The History of Margaret Catchpole, a Suffolk Girl

London: Henry Colburn, 1845. Hardcover. A fictionalized account of a servant girl transported to New South Wales in Australia for stealing a horse. That scene is the subject of the frontispiece of the 2nd volume, where Margaret is charmingly disguised as a boy. An interesting contemporary letter in a copy of the 1847 edition currently listed by a London bookseller says that Catchpole's family in Sydney burned every copy of the book they could find, and that her descendants number in the top ten in Sydney, including a judge in NSW named Innes. 8vo, 3 vols: xii, 316pp (&) (iv), 291pp (&) iv, 284pp, frontispiece & 6 aquatint plates, no ads at rear. Early half calf and pebbled cloth boards, all edges marbled, some mild water marks on plates, o/w a very nice copy. Ferguson 4009. The charming aquatint plates are from drawings by the author. Includes a manuscript note at the end correcting the printed statement that Catchpole died in 1841, saying she was still alive in 1844. OCLC: 154615245.

Leone Leoni; or, The Intensity of Woman's Love, from the French . With Engravings.

      W. Dugdale 16 Holywell Street c 1845 - with 8 woodcut illustrations in the text, slightly browned, a few minor stains, thumbing, pp. 130, small 8vo, recent calf backed boards, good. An unrecorded, and apparently the first, English translation of George Sand's early novel, first published in Paris in 1835: there is no 19th-century English translation in COPAC. The publisher, William Dugdale, was the 'kingpin of pornography' (Pearsall, The Worm in the Bud, p. 52). In fact Dugdale's early publications, of which this is one, were comparatively mild, though the extended title (not present in the original) is clearly intended to excite would-be purchasers - however, the illustrations are melodramatic at most. The novel had been quickly translated into several languages, including Czech and Armenian. COPAC does record another George Sand novel published by Dugdale, Indiana, ?1840 (BL only), with the translation attributed to James Campbell Reddie in the Ashbee catalogue, and no doubt the same is true of this one

NARRATIVE OF AN EXPEDITION ACROSS THE GREAT SOUTH-WESTERN PRAIRIES,

, 1845. 1845. Good. KENDALL, George W. NARRATIVE OF AN EXPEDITION ACROSS THE GREAT SOUTH- WESTERN PRAIRIES, FROM TEXAS TO SANTA FE; with an account of the disasters which befel the expedition from want of food and the attack of hostile indians; the final capture of the Texans and their sufferings on a march of two thousand miles as prisoners of war, and in the prisons and lazarettos of Mexico. In two volumes. London: David Bogue, Fleet Street, 1845. Second British edition. Two octavo volumes: xii,[13]-432; viii,[13]- 436 pp. Frontispiece in each volume and a folding map in V. 1 of "Texas and part of Mexico & the United States. Showing the route of the first Santa Fe Expedition." Publisher's binding of green cloth with gilt- stamped spine title. Cloth is lightly sunned on spines and sides show slight rubbing. The upper board of the first volume is detached and the volume should be recased. Upper joint of the second volume is split and the board, which is barely attached by threads, needs to be rehinged, though the bookblock is sound. Ex-library; bookplate at front pastedown and a few, small blind-stamped seals within, but no external marks. The bindings have a good appearance as the cloth is relatively clean and complete, but need repair as described. The set is offered as is. (Jenkins 116.C, Howes K74, Sabin 37360, Wagner & Camp 110). George Wilkins Kendall (1809-1867) founded the New Orleans Picayune and became a leading proponent for Texas. In 1841, he joined an expedition from Texas which was planning to conquer Santa Fe. Travelling through an unfamiliar and hostile environment, and improperly equipped, the expedition nearly starved and survived only by eating hore-flesh. The members almost made it to Santa Fe and were tricked into surrendering without a fight. Despite his declaration that he was a non-combatant member of the press, Kendall was taken to Mexico, along with other prisoners, and imprisoned for nearly two years. Kendall wrote twenty-three letters from prison which were published in the Picayune between June 17, 1841 and April 30, 1842; and upon his release he began writing a book on the expedition which was published serially in the Picayune, in June through August 1842 and November 1842 through April 1843,They According to Jenkins, "not only is this the best account of the Santa Fe Expedition, it is one of the best campaign

Spain. A Hand-Book for Travellers in Spain.

John Murray London 1845 - First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xii, vi. 1-556, 557-1064, 2 folded maps, 2 folding maps laid down on linen, some ink writing inside, 19th century mottled green calf, marbled endpapers, spines gilt, red morocco label, gilt lettered, spines faded, marbled edges; overall a fine copy. Ford's work on Spain is considered to be one the great works on Spain. In Ford's obituary in the Times commonly attributed to Sir W. Stirling Maxwell " so great a literary achievement had never before been performed under so humble a title; " Richard Ford spent four years in Spain acquiring his extraordinary knowledge of the country by a series of long riding tours, (1830-1834). He went to live in Spain because of his wife's health. For 3 years he wintered in Seville and lived in the Alhambra in the summer(1830-4). He immersed himself in the Spanish way of life and wrote in such detail that Murray's later editions of this title had to be abridged. Lister 176. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        An original design for porcelain

[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing, mild creasing, a 5/8" tear at the right edge of the image, and a few small brown stains in the margins. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."         SCOTTISH GENEALOGICAL MANUSCRIPT. THE EARLS OF ROSS & ABBOTS OF FEARN

ANE BREVE CHRONICLE OF THE EARLS OF ROSS AND THE ABBOTS OF FEARN Copied from the original manuscript in the possession of Sir Charles William Augustus Ross of Balnagown, Bart. Square 8vo. pp. 119 + blanks. Contemporary cloth backed boards, worn to the extremities. Manuscript copy made c. 1845 of an earlier manuscript. "The original is in very bad condition, the half of one of the leaves being entirely wanting in one place, & several leaves wanting in others. It is written in a hand in the early part of the 17th century: and internal evidence proves it to have been written previous to the year 1615." An intriguing manuscript which appears to differ from other versions of the same document. The Cronicle was privately printed in 1850, edited by W.R.B. and it possible that this is one of the transcripts that were made of the various copies that he inspected. Comparing this transcript with the published version [copy supplied], it is found to be a reasonably accurate transcript of the main body of the work comprising the first 52 pages of this manuscript. The latter half of the manuscript is not in the printed version other than a few notes on the family of Ross and I have been unable to trace any printed copies of this quite extensive genealogical information. It may therefore represent the only copy of these charters and documents outside of the originals held by the Earls of Ross.

Sailing Direction for the Coast and Harbours of North America, comprehending the entire navigation from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Florida

Blachford and Imray, London 1845 - (8 x 5 1/8 inches). [2], xiii, [1], 3-142pp. (Trimmed close at the lower margin). Modern brown cloth. Rare work of sailing directions for North American waters. A rare compilation for the navigator sailing American waters, derived from the surveys of Des Barres, Holland, Lockwood, Demayne, Monteath, and others. Michael Blachford, the successor of the family chartmaking business begun by Robert Blachford (1804-1835), operated from 1835-1846, before being bought out by his partner James Imray. Various issues (with varying pagination) of these sailing directions were published as early as 1836; the present undated example includes a footnote on page vii dated 1844, suggesting the 1845 publication date. OCLC cites but two pre-1846 examples in North American libraries (New York Public and Boston Public). Cf. Sabin 5665 (1836 edition of 75 pages) and 5666 (1842 edition of 95pp.).
