[Dreams]
Philadelphia: W.W. Weeks, 1842. Good.. 86pp. 12mo. Stitched; wrappers presumed lacking. Lightly dampstained throughout, lightly worn. A fun and rare little volume, comprising an alphabetical listing of terms and their interpretations as to significance in one's dreams. For example, "Roast meat. To dream you eat roast meat, signifies that you are fallen into sin and gluttony"; "Kite. To dream of your seeing a kite showeth you shall be in danger of thieves and robbers"; and other such signs of positivity such as dreaming of eyebrows, eating broth, or frogs. The dream book is followed by a list of spells and charms, and the questionable science of fortune telling with cards -- herein referred to as "cardiology." A rare work in any edition, we find that this edition is unrecorded. A single copy of the 1840 edition at AAS; a single copy of the 1841 at the University of Delaware, and two copies of the 1843 edition in OCLC. All three recorded editions include a folding plate, which is presumed lacking here.

Darwin, Charles
1842. Sep. 29 [no year]. Two lines written in Darwin's hand in the third person "With Mr. Darwin's Compliments.". On Down, Beckenham, Kent stationery. Mounted to old card backing, upper left corner torn, two small spots, folding creases; matted and framed. Two lines written in Darwin's hand in the third person "With Mr. Darwin's Compliments." Darwin lived at Down House from 1842 until his death in 1882. It was in the house and its ample gardens that he worked on his theory of natural selection. "He undertook his major works at home, fitting out his estate as a place for natural history researches of a gentlemanly kind. He had the house renovated and extended, the lawns landscaped, gardens dug, and the road outside his study window lowered to keep passers-by from peering inside. A grove of trees was planted where he laid out his thinking path, the 'Sandwalk', and he began (but abandoned) a country diary, following in the footsteps of the Revd Gilbert White. Over the winter of 1843-4, with the second volume of his Beagle geology, Volcanic Islands, going into print, Darwin transformed the pencil sketch of his species theory into a coherent essay..." The second edition of the first part– subtitled Untersuchungen über den Einfluss, den die Getreidepreise, der Reichthum des Bodens und die Abgaben auf den Ackerbau ausüben – contains Thünen's analysis of rent, location and resource allocation.
DICKENS, Charles.
1 September, 1842. A bitter Dickens reflects on his trip to America Folded bifolium (total leaf size 377 x 226 mm), one page of letter text, another of integral address (and note to send by the Great Western, the first regularly scheduled transatlantic steamship), verso blank, two British postmarks: "Ship Letter" and the cancellation stamp "New York Ship, Sept. 18", wax seal. Housed in a custom green half morocco folding box, green cloth sides, spine and front panel lettered in gilt, latter on green morocco ground. General light toning. In very good condition. Autograph letter signed from Charles Dickens to Thomas C. Grattan (1792-1864), Irish novelist and British consul in Boston, upon Dickens's return from his first trip to America, in total around 200 words in his hand. A bitter Dickens reflects upon his trip, generally seen as unsuccessful following controversies over copyright, and has come back to find that the only change in Britain is an increase in income tax. He is nonetheless friendly, asking to be commended to their mutual friend and to Grattan's family, commenting on the death of a well-known publisher, and wishing him well. Dickens visited America in a six-month tour in 1842, partly as he had always admired the country, and also with the intent of publishing his observations, which were indeed published as American Notes for General Circulation in October 1842. Dickens landed in America in January 1842, welcomed by local dignitaries and cheering crowds, and was lined up with an itinerary of a visit to the White House, meetings with various literary and poli … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Dennistou, Scottish Art Collector
1842. Manuscript signed letter by Scottish art collector James Dennistoun to Lady Ann Cullum, while both are in Rome, concerning her acquisition of paintings by Crivelli, and making recommendation for a skilled local Italian restorer. 8vo. 3 pages in manuscript, double leaf measuring approximately 12,5 x 19 cm, with seashell watermark, integral address being simply 28 Corso, remnants of a green wax seal. Undated, but similar correspondence in the Cullum archives help to date this letter to the period before 1842. A small segment of mounting paper adhered to verso, loss to one corner at margin, text unobstructed, otherwise in very good condition. The paintings discussed in this correspondence are indeed treasures of antiquity, made by Carlo Crivelli (Venice c. 1430 - Ascoli Piceno 1495), Italian Renaissance painter of conservative Late Gothic decorative sensibility, who spent his early years in the Veneto, where he absorbed influences from the Vivarini, Squarcione and Mantegna. Crivelli's works are exceedingly scarce. Only two can be found today in Venice, both in the church of San Sebastiano. It is interesting to note that the present letter refers to more than one Crivelli painting, "the Crivellis... they" etc. Without seeing these specific art works, but holding the ancient artist in due high regard, Dennistoun states that they would surely equal Crivelli's other well-known and venerated pieces. He also estimates a value of 3,000 piastres [modest indeed for such an invaluable prize].. Signed. Manuscript.

"For the purpose of creating, in the South portions of the state particularly, an impression unfavorable to the Constitution to be submitted to the People," opponents of the regular Rhode Island government falsely claim that "a provision in the Constitution cuts off the right of fishery. That report is ABSOLUTELY UNFOUNDED IN TRUTH." This rare broadside insists emphatically that rights of Fishery "ARE RETAINED BY THE PEOPLE. they CANNOT BE DENIED NOR IMPAIRED." Puerto Rico - Miguel Moreno, 1842
1842. RARE SPANISH SEA CHART OF PUERTO RICO 'Carta Particular Esférica y Corográfica de la Isla de Puerto-Rico y las adyacentes que á la misma pertenecen, Vieques, Culebra, Caja de Muertos, Mona, Monito y Descecheo.' Rare separately published chart of Puerto Rico, drawn by Miguel Moreno and engraved by C. Noguera with lettering by M. Giraldos. Published by the Spanish Hydrographical Office in Madrid, in 1842. Size (plate mark): 62 x 93 cm. This chart of Puerto Rico depicts the topography of the island in fine detail. The island is divided into seven districts, which are identified at top left. Along the coasts, several ports, ravines, bays, river mouths, and more are located. The chart extends to show nearby island-municipalities Vieques and Culebra. Off shore shoals are shown, along with soundings, anchorages and other sailing details. An inset at bottom left provides a simple depiction of Isla de Mona (located off the west coast of Puerto Rico). The island's first lighthouses are market with a hint of colour. A key at the bottom indicates the symbols for towns and cities of various sizes as well as different soil types. The Dirección de Hidrografía, or the Directorate of Hydrographic Works, was established in 1797. Its roots were in the Casa de Contratación, founded in 1503 in Sevilla, which housed all the charts of the Spanish Empire and oversaw the creation and maintenance of the padrón real, the official master chart. The Casa, now in Cadiz, was shuttered in 1790, but Spain still needed a hydrographic body. In response, the Dirección was created in 1797. One of its fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DORR REBELLION] DOGERTY, Roger [pseud. Effingham Lawrence?]
Providence, n.d., ca. 1842. First Edition. Paperback. Lengthy poem "dedicated to the three tail Bashaw of Tripoli, and all the Barbary Powers," recounting the history of the Dorr Rebellion from a Dorrite's perspective, albeit unflatteringly. The rebellion of middle class citizens of Rhode Island, led by Thomas Wilson Dorr in 1841 and 1842, turned out to be an unsuccesful bid to expand enfranchisement in the state--at the time voters were required to be white, male, and own at least $134 in property. Attributed to the Louisiana politician Effingham Lawrence, later known for holding the shortest tenure in Congress, from March 4 to March 5, 1875 (see Susah H. Graham, "Call Me a Female Politician" (2006), p. 204, citing the inscription on a copy of this poem). SABIN 80868. Octavo (23cm.); publisher's brown pictorial side-stitched wrappers; 8pp. Wrappers a bit chipped and worn at extremities with brief splitting at previous horizontal fold, light soiling to both wrappers, else a Good or better copy of a quite fragile item.

BUCKINGHAM, James Silk
London: Fisher, Son, & Co, 1842. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1842 1ed Buckingham Eastern & Western States of America SLAVERY & INDIANS 3v SET James Silk Buckingham was a notable 19th-century English author who is best known for his reports on slave trade in Africa and the New World. He traveled throughout the world, in India, China, and the Middle East, and published accounts of his findings and discoveries. However, his works on slavery in the United States are without question his most important. His book 'The Eastern and Western States of America' is an 1842 description of life in America; however, each section seems to revert back to slaves or Native Americans in some sense - notes of negro prisons, colonies established in Africa for the sole purpose of abducting slaves, cotton factories, findings of ancient Indian remains in Kentucky and Ohio, and even discoveries of mummies which he claimed to be Egyptian! In the second volume, Buckingham also includes a fascinating description of the differences between slave and free states in America. An important first edition with fine, full-page steel engravings. The author, Hermann Bardenwerper (1820-1887), was the son of the businessman Johann Ludwig Bardenwerper from Braunschweig. He was born in 1820 and served an apprenticeship as a merchant. Hermann Bardenwerper was one of 9 cabin passengers, while the other 168 passengers were on the steam deck. Bardenwerper found work in Philadelphia and stayed there for several years. The travel memories describe his trip on the frigate "Pauline" in detail (39 pages) and, further, his last voyage in North America in June-August 1842 (89 pages), when he travelled from Philadelphia to Washington, New York and Canada. Nicancizade
Egypt: 1842. Very good. Bookplate of unknown previous owner in one volume. Mirʼāt-i kāʼināt. (مرآت کائنات.) Nisancizade Muhyiddin Mehmet 33cm x 21.5cm, two volumes, in fine royal binding, 1842. Nishandji-zade Mehemet Efendi collected the works of many scholars which he divided into eight parts and published as Mirʼāt-i kāʼināt (Mirror of Creation/Universe). The volumes contain a general history, with special reference to the Sultan's of Turkey from "creation" until the reign of Suleiman the magnificent. Published during the reign of Sultan Abdulmejid I (1839-1861), and in Egypt of Muhammad Ali Pasha (1805-1848). The bindings display a different coat of arms on the front boards and back boards, The coat of arms containing the Crocodile and Lion also bears the crescent moon with three stars a device used by Muhammed Ali Pasha. I have found only one example of this coat of arms online with the vague description "Egyptian Viceroy coat of arms". The other coat of arms bears the crown with crescent and single star used by the Ottoman Empire. There is also a seal in black ink to the rear ofone of the pages in the text, (see scans) Please email with any questions. [Attributes: First Edition]
