[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Salonger i fil. Interiör från Länsresidenset i Östersund.

Akvarell. Signerad: "H.

[New Fairy Tales. Complete with all five collections in two volumes, all in first issue, also the first, which contains "The Ugly Duckling"]

Kjøbenhavn, 1844 - 48. Bound together in one contemporary half calf with richly gilt spine. Occasional light brownspotting, but overall a lovely copy. The present collection contains the joint title-page for vol. 1 (dated 1845), the contents leaf for vol. 1 (for all three collections), the joint title-page for vol. 2 (dated 1848), and the contents leaf for vol. 2 (for both collections)Vol. 1, collection 1 also contains: the rare first state title-page (with no mention of neither volume nor collection, dated 1844), dedication leaf, and all the separate half-titles for each individual fairy tale. Vol. 1, collection 2 contains: Joint title-page, dedication leaf, and all the separate half-titles for each individual fairy tale. Vol. 1, collection 3 contains: Joint title-page, dedication leaf, and all the separate half-titles for each individual fairy tale. Vol. 2, collection 1 contains: Title-page, dedication leaf, and all the separate half-titles for each individual fairy tale. Vol. 2, collection 2 contains: Title-page, and all the separate half-titles for each individual fairy tale. All five collections were issued separately and all came with individual titles, half-titles, contents, and dedications. As they were also issued in the two volumes, title-pages for these volumes as well as joint contents for the entire volumes were then also issued. Thus, in all contemporarily bound copies of the fairy tales, many of these leaves for the individual collections were discarded when bound - e.g. it was redundant to have the separate contents leaves for the separate collections, when one had the joint contents leaf for each volume, which also goes for the extra half-titles. No two copies are alike in this regard and there is no talk of completeness - as long as the title-pages and one of the kinds of contents leaves are present, it is as it should be. ¶ First edition of Hans Christian Andersen's seminal second collection of fairy tales - the publication that caused him international fame - with all five collections in first issue, also the first, which is of the utmost rarity. It is in this legendary first collection that we find the first printing of "The Ugly Duckling" (not as is indicated in PMM in his first fairy tale collection, which does not contain his most important fairy tales). The rarity of the first issue of volume 1, collection 1 is legendary. It was published on November 11th 1843 (dated 1844 on the title-page) in a very small number, probably due to the poor sales of Andersen's first fairy tale collection. Against all belief, this first collection sold out within a few days, catapulting Andersen into worldwide fame, and a second issue was published already on December 21st 1843. Thus, only very few copies of the first issue exist, and almost all collections of the "New fairy Tales" are bound with the second issue or the third of 1847, meaning that they do not contain the actual first printing of "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Angel", and "The Sweethearts". Only the present two volumes of "Nye Eventyr" were issued, the first containing three collections, and the second containing two collections. This is thus a complete collection of the entire set in first editions, first issues. This seminal collection contains the first printings of Andersen's most famous and cherished fairy tales, e.g.: "The Ugly Duckling","The Angel", "The Nightingale", "The Pine Tree", "The Snow Queen", "The Shadow", "The Story of a Mother" etc. etc.It is interesting to note that the Hans Christian Andersen-entry in Printing and the Mind of Man is that of "Eventyr fortalte for Børn" ("Fairy Tales related for Children"), Andersen's first fairy tale collection, but that the PMM headline is "The Ugly Duckling", which actually first appears in the second fairy tale collection, which we have here. Thus, to be fair, the actual PMM entry ought to have been the second fairy tale collection. "Success at home was slow. "Fairy Tales related for Children", published in parts from 1835 at 4½d. apiece and collected in 1837, were regarded by the author himself as mere bagatelles thown off by a dubious kind of sleight of hand in the intervals of establishing himself as a greater poet than Oehlenschläger and a greater dramatist than Heiberg. To the end of his life he regarded them at best with tolerance and refused to admit that his international reputation rested on them. Most of the leading critics treated them contemptuously, regarding them as yet further evidence of the incapacity of an author of whom they had no great opinion in any case. Between 1838 and 1848 Andersen turned out several more volumes of tales, frequntly accepting books insted of money as payment... it was not until 1843/4 that the appearance of "The Ugly Duckling" swept him into general favour. H.C. Oersted the scientist (282) and Thorvaldsen the sculptor, were enthusiastic admirers of the tales, matinée readings of them were given at the Royal Theatre at Copenhagen; but is was their swiftly achieved success abroad that first brought them local notice..." (PMM 299).

Killy VII, 385f. - Kosch IX, 1334ff. - NDB XIV, 408f. Goedeke XI/1, 514, 64. - Sammlung Maassen 2671. Schnitte leicht angestaubt. Durchgehend gebräunt und etwas braunfleckig, einige Teile stärker. Gelegentlich untere Blattränder mit älterem, leicht bräunendem Wasserrand. Schön gebundenes Exemplar, insgesamt in gutem Zustand. - Selten, zumal in dieser guten Ausstattung. Sprache: Deutsch Gewi

Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands, visited during the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle. Together with some brief notices on the geology of Australia and the Cape of Good Hope. Being the second part of the Geology of the Voyage of the Beagle, under the command of Capt. Fitzroy, R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836.

London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1844 - Octavo. Original dark purple cloth rebacked with brown roan in the late 19th century, gilt titles to spine, ornamental blind-stamp to covers, mustard-coloured coated endpapers. Slight wear to extremities of binding, a couple of pale marks to front board, a few leaves just nicked at fore-edge. A very good copy, with the publisher's 24-page catalogue (dated January 1845). Folding map of Ascension Island lithographed by J. Walker after Lieut. Robert Campbell RN and 14 woodcuts in the text. First edition. This was the second of three "major geological works resulting from the voyage of the Beagle, and contains detailed geological descriptions of locations visited by Darwin. it provides valuable insights into one of the most important scientific voyages ever made" (Cambridge edition 2011). These three works were issued as separate volumes over five years — Coral Reefs (1842), Volcanic Islands (1844), and South America (1846) — however Darwin's intention was always to treat the geology of the Beagle in a single volume, so in 1851 the three parts were issued together, made up from unsold sheets and with a new title page. Freeman states that Volcanic Islands was published in November 1844; he notes the presence of "inserted advertisements Jan. 1844 in some copies" but not dated January 1845, as here. Although well represented institutionally, Volcanic Islands is in commerce decidedly uncommon, particularly in the original cloth. Freeman 272. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Le Juif Errant

First edition of Sue's The Wandering Jew. This is the rare first edition in book form, preceding the far more common illustrated and popular editions that soon followed. Sue's Le Juif Errant, a classic of French nineteenth-century popular fiction, was written at the height of the age of Balzac, Dumas, and Hugo. According to Sue's novel the Huguenot Rennepont family lost its wealth during the French Catholic persecution. What little remained was entrusted to the Jewish banker Samuel who, with his heirs, turned the money into a fortune over 150 years. The terms of the arrangement called for the descendants to meet at a certain address in Paris in 1832 to divide the inheritance. This book is the story of the seven remaining members of the family and the efforts of the Jesuits to eliminate them and claim the fortune for themselves. The old Jewish banker appears at the novel's end proclaiming an end to the curse of the Wandering Jew. "Eugene Sue wrote his Juif Errant in 1844. From the latter work ... most people derive their knowledge of the legend" (Jewish Encyclopedia). The medieval story of the Wandering Jew describes a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to his crucifixion, saying, "Go on more quickly." Jesus replied, "I go, but thou shalt wait till I return," thereby condemning the man to roam the earth until the Second Coming. Oral tradition, song, and popular literature perpetuated the long-lived anti-Semitic legend and described supposed sightings of the Wandering Jew. "Sue was, like Dumas, an improviser, and possessed remarkable fecundity and invention. To these qualities add the instinct for portraying the weird and the terrible, and it is not hard to understand why he was popular in his day, and retains a good share of that popularity still" (Warner). The first edition is rarely encountered in a contemporary binding complete with all half-titles. Only one set appears in the auction records of the past twenty-five years. Ten volumes in five. Complete with half-titles. Contemporary half calf. Light rubbing, some foxing. A very good, untouched set.

        Poems

A GREAT ELIZABETH BARRETT BARRETT PRESENTATION COPY. Turn of the century full navy morocco gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Original cloth bound in at the end. A near fine copy in a lovely binding. FIRST EDITION of the book that brought Barrett fame. Presentation copy, inscribed by Elizabeth Barrett, "To Miss Heard, with the author's regards, August 1844." In the early 1830s, during the period of her infatuation with the blind classicist Hugh Stuart Boyd, Elizabeth jealously railed against various "young ladies in the neighbourhood [who] seem to me in the habit of going to see that poor man." In an 1831 diary entry, Barrett singled out Miss Heard: "The society of that Miss Hurd [i.e. Heard] is as much valued as mine-as much! At least as much" (Forster, Elizabeth Barrett Browning: The Life and Loves of a Poet, pp. 56-57). Two of the poems in this volume were inspired by Boyd, whose first reaction was to deprecate the ABAB rhyme scheme of "Wine of Cyprus," which was addressed to Boyd. Browning wrote back to defend her rhymes, adding, "I hope Miss Heard received her copy." The book that made the author famous, the Poems of 1844 inspired Robert Browning to write his first letter to her in January 1845: "I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett ... into me it has gone, and part of me it has become, this great living poetry of yours ... I do, as I say, love these books with all my heart-and I love you too." Elizabeth told a friend the next day, "I had a letter from Browning the poet last night, which threw me into ecstasies." The two were secretly married the following year. This is a delightful presentation copy of Barrett's Poems, the book that brought her fame and inspired Browning to write to her.

The second smaller hand drawn plan measures 19 inches by 10 inches and shows the inclination of the proposed Churnet Valley railway line, this plan is on Afonwen Mill watermarked paper dated 1834, the plan has a tear on the right hand edge with no loss with some edge wear. The third item is a handwritten document titled "Churnet Valley Railway Branch to Stoke Reference" on Afonwen watermarked paper dated 1837, and contains a list of properties and lands along the proposed route of the line with the names of the owners, all of which seemed to be owned by the Duke of Sutherland. A very rare collection of three original primary source manuscript documents relating to the building of the Churnet Valley Railway

        American Coot

Birds of North America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories 1844 - Sheet Dimensions: 6 x 9 in. Frame Dimensions: 12.25 x 15.25 in. Hand-colored lithograph. A tireless entrepreneur, John James Audubon devoted himself to an unprecedented project, becoming the first to attempt the seemingly insurmountable task of documenting all the bird life of North America. This task grew out of a genuine and passionate interest in his subjects, and Audubon determined not only to complete a project that no one else had undertaken, but to approach it in an entirely innovative manner. His style and his persona were much like the notion of America itself: ambitious, animated, larger than life. The artist’s tireless efforts and remarkable talent culminated in the publication in London of his 435-plate Birds of America (1827-1838), undoubtedly the greatest work on birds ever produced. The celebration of this quintessentially American work, and the enterprising, talented artist who created it, has grown steadily since the time of its publication.

The legend states this map was based on the 1835 publication by an unidentified French cartographer. Australia is labelled both as "New Holland" and "Australia", with only New South Wales of the states labelled Carved by 竹口貞齋 [Takeguchi Teisai] and 杉田祐 [Sugita Yūsai].

Ink-stamped 'BOUND BY J. MACKENZIE' on front pastedown. [John Mackenzie (1788-ca 1850) is believed to have been an apprentice in Frederich Leberecht Staggemeier's London business in 11-12 Villers Street in the second decade of the nineteenth century. Mackenzie's independent business flourished in the second quarter of the century, during which time he held the office of bookbinder to both King George IV and King William IV. He is noted for his use of hard-grain morocco, such as those found in the Broxbourne and Grenville libraries, and here] Lower hinge split about 70mm from head; headbands loosening; extremities just a little rubbed; damp stain affecting some leaves (but not binding) lower margin from gutter about 50mm; else an excellent example of the Royal Binder's work. Inscription on recto flyleaf: 'To Marianne / from her father / W. Warrington(?) / March 18th 1844 " . 156 cream, blue and pink unumbered pages, not counting endpapers, of which 19pp have manuscript verse in copperplate, some dated 1847, and 29pp have tipped-in illustrations of little or no interest (mostly later than the above dates suggest). Bound by Marshall in contemporary green half calf, marbled sides, red morocco label to spine letterd gilt, blind lattice pattern to spine, marbled edges and endpapers. Spine slightly faded, some light wear to extremities, some foxing and oxidization to plates, overall an excellent copy, attractively bound. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page and 39 plates by "Phiz" (H. K. Browne). First edition, bound from the parts with stab-holes visible, and with the textual flaws noted by Smith. This copy has the £100 title plate, not transposed. The transposed plate is often suggested as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver long ago dismissed this, stating that "It is merely one of the five cases in Chuzzlewit of triplicated steels, one of them reading '100£' and the other two '£100'. all three of them in use during the issue in parts."         Poems.

London: Edward Moxon,, 1844. In two volumes. 2 volumes, octavo (170 × 104 mm).Bound c.1905 by John Grabau in dark blue morocco gilt, spines divided in six compartments by raised bands, gilt lettered in two, others with flower tools, dated at foot, sides with gilt panels with floral cornerpieces, turn-ins ruled in gilt, blue patterned endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut; original green cloth (Carter A) bound in at end. Housed in a custom blue morocco-backed solander box. Bookplates of Frank Henry Goodyear (1849–1907). A touch of rubbing to some extremities, free endpapers tanned at margins from turn-ins, an excellent copy in a fine binding. First edition, first issue, presentation copy, inscribed by the author of the collection that made Elizabeth Barrett's fame: "To Miss Heard, with the author's regards, August 1844". A superb association: Miss Heard was a friend and, in Browning's mind, a rival for the attentions of the blind classicist Hugh Stuart Boyd (1781–1848), to whom she was devoted in the earlier 1830s, very like Middlemarch's Dorothea to Casaubon. Browning confided to her diary her jealousy of all others who took up Boyd's time: "The society of that Miss Hurd [Heard] is as much valued as mine – as much! At least as much" (quoted in Forster, Elizabeth Barrett Browning: A Biography, p. 57). The collection includes two poems inspired by Boyd: "The Mournful Mother (of the Dead Blind)" and another specifically addressed to Boyd, "Wine of Cyprus". On publication Boyd's first reaction was to deprecate the tight ABAB rhyme scheme of the latter poem. Browning quickly wrote to him on 13 August 1844 to defend her "double rhymes", adding, perhaps tartly: "I hope Miss Heard received her copy..." After the death of his wife in 1834, Browning had continued to support Boyd, but "The Mournful Mother" suggests that she had transformed her early embarrassing infatuation into a safer, maternal concern for the blind scholar. In September 1846 she confided to Boyd, uniquely, her impending elopement with Robert Browning, who had initially been attracted to her by the verses in these volumes. The handsome binding was designed, executed and signed by John Grabau, a binder from 1902 to 1905 at Roycroft, and afterwards on his own account.

        Chinese Street in Macao

Macau 1844 - Watercolour, 370 x 274 mm; ink caption at centre below; original cropping marks and marginal annotations relating to subsequent publication; now in acid-free mount to original framing dimensions. An important original watercolour of Macau. This once formed part of a series of watercolours of the European enclaves on the South China coast in the mid-1840s. The series was described in full in the Hordern House catalogue Edward Ashworth, Artist & Architect (available online at www.hordern.com).Chinese Street in MacaoThis recently-discovered drawing appears very familiar, for the reason that it was one of the images to have been turned into a lithograph (Plate 5) for Ashworth's essay 'Chinese Architecture', first published in 1851 by the Architectural Publication Society. This explains the cropping marks and side instructions to the engraver and printer around its margins. The watercolour depicts a street of Chinese shops. Concerning the published version Ashworth writes rather brusquely in his essay of: 'A street in Macao, the Chinese part of the town. These shops are quite second rate. The foolish custom of constructing segment roofs to verandahs is here displayed to disadvantage'. Presumably he is referring to the roofs to the left, drainage - if left unprotected by an additional roof - being an obvious problem with their inward returns. If we are to believe the written evidence, it seems that Ashworth drew this scene more as a visual, moral lesson in bad design rather than for any painterly or romantic compulsion, though some ethnographic fascination with such an intimate Chinese setting must certainly have played a part.On this original drawing, at the lower right, Ashworth has scribbled in pencil: 'The effect of this is to be copie[d] with the colour of the other draw[ing]'. This could be a note to his lithographers Messrs. Day and Son, a reference to another street scene by Ashworth that would become Plate 4: 'Street Scene, Canton, near the Foreign Factories', since both exhibit an identical viewing angle and perspective. In addition, the eaves of the buildings along the Canton street display similar 'segment roofs' of the pattern Ashworth so despised in Macau.Edward AshworthEdward Ashworth was born near Exeter, Devon in 1814, and trained as an articled apprentice to Robert Cornish, architect to Exeter Cathedral. He then moved to London to work under another Exeter-born man, Charles Fowler, architect to the Duke of Bedford and a founder-member of the Institute of British Architects. Unhappy with the quality of his commissions, Ashworth decided to immigrate to New Zealand. Aged 28, he left England in May 1842 aboard the ship Tuscan, bound for Auckland. The trip included a brief stay in Melbourne, landing at Port Phillip in September 1842. Ashworth continued on to Auckland, arriving a month later in October. After failing to find work as an architect he accepted a position as tutor to the children of the first New Zealand Governor, William Hobson, recently deceased. Other tutoring posts soon came his way. During his two-year stay, Ashworth made numerous watercolours of Auckland and its street life including an expedition into the Waikato, now treasured views of the very first stages of colonial occupation. This was to become a habit, drawing and painting the landscapes and streetscapes of each place he visited. In 1843 he gave a lecture to the local Mechanics Institute on Greek architecture in which his drawings were widely admired for their 'exquisite' quality. By early 1844 he had decided to make his way back to England via a slow sojourn in China - presumably he had heard of the sudden flurry of building construction then underway in Hong Kong. Ashworth left Auckland in February 1844 arriving for the second time in Australia that same month, this time in Sydney, New South Wales. He spent three months in that city, again painting and drawing, before heading across to Hong Kong aboard the American ship Navigator by way of Bat [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Jane Loudon was a self-taught artist who became a very successful botanical artist. She invented a unique style where she depicts living flowers in the form of bouquets using bright colors; this style was quickly accepted by leading gardeners of the day. This unique artistic style was utilized in the production of the fine color plates illustrating her botanical works. Loudon also developed a unique writing style; she knew the horticultural books of the day were written in a technical and scientific style, so she adopted a more breezy style that made gardening a more accessible recreational activity especially for women. The botanical books she published became very successful and went through numerous editions. See also Nissen BBI 1253, 1237, 1235, 1233, 1236 and Great Flower Books (1990), p. 115.
