Daniel Rice & James B. Clark Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & James B. Clark, 1843. unbound. very good. Lithographic & Print Colouring Establishment. Portrait. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Page measures 20" x 14". Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". As Superintendent of the Indian Trade Bureau, Thomas McKenney wanted to document the rapidly disappearing culture of the American natives. He activated the project, sponsored by the War Department, by commissioning writer James Hall and Charles Bird King, a renowned American portraitist. King painted the prominent Indians while they visited Washington D.C. as treaty delegates. Most of the original oil paintings were destroyed by fire in the Smithsonian Museum in 1865. These lithographs, published 1842-58, are all that remain and are still hailed as one of the best visual records of influential Native Americans of the nineteenth century. Overall toning and wear. A few tears and chips to edges. Small stain in right margin. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

"The music of the bagpipes and the pungent aroma of the haggis pervaded Delmonico's [New York] large banquet hall last night on the occasion of the one hundred and thirty-fourth anniversary dinner of the St. Andrew's Society... At 7:30 o'clock Piper William Clelland[!], arrayed in full Highland costume, stuck up 'The Campbells are Comin' and led the members and their guests into the banqueting room. While the menu was being discussed an orchestra played Scotch music, and the central feature of the feast was reached when the piper escorted a procession of six waiters, each carrying aloft a genuine Scotch haggis. As the 'great chieftains,' or haggises, were borne up and down the aisles, the bagpiper discoursed the old tune 'Bannocks o' Barley,' the Scotsmen cheered until their throats were sore, and the guests of other nationalities enjoyed the scene... The usual formality of parading the haggis was observed amid great enthusiasm. Piper William Cleland led the procession as he has done for thirty-six years." The New York Times, December 6, 1890 & & Angus Mackay became piper to Queen Victoria in mid-1843, thus the manuscript reference to Mackay as piper to Lord Ward on the leaf inserted between pp. 81 and 82 serves to date the "Corrected and improved" edition of the unlocated tutor to the first half of 1843 or earlier. & & We would like to thank bagpipe historian Geoff Hore of Ruakaka, New Zealand for his kind assistance in the dating of this tutor. & & Material of this nature is very rare to the market.

A Christmas Carol. In prose. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas

London: Chapman & Hall,, 1843. With illustrations by John Leech. Small octavo. Original cinnamon vertically-ribbed cloth, covers stamped in blind with single line and decorative border of holly and ivy, front cover stamped in gilt with titling within wreath, spine with gilt ornament and lettering, green endpapers, gilt edges. Custom red morocco-backed folding case. Frontispiece and 3 plates by John Leech, all handcoloured as issued; 4 woodcut illustrations in the text. Cut to cloth on rear cover skilfully repaired, green endpapers a little rubbed as usual, early ownership inscription and modern book label on front pastedown, a very good copy. First edition, first issue, with red and blue title-page dated 1843, Stave I at the beginning of the text, green endpapers and with the gilt wreath on the front cover 15mm at the closest point from the blind-stamping on the left (the "single point" determining first issue, according to Todd). The production complications of the first, and by far the most enduring, of Dickens's Christmas books are often aired but not always understood. The current consensus is that copies of all three variant states of the first issue (red/green title dated 1844 with green endpapers; red/blue title dated 1843 with either yellow or green endpapers) were all available on publication day, 19 December 1843. Copies with green endpapers are scarcer than those with yellow.

- Garrison and Morton,2286, cita l?ediz. francese in 2 voll. del 1829-42: ?The fine illustrations of gross pathology make this, one the greatest works of its kind. Cruveilhier gave the first description of disseminated sclerosis. Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and ulceration of the stomach due to hyperacidity were also for the first time described in the above work?. 2 (qui in fotocopia).

Paris, Hachette, 1843. 8vo. Bound in a beautiful contemporary half calf binding with four raised bands and elegant gilding to spine. Fine, elegant super ex-libris to front board (Lycée Louis le Grand, Université de France), inside blindtamped border. A bit of occasional brownspotting. An excellent and very beautiful copy. (4), VIII, 448 pp. + one plate.. The rare first edition of the work in which the theory of probability is stated clearly and completely for the first time, making it of the utmost importance to mathematics, logic, philosophy, economics, and philosophy of science. The work "is important in the theory of probability, since it examines in an original way the interpretation and foundations of this calculus and its applications." (D.S.B. III:451). Cournot insists on a clear distinction between "objective possibility" and "subjective possibility", and to that he himself adds that which he calls "philosophical probability". "Of course, Cournot neither solved nor satisfactorily stated the problem of the logical foundation of the calculus of probability. But he had the distinction of having been the first to dissociate -in a radical way- various ideas that still were obscure, thus opening the way for deeper and more systematic research..." (D.S.B. III:451).Whereas Bernoulli was the first to actually formulate the theory of probability often called "the principle of moral certainty", Cournot, in the present work, is the first to suggest that it provides a bridge between the mathematics of probability and the real world. It is Cournot's theory of probability that Borel later develops further and calls "the only law of chance"
