ANNEXATION, OR SPORT FOR GROWN CHILDREN [caption title]

[Np]: Seatsfield, del., [ca. 1844].. Lithograph, 13 x 15 3/4 inches. Lightly tanned. Pencil marks and tape remnants on verso. A couple small repaired edge tears. About very good. A rare American political print, satirizing the men in favor of annexing Texas to the United States in 1844. The image shows a group of men trailing two dogs, named "Santa Anna" and "J. Bull" who are chasing a third dog, named "Jonathan." That third dog is dragging a "Treaty Between the United States and Mexico" and pulling behind its tail a kettle marked "Texas." Among the men commenting on the scene are John Calhoun, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Martin Van Buren and a top hat wearing character representing England (i.e. "John Bull"). Jackson proclaims that "there's as much fun in this, as in scalping Indians" while Van Buren, crouching behind bushes, says "I have not my cue to speak yet, in the mean time I'll keep dark, and watch how the -- dog jumps." Polk, the Democratic nominee for President in 1844 and a strong advocate of annexation doffs his hat and says "Hurra! Well, if they don't elect me President for this, I'll never do another good-natured thing as long as I live." The John Bull character proclaims that he is undecided as to whether he to "jump over the fence and join the sport; or stay here and cry shame!" Not in Reilly's catalogue of political prints in the Library of Congress. OCLC locates only a single copy, at the American Antiquarian Society, and we also locate two copies at the Beinecke Library at Yale. WEITENKAMPF, p. 76. OCLC 191119742.

Whitefriars; Or, The Days Of Charles the second

An historical romance. In three volumes. [Epigraph and volume number] London: Henry Colburn, publisher, Great Marlborough-street, 1844. 3 Vols, post 8vo; half-titles not called for; pp.[iv]+323+[i (blank)]; [ii]+339+[i (blank)]; [ii]+334; Victorian quarter vellum, black lettering-pieces, bronze pebble-grain cloth sides; t.e.g., others uncut. Vellum darkened and foxed, and one lettering-piece lacking; poor quality paper showing some very light embrowning, and one blank upper margin with short tear; a very few scattered small marks or fox-spots; a very nice copy nonetheless. Emma Robinson’s first book, and a very scarce title indeed in the first printing, as here. Allowing for a label leaf, the book as here presented makes an exact number of sheets. Sadleir had to be content with a third printing (and a slightly differing collation), whilst Wolff did not find a copy at all; COPAC records copies only at the British Library, Oxford, the National Library of Scotland, and Glasgow. The title-page to volume one in this copy has the ‘m’ of ‘form’ lacking in the first line of the epigraph. It is present in the other volumes. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Ueber die chemische Zusammensetzung der Eiterzellen IN: Hoppe-Seyler (ed) Medicinsich-chemische Untersuchungen, Heft 4, 441-60

Discovery of DNAMiescher, Johann Friedrich (1844-95). Ueber die chemische Zusammensetzung der Eiterzellen. In Hoppe-Seyler, Felix, ed., Med.-chem. Untersuchungen (Berlin: Hirschwald, 1866-71), Heft 4: 441-60. 8vo. vi, 593pp. 3 lithographed plates. 210 x 141 mm. Cloth ca. 1871, title in gilt on spine. Booklabel of the Chemischen Institute der Universität Innsbruck, and their stamp and withdrawal stamp on title page. Fine copy.First Edition. One of the earliest significant contributions to the field that would eventually be called molecular biology. "Miescher's first and most important discovery was a new class of compounds rich in organic phosphorus and forming the major constituent of cell nuclei. He rightly concluded that these 'nucleins,' as he called them, were as important a center of metabolic activity as the proteins" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Miescher's "nuclein" (nucleoprotein) was later demonstrated to be the hereditary genetic material (DNA). He also was the first to suggest the existence of a genetic code. Miescher was the son of Johann Friedrich Miescher the elder, professor of pathological anatomy at the University of Bern; his uncle was Wilhelm His, Sr., professor of anatomy and physiology at the University of Basel and inventor of the microtome. After receiving his M.D. in 1868 Miescher began working under the physiological chemist Felix Hoppe-Seyler, who encouraged Miescher to study leucocytes (white blood cells). Miescher developed techniques for isolating the nuclei of these cells, and then subjected the purified nuclei to an alkaline extraction followed by acidification, resulting in a precipitate that Miescher called nuclein. Upon further analysis, Miescher was able to demonstrate the salt-like union of nuclein's two major components, an acid fraction and a basic fraction. He thus became the first to isolate and identify what we now know as DNA. Garrison-Morton 695.

Esemplare ben conservato.

Remains of the Temple of Jove Olympus. "Avanzi del Tempio di Giove Olympico

Greece: Rome Unknown. 1844. Copper engraving of the Olympieion, Temple of Olympian Zeus by Andrea Gasperini. Black & white; verso blank. Dedication to "Signor Alessandro Cipriani di Livorno, amatore e dislinto cultore di belle arti" with the artist's sincere friendship and gratiude. A rare engraving, as far as we can determine it was seperately issued, ie never bound as a book with the others of the series. The large view shows the temple from an unusual angle with the hill of Lycabettus behind, across open fields. There are no houses, but a few tents of those who have come to celebrate at the temple. In the foreground a group of women dance whist others look on, we see other groups dancing in the background. Good dark impression; some spotting within image; minor chips to edge of lower blank margin. Andrea Gasparini, produced a series of engravings of Monuments of Athens, all dedicated to Alessandro Cipriani of Livorno, little is known about the artist or why Sig. Cipriani was interested in the views. The engravings are interesting for what they show of life in Greece after the fall of the Ottomans; whilst showing the monuments they also show life in Athens as a Greek town. In a number of the views Gasparini shows festivals or celebrations taking place at the sites.; they also reveal how small the 'city' was . Athens was chosen as the Greek capital for historical and sentimental reasons, not because it was a large city: there are few buildings in Athens from the period of Byzantine Empire and the 18th century. At the time these views were published new buildings were being erected : the University of Athens (1837), the Royal Palace (now the Greek Parliament Building) (1843), the National Garden of Athens (1840), the National Library of Greece (1842) but it is clear from the views that Athens was a small town.at the time of their drawing.         Lady Julia Cornwallis Sheet Music Album

London.: Chappell, D'Almaine, Jullien, et al.. 1840s thru 1850s.. Three-quarter leather bound volume, 13 x 10 inches, containing more than two dozen individual pieces of sheet music dating from the 1840s and 1850s. The corners of the volume are bumped; there is a 1 inch loss at bottom of leather spine; text block firmly bound. A paste-down leather label on the marble-papered front cover of the book is inscribed in gold lettering with the owner's name: Lady Julia Cornwallis. The volume contains many attractive color-lithographed covers (likely augmented with hand-coloring); a good many of these stunning covers are the work of the prolific John Brandard and were printed by the renowned firm M. & N. Hanhart. Several of the covers reflect time-toning or modest staining, but the contents, overall, are in excellent condition. This is a fine collection of mid-nineteenth century music and the attendant lithographed cover art. The volume would make an excellent addition to a library with a British sheet music emphasis. The collection of British sheet music gathered by Lady Julia Cornwallis (2 July 1844 to 1 September 1883) is an especially fine assemblage of mid-nineteenth century popular music. The composer most frequently represented in the volume is Charles D'Albert with nine titles (including the Galop celebrating the clipper ship Schomberg, in 1855 the largest vessel ever built in the UK); other composers include Louis D'Egville, Louis Jullien (the Cricket Polka and the Chimes Quadrille, both referencing works by Charles Dickens), Camille Schubert, and all six of J. T. Stone's Assortimens Quadrilles Nationales—not often seen as a complete collection. Cover art by John Brandard is found on nine different titles. The album contains eleven full-color illustrated covers; one multi-color text only cover; two black and sepia-tone covers; three black and white pictorial covers; eleven black and white text-only covers (including the six J. T. Stone compositions). Several of the covers bear the signature of Lady Cornwallis and are dated 1858. A complete list of the sheet music in the album can be had by contacting oldimprints.com. .

Wild Horses taken from The North American Indian Portfolio

Printed by Day & Haghe, Lith. to the Queen, London., London and New York 1844 and 1845 - The North American Indian Portfolio George Catlin was the first artist to travel widely among the Plains Indians of North America and create an important body of paintings and graphics to illustrate their customs and artifacts. His purpose was both unselfish and romantic. He wanted, and labored unceasingly, to persuade his contemporaries that Native American culture should be honored and preserved. During the 1830's, Catlin gathered artifacts and turned his sketches and recollections of the prairie into paintings. These were shown in 'Catlin's Indian Gallery' which drew enormous crowds in Philadelphia, New York, Washington, Boston and, finally, London and the Continent. In 1844, Catlin issued 'The North American Indian Portfolio' to further publicize his cause. The lithographs ranged from portraits to tribal ceremonies, from the anecdotal to the idealized. Above all, his pictures emphasized 'the struggle for survival that was thought to shape the force and independence of savage character' (Tyler, 'Prints of the American West', p.31). Publication City: London and New York Medium: Hand-colored lithographs Dimensions: 16.5 x 23 inches (page size) Date: 1844 and 1845

The Interior of the Theatre of Herodes Atticus. " Interno del Theatro di Erode Attico o Bacco

Greece: Rome Unknown. 1844. Copper engraving of the Herodeion or Theatre of Herodes Atticus by Andrea Gasperini. The large view shows the interior of the Roman theatre built by Herodes Atticus in 174AD. Abandoned and grown over by vegetation; a place to bring cows to graze. In the foreground carved fragments of the building; in the background can be seen the monument of Phillpappos. Good dark impression; some spotting within image; tear to upper margin, repaired; lower right corner torn with loss of blank margib. Autograph poem 'Springer' ('The Knight'), signed and dated at Zurich, 1845, 2 pages 8vo (one small split at the end of a fold).

      - Six four-line stanzas. Having left Germany in 1844 because of political persecution, Freiligrath lived in Belgium, Switzerland and England, returning to Germany after the revolution of 1848. This poem, using the imagery of the pieces on a chess board, and with its defiant final line 'Only the King can be checkmated!') is typical of the outspoken verses which led in 1848 to his arrest and trial for sedition (he was however acquitted).

Original Double-Column Playbill featuring MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT

1844. London: Theatre Royal Lyceum, Thursday July 18th, [1844]. Approximately 20 by 20 inches unfolded (folded in half vertically). Original printed tissue-like paper. This was the first production, by the playwright Edward Stirling, of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT -- having opened on 8 July 1844 at the Lyceum in London (under the management of Mrs. Keeley) and running for "at least 105 performances" into the Spring of 1845. As Bolton (in his listing #1 for this Dickens title) notes,~This version had Dickens's permission. Mrs. Keeley managed the Lyceum, which she had rescued from being a circus house and "American Amphitheatre" in the previous year. The Keeleys asked Dickens for a preface, which he declined to provide though he offered to assist at rehearsals.~This is a very early playbill -- as it promotes the production of "this evening, Thursday July 18th" as well as the following two evenings -- just ten days after opening night. It is also a very large and comprehensive playbill -- double-size (folded down the middle), with MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT occupying the entire 10-inch by 20-inch left side. The middle of that side bears a lengthy listing of the players and their characters (under the title, which is written in rustic tree-branch capitals). The bottom third lists all of the scenes -- six in Act I, seven in Act II, and five in Act III.~The other side of the playbill, in addition to advertising "Aladdin; or the Wonderful Lamp" among other productions, proclaims that "On Friday Evening... Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess of Mechlenbergh Strelitz... will honour the Theatre with their presence." In 1844 the Duke of Cambridge was Adolphus (son of King George III and Charlotte of Mechlenbergh-Strelitz), and the Duchess was the former Princess Augusta of Hesse-Cassel; the Grand Duke of Mechlenbergh-Strelitz was George, and the Grand Duchess was the former Princess Friederike of Hesse-Darmstadt; the prior year had seen the marriage of the two couples' children, Princess Augusta of Cambridge and Friedrich Wilhelm of Mechlenbergh-Strelitz.~The playbill does have some edge-wear (and is partly separated along the vertical fold), plus there is one 2-3-inch tear at the bottom of the Chuzzlewit side (nothing missing though). We seldom see such large, delicate pieces of ephemera survive any better. (Note: July 18th was indeed a Thursday in 1844; it would not be so again until 1850.) Bolton Chuzzlewit #1.

VIEWS OF ANCIENT MONUMENTS IN CENTRAL AMERICA, CHIAPAS AND YUCATAN.

London: F. Catherwood, 1844. - [2],24pp. plus chromolithographed title by Owen Jones printed in red, blue, and gold; lithographic map printed in red and black; and twenty-five tinted lithographic plates after Catherwood. Folio. Publisher's half green morocco and moiré cloth boards, titled in gilt "Catherwood's Views / in Central America / Chiapas and Yucatan" at center of upper cover, titled in gilt on spine; yellow endpapers. Very good. "In the whole range of literature on the Maya there has never appeared a more magnificent work" - Von Hagen. This beautiful and rare plate book was printed in an edition of 300 copies. It is seldom found in presentable condition, and it is one of the first and primary visual records of the rediscovery of Mayan civilization. Until the publication of the work of Alfred Maudslay at the turn of the century, this was the greatest record of Mayan iconography. Frederick Catherwood was a British architect and artist with a strong interest in archaeology. These combined talents led him to accompany the American traveller and explorer, John Lloyd Stephens, on two trips to the Mayan region of southern Mexico in 1839 and 1841. These explorations resulted in Stephens' two famous works, INCIDENTS OF TRAVEL IN CENTRAL AMERICA, CHIAPAS, AND YUCATAN and INCIDENTS OF TRAVEL IN YUCATAN. These immensely popular works, foundation stones in Mayan studies, were both illustrated by Catherwood and inspired him to undertake the larger portfolio. Catherwood's VIEWS was produced in London, although issued with both London and New York titlepages. Catherwood recruited some of the most distinguished lithographers in London to translate his originals onto stone: Andrew Picken, Henry Warren, William Parrott, John C. Bourne, Thomas Shotter Boys, and George Belton Moore. The beautiful titlepage was executed by Owen Jones. Three hundred sets were produced, most of them tinted, as in the present copy (there is a colored issue on card stock, which is exceedingly rare). The views depict monuments and buildings at Copan, Palenque, Uxmal, Las Monjas, Chichen Itza, Tulum, and several scattered sights. The work of Stephens and Catherwood received great praise, but neither lived to enjoy it long. Stephens died in 1852 of malaria contracted in Colombia, and Catherwood went down on a steamship in the North Atlantic in 1854. "Catherwood belongs to a species, the artist- archaeologist, which is all but extinct. Piranesi was the most celebrated specimen and Catherwood his not unworthy successor" - Aldous Huxley. Not in Abbey. PALAU 50290. SABIN 11520. TOOLEY 133 (gives a lit of the plates). Von Hagen, SEARCH FOR THE MAYA, pp.320-24. GROCE & WALLACE, p.115. HILL 263 (ref).
