        THE CHARLESTON BOOK: A MISCELLANY IN PROSE AND VERSE

      Charleston, Samuel Hart 1845 - First edition. Original Publisher’s cloth, 8vo, viii, 404 pages. Includes Penina Moise’s "Miriam" and "The Convict. " Includes Harby’s "The Fall of Jerusalem. " The first Jew to publish a book of poetry in the United States—and a woman—Penina Moise (1797-1880) was one of the most prolific and creative writers of poetry on Jewish themes in America. She was also superintendent of the first Jewish religious school in Charleston and many of her poems and songs focused on jewish history and heritage in order to encourage a sense of pride in the Jewish faith of her school-children. Teacher, playwright, literary critic and newspaper editor Isaac Harby (1728-1828) was an early advocate of reforms in Judaism in Charleston, South Carolina. "’Charleston book-seller and Reform Jewish leader Samuel Hart, Sr. , proposed that Charlestonians join the trend’" of putting together an anthology of writings by city residents, much as several other cities had done throughout the late 1830s. Simms, the leading literary figure of Charleston, and one of the nation’s most widely-read and celebrated authors, was an easy choice for the project’s editor. Conceived of in 1841, and finally published in 1845, The Charleston Book found little commercial success. Yet, the book is an important document of the vibrant literary scene of mid-century Charleston, one which reveals much about Simms’s understanding of the relationship of his home city and region to the overall intellectual life of the nation" (Moltke-Hansen in Simmons, 2014) . A similar copy sold for over USD 1150 at auction in 2014. Wear to boards, lacks the front end paper. Otherwise a solid nice copy, some foxing, in the original publisher's cloth binding. Good Condition. (amr-45-46) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        CATALOGUE DE LIVRES FRANÇAIS, ANGLAIS, ALLEMANDS, ESPAGNOLS, GRECS ET LATINS, ITALIENS, PORTUGAIS, ORIENTAUX, ETC. ... SUIVI DE PRIX COURANTS

      Paris: Hector Bossange, Maison de Commission, 1845. contemporary half morocco, top edge gilt. thick 8vo. contemporary half morocco, top edge gilt. (xvi), 984 pages. A massive catalogue of 984 pages, the vast bulk of which (pp.1-802) is devoted to books as noted in the title. Some of this is very interesting, especially the section on the arts and architecture, which includes some rare and expensive books. The second part is of even more interest as it contains sections on maps, globes and spheres, astronomical instruments, and "machines typographiques" (with lithographic illustrations of the Stanhope Press, the Columbian Press, the Presse Française and the Machine à Glacier). This is followed by eight leaves of type specimens and "Les Articles pour la Reliure" which includes four folding plates of shiny glazed black paper printed in gold showing 'Fers a Doreur.' The two final plates are more fers a doreur and include two fully blocked spines, a fully blocked cover and other stamps, rolls and lines. These are in perfect condition and have great appeal as well as obvious documentary value for historians of 1840s binding. The letterpress lists also include skins for binding with prices. The final leaf of this section is Daguerreotypes, both full apparatus and plates. Contemporary bookplates of the Franklin Library of Boston and the later 19th century bookplate of the Lawrence Public Library. Rubbed, hinges rubbed but sound.

        An introduction to perspective

      1845. HAYTER, Charles. An introduction to perspective practical geometry, drawing and painting; a new and perfect explanation of the mixture of colours; with practical directions for miniature, crayon, and oil painting...with...colour plates. xiv, [ii], 276 pp. Illustrated with engraved author's portrait, 150 engraved text illustrations and 5 chromolithographic plates. 8vo., 222 x 135 mm, bound in publisher's original brown cloth and embossed gilt cartouche on front cover, newly rebacked. London: Samuel Bagster & Sons, 1845. Originally published 1813. The present edition is given a long notice by Professor Herbert: "This 1845 publication has very handsome color lithographs involving the collaboration of Owen Jones, among others. Secondary colors are in some cases derived from overprinting of the three primary ones, and "ancient" color is shown to lead towards black, whereas "modern" color insists on white. Hayter's text (and one color plate) shows the advantage of spinning color disks, in which the three primaries will form white, and he looks forward to later developments also by stressing that "certain colours" of objects, that is, local color, must give way to what the artist actually sees. He must "resign all previous acquaintance with the colours of objects, especially distant ones, and confine himself purely to optical conviction," a pragmatic emphasis upon visual versus remembered qualities which, together with the aspiration toward light, looks forward to the Impressionists" (Yale Library Gazette, July 1974, p. 14). Hayter was an early exponent of the three-colour theory of the physicist Thomas Young (1773-1829). In 1802 Young had proposed that all colours could be mixed from the three primary colours - red, blue and yellow (Young was the initiator of the wave theory of light). Owen Jones, author of the incomparable Grammar of Ornament, 1856, was to become a leading Victorian authority on colour. His beautiful plates - the first of their kind to be printed in colour - represent a breakthrough in the dissemination of colour theory. PROVENANCE: With the bookplate of Raymond and Annie Lister (Lister was a major authority on Samuel Palmer.) Birren Collection 306. Vagnetti FIb15 (but not citing this edition).

Hartford: E.B. and E.C. Kellogg, 1845. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of this celebrated collection of silhouettes of distinguished Americans. All the portraits, except for that of George Washington, were based on sketches made from life by the portrait artist William Brown. Each portrait is accompanied by a plate displaying a facsimile of the subject's handwriting, typically reproducing it from a piece of correspondence. Among the subjects portrayed are John Marshall, John Q. Adams, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, John C. Calhoun, De Witt Clinton, Martin Van Buren, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John Randolph. William Brown (1808-1883), renowned silhouette artist, often cut his silhouette portraits from memory. One of his most famous group portraits was the 25-foot long silhouette of members of the St. Louis fire department. A fine copy of this rare book. "Almost the entire edition was destroyed by fire, and copies are extremely rare" (Harry Peters, America on Stone. NY: Doubleday, etc., 1931). Howes B871 ("b"); cf.         Travels in Luristan and Arabistan { Volumes I & II }

      London: J. Madden and Co, 1845. TWO VOLUME SET: "Luristan, or the land of the Lurs, embraces the greater portion of the mountainous country of Persia - The low country, lying to the south of this Chain of mountains - is denominated Khuzistan or Arabistan. These regions, which in general now offer to the eye the melancholy spectacle of decay, of devastation, and even spread out at intervals into utter wilderness, were not so in former ages. There was a time when they must have teemed with an industrious population, as the vestiges of ruined towns plainly denote - It is with a view of rescuing from a second oblivion this once classical ground, that the author has endeavoured to draw aside a corner of the veil which still covers this mysterious region" (preface, pp. iv-vii). (2). 2 volumes, 8vo, (222 x 140mm.). 15 wood-engraved or tinted-lithographed plates, 2 folding, and 2 folding maps. p. xx, 404; p.xii, 398 [ ii ] 16pp adv. A very nice copy indeed, professionally recased using early half leather and boards, gilt titles to spine, 5 compartments. Pages are excellent and plates etc very good indeed. There are about 6 neat blind stamps to margin heads, fitted with new pastedowns and end papers. There are some neat pencil notes within a small amount of the text, which personally I believe, in this example adds to the volumes as the notes are believed to be those of Colonel (temporary Brigadier-General) Edmund Boteler Burton, Indian Army - 17th Bengal Cavalry. 1861-1942. These are easily removed however. Plates with tissue guards. Very nice set.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good +. 8vo.

        Can Abolitionists Vote or Take Office under the United States Constitution? The Anti-Slavery Examiner. No. 13

      New York: American Anti-Slavery Society, 1845. First edition. Stitched self wrappers. Wrappers soiled and worn at edges, otherwise very good. 8vo. Advocating "no union with slaveholders," Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), on the executive committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and one of the most radical abolitionists of the time, argues that no abolitionist can conscientiously vote or hold office since the Constitution acknowledges the validity of slavery. "Slaveholders monopolize the offices and dictating the policy of the government -prostituting the strength and influence of the Nation to the support of slavery here and elsewhere- trampling on the right of the free states, making the courts of the country their tools." This was the Garrisonian position which argued it was pointless to attempt to banish slavery by electoral means; instead, the free states should secede. Any compromise with evil is fatal. One of the most important documents by the Radical Abolitionists. Sabin 81919. Dumond p.10. LCP. Afro-Americana, 2nd ed. Suppl. 1712. Amer. Imprints 455202.

Preserved in a half green morocco folding box. London: Ackermann, 1845-47. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of the first illustrated encyclopedia of traditional Scottish tartans. Dedicated to Queen Victoria. With the two-page list of subscribers. Logan and McIan's Clans of the Scottish Highlands was a ground-breaking work on Scottish ethnology and remains one of the finest historical records of the dress of this ancient people. The book describes the individual clans of the Highlands in a brief text, and then offers an artistic rendering of a male or female Highlander in the characteristic tartan dress. The full-page hand-coloured lithographs have often been sought-after in the print trade, thus a substantial number of copies have been dismembered over the years. The artist of the 72 coloured lithographs, Robert Ranald McIan (1803-1856), began as a Scottish actor who performed at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theater in the late 1830s. McIan turned to painting later in his life, specializing in scenes and inhabitants from his native Scottish Highlands. Due to the popularity of the Waverley Novels by Sir Walter Scott interest in the Highlands of Scotland was riding a high tide at the mid-point of the Victorian era. With the repeal of the unpopular English law in 1782 prohibiting the wearing of Highland dress, McIan and James Logan (author of the landmark The Scottish Gael, 1831) decided to collaborate in producing this landmark work. Overall a most attractive copy with excellent impressions of McIan's coloured lithographs. Some minor repairs to binding extremities, volumes recased. In the original publisher's bindings. Abbey, Life 426. Tooley 322. Hiller 550. Colas 1892.

        Well-documented Porcelain Soup Plate from a Child?s Doll Dinner Service owned by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

      n.p., n.d. Porcelain soup plate, 3? diameter, 1.5? diameter base, transfer decorated pink rose borders, gilt highlights. Part of a child?s doll dinner service.Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, a medieval city famous for its porcelain. His family moved to Paris in 1845 when Renoir was four. His first home in Paris was an apartment near the Louvre museum. In 1854, at 13, Renoir accepted a position as an apprentice in the porcelain factory, Lévy frères, where he painted designs on china plates, cups, and vases. His skillful work earned a good income and the nickname Monsieur Rubens. In 1858, when automation of the porcelain factory made Renoir's position obsolete, Renoir tried other jobs including painting murals for cafes, religious hangings for missionaries, and decorations on fans. Renoir made frequent visits to the Louvre ?" near his apartment and the factory ?" studying the art of earlier French masters. At the age of 20, in 1861, he became a student at the art school of Charles Gleyre.In his book ?La Vie et l'Oeuvre de Pierre-Auguste Renoir,? his agent, Ambroise Vollard, describes seeing a miniature service in Renoir's dining room: ?I saw on the sideboard shelf of the dining room, a small coffee service and two candlesticks made out of porcelain, decorated by hand, well applied ... ?Those are the only pieces I still have from my old career as a porcelain decorator', Renoir told me.? This is also mentioned in ?Renoir in Time? by noted French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.This porcelain soup plate was originally in the Pierre Auguste Renoir Personal Artifacts and Archives Collection consigned to Hantman?s in 2005 by Renoir?s grandson, Paul Renoir (1924-2005), son of his youngest child Claude (1901-1969). As part of his inheritance, Claude received Renoir?s home, Les Collettes, in Cagnes-asur-Mer in the south of France, which contained most of the personal property in this collection.

        The Castle of Indolence:

      London - M. M. Holloway, 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An uncommonillustrated edition of James Thomson's Castle of Indolence. Thomson (1700 1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright, known for his masterpiece The Seasons and the lyrics of Rule, Britannia! According to the Nuttall Encyclopedia, the Castle of Indolence is a place in which the dwellers live amid luxurious delights, to the enervation of soul and body. The poem is written in Spenserian stanzas at a time when they were considered outdated and initiated an interest in this stanza form which would later have a strong influence upon the English Romantic poets Byron, Wordsworth, and Keats. Featuring a proliferation ofengravings by F. Joubert, E. Webb,and others, after designs by William Rimer. First edition. Condition: In a full cloth binding with gilt decoration.
