        The Botanical Chart of Flowering Plants and Ferns: Shewing at One View Their Chief Characteristics; Generic and Specific Names, With the Derivation; Their Localities, Properties, ect., ect., ect

      Bath - Binns and Goodwin, 1846. Bath - Binns and Goodwin, 1846 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A fantastically informative botanical chart and index, listing flowing plants and ferns. Categories include Botanical Name, English Name, Time of Flowering, Where the Plant Grows, and Medicinal and other Properties. A publisherscatalogue is located to the rear,listing many other botanical works such as Wild Flowers and Their Teachings and Natural Illustrations of the British Grasses. Look on these flowers! by Felicia Hemans is located prior to the botanical chart. Hemans' works appeared in only nineteen individual books during her lifetime, and she was described as offering a lyricism apparently consonant with Victorian chauvinism and sentimentality. Condition: In original decorative cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Externally, a trifle rubbed on spine and to extremities. Internally, firmly bound and bright. Some light spotting throughout. Copperplate signatures on endpaper and dedication page. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Erinnerungen aus dem Freischaarenzuge und der Gefangenschaft in Luzern = Souvenirs relativement aux corps francs et leur captivité à Lucerne / von J. Senn ; lith. von Gust. Affolter, Gebr. Benz.

      Soleure, J. Gasmann, 1846 - Quer-4°, 8 Textseiten, 14 lithogr. Tafeln., Privater HLwd. d. Zeit, Blätter teilweise hinterlegt, durchgehend stockfleckig, etwas fingerfleckig - Joachim Senn (1810-1847), Zeichner, Maler und Zeichenlehrer. Schüler von Martin Disteli in Olten. - Die Freischarenzüge waren zwei gescheiterte antiklerikale Umsturzversuche in der Schweiz in den Jahren 1844 und 1845. Ziel der radikal-liberalen Aufständischen war es, die konservative Regierung des Kantons Luzern zu stürzen und die Jesuiten zu vertreiben. Andere Kantone waren mit der Entsendung von Freischaren indirekt beteiligt, während die Tagsatzung sich zurückhielt. Die Aufstände hatten die Gründung des Sonderbundes zur Folge und waren Auslöser des Sonderbundskriegs. Insgesamt forderten die Kämpfe über 120 Todesopfer, davon mehr als 100 bei den Freischärlern. Die Luzerner machten rund 2000 Gefangene. Die Kantonsregierung ging gegen die Aufständischen hart vor: Über 700 Luzerner wurden zu Gefängnisstrafen verurteilt, die Freischärler aus anderen Kantonen gegen hohe Lösegeldzahlungen freigelassen. Literarischen Niederschlag fanden diese Vorkommnisse in Gottfried Kellers Erzählung «Frau Regel Amrain und ihr Jüngster», 1856 erschienen in der Novellensammlung Die Leute von Seldwyla. 1800 gr.         JOURNAL OF RANKIN DILWORTH [manuscript caption title]

      [Southern Texas & Northern Mexico]. April 28 - Sept. 19, 1846.. [Southern Texas & Northern Mexico]. April 28 - Sept. 19, 1846.. [94]pp. Approximately 16,500 words. Contemporary marbled boards, recently rebacked in modern calf. Corners worn. Internally clean. Very good. In a clear, legible hand. Mexican-American War diary kept by a young officer, a member of the 1st Infantry of Zachary Taylor's army, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Monterrey. Born in Ohio in 1822, Dilworth graduated thirteenth out of twenty- five in his class at West Point in 1844. The diary begins on April 28, 1846, with preparations for leaving Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, headed to Texas, and describes his transit down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, his travel by Gulf steamer to Brazos Santiago, and then the long, hot, dusty trek overland to Monterrey. During the intense assault on the eastern side of the city on Sept. 21st, Dilworth was mortally wounded by a Mexican cannonball. He lingered until the 27th, presumably long enough to be aware of the American victory. Primarily a military chronicle, Dilworth's diary contains his observations of the Mexican towns of Matamoros, Reynosa, Camargo, and Cerralvo. His observations include descriptions of the pretty women he saw (some of whom bathed nude), and his impressions of the places the army stayed or marched through. He records frivolity and executions in the same style. On Sept. 7th and 8th he attended two fandangos, where is appears he must have overindulged, as on the 9th he "was very sick, and had to ride in the bagg[age] wagon." In June his entries record observations on the surface of the land, describing trees and plants and houses. There are several mentions of Ben McCullough and the Texas Rangers. On Sept. 10th he mentions being promoted to Fist Lieutenant. Dilworth's narrative ends the day Taylor's army reaches Monterrey. Two days later he was caught in a murderous crossfire of cannons on the first day of the battle while attacking on the eastern side of the city. Struck by a twelve-pounder ball that tore off one leg, he lingered for six days. A very readable diary, comprised of 102 entries written by a literate and observant officer. The diary was published in 1996 as THE MARCH TO MONTERREY: THE DIARY OF LT. RANKIN DILWORTH, edited by Lawrence R. Clayton and Joseph E. Chance. Preceding the diary is Dilworth's eight-page composition "On the Rise and Fall of Nations," and a two-page composition praising the beauty and trials of life - neither of which are included in the published book. On a blank initial leaf is the ownership signature of Abby R. [Dilworth] Jones, Rankin Dilworth's sister, presumably the owner after Dilworth's death in Mexico.

        MEMORIALS OF WINCHESTER COLEGE Drawn and Lithographed By Charles W. Radclyffe [bound with] THE HISTORY OF WINCHESTER COLLEGE (the Second Work Published By Ackermann]

      Winchester: D. Nutt [& Ackermann], 1846. Winchester: D. Nutt [& Ackermann], 1846. The first work (Memorials) with tinted lithographic title page, letterpess dedication, 19 lithographic plates each with an accompanying leaf of letterpress; 1 engraved plate of seals. The second work (History of Winchester College pub. Ackermann) consists of a letterpress title page followed by 56 pages of letterpress text, but without the plates to this work. Our research suggests that the "Memorials" was issued in 8 parts during 1846 each presumably with a total of 24 litho plates, so 4 plates were not bound in.         The Adventures of OLIVER TWIST;

      , 1846. 1846. or, The Parish Boy's Progress. With Twenty-four Illustrations on Steel, by George Cruikshank. A New Edition, Revised and Corrected. London: Published for the Author by Bradbury & Evans, 1846. Original blind-stamped violet-grey cloth with spine pictorially decorated in gilt. First English One-Volume Edition, and the first with the text substantially revised by Dickens (having bought the copyright back from the original publisher Bentley, Dickens re-wrote many passages to make them more dramatic). The first edition was published in 1838, a "second edition" in 1838-1839, and a "third edition" in 1841 -- all in three volumes. The novel was then "revised and corrected" by Dickens for the 1846 issuance in ten serial parts and for this corresponding one-volume octavo edition.~This copy has stab-holes visible throughout (text and plates): this means that these particular leaves were initially issued in the serial parts (at the end of which, serial readers were encouraged to bring in their parts to have them bound into this cloth, just as new readers were encouraged to buy a copy in the same binding but made up from leaves not used in the parts). The original cloth binding is a handsome one, with gilt wreath on the front cover and with three gilt pictorial vignettes on the spine; still present are the original pale yellow endpapers. Though almost-imperceptible, this copy bears discreet evidence of having been re-cased.~Condition overall is near-fine (rear endpaper cracked, very slight mottling of the cloth color; the 24 Cruikshank plates are remarkably free of foxing). This first one-volume edition is rather uncommon (the 1846 serial parts more-so); "Eckel, mentioning the rarity of this item, questions whether a single copy could be found" [Carr]. Gimbel A39; Carr B98.

        The Slave King, or The Triumph of Liberty, or The Revolt of the Mexitili: A Tale of the Last Days of the Aztec Dynasty

      ated from Copac) - London - E. Appleyard, 1846. ated from Copac) - London - E. Appleyard, 1846 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarceearly penny dreadful focused on the Aztecs by American author Joseph Holt Ingraham (1809-1860). First and sole edition. Part of 'Roscoe's Series'. Additional illustrated title page and illustrations in the text. Publisher's catalogue to the rear. Penny Dreadful was a term applied to nineteenth century British fiction publications, usually lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks, each part costing a penny. The term, however, soon came to encompass a variety of publications that featured cheap sensational fiction, such as story papers and booklet libraries. The Penny Dreadfuls were printed on cheap pulp paper and were aimed primarily at working class adolescents. Owing to their cheap production, their perceived lack of value, and such hazards as war-time paper drives, the Penny Dreadfuls, particularly the earliest ones, are rare today. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally sound although a trifle rubbed and bumped. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright and clean aside from the odd spot, and some dust marks. Copperplate ink signature to front pastedown. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        LIFE OF THE AMIR DOST MOHAMMED KHAN OF KABUL. With his Political Proceedings towards the English, Russian, and Persian Governments, including the Victory and Disasters of the British Army in Afghanistan.

      Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans. London. 1846 - FIRST EDITION. 2 VOLUMES. 8vo. (9.1 x 6 inches). 19 lithographic portraits, printed on India paper and mounted. Publisher's forest green fine combed cloth, title gilt to spines, blind panelling and central lozenge to the boards, mid-cream surface-paper endpapers. Very slightly rubbed, some off-setting from the plates, but overall a superb set in the original cloth. A remarkably well-preserved set of this highly desirable work. ----- Perhaps the key source for political and diplomatic background to the First Afghan War. Mohan Lal was "Bokhara"; Burnes's most important intelligence operative, travelling extensively in Persia and Afghanistan and running a string of agents for the British. In 1841, as the situation in Kabul became critical, Lal tried to warn Burnes of the fact that he was the focus of rising discontent, but the Englishman foolishly believed that he would be able to talk his way out of the situation. Lal escaped the ensuing bloodbath, continuing to supply information from the Afghan capital. In 1844 he visited Scotland to return some papers to the Burnes family, the Montrose Review describing him then in glowing, if condescending, terms; "He is a very handsome man, of 28 years; and, when arrayed in the costly and gorgeous costume of his country, affords a favourable specimen of the Asiatic. But this is the least of his merits: his countenance beams with intelligence, and his intercourse with Europeans has enabled him to adapt himself, with perfect tact, to all their habits and modes of thinking, so that he can sustain with ease and propriety his part in any general conversation. We understand he has been urgently recalled to London ". He remained in London for some time, the present work being written there and dedicated with permission to Queen Victoria, but he never received the recognition from the British government that he felt he deserved. As a result of his service in Muslim countries, he had been excommunicated by the Kashmiri Pandit community, eventually converting to Islam, he died an isolated and embittered man in Delhi in 1877.         The Life of Jesus, Critically Examined by Dr. David Friedrich Strauss. Translated from the Fourth German Edition [by Mary Ann Evans]

      London: Chapman, Brothers, 1846.. London: Chapman, Brothers, 1846.. First edition in English, with a preface for this edition by Strauss.. Edges very slightly rubbed; fine copy.. Parrish, Victorian Lady Novelists, pages 4-5. 3 vols, 8vo, later brown half morocco, marbled sides, gilt lettering, t.e.g., others untrimmed. Half-titles present. ¦ The first book by Evans, who would later become famous for her writings under the pseudonym George Eliot. StraussÕ groundbreaking, radical biography of Jesus, Das Leban Jesu, was widely supported in young intellectual circles in England, though several years after its first appearance in German in 1835 there remained no edition in English. Encouraged by numerous friends, Evans - then a 25-year-old aspiring writer who was not fluent in German - agreed to take on the task of translation, which took her two years, and she was paid a mere £20.00 for her efforts. Though the financial compensation was meager, Evans was rewarded by StraussÕ high praise for the translation in his preface.
