L'Orégon et les côtes de l'Océan Pacifique du Nord, aperçu géographique, statistique et politique, avec une carte du pays d'après les documens les plus récens.Paris, Librairie de Amyot (printed by Éd. Proux et Cie), 1846. 8vo. With a large folding map (40 x 52.5 cm) depicting what the United States called Oregon Country, dated 1846 and partly coloured in outline. Modern maroon half morocco.

Eberstadt 134:563; Howes F70; Sabin 24000; not in the Graff Collection. First and only separately published edition of a detailed account of the geography, history and especially diplomacy of the northwest American region that the United States called Oregon Country, written and published during the negotiations to divide the region between Great Britain and the United States. The British called it the Columbia District. The folding map shows the "ligne proposé par les Etats-Unis" at the 49th parallel, which was the final dividing line in the 1846 treaty except that the whole of Vancouver Island went to Great Britain. In 1848 the United States part officially became the Oregon territory and was later the States of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and parts of two others, while the British part became the southern part of what is now British Columbia in Canada. The map has some irregular folds and several tears, some repaired, but all are marginal. The book is otherwise in very good condition.

Beiträge zur Naturgeschichte der Vorwelt. Herausgegeben von Wilh. Dunker und Herm. von Meyer (& K.A. Zittel).

Cassel, Theodor Fischer/ Stuttgart, Schweizerbart, (1846-) 1851-1894. Volumes 1-40. With 1743, mostly lithographed plates of which some tinted, 2 maps. Contemporary half calf, spines with green gilt lettered label, marbled sides. A very rare, almost complete, early run of this most important paleontological periodical. This beautifully produced periodical containing numerous monographs on fossil shells was edited by the leading 19th century German paleontologists Herm. von Meyer, Wilh. Dunker and K.A. Zittel. All famous German paleontologists of the second half of the 19th century contributed, by publishing larger or smaller monographs in the Palaeontographica. "Ein Hauptverdienst Dunkers war es, mit H. v. Meyer zusammen in 1846 die Palaeontographica begründet zu haben, das die deskriptiven Grundlagen der Paläontologie schuf. Dunker gab mit Meyer 18 dieser Bände heraus, anschliessend noch 6 Bände mit K.A. von Zittel. Besonderer Wert erhalten die zahlreichen paläontologischen Veröffentlichungen durch seine selbstgefertigten, vorzüglichen lithographischen Tafeln" (NDB IV, 199)./Added to the present set are some volumes of the 'Palaeontographica Supplementbände' (supplement volumes) /Supplement volumes to Palaeontographica were published on individual topics.         Collection of Photographs of Bay Area Street Cars 1909-1941

Very Good. 220 mounted black and white photographs documenting many of the street car lines of the Bay Area. Majority of photos are 5 x 8 inches with a couple smaller. Many of the photos have location written in pencil on back in addition to the stamp of Tom Gray of Burlingame, CA. This may be Thomas Gray (March 22, 1846, Toronto, Canada - January 16, 1935, Burlingame, California) who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco, California from 1876 to 1916. According to Southern Pacific, Gray, and Gray's children, he invented the widely-used "Stop, Look & Listen" crossing sign in 1884. The later dated photos do not have his stamp on back. Most of the photos are dated from 1909 to 1941 with a couple outliers as late as 1970. In addition to well composed photos, each photo has a label caption adjacent citing location and date, which is usually duplicated on back. A number of header sheets indicate line numbers and give a brief history of that particular line. Among other lines are the Ninth (Polk & Larkin Streets) , Ellis and O'Farrell, San Bruno Avenue Route, Guerrero Street San Jose Avenue Cemetaries, and Fillmore and Valencia. Because each photo has a specific location identified, this collection will also be valuable for the background visible in each shot. All photos are mounted on two-punch photo sheets measuring 11 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches, only on one side and are all loose. Overall, in very good condition with small chips or tears to several sheets, while photos are in fine condition. All pages numbered in pencil, completing what seem to be three albums containing 220 photos with three missing. A wonderful record of Bay area Street cars for the historian or rail buff. Scans upon request. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .

'There was an old person of Dover.'

An original pen & ink drawing by Edward Lear, taken from 'A Book of Nonsense,' first published in 1846. This drawing has been examined and fully authenticated as Lear's work by the late Vivien Noakes, the world expert on Edward Lear. The drawing accompanies the limerick, 'There was an old person of Dover.' It is drawn on silk, or possibly fine rag paper, and then laid on paper for support. It was drawn, almost certainly for presentation to friends, and would originally have been part of a group of drawings bound in book form, probably at the time of its making in the early 1860's. There is some staining and browning, but otherwise the drawing is in excellent condition. The drawing is mounted on acid free card and is supplied with a copy of the letter of authentication from Vivien Noakes. Mount sixe: 24.7 x 30.5 cm.Original 'Nonsense' drawings by Lear are exceedingly rare. This item is subject to VAT at the rate of 20%.

        Mexico & Guatemala:

      S. Augustus Mitchell. Philadelphia. Copyright 1846. - Handcolored map, lithograph, 12 x 15 inches including decorative border on sheet 13 3/4 x 17 1/4 inches. Toning and light soiling to margins, archivally repaired tear entering the decorative border at centre of upper edge, pinholes in three corners, occasional light soiling in image. Good condition. A fascinating map of the "American West" before it was: the map, published at the start of the Mexican-American War, shows Mexico extending south of the Oregon Territory and east to the Rocky Mountains and Rio Grande, including the huge Mexican state "Upper or New California." It is from the 1846 edition of Mitchell's New Universal Atlas (with a plate number of 36 outside the neat line). The copyright line at lower centre reads: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1846 by H.N. Burroughs, in the Clerk's Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania." There is an inset map "Valley of Mexico" at lower left and of Guatemala at upper right. A fascinating snapshot of the Western United States just prior to the California Gold Rush and the annexation of California.

        Recherches sur le mouvements d'Uranus

Paris: Bachelier, 1846. 1st Edition. Softcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. In: Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de l'Académie des Sciences, Vol. XXII, no. 22, June 1846, pp. 907-918. Paris: Bachelier, 1846. 4to (283 x 226 mm). Entire volume 22 (Jan. - June 1846), [4], 1208 pp., including half- and general title-page. Contemporary plain paper wrapper with printed paper label to spine, pages untrimmed and unopened. Very little marginal browning and occasional minor spotting to text, faint dampstaining to blank margin of few leaves. A fine, unsophisticated copy.----Sparrow, Milestones of Science 132. - In 1845 the astronomer and physicist Francois Arago encouraged Le Verrier to examine observed anomalies in the movements of the known planet Uranus. Le Verrier began by establishing a precise theory of Uranus which he demonstrated in his memoir "Recherches sur les Mouvements d'Uranus" published in Volume 22, number 22. He showed that the discrepancies in the orbit of Uranus could not be explained by the gravitational effects of the Sun, Jupiter or Saturn, but were in fact caused by the presence of an as yet unknown planet within its orbit. "In 1846, John Couch Adams, an English astronomer, and Urban J. J. Leverrier, a French astronomer, simultaneously and independently determined the location of a possible new planet. Adams put Newton's theory of attraction to a test by studying the causes of the irregularities in the motion of the planet Uranus. In 1845, he wrote of his findings of the mathematical location of the new planet to Sir George Biddell Airy, Astronomer Royal. Because Adams was unknown, his letter was put aside. Meanwhile these same perturbations of Uranus had become of interest to Leverrier. On July 1, 1846, he presented a paper Recherches sur les movement d'Uranus (1846) to the Académie des Sciences in Paris... When Airy realized that Leverrier and Adams had reached the same conclusions, he hastened to suggest that a search be made for the new planet. Shortly thereafter it was seen but not recognized. About a week before it was found in England, it was discovered by Galle in Berlin on information supplied by Leverrier. Thus, the honor of priority of discovery, or even co-discovery of the new Planet, Neptune, was lost to Adams and credited to Leverrier. Adam's paper On the perturbations of Uranus was read before the Royal Astronomical Society, November 13, 1846, and was published in 1847" (Sparrow, p.40). Near fine.

12 pages of verse and 12 full-page superbly detailed lithographed plates by A. Giere; together with a multiple image title-label which, presumably was intended for the front cover when the book was bound up. First Norwegian Edition, based on a slightly earlier German work. Spine splitting; contents loose; else a very good copy contained in a modern half morocco folding case. An extremely scarce work seemingly unknown to Toole Stott, as he fails to mention either the Norwegian or the German edition. The first Norwegian primer for children was not published until 1798, and the first children's book considered a classic was Moe's In the Well and in the Pond published in 1851. Markedscener, published in 1846, is considered to be the first picture book for children published in Norway.

A History of British Fossil Mammals, and Birds. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo.

John van Voorst. 1846 Half title, folding table, woodcut illus., 4pp cata. (Dec. 1845) in smaller format. A bright clean copy. Uncut in orig. olive-green pebble-grained cloth; spine sl. faded with faint mark to lower edge. A near fine copy.Richard Owen, 1804-1892, was a renowned but controversial English Paleontologist who was compared favourably with the naturalists Georges Cuvier and Friedrich von Humboldt. In his role as Superintendent of the British Museum's Departments of Natural History, Owen was influential in campaigning for the establishment of a dedicated natural history museum, which was eventually opened in South Kensington in 1881. Fiercely ambitious and vicious in temperament, he was alienated from the scientific world, especially after his outspoken criticism of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This volume was part of a uniform series of works on zoology published by Van Voorst in a large and attractive 8vo format.

Document. "Address to the People of California."

Following his momentous raising of the American flag over Monterey on 7 July 1846, Commodore Sloat did little actually to secure still-divided, still-fractious California for the U.S. On 23 July Commodore Stockton, the grandson of Signer of the Declaration of Independence Richard Stockton, took over command from Sloat of the U.S. Pacific Squadron and embraced the task. The => inaugural document in hand sets the tone in both substance and style for the efforts by which Stockton, and his combined land and sea forces, were by various stratagems and successes on the battlefield to fulfill their mission in the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga on 13 January 1847. In this "Address" and in contrast to Sloat's slow, diplomatic, and we might now say "inclusive" approach, Stockton's words and tone are not conciliatory in any way: "The Mexican Government and their Military Officers have without cause for a year past been threatening the United States with hostilities. . . . General Castro the Commander in Chief of the Military forces of California has violated every principle of international law and national hospitality by hunting and pursuing with several hundred Soldiers, and with wicked intent, Captain Fremont of the U.S. Army who came here to refresh his men (about forty in number) after a perilous journey across the Mountains on a scientific survey." He further accuses Castro and his men of murder, rapine, desertion, "repeated outrages and hostilities." Stockton therefore announces that he "cannot . . . confine my operations to the quiet and undisturbed possession of the defenseless ports of Monterey and San Francisco, whilst the people elsewhere are suffering from lawless violence, but will immediately march against these boasting and abusive Chiefs who have not only violated every principle of national hospitality and good faith towards Captain Fremont and his surveying party, but who unless driven out, will with the aid of hostile Indians keep this beautiful Country in a constant state of revolution and blood."He concludes by saying, "The Commander in Chief does not desire to possess himself of one foot of California for any other reason then [sic] as the only means to save from distruction[sic], the lives and property of the foreign residents, and Citizens of the territory, who have invoked his protection." => Less than a month later, martial law was formally declared. There is no census of copies of this important Anglo-Californian foundation document. Using the Online Archive of California, NUCMC, and the OPACs of the Bancroft and Hungtington libraries and the California Historical Society, we locate => only the copy contained among the Templeton Crocker manuscripts at the CHS, this in a retained copy of a letter from Stockton to Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft. However, we do know of a a copy, signed by Stockton, in a private collection.Provenance: The Pacific School of Religion (properly released). As a side- or footnote not always recalled, Stockton's success in California must have been savorable not only as professional and patriotic triumph, but as redemption as well; his career had somehow *not* been wrecked by an incident in which a faulty cannon of his design had a few years before killed the Secretary of the Navy and a number of other dignitaries during its demonstration!

Omukaibune ningyo zue [trans.: Illustrations of Dolls for the Tenjin Festival]

First two openings with double-page colored woodcut borders, three double-page woodcuts, & 28 full-page woodcuts. 33 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers (spine perished). Osaka: Naraya Matsubei, 1846. First edition. The Tenjin Festival, dating back to 951, is one of the three largest festivals in Japan (the others are the Sanno Festival in Tokyo and the Gion Festival in Kyoto). It takes place in late July and is dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, who was deified as a god of learning. It was the custom in the 17th century for residents of each district of the city to make beautiful dolls based on the main characters of classical Japanese theater, each of which was about 2.4 meters tall. These dolls would be placed in front of the residents' houses to welcome the spirits of the gods. In the 19th century, about 50 dolls existed, but today only about 15 of the old dolls survive, many of which are annually displayed in the Tenmangu Shrine during the festival. This book is the best record of these dolls, many of which no longer exist. 43 dolls are depicted here in the fine woodcuts, of which 28 are portrayed in full-page woodcuts with accompanying text giving information on the district and artist where each doll was made, the symbolism and meaning of each doll, extremely detailed explanations of the clothes and ornaments which the dolls are wearing, etc. Matsukawa (1818-82), was a prolific book illustrator of the period. There is some worming touching text and image, carefully repaired, but a very good copy.

Wien, -, 1846 - 1849 - 1857. 3 Hefte. 8°. 47, 23, 115 S. OBrosch. in Biedermeierkassette. Versand D: 7,00 EUR Kunst

Rivière Derwent Près De Richemont (Ile Van-Diemen)...

Paris: circa, 1846. Hand-coloured lithograph, 190 x 300 mm. Original lithograph from Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage au Pole Sud", showing the Derwent River with, in the foreground, a coach-and-four going at full speed. At this time coaches were running between Hobart and New Norfolk; Craig notes that this is one of the first images of coaches.Dumont d'Urville left Toulon on September 7, 1837, with two ships, the "Astrolabe" and the "Zelee", on a voyage whose instructions included exploration of the Antarctic. The voyage would be dogged by mishap and illness. The official artist Ernest Auguste Goupil died during the expedition's visit to Hobart in April 1840. Le Breton (1818-1866), the artist of this image, had sailed as assistant surgeon but now was called upon to replace Goupil as official artist since his ability in that field had come to Dumont d'Urville's attention. Le Breton resigned from his medical functions in 1848 and transferred to the Department of Maps and Charts in Paris, where he remained until his death on 30 August 1866.

Supplement to the New South Wales Government Gazette of Tuesday, December 29, 1846...

Sydney: W. W. Davies, 1846. Folio, 5 pp. (numbered [1639]-1643) ; disbound. An important "Supplement" to the Government Gazette, printing the latest news of the explorations of Sir Thomas Mitchell and Samuel Augustus Perry. These supplements were not always kept with the same rigour as the Gazette proper, and are thus rare survivors. This prints a substantial letter by Mitchell, dated from a "Camp on Snodgrass Lagoon", 14 December 1846. In the letter Mitchell is sanguine about his recent discoveries in northern New England, along the rivers Barwan, Boomi, and the Gwydir. There had been flooding of the region, and Mitchell is particularly pleased to pass on his satisfaction with the portable boats he had taken along, built by Struth of Sydney. The letter also includes his approval of Kennedy, who would soon get his own expedition to Cape York, and "two old soldiers", William Graham and John Douglas.Of equal interest is the longer letter which makes the second part of this supplement, printing a long missive from Samuel Augustus Perry, Deputy Surveyor General (Mitchell, of course, was the then Surveyor General), regarding his expedition to the River Boyne. Perry's appointment in 1831 had appalled Mitchell, not one for sharing the limelight, and for many years his Deputy was left cooling his heels in Sydney. This 1846 expedition was perhaps Perry's most substantial achievement, when he accompanied Colonel George Barney on the investigation which resulted in the proposal that Port Curtis in Queensland (Gladstone) should be the centre of a new colony of North Australia. A few spots but very good.
