Well-documented Porcelain Soup Plate from a Child?s Doll Dinner Service owned by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

n.p., n.d. Porcelain soup plate, 3? diameter, 1.5? diameter base, transfer decorated pink rose borders, gilt highlights. Part of a child?s doll dinner service.Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, a medieval city famous for its porcelain. His family moved to Paris in 1845 when Renoir was four. His first home in Paris was an apartment near the Louvre museum. In 1854, at 13, Renoir accepted a position as an apprentice in the porcelain factory, Lévy frères, where he painted designs on china plates, cups, and vases. His skillful work earned a good income and the nickname Monsieur Rubens. In 1858, when automation of the porcelain factory made Renoir's position obsolete, Renoir tried other jobs including painting murals for cafes, religious hangings for missionaries, and decorations on fans. Renoir made frequent visits to the Louvre ?" near his apartment and the factory ?" studying the art of earlier French masters. At the age of 20, in 1861, he became a student at the art school of Charles Gleyre. In his book ?La Vie et l'Oeuvre de Pierre-Auguste Renoir,? his agent, Ambroise Vollard, describes seeing a miniature service in Renoir's dining room: ?I saw on the sideboard shelf of the dining room, a small coffee service and two candlesticks made out of porcelain, decorated by hand, well applied ... ?Those are the only pieces I still have from my old career as a porcelain decorator', Renoir told me.? This is also mentioned in ?Renoir in Time? by noted French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.This porcelain soup plate was originally in the Pierre Auguste Renoir Personal Artifacts and Archives Collection consigned to Hantman?s in 2005 by Renoir?s grandson, Paul Renoir (1924-2005), son of his youngest child Claude (1901-1969). As part of his inheritance, Claude received Renoir?s home, Les Collettes, in Cagnes-asur-Mer in the south of France, which contained most of the personal property in this collection

GOUDY'S ILLINOIS FARMER'S ALMANAC AND REPOSITORY OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE YEAR 1846.

Published and Sold by E.T. Goudy, [1845], Springfield: - 40pp. Stitched, untrimmed, a bit of foxing to the title page. Very Good. "Useful Recipes" for coughs, nose bleeds, burns and scalds, and "hooks in horses" are printed; also, times of holding Circuit Courts in Illinois, with lists of presiding judges by circuit. Eight pages of Goudy's list of "cheap books published by Grigg & Elliott" are printed. The almanac ends with twelve pages of advertisements, some illustrated, for more than twenty local merchants, providing an enjoyable insight into contemporary Springfield commercial activity. This is evidently the only copy with both Goudy's list and the merchants' advertisements. The AAS and Drake copies contain only 24 pages. Byrd, who recorded 32 pages, observes: "Pages [26]-[32] contain advertisements of books published by Griggs & Elliot, Philadelphia. MWA copy has [24] pages and lacks Griggs and Elliot advertisement."         Indian Melodies [Music]

New York: Published by G. Lane & C.B. Tippett, For the Methodist Episcopal Church, 200 Mulberry Street, James Collord, Printer, 1845. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. FIRST BOOK OF MUSIC BY A NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN24cm x 15.5cm (9.5 x 6 inches) , vi, [7]-114, [2] p., oblong original roan backed printed paper covered boards with title-page repeated in a frame, some contemporary inked scribbling on title-page with upper right corner broken away (about 3 cm., no loss of text), 2 text leaves with fore-edges clipped just touching text with slight loss to the end of the staves but no loss of notation, spine chipped, boards soiled and a bit chipped,. Fair condition. (Music). "As the tunes in this book are the work of an Indian, it has been thought proper by the author to have it all of a piece. The tunes therefore will be found to assume the names of noted Indian chiefs, Indian females, Indian names of places, &c. This has been done merely as a tribute of respect to the memory of some tribes ... "--p. vi "The one hymn that had an explicit historic tribal affiliation, however, was simply titled "Old Indian Hymn." It contained a legend that required some unpacking by Commuck. The Narragansetts, as Commuck explained in a footnote, "have a tradition that the following tune was heard in the air by them, and other tribes bordering on the Atlantic coast, many years before the arrival of whites in America." When the Narragansetts went to visit the recently arrived English colonists at Plymouth in 1620, they were shocked to hear the same tune sung during the course of the English church service. The tune was preserved among the Narragansetts "to this day," Commuck reported, and so merited inclusion in his book. The implicit moral of the hymn was that Natives, too, had received independent revelation regarding God that Euroamerican Christianity could only supplement, not supplant." quoted from The Indian Great Awakening: Religion and the Shaping of Native Cultures By Linford D. Fisher.Scarce, in any condition, of an important (considered the first book of music by a North American Native) the author being a Narragansett who had converted to Methodism some years earlier. This is a compilation of his original songs, set to Native melodies, and have as titles the names of the various Native Tribes from which the music is taken. Among them, a member of Tribes have known to have inhabited Canada - the Hurons, Iroquois (indeed all of the Six Nations), Algonquin, Mohawk, Chippeway, Ottawa, etc. The harmonies for the music were done by Thomas Hastings, a composer whose name will always be remembered for the immortal hymn, "Rock of Ages," among many others.Sabin 14999.

T. Bowen; text volume with 5 lithographic plates. Provenance: 'W Coll 9119 [-9121]' (shelfmarks on endpapers); 'XBCA AU2' (shelfmarks at foot of atlas volumes). The titles and contents leaves creased and spotted, volume 1 title with a short marginal tear, volume 2 title with small losses in the top margin, plates 41, 56 and 101 evenly browned, plate 51 with shallow crease, plate 81 with small area of marginal soiling, a few short marginal tears, the margins lightly yellowed and with occasional light spotting, this a little more pronounced in volume 1; text volumes with margins lightly yellowed and occasional minor spotting, text volume 2 without half title and final blank, and text volume 3 without final blank. Neat restoration to joints and extremities, an excellent set with fine clean plates. First edition of Audubon's magnificent final work, with brilliantly coloured plates. One of the very few great colour plate books on animals. Born in Santo Domingo (now Haiti) in 1785, as the son of a French sea captain and a French chambermaid, Audubon arrived in America in 1803 and settled near Philadelphia. In 1820, facing bankruptcy as a result of several failed business ventures, Audubon decided to pursue his lifelong interest in natural history and initially devoted his time to producing a complete record of American birds. He travelled for the next four years along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in search of species that may not have been included in the work of Alexander Wilson. The result of this endeavour was the famous The Birds of America. This was published in very large format (so-called double-elephant folio) between 1827 and 1838. In the early 1840s at the same time Audubon was producing the commercially successful octavo edition of his masterpiece, The Birds of America, he and his sons also began production of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, an elephant folio of 150 lithographs meant to match the lavishness of the Birds. Unlike the double-elephant folio Birds, the Quadrupeds was produced entirely in the United States, making it the "largest single color plate book to be carried to a successful conclusion during the century [in this country]" (Reese). It took the Audubon family five years to publish the 150 plates and there were at that time three hundred subscribers. The book was the product of Audubon's collaboration with John Bachman, a pastor who had studied quadrupeds since he was a young man and who was recognized as an authority on the subject in the United States. This was a most ambitious project to be undertaken by a man of Audubon's age (he was fifty-seven when he started work on it). Many of the species were little known or poorly documented, and it would involve Audubon to seek out many species himself. In 1843 Audubon led a small party on an exploration to the Rockies to gather material. They never reached the Rockies but returned home with enough specimens pickled in rum to enable Bachman to proceed with the text. By 1848 the last of the plates appeared, but the project had exhausted Audubon. After 1846 his eyesight was poor and his mind was wandering and it fell to his two sons to complete the project. Audubon was only to live another three years. "These final prints specifically document the senior Audubon's fascination with the disappearing 'frontier'. Sombre images, such as the Entrapped Otter canvas which foregrounds an otter's paw caught in the vice of a large, jagged metal trap, clearly evidenced the artist's growing concern for the survival of many natural species in the face of vast human encroachment." (Milwaukee Art Museum).

An original design for a porcelain plate

[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and mild foxing. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience." An die Pianistin Florence May (1845-1923): "Although the letter that reached you was written for Miss Cheyne, it applies perfectly to your case! She is in the same predicament; she has just arrived at Berlin and stays at Mrs Richter's, 33, Karlsbad, Berlin [...] I had expected Miss Cheyne, and as she did not come on the 25th, according to our agreement, (she entered our School), I thought your note was the explanation and hastened to write. I am sorry to tell you that my friend Kiel has had a very serious relapse of a severe illness, and if he will be able to teach at all this summer seems to me very doubtful [...] I think, even if you intend to take lessons with Kiel later on, Mr. Franz Schulz's teaching would be a capital preparation; he was a favorite pupil of Kiel, and is a capital musician, and particularly talented for teaching [...]". - Beide Bll. mit größerem horizontalen Einriß im Mittelfalz, aber noch zusammenhängend; mit kleineren Randläsuren und etwas unfrisch.

        Le Marchand d'Images [The Printseller]

Paris: Lemercier, 1845. Lithograph by Jacot after a painting by Guillemin. Printed on wove paper with thick wove backing for support. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, mild rippling and a few minor foxing marks in the margins. This charming print represents a print seller attempting to sell his wares to a middle-class couple in a domestic interior. Most likely having spotted the only print in the sparsely furnished room, a faded religious subject hung over the armoire, the vendor selects a small image of the Madonna and Child from his portfolio, which he thinks might interest his potential clients. During the nineteenth century, prints were extremely popular among members of the middle-class. They were an inexpensive and consequently affordable way for people to own reproductions of works of art. Lithographs, which were invented in the late eighteenth-century, were particularly popular. Produced through a relatively easy process, they were the ideal medium through which images could be widely disseminated. Lemercier was one of the most prominent printers and publishers of lithographs in nineteenth-century Paris.

        Indian Melodies [Music]
