The Holy Land & Syria, from Drawings made on the Spot., 1846-9.. Pl 34. Tinted lithograph (two tints). Original hand colouring. Very good condition. Subscribers Edition Image size. Size: 35.5 x 25 cm. (14 x 10 inches) Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas.

Verlag von Jakob Dirnböck, Wien [Vienna] 1846 - iv & 416 pages; Contemporary (publisher's?) boards covered with thin brown glazed cloth, spine with a mounted label in pale orange paper. Edges and corners are worn, internal hinges a bit shaken, with four leaves with minor tears from the fore-edges, and the first leaf of the contents at the rear exhibiting a tear which begins at the lower gutter margin and then extends nearly across the page -- none of these tears involves loss of paper. Some scattered foxing and a few corners gently folded down. Attributing this rare Austrian cookbook to its author presents a double puzzle. The title page, indeed, the title itself, gives credit to "Marianka" -- who is identified as "Mundköchin" to Hans-Jörgel von Gumpoldskirchen. But the purported master of the house was really a comic front, the namesake of a weekly publication of satire and humor published in Vienna for decades: „Komische Briefe des Hans-Jörgel von Gumpoldskirchen an seinen Schwager Maxel in Feselau." The founder and first editor was Josef Alois Gleich, who ran "Hans-Jörgel" -- as his creation was called, from 1832-37. His weekly outlived Gleich (who died in 1841) under the successive editorships of Johann Baptist Weis , Anton Langer, Karl Costa, and Karl Gründorf, who took the paper through 1895. The charming name "Marianka" was memorialized in popular songs going back to the 1840's. Was "our" Marianka real? Was she Josef Alois Gleich's cook? The answers are beyond our ability to determine, and we will take our cue from the Austrian National Library who owns one of the rare surviving copies, and does not specify an author's name in its catalogue entry. Whoever wrote this book, it is a real cookbook, not a spoof. The long text is divided into three sections: Section one deals with preparation for cooking (from animal, vegetable and mineral foodstuffs). The second part -- Cooking and spicing of food which deals with meat soups, fast soups, beef dishes, side dishes, vegetables , preserves, Greater pastries and quiver, roasts, salads, cakes and fine baked goods, and beverages. The final section deals with preparing the table, preserving food, sources for and judging provisions, etc. A complete copy, despite minor tears to five leaves. The rarity of this first edition is highlighted by the publication of a second edition the following year, 1847. In that same year, a second volume was published, under a slightly altered title: "Der Marianka, Hauswirthin des Hans-Jörgel von Gumpoldskirchen ." As the title implies, the later volume is more devoted to housekeeping and household management, rather than pure cookery, on which our volume focuses. OCLC locates two copies of this 1846 first edition -- [Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin -- OCLC number: 249237905] and [British Library OCLC Number: 562234654]. Both these were catalogued as "8vo" -- but the volume is actually a 12mo with alternating gatherings signed in eights and fours. There is another copy of this 1846 rarity at Österreichische Nationalbibliothek - Austrian National Library. We have found no records beyond these three. A scarce cookbook, specifically written for the Viennese at an early point in the city's mid nineteenth century flowering. The railways were starting to affect the transportation of people and materials, including food, in lower Austria; the Austrian Academy of Sciences was established the following year (1847). The last expression of Austria's revolutions of 1848 -- the October Vienna Uprising was still two years in the future. In another thirty years, the Hotel Sacher and the Café Central would open for business, again changing the way the Viennese viewed and consumed food and drink.         Cricket on the Hearth

1846. First Edition . DICKENS, Charles. The Cricket on the Hearth. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846. Small octavo, mid-20th century full crushed brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $1800.First edition of DickensÂ’ third Christmas Book, illustrated with frontispiece, vignette title page, and 12 illustrations by Leech, Doyle, Landseer and Stanfield—six of the plates engraved by Edward Dalziel, with three autograph notes signed by him laid in—in handsome morocco-gilt with original cloth bound in by Worsfold.Beginning in 1843 with A Christmas Carol, Dickens published five Christmas-themed books for the holiday season, creating a new literary genre in the process. The Cricket on the Hearth was the third in the series, and ""it is said to rank second in importance as a Christmas Book"" after the Carol (Eckel, 119). It is ""perhaps most affecting still for its portrait of a blind girl whose father has over the years created for her a wonderfully bright and luxurious world in which she believes she lives; no one was better at such effects than Dickens"" (Ackroyd, 483). Without advertisement leaves. Smith II:6. Gimbel A92. Eckel, 119-20. Six of the plates in this book were engraved by the Dalziel Brothers. Edward ""was in business at first, but spent much of his spare time studying art, finally joining his brother George in London in 1839 as a wood engraver"" (Houfe, 111). From 1855-75, ""wood-engraving reached its zenith in the work of the Dalziel brothersÂ… As patrons of illustrators and producers of books illustrated by teams of artists, the Dalziels attained a position of great importance"" (Harthan, 205). These undated autograph notes from Edward Dalziel concern the selection of subjects for illustration and delays in production, one due to his own illness and another due to an artist's time requirements.Inoffensive light soiling, old folds, small tape repairs to autograph notes; small marginal chip to one note, not affecting text. Book lovely. Very nearly fine condition.

Folio (413 x 280mm). With three plain and 420 stipple-engraved plates printed in colours and finished by hand. Contemporary half purple calf, gilt spines with monogram. A fine copy of the most attractive fruit book ever produced. This work represents the apogee of French stipple-engraved colour printing, achieved by Redouté and his pupils. The plates first appeared accompanying Antoine Poiteau and Pierre Jean François Turpin's edition of Duhamel du Monceau's 'Traité des Arbres fruitiers', published in 72 parts, 1807-1835. After Turpin's death in 1840 Poiteau, who was the sole author of the text, took control of the plates and removed Turpin's name from them. He also arranged text and plates according to the group of fruit, whereas the 1807-1835 edition was without systematic arrangement./"Von A. Poiteau wurde die neue Auflage dieses pomologischen Werkes bearbeitet mit dem Titel 'Pomologie Française', Paris 1836-1846, der eine sehr beachtenswerte Einleitung vorangeht" (S. Martini, Geschichte der Pomologie in Europa p. 92). "This work is a re-issue, with greatly modified text, of the 1807-35 edition of Duhamel du Monceau's 'Traité des arbres fruitiers'" (RHS Lindley Library)./The first volume is devoted to almonds, peaches, apricots, and plums; the second to citrus fruit, grapes, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, etc; the third to gooseberries, currants and pears (over 100 varieties); and the fourth to apples, hazelnuts, walnuts, figs, and even an avocado. Poiteau and Turpin were both outstanding botanical artists in the 'Redouté' style, and utilised the techniques of colour-printing Redouté had devised. The 'Pomologie française' was published by Langlois, the great master of colour printing who supervised much of Redouté's best work. A team of over twenty engravers worked on the plates.//Nissen BBI, 551; Great Flower Books p. 55; Stafleu & Cowan 1548; Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona n. 31.

The Adventures of Oliver Twist; Or, The Parish Boy's Progress.

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846. FIRST EDITION in one volume, also the first octavo edition. Octavo, pp.. With 24 steel engravings by Cruikshank (re-touched for this edition by Findlay). Bound c.1900 by Zaehnsdorf in mid-blue full morocco, gilt, with marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, original cloth bound in at rear. Bookplate to pastedown, internally clean but for some mild toning to plates, binding fine with some gentle sunning to spine. A lovely fine copy of this important edition. Dickens' classic second novel, published one year after 'The Pickwick Papers', which publicised various hypocrisies and contemporary social evils, including the workhouse, child labour and the recruitment of children as criminals. Filled to the brim with the archetypal circus of Dickensian excesses; vicious thieves, ladies of negotiable virtue with hearts of gold, plucky urchins, cringeworthy Jewish gentlemen and undoubtedly a jolly fat person somewhere. Beautifully written, and beneath the pantomime, probably not such an inaccurate depiction of social realities in the age of empire. Gimbel Collection [A38], Grolier Club Catalogue [72].

12 pages of verse and 12 full-page superbly detailed lithographed plates by A. Giere; together with a multiple image title-label which, presumably was intended for the front cover when the book was bound up. First Norwegian Edition, based on a German work published in 1840 called, "Der Jahrmarkt. Spine splitting; contents loose; else a very good copy contained in a modern half morocco folding case. An extremely scarce work seemingly unknown to Toole Stott, as he fails to mention either the Norwegian or the German edition. The plates include scenes of a tented panorama and a peepshow; a juggler; and a magician. The first Norwegian primer for children was not published until 1798, and the first children's book considered a classic was Moe's In the Well and in the Pond published in 1851. Markedsscener, published in 1846, is considered to be the first picture book for children published in Norway.

Brussels: M. Haney, 1846 First edition. Original printed wrappers. Affixed to the bottom portion of the front wrappers is a printed slip for the Paris publisher, Jules Renouard, who apparently acquired part of the edition. . Large octavo. Wrappers partially browned, spine split in several places, but a very good copy, in its original state, in a full morocco clamshell slipcase. Quetelet (1796-1874) was a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician and sociologist. He founded and directed the Brussels Observatory. He became interested in the Ë™young science of probability and statistics as an astronomer to explain measurement errors, but became one of the first to see its applications to the social sciences. He understood the complexities of social phenomena and became interested in using what he called "social physics" as a tool to explain crime rates, marital rates, suicide rates, etc. In 1835, he published Sur l'homme et le développement des ses faculties, essai d'une physique sociale, which made him famous throughout Europe. These letters to the Grand Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha are an important sequel to that work. Cajori calls them "Quetelet's best researches on the application of probability to the physical and social sciences" and notes: "He laid emphasis on the 'law of large numbers,' which was advanced also by the Frenchman S.D. Poisson and discussed by the German W. Lexis (1877), the Scandinavians H. Westergaard and Carl Charlier, and the Russian Pafnuti Liwowich Chebichev (1821-1894) of the University of Petrograd." Quetelet's work was enormously influential to Francis Galton, who expanded upon it in Hereditary Genius.

These publications represent the cumulative work of Le Verrier's prediction of the existence of the then unknown planet Neptune, using only mathematics and astronomical observations of the planet Uranus. Realizing that the irregularity of the orbit of Uranus was due to the influence of an undiscovered planet further out, Le Verrier succeeded in computing the mass and orbit of the perturbing body. He sent his prediction of the missing planet's position to Johann Galle (1812 - 1910) of the Berlin Observatory, who actually found Neptune on his first night of looking, 23 September 1846, based upon Le Verrier's predicted location. Le Verrier (1811 - 1877) was encouraged by the physicist Arago, then Director of the Paris Observatory. Unknown to Le Verrier, an English scientist, John Couch Adams, had arrived at the same conclusions, though the results of Adams' work were written in a private letter and dated two days later than Le Verrier's public lecture to the French Academy on 31 August, 1846. Although controversy arose over the credit for the discovery, as Adams began his work before Le Verrier and indeed made the same prediction nearly a year earlier, Adams failed to publish until more than a month following Galle's sighting. The dispute was apparently made even more difficult by Le Verrier's arrogance and violent temper. Le Verrier went on to work on a re - evaluation of planetary motion and perturbations, and published a table of the motions of all known planets. He also theorized that the slow precession of Mercury's orbit around the sun could not be completely explained by Newtonian mechanics, and suggested another planet in between Mercury and the sun (Vulcan). He was director of the Paris Observatory from 1854 to 1870, when he was driven out by the staff because of his management style; he was re - appointed in 1873 after the new director, Delaunay, drowned.

        Flussaue bei Pähl

      - Technik: Bleistift und Weißhöhung auf Papier. Beschriftung: unten links signiert: "C.

Paris, Librairie de Amyot (printed by Éd. Proux et Cie), 1846. 8vo. With a large folding map (40 x 52.5 cm) depicting what the United States called Oregon Country, dated 1846 and partly coloured in outline. Modern maroon half morocco.

Eberstadt 134:563; Howes F70; Sabin 24000; not in the Graff Collection. First and only separately published edition of a detailed account of the geography, history and especially diplomacy of the northwest American region that the United States called Oregon Country, written and published during the negotiations to divide the region between Great Britain and the United States. The British called it the Columbia District. The folding map shows the "ligne proposé par les Etats-Unis" at the 49th parallel, which was the final dividing line in the 1846 treaty except that the whole of Vancouver Island went to Great Britain. In 1848 the United States part officially became the Oregon territory and was later the States of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and parts of two others, while the British part became the southern part of what is now British Columbia in Canada. The map has some irregular folds and several tears, some repaired, but all are marginal. The book is otherwise in very good condition.

Cassel, Theodor Fischer/ Stuttgart, Schweizerbart, (1846-) 1851-1894. Volumes 1-40. With 1743, mostly lithographed plates of which some tinted, 2 maps. Contemporary half calf, spines with green gilt lettered label, marbled sides. A very rare, almost complete, early run of this most important paleontological periodical. This beautifully produced periodical containing numerous monographs on fossil shells was edited by the leading 19th century German paleontologists Herm. von Meyer, Wilh. Dunker and K.A. Zittel. All famous German paleontologists of the second half of the 19th century contributed, by publishing larger or smaller monographs in the Palaeontographica. "Ein Hauptverdienst Dunkers war es, mit H. v. Meyer zusammen in 1846 die Palaeontographica begründet zu haben, das die deskriptiven Grundlagen der Paläontologie schuf. Dunker gab mit Meyer 18 dieser Bände heraus, anschliessend noch 6 Bände mit K.A. von Zittel. Besonderer Wert erhalten die zahlreichen paläontologischen Veröffentlichungen durch seine selbstgefertigten, vorzüglichen lithographischen Tafeln" (NDB IV, 199)./Added to the present set are some volumes of the 'Palaeontographica Supplementbände' (supplement volumes) /Supplement volumes to Palaeontographica were published on individual topics.         Collection of Photographs of Bay Area Street Cars 1909-1941

Very Good. 220 mounted black and white photographs documenting many of the street car lines of the Bay Area. Majority of photos are 5 x 8 inches with a couple smaller. Many of the photos have location written in pencil on back in addition to the stamp of Tom Gray of Burlingame, CA. This may be Thomas Gray (March 22, 1846, Toronto, Canada - January 16, 1935, Burlingame, California) who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco, California from 1876 to 1916. According to Southern Pacific, Gray, and Gray's children, he invented the widely-used "Stop, Look & Listen" crossing sign in 1884. The later dated photos do not have his stamp on back. Most of the photos are dated from 1909 to 1941 with a couple outliers as late as 1970. In addition to well composed photos, each photo has a label caption adjacent citing location and date, which is usually duplicated on back. A number of header sheets indicate line numbers and give a brief history of that particular line. Among other lines are the Ninth (Polk & Larkin Streets) , Ellis and O'Farrell, San Bruno Avenue Route, Guerrero Street San Jose Avenue Cemetaries, and Fillmore and Valencia. Because each photo has a specific location identified, this collection will also be valuable for the background visible in each shot. All photos are mounted on two-punch photo sheets measuring 11 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches, only on one side and are all loose. Overall, in very good condition with small chips or tears to several sheets, while photos are in fine condition. All pages numbered in pencil, completing what seem to be three albums containing 220 photos with three missing. A wonderful record of Bay area Street cars for the historian or rail buff. Scans upon request. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .
