Emerson, R. W. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
James Munroe and Company, Boston 1844 - 1st edition, with "Second Thousand" on the front wrapper. A Very Good copy. 8vo., 34 pp. In tan printed wrappers. The wrappers have a small chip at the spine's crown, on the front and rear wrapper. Sun line visible on the front and rear wrap. A Very Good copy. *** Emerson's scathing condemnation of the American Slave Trade and institution. In keeping with his social views emphasizing the advance of human progress, Emerson locates his discussion of race slavery within the "history of mankind interests us only as it exhibits a steady gain in truth and right¿" With language that is by turns ironic and incensed, he discusses features of slavery -deprivation, disenfranchisement, ruin of families - that contradict such a social advance. Emerson enumerates the horrors of slavery and writes "the blood is anti-slavery: it runs cold in the veins: the stomach rises with disgust, and curses slavery." Progress, he argues, arrives through witness reports of these sights and ensuing political action. *** [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

"In 1794, Robert Thorne had purchased the foundry of Thomas Cottrell, a former employee of William Caslon. It had originally been founded in 1757 when Cottrell and Joseph Jackson were fired in a wage dispute. Upon Thorne's death in 1820 the foundry was purchased at auction by William Thorowgood using money he had won in a lottery. Though he was never involved in the type founding business before this, Thorowgood made the foundry initially successful by publicizing Thorne's typefaces. Many of the types identified as Thorowgood's are actually the designs of Robert Thorne. One of the typefaces for which Thorowgood is credited is "Thorowgood." It is a distinctly fat style typeface and gets a lot of its inspiration from slab serif typefaces and sans serif typefaces. These fat typefaces were said to have changed the entire poster industry for the time period. Thorowgood was also the first person to invent a sans-serif typeface using lowercase letters. Thorowgood went on to issue new specimens and added more typefaces including Frakturs, Greeks, and Russian types which he obtained from the Breitkopf and Härtel foundry of Leipzig, Germany. Dumas, Alexandre
Paris: Baudry, 1844. 8 vols. in 4. 1st edition (in French), the authentic authorized Paris 1st printing. Scarce (OCLC lists 7 sets). A daily serialization in the newspaper Le Siècle (The Century) precedes, as do some of the multi-volume serializations by the Brussels pirates. Half French morocco, light foxing to first and last few pages, else fine, tall, wide, and complete (8 volumes, 8 half-titles, 8 contents leaves), unmarked internally by pen, pencil or stamp, and unworn externally. A superior copy of the most famous historical romance in the history of literature. If Le Chevalier D'Harmental (1842) is Dumas' first great historical novel (and it is), then Mousquetaires is the one that is most universally applauded as his best, despite La Reine Margot (1845) being equal in plotline and characters, and finer in style. Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1845) is also Mousquetaires' equal from every aspect, but it is the odd Dumas novel that is not, strictly, historical romance. Near fine.

Smith, Rev. George.
New York, Harper & Brothers, 1847, 1844. Two volumes. Crown quarto. Paginated consecutively. Pp. xvi, 3-240; 241-467. Plus a folding map engraved on steel, engraved frontispiece and 11 other plates. Title-page printed in red and black. Uniformly in the original illustrated wrappers, these edge worn and chipped, back wrapper of one volume loose, some dog-eared corners. Both volumes placed in a handsome custom made box, full green cloth over boards, facsimile title-page laid-down on cover. An unsophisticated set, untrimmed, preserved entirely in the original state, bright interiors, thoroughly free of foxing. ~ First American edition in the extremely rare original, two paperbound installments. Sold separately, each volume's cover bears the header: "50 Cents. Complete in Two Parts"; and "Part 1" and "Part 2", respectively. A pioneering work by the Anglican missionary George Smith (1815-1871) who, after the Treaty of Nanking, explored the newly opened cities of China, recording his findings and observations. The work is particularly appealing for its description and portrayal of everyday life in nineteenth-century China and the impact of the new British Rule. It includes an account of Hong Kong. [OSSOLI] FULLER ], S[arah] M[argaret]
Boston: Charles Little and James Brown, NY: Francis, 1844. First Edition. 8vo. [4],256 pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth, rebacked with most of the original spine laid down (affecting the "S" in "Summer", few stains to the title page, and a couple of other ones as well, some foxed. gilt-stamped spine title, sides blocked in blind, faded pink endpapers Myerson A4.1. 1; BAL 6492, binding A ; NAW 1, p. 680); Howes O135. Myerson calls the issue without the plates, the first issue, while Blanck notes: "As to whether or not the book was first issued with illustrations is still a question ... a rebound copy in Harvard, inscribed by early owner June, 1844 has the illustrations." Rare, not in ABPC for the last 25 years. Not in Graff. This copy has been "signed" twice by Fuller with a "signed" poem by E. A. Poe on the rear endpaper. These "signatures" are probably in the hand of noted forger Joseph Cosey, with an article by Cosey laid in. This is a very good tight copy. This is Fuller's first original book, following several translations; it recounts a journey taken with James Freeman Clarke and his sister, Sarah, through the northern Middle West in 1843. Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) influenced the thinking of her contemporaries and "crystallized the Transcendental movement" (NAW, I). For two years she edited the movement's journal, The Dial, publishing in its July, 1843 issue her essay, "Man vs. Men. Woman vs. Women". A year and a half later, she expanded the essay as Woman in the Ninteenth Century, called "her literary masterpiece." "It quickly took its place as a classic … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Buschmann, Max Frh. v., Oberinspektor der öst. Eisenbahnen (1845-1917).
1844. Verschiedene Formate.
