THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures for Little Children. After the tenth edition of the celebrated German work.

24 pages printed and hand-coloured on rectos only. Original printed paper-covered boards. Quarto. Second English edition. Lacking rear blank endpaper; original covers with loss of some of the printed paper surface and generally cracked and rubbed; spine repaired and some paper restoration to covers; juvenile scribble on page 20 ['O Dear.']; some spotting and soiling internally, but generally very good and, overall, an acceptable copy of a very early edition. Contained in a morocco-backed folding box. Originally published in Germany in 1845 as Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder, with only 15 pages, the book was expanded and renamed Struwwelpeter in 1847. Hoffmann instructed his publishers to issue the book in strong boards but with a frail paper spine, hoping that children would quickly read the book to pieces, and parents be forced to buy another copy; this accounts for the dearth of copies surviving in original boards. As with all genuine copies of early printings, the government's tax stamp appears on the upper board. The book was first published in English in 1848.

        Le Juif Errant

Brussels - H. Bourlard, 1845. Brussels - H. Bourlard, 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A charming little set of Joseph Marie Eugene Sue's popular serial novel. He was strongly affected by the Socialist ideas of the day, and these prompted his most famous works, the anti-Catholic novels: Les Mystres de Parisand Le Juif errant. The latter, offered here in an early edition (printed one year after the original publication date of 1844), was a serially published novel, which attained great popularity in Paris, and beyond. le Juif errant isheld to have influenced legislation on the Jesuits, and caused a general jesuitophobie. The novel is over 800 pages long. An opera, Le Juif errant, by Fromental Halvy, was based on elements of the novel. Featuring unusual and sporadicpagination throughout. With neat ink inscription dated 1944 to verso of each front blank. Complete in five volumes. Condition: In half diced calf bindings with marbled boards. The Works of that Learned and Judicious Divine Mr. Richard HookerIn Three Volumes

Oxford - The University Press, 1845. Oxford - The University Press, 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractive set of anthologies containing the theologicaland scholastic essays from Anglican priest and influential theologian, Richard Hooker. Third edition. Featuring two folding plates to volume one; onegenealogicaltable anda facsimile of notes by Hooker, Cranmer, and Sandys. Collated complete. Hooker's emphases on reason, tolerance and the value of tradition came to exert a lasting influence on the development of the Church of England. In retrospect he has been taken (with Thomas Cranmer and Matthew Parker) as a founder of Anglican theological thought. With an Account of his Life and Death, by Isaac Walton. King James I is quoted by Walton as saying, I observe there is in Mr. Hooker no affected language; but a grave, comprehensive, clear manifestation of reason, and that backed with the authority of the Scriptures, the fathers and schoolmen, and with all law both sacred and civil. Hooker's emphasis on Scripture, reason, and tradition considerably influenced the development of Anglicanism, as well as many political philosophers, including John Locke. This edition is important both for the editorial revisions discussed in Kebles Preface and for the comments that Keble, one of the leaders of the Oxford movement, makes about Hooker. (Cited from the catalogue to The Antiquarian Library Of Emeritus Professor David A. Pailin. )From the private library of theologian and professor of philosophy, David A. Pailin. Complete in three volumes. Condition: Rebound in smart half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, all volumes are smart with only some light rubbing. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound and bright. Generally clean, although with the very occasional spot and handling mark. Intermittent institutional ink stamps. Neat copperplate ink signature to the original front free endpaper of each volume, as well as David Pailin's bookplate pasted to the front pastedown of each volume. Overall: VERY GOOD, an attractive, crisp set in spite of library stamps..

        Biographical and Critical Miscellanies

London - Richard Bentley, 1845. London - Richard Bentley, 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. William H. Prescott's Biographical and Critical Miscellanies. Direct from the library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper, and the armorial bookplate of S. E. Widdrington to the front pastedown. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering. First Edition. Black and white frontis with tissue guard. Essays include Irving's Conquest of Granada, Cervantes, Sir Walter Scott, Moliere, Italian Narrative Poetry, and Scottish Song. The following Essays, with a single exception, have been selected from contributions originally made to the North American Review. They are purely of a literary character; and as they have little reference to local or temporary topics, and as the Journal in which they appeared, though the most considerable in the United States, is not widely circulated in Great Britain, it has been thought that a republication of the Articles might have some novelty and interest for the English reader - Preface. William Hickling Prescott (17961859) was an American historian, known for his books The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic and The History of the Conquest of Mexico. In all his works he displayed great research, impartiality, and an admirable narrative power. Prescott was a man of amiable and benevolent character, and enjoyed the friendship of many of the most distinguished men in Europe as well as in America. Samuel Edward Widdrington (formerly Cook), 1787 - 1856, was an English writer. Having served as a Captain in the Royal Navy, he lived for some years in Spain. He served as High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1854. He was a fellow of the Royal Society, and the Royal Geographical Society. By royal license he assumed the name Widdrington, and purchased the moiety in 1842. He inherited the Newton Hall estate from his father, Joseph Cook. Condition: The binding is generally tight and firm. The inner hinges are very slightly strained. There is only some mild wear to the extremities, with just some mild sunning to the spine, and slight bumping. Internally the pages have very mild browning to the page edges, with the occsaional spot, becoming prominent to the first few pages. Overall the condition is very good..

        The Illustrated Family Bible

Glasgow - Francis Orr and Sons, 1845. Glasgow - Francis Orr and Sons, 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A large, attractively boundfamily Bible, with notes from Reverend John Brown. John Brown of Haddington (1722 1787), was a Scottish divine and author. His works include The Self-Interpreting Bible, The Dictionary of the Bible, and A General History of the Christian Church. The Self Interpreting Bible was Brown's most significant work, and it remained in print (edited by others), until well into the twentieth century. The objective of providing a commentary for ordinary people was very successful. The idea that the Bible was self-interpreting involved copious marginal references, especially comparing one scriptural statement with another. Brown also provided a substantial introduction to the Bible, and added an explication and reflections for each chapter. With blank family register to front. Coloured title pages to some of the gospels, presumed complete. Condition: In a decorative morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, with some rubbing and some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mainly clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        Halmaturus Dorsalis: Gray [Black-striped Wallaby]

      - [London: by the Author, 1845-1863]. Hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and H.C.Richter. Wove paper. 14 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches. An iconic image of a kangaroo family from John Gould's great folio work "The Mammals of Australia" Originally published in 13 parts between 1840 and 1863, Gould's work represents his only serious foray away from the world of birds and into that of mammals. The accuracy of the colouring and the beauty and accuracy of the plates mean that the work is still highly valued today. It represents one of the first concerted efforts to record the extraordinary fauna of Australia. Cf. Ferguson 10032; cf. Nissen ZBI 1661; cf. Sauer 14; cf. Wood p.365.

The Reports of The Most Learned Sir Edmund Saunders, Knt

London - William Benning and Co., 1845. London - William Benning and Co., 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A selection of legal reports and records of the cases of Sir Edmund Saunders. Sixth edition. Sir Edmund Saunders (died 1683) was an English judge, promoted to a high position at the end of the reign of Charles II of England. His Reports make it clear that Saunders acquired a large practice at the bar: North says that he was honest, clever and a drinker. In 1680 Saunders defended Anne Price, who was indicted for attempting to suborn one of the witnesses in the Popish Plot; and in the same year he was assigned as counsel for William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, and the four other Catholic peers accused of high treason. In 1681 he appeared on behalf of the Crown against Edward Fitzharris and Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, both of whom were indicted for high treason. In May 1682 he moved the king's bench for the discharge of Lord Danby, and in the following month he defended William Pain against the charge of writing and publishing letters suggesting that Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey had murdered himself. Complete in three volumes (volume II has been split between two books). Condition: Rebound in half-vellum. Externally, quite smart, although with some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signatures to title pages. Pages are mainly bright and clean, with just some slight marginal age-toning and the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

La Rigolbochomanie Croquis Lithographiques & Choregraphiques

Paris: Bureau du Charivari et Chez Martinet, 1845. Paris: Bureau du Charivari et Chez Martinet, 1845. Vernier, Charles. La Rigolbochomanie Croquis Lithographiques & Choregraphiques. Paris: Bureau du Charivari et Chez Martinet, (ca. 1845). Original orange boards. 30 lithographs printed in black. Front hinge restored, occasional foxing, not noticeable except for title page. Rigolbochomanie satirizes the can-can craze as it swept Parisian women who, to the amusement of men, attempted to emulate the brilliant and agile Rigolboche. Since the can-can was also considered a risque and shocking dance in a time when "an excessive display of ankle was considered dissolute" (Oxford Intl. Encyclopedia of Dance), this work documents the willingness of contemporary women to assert their sexual identity, in spite of accepted mores. Rigolboche (born Amelie Marguerite Badel) was a much celebrated music-hall performer of the mid 19th century. She was one of the first professional dancers to popularize the "can-can," and she was certainly the most accomplished. Originally, the can-can was a couple's dance in which the woman would flirtatiously kick her leg as high as possible and fling open her flaring petticoat. When performed by a professional, the can-can is a "complicated and technically demanding dance. Its most spectacular step is a pirouette on one foot, with the other foot grasped around the ankle and raised to eye level" (Oxford). The artist, Charles Vernier, was primarily a theatrical illustrator in the employ of "Charivari" between the years of 1845 and 1860. References: Leslie II, 541: DDM 2557.
