        The Writings.

Boston: Charles Tappan,, 1846. Being his correspondence, addresses, messages, and other papers, official and private, selected and published from the original manuscripts; with a life of the author, notes and illustrations. 12 volumes, octavo (212 x 134 mm). Contemporary speckled full calf, black morocco labels, raised bands with gilt rule, gilt turn-ins, plain cream endpapers. 4 frontispieces with tissue guards, 30 plates engraved by G. W. Boynton. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Slight wear to front covers, rubbing to extremities, even browning to endpapers, slight to heavy oxidisation to plates, light foxing throughout. Half-title, frontispiece, and title page of Volume 1 partially separated from inner hinge. A very good set. Second edition. First published by the American Stationers' Company from 1834-37. Edited by Jared Sparks, the American historian and President of Harvard College, this edition comprises Sparks' biography of Washington, Washington's official and private letters during both the American Revolution and his presidency, as well as his public speeches and addresses to Congress. They propose "to exhibit the writings of Washington in a manner, that will render strict justice to the imperishable name of their author, and contribute the greatest advantage to his countrymen, both at the present time and in future ages" (Introduction, Volume 2). The engraved plates include facsimiles of Washington's handwriting, contemporary maps, battle plans, and medal designs. The engraver, George Washington Boynton, was a Boston based cartographer and map engraver active in the first half of the nineteenth century. Boynton engraved maps for numerous publishers; his most significant work was his contributions to Bradford's National Atlas. This set belonged, in the mid-nineteenth century, to Captain Cuthbert H. Slocomb (1832-1873), a popular Civil War Confederate Officer and leader of The Fifth Company, Washington Artillery. His company were assigned to the Confederate Army of Tennessee and engaged in several major battles throughout the war. Volume 1 is inscribed on the half-title to the then-17 year old Slocomb from his mother, Cora Ann Slocomb, and dated 1 January 1849. Each subsequent volume is inscribed on the title page "C. H. Slocomb" in the same hand. The imprints vary; Vol. I is dated 1837, Vols. II-VI are dated 1834, Vols. VII-IX are dated 1835, Vols. X-XI are dated 1836, and Vol. XII is dated 1837.

Mother Goose of the Old Nursery Rhymes

Synopsis of a grammar of the Karen language, embracing both dialects, Sgau and Pgho, or Sho

[printed and published at the] Karen Mission Press [by C. Bennett. for the American Baptist Mission], Tavoy 1846 - First edition, 4to, pp. viii, 458; old pebble-grain brown cloth neatly rebacked in brown calf, gilt-lettered spine; near fine, and sound. American missionaries first arrived among the Karen tribes in 1828. It was apparently impracticable for them to set up a printing-press in the wild country of the Shan states, but they did so several hundred miles farther south, at Tavoy, in the Tenasserim province. The Karen are were one of the chief tribes of Burma, supposed to be descendants of Chinese tribes driven southwards, ultimately from Mongolian lands. The Karen language is tonal, and belongs to the Siamese-Chinese branch of the Indo-Chinese family. The first book of the press appears to be Jonathan Wade's unfinished Karen dictionary (Tavoy ca. 1842-44). In 1843 Francis Mason published a New Testament printed at the same press, and in 1846 the Rev. Cephas Bennett published there An Anglo-Karen Vocabulary, the same year as this Karen grammar by Mason. Not in Vancil; Aston Catlogue, p. 129. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Funch was master of shipbuilding on Holmen and was in charge of the big shipbuilding at the time, among other things he was in charge of the building of the Corvet Galathea.

[Kōka sannen Amerik-sen narabini Kōmō zokkoku Dennemarku-se ikken ]. On the American Ships and the Ship of Denmark under the Rule of Holland, Which Arrived in 1846....

(circa1846). 12 folded leaves (two detached), some light soiling, creasing at corners, a little insect damaged in a few places causing the loss of a few characters. 24 x 17cm. This manuscript copy of a Japanese letter discusses the arrival at Uraga of the two American ships led by James Biddle and the Danish ship Galathea.James Biddle preceeded Commodore Perry's arrival in Japan by seven years. His mission being to open trade between Japan and the United States. Just as Perry was to do years later, the American ships anchored off Uraga at the entrance to Edo Bay, but due to misunderstandings and the Japanese authorities very decided lack of interest in trading with the United States, his mission was not successful. The Danish ship, Galathea was on a two year voyage around the world (1845 - 1847) engaging in scientific research, working on political goals such as the sale of the Danish colonies in India to the East India Company and searching for new trading opportunities. Her visit to Uraga was also unwelcome and she left for the United States. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 157033)....

Mosque of the Sultan Hassan, from the Great Square of the Rumeyleh

1846 - ROBERTS, David. Original lithograph plate, Mosque of the Sultan Hassan, from the Great Square of the Rumeyleh. [London: F.G. Moon, 1846]. Hand-colored lithograph on onionskin, measuring 12-7/8 by 19 inches, on original mount, measuring 16-3/8 by 23-3/4 inches. $2500.Beautiful original hand-colored lithograph of the Mosque of Sultan Hassan with a large group of colorfully costumed natives in the foreground, from the superb large format first issue of Roberts’ landmark work, Egypt and Nubia (only the first issue is hand-colored on onionskin and mounted on heavier card).Famed lithographer Louis Haghe produced splendid lithographs (including this print) of drawings Roberts made during his 1838-9 journey to Egypt, which were received with widespread enthusiasm when they appeared in 1846-9. "Among all the artists working in Egypt [Roberts] stands head and shoulders above the rest, both for the number of sites and monuments he recorded and for his interesting presentation" (Clayton, 6). "Haghe’s skillful and delicate lithography, and his faithful interpretation of Roberts’ draughtsmanship and dramatic sense, combine in what are undoubtedly remarkable examples of lithographic works.         Autographed Letter, Signed. Afive page hand-written letter, headed - Downing Street "Confidential", 3rd February 1846from Colonial Secretary Gladstone to Viscount Falkland, Governor of Nova Scotia.

London.1846. - folio. 32x 20cm, 5p. ribbon tied, in fine condition in clamshell case. (cgc) ".Her Majesty's Government are desirous that the Militia of the whole of Her Majesty's NorthAmerican Provinces be placed on a footing to enable it to render efficient services, ifrequired. It cannot be long before I receive an account of the measures which theLegislature of Nova Scotia shall have adopted with respect to its own Militia; and yourLordship had better apprise Lord Cathcart of the amount of the Force which you can expectto be able to raise. .The general principle applicable to this matter is, that duringPeace each Colony bears the charge of its local force. I am led to suppose that so faras regards Nova Scotia, the clothing would be supplied by the parties forming the MilitiaForce. But arms and accouterments will be sent from this Country, and the cost of themwill not be charged to the Province only. As regards the expense of training, I trust, ofcourse, that you will arrange that they shall be defrayed either locally in the Districts,or from the Provincial Treasury. [signed] W Gladstone". An interesting insight intothe British government's policy on militia and defence of British North America after theRebellions of 1837 and the move towards self-government in the Colonies. Future BritishPrime Minister Gladstone was Colonial Secretary for a short period in 1846 under the Peelgovernment. Viscount Falkland was Governor of Nova Scotia from 1840 to 1846. Resisting thedemand for responsible government and at loggerheads with Joseph Howe, Falkland left NovaScotia under a cloud in 1846. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

An Anglo-Karen vocabulary. Monosyllables...for the use of Karen schools

Tavoy: Karen Mission Press, 1846. First edition, 12mo, pp. iv, [1], 14-188; contemporary if not original red roan-backed marbled boards; joints and spine rubbed, old Newton Theological Institure label at base of spine, Newton bookplate; all else very good. American missionaries first arrived among the Karen tribes in 1828. It was apparently impracticable for them to set up a printing-press in the wild country of the Shan states, but they did so several hundred miles farther south, at Tavoy, in the Tenasserim province. The first book of the press appears to be Jonathan Wade's Karen dictionary (Tavoy ca. 1842-44 - "No title. The work was left unfinished, only 324pp. published - (Quaritch)."). In 1846 the Rev. Cephas Bennett published there An Anglo-Karen Vocabulary. But he was not the first pioneer to set the Karen language down on paper, for we are told that Karen was "never written till Dr. Wade... reduced it to writing using the Burmese consonants. The Karens thus have no written literature" (The Spread of Printing, Eastern Hemisphere, p. 87). According to Francis Mason, who in 1843 published a New Testament printed at the same press by Cephas Bennett, the Wade Karen Dictionary was already printing, and as we can find nor earlier mention of a book printed at the Karen (later Tavoy) Mission Press, we take this to be its first production. But it was unfinished; thus, Bennett's dictionary two years later appears to be the first complete Karen dictionary published, albeit only monosyllabes. The Karen are were one of the chief tribes of Burma, supposed to be descendants of Chinese tribes driven southwards, ultimately from Mongolian lands. The Karen language is tonal, and belongs to the Siamese-Chinese branch of the Indo-Chinese family. Not in Vancil or Zaunmuller.

Carolina Sports by Land and Water. Including Incidents of Devil-Fishing, &c

Charleston, [South Carolina]: Burges & James, 1846. First edition. 172 pp. 1 vols. 12mo (175 x 103 mm). Later blue cloth preserving yellow wrappers. Lenox Library duplicate stamp and release on verso of title page; textblock faintly toned, a few stray ink marks in margins. Bookplate. Near fine. First edition. 172 pp. 1 vols. 12mo (175 x 103 mm). Antebellum Sporting Rarity. William Elliott (1788-3 Feb. 1863) was a third-generation South Carolina planter, writer, and sportsman. He served in the state senate for nearly two decades, and was respected as one of the most gifted planters of the old South producing large crops of rice and sea island cotton. He wrote frequently on agricultural and outdoor topics in newspapers and in the American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine. The sporting sketches were collected and published as Carolina Sports by Land and Water, Including Incidents of Devil Fishing, Etc. (1846). "The charm of these tales lies in the animation and gusto with which Elliott communicates his experiences. ... Theodore Roosevelt, who became fascinated with harpooning the devilfish in later years, paid tribute to Elliott's book: "Killing devil-fish with the harpoon and lance had always appealed to me as a fascinating sport, since as a boy I had read Elliott's account of it in his 'Field Sports of South Carolina'"(ANB).A landmark of American sporting literature and an uncommon antebellum Charleston imprint.         Der deutsche Tribun. Erstes Heft. Nachzudrucken!

Ohne Ort, Verlag und Jahr, (wohl Herisau, Literarisches Institut Mich. Schläpfer, 1846). 11,5 x 6,5 cm. 95 Seiten. Broschierter Umschlag der Zeit. *Stammhammer I, S. 103. Madison US), selbst die Bay.

Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.

London: Aylott and Jones, , 1846. Octavo (166 × 104 mm). Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in early 20th-century green straight-grain morocco, title and decorations to spine gilt with gilt raised bands, gilt rules to covers, marbled endpapers, turn-ins and top edge gilt. With the original green cloth bound in at rear (Parrish binding II). Spine faded, a little rubbing to spine ends and tips, internally fresh. An exceptional copy. First edition, first issue of the Brontë sisters' first publication. Extremely scarce, the first issue is extant in tiny numbers: it was published in an edition of 1,000 copies, but just 39 copies sold. Following the success of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, the unsold stock of 961 copies was purchased by Smith in September 1848. Hoping to capitalise on the novel's success, they re-issued this collection of verse the following month with a cancel title-page, retaining the original date. Published pseudonymously to forestall possible prejudice against female writers, the slim volume contains 19 poems by Charlotte ("Currer"), and 21 each by Emily ("Ellis") and Anne ("Acton"). Though a commercial failure, its literary merits did not go entirely unrecognized. A reviewer in the Athenaeum wrote that Ellis had "a fine quaint spirit... which may have things to speak which men will be glad to hear" (4 July, 1846).
