Partially colored lithograph printed in 1845 by Nathaniel Currier, later of Currier and Ives, commemorating George Washington?s journey to New York City for the first presidential inauguration

"Partly colored lithograph, 1 page, framed to 12.5? x 16.5?, lithograph 9.5? x 13.5? showing. New York, New York, 1845. Frame in fair condition, lithograph very fine condition. The lithograph, printed in 1845, is titled ?Washington?s Reception by the Ladies, on Passing the Bridge at Trenton, N.J. April 1789, on His Way to New York to be Inaugurated First President of the United States?. Draped across the archway in the foreground is a banner that reads, in whole, ?The Defender of the Mothers will be... The Protector of the Daughters.? On the midsection of the banner is written ?Battle of Trenton Dec. 26th 1776.? The eagle, perched on top of the archway has another strand of cloth in its mouth, ?Princeton? and ?Monmouth?, the two other significant Revolutionary War battles, which took place in New Jersey. The lithograph details Washington, upon a white horse, wearing a blue coat and tipping his hat in recognition of the crowd. Above the archway sits an eagle flanked by four American flags, each with only twenty-seven stars. At the time of the printing, Texas had yet to become the twenty-eighth state until December 29, 1845. The original thirteen states are represented above the eagle. Currier printed this lithograph as a sole proprietor at his headquarters on Spruce Street, in New York City, five years before James Ives came to work for him. Currier originally was apprenticed to the Boston printing firm of the Pendleton?s. Then, in 1833, he worked for M. E. D. Brown in Philadelphia. The next year, he moved to New York City, where he worked at several failed printing firms until venturing out and beginning his own in 1835. In 1850 Ives came to work for Currier as a bookkeeper. His talents as a marketer and businessman grew the company even more, and by 1857 he was made a full time partner, thus changing the name to the famous ?Currier and Ives?. "

        THE CHIMES

1845. A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year out and a New Year in. New-York: Harper & Brothers, 1845. Inside cover ads dated Feb 1845 (front) and Dec 1844 (rear). Original printed wrappers. First American Edition (? -- precedence between this and E. Winchester's edition is unknown, as both were quickly and cheaply produced, bound in wrappers without illustrations). Podeschi lists the Harper edition first, but that does not necessarily mean it was published first; Podeschi also notes that the Winchester edition "was probably published early in 1845," with no similar note regarding Harper. (There was also an 1845-dated cloth-bound edition published by Carey & Hart of Philadelphia, complete with illustrations adapted from the London edition -- but it would have taken C&H much longer to produce this edition than it did Harper or Winchester.)~This is a near-fine copy, with very minor fraying along the wrapper's edge (there is a contemporary Bowery bookseller's small label on the front cover). As with Gimbel's second copy, there is no "Bookhout.SC." printed within the title page design. Quite remarkable condition for a very scarce, fragile book. Podeschi A87; Wilkins p. 38. Housed in a cloth folding case.

Autograph Letter Signed "Mohan Lal," Informing his Correspondent that "a Ticket for admission to the Botanical Garden has been forwarded to me by Mr. Oliveira & therefore I beg you not to take any trouble."]

London 1845 - [London]: 53 Manchester Street, 11 June 1845. Duodecimo (ca. 13,5x9 cm). 2 pp., with an integral blank leaf. Brown ink on paper with a blind stamped monogram in the upper left corner. Mild fold marks, minor stains on verso of the second blank leaf, otherwise a very good letter. A rare letter by Mohan Lal (Zutshi) - one of the few native Indian players of the Great Game who greatly contributed to the British victory in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1838-1842). The letter was written in England where Mohan Lal lived after the end of the war. His two major books, "Travels in the Panjab, Afghanistan & Turkistan to Balk, Bokhara, and Herat" and "Life of the Amir Dost Mohammed Khan, of Kabul" were to be published in London the following year. The latter is considered a primary source on the First English-Afghan War. An offspring of a Kashmiri noble family from Delhi, Mohan Lal attended the newly formed Delhi English College. In 1832-1834 he accompanied Sir Alexander Burnes on his expedition to Central Asia with the aim of political and military intelligence; they became close friends. "Later, Lal was the Commercial Agent for the British on the Indus and Political Assistant to Burnes in Kabul during the first Afghan War. Unlike Burnes, he survived the massacres of 1841 and continued to keep Calcutta informed of events in the Afghan capital from the house of a merchant where he had taken refuge [.] Mohan Lal played a major role in securing the release of British prisoners held hostage in Bamiyan" (Wikipedia). In the letter Mohan Lal mentions Benjamin Oliveira, a British politician and businessman, writer, philanthropist, Member of Parliament and Director of the British Institution of Beaux Arts and Painting (See more: British Armorial Bindings/ University of Toronto Libraries on-line).

Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Raven' First Printing in 'The American Review'

New York:: Wiley and Putnam,. 1845.. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Bound volume for the year 1845, January, February, March, May and June; with the February issue, in which Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Raven' was published for the first time. The April issue (pp331-341) never bound in. Late in 1844 Poe first attempted to have the poem published in Graham's Magazine, where he had served as editor beginning in 1841; in 1842 Poe's rival Rufus Wilmot Griswold became editor. Graham's rejected 'The Raven' in 1844, although Poe was paid $15. The poem was first printed in the February 1845 issue of the American Review, and became an instant sensation. The poem, at the table of contents, is listed with the pseudonym 'Quarles'. Poe found inspiration from both Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Barrett, in the notion of a talking raven in Barnaby Rudge, and in Barrett's meter and rhythm. 8vo, pp1-656 (with April issue lacking as stated above), extremely bright copy. Bound in the original blue gray papered boards with contemporary quarter tan calf. No title on spine, spine aged but stable. Hinges somewhat tender, but a fine unadulterated copy, scrupulously white text. With a Silas Ketcham, Hopkinton N.H. bookplate inside the front cover, a partially removed label from the New Hampshire Antiquarian Society, and a Rufus Merrill printed library notice, and S. Ketchum and number in contemporary hand at the ffep.

An original design for two porcelain vases

[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from a few light foxing marks. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."         THE SHIPWRECKED ORPHANS: A TRUE NARRATIVE OF THE SUFFERINGS OF JOHN IRELAND AND WILLIAM DOYLEY, WHO WERE WRECKED IN THE SHIP CHARLES EATON, ON AN ISLAND IN THE SOUTH SEAS.

New Haven: S. Babcock, [1845]. - 64pp., including eight full-page illustrations in text. 16mo. Original tan pictorial wrappers. Covers worn and soiled, spine perished. Text moderately foxed. Last leaf torn slightly in gutter margin. Still, a good copy of this scarce work. Scarce narrative, published as part of Teller's Tales for children, relating the tale of two boys who survived the wreck of the Barque Charles Eaton and subsequent capture by natives in 1834. The Charles Eaton crashed on the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Australia. The castaways constructed two rafts out of the wreckage and began to float, finally coming ashore on the islands off the tip of York Peninsula, near present-day Queensland. Unfortunately, the natives were not friendly and murdered most of the refugees. Several young boys were traded to other, friendlier natives for a bunch of bananas, but the only two left alive by the time rescue arrived were the cabin boy, John Ireland, and the young son of one of the passengers, William Doyley. The work is illustrated with eight plates showing the natives in various scenes, such as murdering the castaways. "This 'True narrative.' published for juvenile readers is very rare" - Ferguson. Only a handful of copies on OCLC. FERGUSON 4078A.

Well-documented Porcelain Bowl from a Child?s Doll Dinner Service owned by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

n.p., n.d. "Porcelain bowl, 2.75? diameter, 0.75? high, 1.25? diameter base, transfer decorated pink rose borders, gilt highlights. Part of a child?s doll dinner service.Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, a medieval city famous for its porcelain. His family moved to Paris in 1845 when Renoir was four. His first home in Paris was an apartment near the Louvre museum. In 1854, at 13, Renoir accepted a position as an apprentice in the porcelain factory, Lévy frères, where he painted designs on china plates, cups, and vases. His skillful work earned a good income and the nickname Monsieur Rubens. In 1858, when automation of the porcelain factory made Renoir's position obsolete, Renoir tried other jobs including painting murals for cafes, religious hangings for missionaries, and decorations on fans. Renoir made frequent visits to the Louvre ?" near his apartment and the factory ?" studying the art of earlier French masters. At the age of 20, in 1861, he became a student at the art school of Charles Gleyre. In his book ?La Vie et l'Oeuvre de Pierre-Auguste Renoir,? his agent, Ambroise Vollard, describes seeing a miniature service in Renoir's dining room: ?I saw on the sideboard shelf of the dining room, a small coffee service and two candlesticks made out of porcelain, decorated by hand, well applied ... ?Those are the only pieces I still have from my old career as a porcelain decorator', Renoir told me.? This is also mentioned in ?Renoir in Time? by noted French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.This porcelain bowl was originally in the Pierre Auguste Renoir Personal Artifacts and Archives Collection consigned to Hantman?s in 2005 by Renoir?s grandson, Paul Renoir (1924-2005), son of his youngest child Claude (1901-1969). As part of his inheritance, Claude received Renoir?s home, Les Collettes, in Cagnes-asur-Mer in the south of France, which contained most of the personal property in this collection."

Fig. 4, Tab. VII, Fig. 3, 5, 7 und 8f und Tab. VIII. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Blacks [sic] Fellows Grave, Cobram Creek, River Murray SA"

South Australia: circa, 1845. Original pen & ink and watercolour sketch, 148 x 203 mm.; small tear to margin, otherwise very good, laid down on a leaf from an album, titled in ink bottom left, framed. A skilfully rendered watercolour of a scene of the Murray River from the mid-nineteenth-century.This evocative image records an encounter, by an early traveller along the Murray, of an Aboriginal grave marker. One of the earliest pioneers along this river, Thomas Mitchell, reported very frequent meetings with local tribes along the Murray and, thanks to his Aboriginal translator Piper, gave numerous interpretations of local customs he found of interest. This scene of a shallow creek which feeds into the Murray at Cobram, shows a four-posted Aboriginal grave marker with a canopy of leaves shading the burial site. What appears to be a dog - maybe a dingo - stands on its hind legs to inspect the grave, whilst birds circle overhead.Cobram, which lies on the Murray River north of Shepparton in northern Victoria, was the name of a pastoral station taken up by Octavius Phillpotts in 1845. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "head", and that Cobram was the head pastoral station in the district. Cobram is now a rural township.

. Berlin 26. XII.1845. 2 1/2 Seiten 4°..
