spine and extremities. Some loss to spine due to rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

1846. 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). Oper schon seit Jahren an diesem wunden Fleck.

Three autograph letters signed "Peppina Verdi" to Giuditta [Ricordi] regarding Verdi's Otello

Giuseppina Strepponi, who became Verdi's companion in 1846 and his second wife in 1859, was a gifted soprano in her own right. Donizetti wrote his Adelia (1841) for her, and she created Abigaille in Verdi's Nabucco (1842). She retired from the stage in 1846. She was described as having a "‘limpid, penetrating, smooth voice, seemly action, a lovely figure; and to Nature's liberal endowments she adds an excellent technique'; her ‘deep inner feeling' was also praised." Julian Budden in Grove Music Online. Giuditta Ricordi was the wife of Verdi's music publisher, Giulio Ricordi (1840-1912). "From 1879 until 1887, Giulio Ricordi worked tirelessly to bring about Verdi's composition of Otello, arguably his greatest masterpiece. The annual Christmas cakes presented to the Verdis from 1881 on were designed to keep the 'chocolate project' in the forefront of the composer's mind." Sotheby's catalogue, December 6, 1996. In the nineteenth century the noun "chocolate" was also used to describe men of African descent. For further explanation of the racial and cultural connotations of the word, see Naomi Andre: "From Otello to Porgy: Blackness, Masculinity, and Morality in Opera," in Blackness in Opera, pp. 12-13. Otello was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on February 5, 1887. The Paris première of the opera, which Strepponi mentions, took place on October 12, 1894.. - 3 pp. Octavo. Dated Genoa, December 25, 1882. On stationery with Strepponi's monogram embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). Strepponi discusses family matters, and, most intriguingly, her husband's unfinished opera, Otello. She mentions the third pregnancy of [Filomena?] Maria [Cristina Verdi?] and the ill health of Ricordi's mother. Finally, she thanks Ricordi for a Christmas panettone, upon which a chocolate half-figure of Otello is mounted. "... Last night we received a wonderful panettone with a half-grown Otello!.. Poor thing! He's still in the limbo of the Holy Fathers!.. I thank you for my portion of panettone that I will eat! I believe that Verdi will write about the rest... " Slightly worn and foxed; creased at folds and with several short tears; slightly lacking at blank upper edge of central fold, with no loss to text. - 2 pp. Small quarto (ca. 90 x 116 mm.). Dated Genoa, April 23, 1888. On cardstock with Strepponi's decorative monogram embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). Strepponi writes of the "grumbling" weather, which has not adversely affected her health, and Verdi's wish to leave Genoa. She and her family will soon leave for the "poetic beaches" of St. Agata. She thanks Giuditta for "the cordial reception and continuous kindness we always find in Milan in the Casa Ricordi." "The Milanese sun accompanied us to the mountains, only to make room for clouds in Genoa. Verdi, in spite of the grumbling weather, wanted to leave right away Thursday morning, and the rain blessed Genoa and St. Agata for two days!... We are covering up all furniture and I think we will leave for the poetic beaches of St. Agata as soon as the illustrious Greis comes back to us. The apartment in Genoa is a huge mess; that's why I'm writing to you so little... " Very slightly worn. - 2 pp. Small oblong octavo (ca. 59 x 114 mm.). Dated Paris, October 15, [18]94. On visiting card with "Giuseppina Verdi" printed to recto. In Italian (with translation). Strepponi writes about the first Paris production of Otello, in which tenor Alberto Saleza almost strangled soprano Rose Caron. She hopes Ricordi, who has escaped to the country, will be able to rest. If her husband comes to Milan, she may "embrace" her good friend in person. "... As you know, Otello went really well, but he made one of his bungles: he almost strangled Desdemona with his jealousy and today Madame Caron is in bed. For the second performance she will be replaced by Bosmann!!! Mah!!!" Slightly worn.
