        At Luxor, Thebes, Upper Egypt.

Sketches in Egypt and Nubia, from Drawings made on the Spot., 1846-9.. Pl. 66. Tinted lithograph (two tints). Original hand colouring. Very good condition. Subscribers Edition Size: 35 x 25 cm. (14 x 10 inches) Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas.

These publications represent the cumulative work of Le Verrier’s prediction of the existence of the then unknown planet Neptune, using only mathematics and astronomical observations of the planet Uranus. Realizing that the irregularity of the orbit of Uranus was due to the influence of an undiscovered planet further out, Le Verrier succeeded in computing the mass and orbit of the perturbing body. He sent his prediction of the missing planet’s position to Johann Galle (1812-1910) of the Berlin Observatory, who actually found Neptune on his first night of looking, 23 September 1846, based upon Le Verrier’s predicted location.Le Verrier (1811-1877) was encouraged by the physicist Arago, then Director of the Paris Observatory. Unknown to Le Verrier, an English scientist, John Couch Adams, had arrived at the same conclusions, though the results of Adams’ work were written in a private letter and dated two days later than Le Verrier’s public lecture to the French Academy on 31 August, 1846. Although controversy arose over the credit for the discovery, as Adams began his work before Le Verrier and indeed made the same prediction nearly a year earlier, Adams failed to publish until more than a month following Galle’s sighting. The dispute was apparently made even more difficult by Le Verrier’s arrogance and violent temper.Le Verrier went on to work on a re-evaluation of planetary motion and perturbations, and published a table of the motions of all known planets. He also theorized that the slow precession of Mercury’s orbit around the sun could not be completely explained by Newtonian mechanics, and suggested another planet in between Mercury and the sun (Vulcan). He was direct

Approach to the Temple of Wady Saboua, Nubia

1846. ROBERTS, David. Original lithograph plate, Approach to the Temple of Wady Saboua, Nubia. [London: F.G. Moon, 1842-49]. Hand-colored lithograph on onionskin, measuring 9-3/4 by 13-3/4 inches, on original mount, measuring 16-7/8 by 23-3/4 inches. $2500.Beautiful original hand-colored lithograph of the approach to the Temple of Wady Saboua, Nubia, from the superb large format first issue of RobertsÂ’ landmark work, Egypt and Nubia (only the first issue is hand-colored on onionskin and mounted on heavier card).Famed lithographer Louis Haghe produced splendid lithographs (including this print) of drawings Roberts made during his 1838-9 journey to Egypt, which were received with widespread enthusiasm when they appeared in 1846-9. “Among all the artists working in EgyptÂ… [Roberts] stands head and shoulders above the rest, both for the number of sites and monuments he recorded and for his interesting presentation” (Clayton, 6). “HagheÂ’s skillful and delicate lithography, and his faithful interpretation of RobertsÂ’ draughtsmanship and dramatic sense, combine in what are undoubtedly remarkable examples ofÂ… lithographic works. Particularly in the Egypt and Nubia section, one feels that the colossal subjects and broad vistas were ideally suited to RobertsÂ’ talent” (Abbey, 341). Slight chipping and soiling to edges of mount, one tear to mount. Print in fine condition. Exceptional hand-colored lithograph from the most famous and desirable work on Egypt.

The Count of Monte Christo ] [ The Count of Monte Cristo ] The Chateau D'If: A Romance

Simms and M'Intyre, W. S. Orr and Co., Belfast and London 1846 - TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH OF THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO. THE ONLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION BASED ON THE ORIGINAL TEXT OF THE NOVEL. Octavo (160 × 100 mm.), pp. [8], 400, [2]. With the engraved part-title, half-title, and leaf of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's plum cloth, decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. Very occasional slight spots, spine rubbed and darkened, slight restorations to extremities. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH, very rare, of any part of Le Comte de Monte Christo, and the first and only English translation based on the original text of the novel. With the original date of 24 February in the first line of the text, and the original spelling of "Monte Christo" throughout. Predating the Chapman and Hall edition of the same year. In the original publisher's cloth. Le Comte de Monte Christo first appeared as a serial in the Parisian newspaper Le Journal des Debats from 28 August 1844 to 15 January 1846. This was followed by a Brussels edition in book form (1845-1846), set up from the Journal des Débats and issued in parts, followed by a Paris edition in book form (1845-1846, now a very rare and sought-after book: the last copy to appear at auction sold for EUR 253,000 (Christie's Paris 21/4/2010)). English publishers were quick to respond to the remarkable popularity of the novel in France. First to start bringing out Monte Christo in English were Simms, M'Intyre and Orr, at the beginning of March 1846, just six weeks after the final instalment of the novel in Le Journal des Débats. Like the Brussels publishers, Simms and M'Intyre issued the novel in parts: the first third of the text (the action in Marseilles and the Chateau D'If) appeared under the title of The Chateau D'If, as volume 3 of The Parlour Novelist, a popular series published by Simms and M'Intyre between 1846 and 1863 (Sadleir vol. 2 p. 146). Following the success of The Chateau D'If, Simms and M'Intyre brought out the remaining portion of the text (the action in Rome and Paris) a little later as volumes 8 and 9 of The Parlour Novelist, under the title of The Count of Monte Christo. The title-pages of all three volumes give the translator as Emma Hardy. Simms and M'Intyre state their priority in the preface at the beginning of The Chateau D'If: "In presenting the following translation to the English Public, the publishers feel considerable gratification in being the first to make known to them this charming romance, the chef d'oeuvre of the most distinguished of French Novelists, ALEXANDRE DUMAS. . . Belfast, March 1, 1846" (p. [5]). The Simms and M'Intyre translation was based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in Le Journal des Débats. This is confirmed by the date of 24 February in the first line of the text (later revised to 28 February), and the spelling of Christo with an "h" throughout (this spelling was retained in the early Paris and Brussels editions, and was only changed to Cristo in the later first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Écho Des Feuilletons, 1846)). A second English translation (the first illustrated English translation) of Monte Christo (The Count of Monte-Cristo [sic], London, Chapman & Hall, translator unknown) also appeared in 1846. This was based on a revised text of the novel, (most obviously identified by the date of 28 February in the first line, and the spelling of Cristo without an "h" throughout). The source text for the Chapman & Hall edition was possibly the first illustrated edition published in Paris. According to Munro and Sadleir, the Chapman & Hall edition appeared after the first part of the Simms and M'Intyre edition, Parlour Novelist vol. 3, and probably just before Parlour Novelist vols. 8 and 9. "Although Parlour Novelist Nos. 8 and 9 in all likelihood post-dated the Chapman and Hall edition, No. 3 pre-dated i . . . (FULL DESCRIPTION ON REQUEST) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Discoveries in Australia; with an Account of the Coasts and Rivers Explored and Surveyed during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle

      T. & W. Boone, London 1846 - Two volumes, octavo, with 26 plates and eight folding charts (six of them tipped into pockets of the binding, as issued); bound without the Sibourne advertisements at front of vol. II, but with both of the fragile advertising slips ('South Australia and its Mines' & 'Eyre's Journal');a fine copy in the original ribbed blue-green cloth with kangaroo and emu vignettes in gilt on spines. First edition: a handsome copy in original binding of the Beagle's great Australian survey voyage, often considered the last major voyage of Australian discovery. This work recounts the third and final circumnavigation of HMS Beagle from 1837 to 1843 under Wickham and Stokes, when the ship was in Australian waters, having been dispatched by the Admiralty to complete the mapping of the remote coasts of New Holland, in particular the north-west coast and the Torres Strait.John Lort Stokes, who joined the Beagle in 1824, served on her for eighteen years, on all three circumnavigations, working up from a midshipman to be the final commander, a position he was given in Sydney in 1841. He had been the companion, that is, of everyone from Darwin to Phillip Parker King, and was easily the longest-serving officer on the famous ship. From 1837 to 1843 the Beagle was in Australian waters, her personnel completing the survey of the northwest coast, and charting rivers and exploring inland where appropriate. It was Stokes who charted and named Victoria River and Port Darwin, the latter in commemoration of his former shipmate. Stokes' time in command of the Beagle confirmed his reputation as a fine marine surveyor, and many of his charts of the northern Australia coast remained in use for over a century."Stokes is noted as an engaging, vivacious and entertaining writer. As the official account of the last major expedition of Australian discovery, his book is essential to a collection relating to coastal voyages. It is also of considerable interest to collectors of inland exploration journals, since Stokes and the crew of the Beagle undertook many expeditions inland from the coast which are recorded in his book. It is a scarce book and is eagerly sought by collectors?" (Wantrup). Provenance: Private collection (Australia). A couple of light spots but a really good copy in original binding, with just a few mild abrasions around spines. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Table Showing the State of his Navy, (1810-1859, from 1830 King of the Two Sicilies)]

1846 - both sail and steam, in a neat hand, listing the type of vessel, her name and her armaments, beginning with the 80-gun Man-of-War 'Vesuvio', carrying 58 24-pound cannons, 4 80-pound and 4 30-pound howitzers ('obici'), and 16 24-pound carronades ('caronati', short guns), also 5 Frigates, 2 Corvettes, 5 Brigantines, and 2 Schooners ('Golette'), (all sail), followed by the growing number of Steam vessels, beginning with 6 300-horsepower Frigates, each carrying a 117-pound and a 60-pound howitzer, and 4 30-pound carronades, and 6 further steam vessels, ('battelli a vapore') from 200 to 40 horsepower, including the Ferdinando II (180 h.p.), while two more frigates as above are building ('in cantiere', at Castellamare), six columns on 1 side folio and conjugate blank, no place (stationer's stamp 'Naples'), no date, circa Of the sailing vessels, the oldest is the Amalia (1811), followed by Vesuvio (1824). In 1843, with Partenope (1834) and Regina Isabella (1827), they escorted the King's sister, Princess Teresa Cristina, to Brazil, for her marriage to Pedro II. Of the steam vessels, the Ferdinando II, built in England, (1833), was the first such in the Neapolitan navy. Four of the six steam frigates listed here were launched at Gravesend in 1843, but the other two, Ercole and Archimede, were launched at Castellamare the following year, marking the beginning of steamship construction in Naples. The latest in the list appears to be the Sannite (Sannita), launched from Castellamare on 7th August 1846.

Lybian Chain of Mountains, from the Temple of Luxor

Sketches in Egypt and Nubia, from Drawings made on the Spot.. Francis Graham Moon., 1846. March 1st 1847. Lithograph. Hand coloured. Fine condition. Some light foxing to the top margin. Sheet size: 61 x 43 cm Size: 48.5 x 32.5 cm. (19 x 13 inches) Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. Sketches in Egypt and Nubia, from Drawings made on the Spot.. Francis Graham Moon.
