Well-documented Porcelain Bowl from a Child?s Doll Dinner Service owned by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

n.p., n.d. "Porcelain bowl, 2.75? diameter, 0.75? high, 1.25? diameter base, transfer decorated pink rose borders, gilt highlights. Part of a child?s doll dinner service.Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, a medieval city famous for its porcelain. His family moved to Paris in 1845 when Renoir was four. His first home in Paris was an apartment near the Louvre museum. In 1854, at 13, Renoir accepted a position as an apprentice in the porcelain factory, Lévy frères, where he painted designs on china plates, cups, and vases. His skillful work earned a good income and the nickname Monsieur Rubens. In 1858, when automation of the porcelain factory made Renoir's position obsolete, Renoir tried other jobs including painting murals for cafes, religious hangings for missionaries, and decorations on fans. Renoir made frequent visits to the Louvre ?" near his apartment and the factory ?" studying the art of earlier French masters. At the age of 20, in 1861, he became a student at the art school of Charles Gleyre. In his book ?La Vie et l'Oeuvre de Pierre-Auguste Renoir,? his agent, Ambroise Vollard, describes seeing a miniature service in Renoir's dining room: ?I saw on the sideboard shelf of the dining room, a small coffee service and two candlesticks made out of porcelain, decorated by hand, well applied ... ?Those are the only pieces I still have from my old career as a porcelain decorator', Renoir told me.? This is also mentioned in ?Renoir in Time? by noted French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.This porcelain bowl was originally in the Pierre Auguste Renoir Personal Artifacts and Archives Collection consigned to Hantman?s in 2005 by Renoir?s grandson, Paul Renoir (1924-2005), son of his youngest child Claude (1901-1969). As part of his inheritance, Claude received Renoir?s home, Les Collettes, in Cagnes-asur-Mer in the south of France, which contained most of the personal property in this collection."

Fig. 4, Tab. VII, Fig. 3, 5, 7 und 8f und Tab. VIII. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Blacks [sic] Fellows Grave, Cobram Creek, River Murray SA"

South Australia: circa, 1845. Original pen & ink and watercolour sketch, 148 x 203 mm.; small tear to margin, otherwise very good, laid down on a leaf from an album, titled in ink bottom left, framed. A skilfully rendered watercolour of a scene of the Murray River from the mid-nineteenth-century.This evocative image records an encounter, by an early traveller along the Murray, of an Aboriginal grave marker. One of the earliest pioneers along this river, Thomas Mitchell, reported very frequent meetings with local tribes along the Murray and, thanks to his Aboriginal translator Piper, gave numerous interpretations of local customs he found of interest. This scene of a shallow creek which feeds into the Murray at Cobram, shows a four-posted Aboriginal grave marker with a canopy of leaves shading the burial site. What appears to be a dog - maybe a dingo - stands on its hind legs to inspect the grave, whilst birds circle overhead.Cobram, which lies on the Murray River north of Shepparton in northern Victoria, was the name of a pastoral station taken up by Octavius Phillpotts in 1845. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "head", and that Cobram was the head pastoral station in the district. Cobram is now a rural township.

ALS - Eigenhändiger Brief mit Unterschrift.

. Berlin 26. XII.1845. 2 1/2 Seiten 4°..

        Vermischte Schriften botanischen Inhalts.

Tübingen, L.F. Fues, 1845. 4to (262 x 215mm). pp. viii, 442, with 13 (5 partly coloured) lithographed plates drawn by the author. Contemporary marbled boards. First edition. Hugo von Mohl (1805-1872) was one of the most prominent German botanists of the 19th century known for his oustanding research on plant physiology and plant anatomy. The present rare work consists of 31 papers originally published elsewhere, sometimes revised and augmented. "In 1832 he was appointed professor of physiology at Bern and in 1835 professor of botany at Tüblingen, a chair he occupied until his death. Molh's scientific work deals with extremely diverse areas of botany. Among them he devoted himself to the technical problems of the microscope that he was able to construct... After a century Mohl remains famous for his works on the microscopic anatomy of plants and for his contributions to knowledge of the plant cell" (DSB). In recent years von Mohl's theory has received remarkable confirmation from the results of X-ray studies on cell walls. Stamp on title.//Stafleu & Cowan 6187.

        Kosmos. Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung.

Stuttgart & Tübingen, J.G. Cotta, 1845-1858. 4 text volumes (of 5) & atlas. 8vo (210 x 130mm; text vols). & Oblong-folio (280 x 340mm; atlas). pp. xvi, 494; pp. (2), 544; pp. iv, 644, (2); pp. (2), 649, (1); (atlas:) pp (4), 136, with 42 (39 handcoloured) lithographed and engraved plates and maps. Publisher's cloth, gilt lettered spines (text) and contemporary half calf, rubbed (atlas). The scarce first edition, without the almost always lacking later published volume V. The atlas in the original edition (edited by T. Bromme). The immense work is generally considered as the greatest one-man achievement in the history of science. "It had been Humboldt's aim to give a scientifically accurate picture of the universe ... Since he saw nature as a whole and man as a part of nature, and therefore all intellectual and artistic activities as having a share in natural history, he linked his main theme to an exposition of its development through the centuries and to the history of old landscape painting and descriptive poetry of nature. He planned the book for fifty years ... The outlines of mid-nineteenth century views of the universe, as Humboldt called it, the picture of nature, presented in the first volume of Cosmos, is filled in detail in the third and fourth, the astronomical section in the former and the geophysical in the latter" (Kellner). "Alexander von Humboldt produced in his 'Cosmos' one of the last really comprehensive physical surveys ever to be attempted" (Printing and the Mind of Man 320). The not present volume V contains apart from an index of over 1000 pages, corrections and addenda, edited from the author's papers by Buschmann. Plate 6 in two states (not counted in the plate total) as is often the case.//Printing and the Mind of Man 320.

        Approach to Mount Sinai

Moon, F.G., London 1845 - The Prints of David Roberts:Part 1 - The PrinterLouis Haghe (1806-1885) was one of the msot skillful exponents of the tinted lithograph who became a leading reproductive lithographer in England and on the Continent. Haghe's reputation as a lithographer was primarily based upon topographical views, of which Twyman notes "his most important work of this kind, the translation of Roberts' sketches of the Holy Land, represents the culmination of his art".Part 2 - The Publication of Roberts' Holy Land and EgyptRoberts first sketched in his journals "on the spot" the vaious subjects which, on returning to London, he transcribed into finished paintings and watercolors. These then formed the basis of the lithographs drawn and printed by Louis Haghe. It is interesting to note that in some instances Roberts' original drawings were twice or three times the size of the published print, which indicated the skill of Haghe and his assistants in transferring Roberts' designs onto lithographic stones.Part 3 - A Genesis of Roberts' PrintsDavid Roberts fulfilled a boyhood dream by visiting the East and recording what he saw there; by August 1838 he had resolved to "visit the Holy Land, and make drawings of the scenes of sacred history and the antiquities of Egypt". By this time Roberts had already established himself as a successful topographical artist and published his set of Spanish scenery as tinted lithographs, Picturesque Sketches in Spain, 1837. Eventually he would be elected to the prestigious Royal Academy on the strength of his topographical paintings.Part 4 - The PlatesRoberts' Holy Land and Egypt project has been called "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographic plates" (according to Micheal Twyman). Its production involved over 600 lithographic stones used over an eight to nine year period. It is generally agreed the lithographers Day & Haghe were the most efficient for such large scale work, while Louis Haghe himself was a master lithographer. The plate formats strongly influenced their presentation as prints: large full-page and small half-page vignettes representing what Roberts intended to be the difference between finished drawings and sketches. roberts was a good judge of accurate transposition of his watercolors and sketches into lithography.Today historians regard Roberts' Holy Land and Egypt as the last link between the established artist and topographical lithography. Since Roberts' prints were the most costly publishing venture in Britain at the time, undertaken by a publisher "on his own responsibility", Roberts sighed on its completion: " . thank God . that with being blessed with health and backed by my ever esteemed friend Louis Haghe I may also say the most satisfactory."References:Micheal Twyman, Lithography, 1800-1850, London, 1970Katherine Sim, David Roberts, London 1984J.R.         ou descriptions des plantes les plus rares et les plus méritantes ... Rédigé par C. Lemaire e.a.

Gand, van Houtte, 1845-1880. 23 volumes. Royal-8vo (240 x 155mm). With over 2500, nearly all coloured plates. Contemporary brown half calf, spines with gilt lines and lettering (one volume not uniformly bound), some bindings a bit worn. A rare set, with all the plates, of this very fine illustrated work. The "Establishment Louis van Houtte" has been the largest nursery in existence not only in Belgium, but on the whole continent. It was famous for its splendid catalogues, issued by its own printing department. This beautiful periodical, appearing monthly for almost 40 years, was illustrated with chromolithographs, designed, printed and sometimes "rebouché au pinceau" in the large printing office situated in the middle of van Houtte's gardens. The man behind this enterprice, Louis van Houtte, ran the firm for about fifty years; after his death the business soon collapsed. In the relatively short time of about half a century in which colour printing from stone dominated the scene of botanical illustration (1800-1850) the Belgian lithographers reached the ultimate of craftmanship. The names of Severeyns, Stroobant and de Pannemaeker are justly famous. Stroobant was the printer of many of the illustrations of the first 10 volumes, he created his own establishment later on; de Pannemaeker painted and colourprinted more than three thousand flower- and fruit-illustrations for many periodicals and books, and was a landscape painter of some renown. He learned the trade under Stroobant's guidance and refined in several steps the process of chromolithography. The illustrations of the "Flore des Serres" depict flowers and plants for sale in the van Houtte's nursery; exotic plants figure extensively. /There are 2481 numbered plates and some extra, mostly plain plates, without a number. The double-page plates have 2 numbers and some of the very large folding plates have 4 numbers, sothat the actual number of plates is less than 2500. Volume 19 does not have the general title.//Famous botanists contributed like Alex Bivort, Ad. Brongiart, Alph. de Candolle, J. Linden; E.A. Carrière, J. Decaisne, H.G. Reichenbach, J.E. Planchon, P.E. de Puydt, Herm. Wendland, H. Witte and Louis van Houtte. ///Nissen BBI, 2254; Sitwell & Blunt p. 84; Stafleu & Cowan 15.921.

Gegen Bruno Bauer & Consorten. Octavo (196 × 123 mm). Contemporary marbled boards, hand-written paper spine label. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Contemporary ownership inscription to free endpaper. Corners slightly worn. Occasional light spotting. A very good copy. Rare first edition of Marx's first published book, written when he was only 26. It is also the first book written in collaboration with Engels. In 1844, the first year of their friendship, Marx and Engels decided to write a critique of their former associates of the Young Hegelian school, whose views were still very popular in academic circles. Taking Critique of Critical Criticism as a working title, they agreed to co-author the foreword, and divided up the other sections between them. 'Engels dashed off his portion of twenty pages while still at the flat in the Rue Vanneau [in Paris], and then returned home to the Rhineland. He was "not a little surprised", several months later, to hear that the pamphlet was now … more than 300 pages and had been renamed The Holy Family' [a sarcastic reference (suggested, in fact, by their publisher) to the Bauer brothers and their supporters]. "If you have retained my name on the title page it will look rather odd," he pointed out. "I contributed practically nothing to it"' (Wheen, p. 85); ironically, it is Engels' name which comes first on the title. 'Considered as the production of young men, the book is a remarkable piece of critical work, alike by reason of its brilliant style and the great learning it displays … The importance of the work for us lies in the evidence it affords of the development of the theory of historical materialism in the mind of Marx. In place of the brief and almost vague hints which appeared in the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher articles, there is a more positive and emphatic tone' (Spargo, p. 75f). One later critic stated that the work 'contained some of the most brilliant revelations of its authors' genius, and that in the mastery of its form and the iron compactness of its language it belonged amongst the finest things Marx had ever written' (quoted by Mehring).

        An original design for porcelain

[Paris 1845 - Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some light soiling. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience." ( Grove Dictionary of Art ).
