Girault de Prangey, Joseph Philbert.
A. Hauser, Paris, 1842. Folio (450 x 290 mm.), 30 chromolithographs including title page, all coloured by hand, rubbed cover, bookplate of William Arthur, sixth Duke of Portland, rare beautiful copy. Paris, , [1842]. AN IMPRESSIVE PUBLICATION ON THE ARABIAN ANTIQUITIES OF SPAIN. While John Frederick Lewis and David Roberts chased picturesque views of Spain in 1832-33, the French aristocrat Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey visited Granada, Seville and Cordoba, investigating the country’s Islamic monumental heritage. The results of his studies appeared in Monuments Arabes et Moresques de Cordoue, Séville et Grenade (1837-39) followed by Choix d’ornements moresques de l’Alhambra (1842). In 1841, he had published the sum of his researches in Essai sur l’architecture des arabes et des mores, en Espagne, en Sicilie et en Barbarie, in which he tried to build up a global history of Islamic architecture, being the first to compare the monuments of Andalusia with those of the Maghreb and Egypt. His depiction combine the Romantic tradition, full of picturesque details and characters, with a new sense of visual precision that opened the path to a renewed appreciation of Spain’s Islamic architecture and decoration. One of the finest books of views produced at the time; Girault de Prangey used the most accomplished artists to interpret his drawings in the lithographic stone. They include views, architectural details, ornaments and plans; the figures in the foreground of the views add charm as well as recording costume and customs. Famous painters engraved the plates first in Paris, th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burnes (1805-41) was sent on a commercial mission to the Afghan capital in late 1836 by Lord Auckland, Governor-General of India. 'Political concerns about Afghanistan's position as a buffer between the British and Russian empires dominated the mission. Burnes reached Kabul in September 1837 and was warmly welcomed by the amir, Dost Muhammad Khan, who was desperately seeking an ally to help fend off Sikh and Persian aggression. Burnes . wanted to offer him British support, but his hands were tied. Lord Auckland and his counsellors mistrusted Dost Muhammad's independence and proposed instead to restore a former amir, Shah Shuja, to the Afghanistan throne . Burnes swung into line behind this policy although he had little faith in it . In the summer of 1838 Burnes was sent ahead of the army of the Indus to smooth its passage through Sind and Baluchistan en route to Afghanistan. In August 1839 he was one of the three British officers who escorted Shah Shuja into Kabul . Towards the end of 1841 the politic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Providence: 1842. Hardcover. SCARCE. The first document is the text of the newly adopted state constitution, the state's first. From 1663 until 1842, the state was governed under the original charter granted to it by King Charles II. After rancorous debate in 1841-1842 over universal suffrage, which included the brief Dorr rebellion, the Freeman's Constitution was passed by the electorate. Both documents are in very good condition save for some occasional light foxing and aging to pages, and a 3 inch tear to the margin of the last page of the first one, not affecting the text. The second document is a discourse delivered in 1847 by Job Durfee, the Chief Justice of Rhode Island and a prominent figure in the state's government and politics. In this discourse the Judge provides a proud history of the state and praises it "extravagantly." Along with the discourse, the document appends a poem by Providence writer Sarah Helen Whitman that was recited to the Society before the Judge's discourse. Whitman is now perhaps best known for having been romantically involved with Edgar Allan Poe during the couple of years before his death. Their relationship developed after having composed poems to each other. The two documents are bound in a very good red leather binding with gilt ruling along edges and gilt titles to front cover. The front hinge is cracked, and there are light ink marks along the gutter between the first and second documents. 24 pages; 42 pages plus 5 pages AMHIST/072808. Very Good.

Collected by Horace Walpole
George Robins. 1/4 leather. The uncommon 1842 catalogue documenting the entire contents of Strawberry Hill, the renowned estate of Horace Walpole (1717-1797) in Twickenham, London. Auctioned off by George Robins in a remarkable 24 day offering which started on Monday April 25th, 1842 and (incredibly) ran for the next 23 days ("Sundays excepted"). The elegant catalogue has been re-backed in a period 1/4 calf over its original marbled boards. 5 raised bands, handsome title label (with crisp gilt-titling). The gilt-crest of "The Society of Writers to the Signet" at both panels. Very light rubbing --and just a touch of soiling-- along the panels, light offsetting at the corners of the endsheets and pastedowns. Small unidentified label at the top of the front pastedown as well. The text is very clean, with no foxing or markings to speak of. And the wood-engravings, which appear thruout in the "Prefatory Remarks", are in pristine condition. A well-preserved, solidly VG to VG+ example. Quarto, a painstaking mid-19th century itemizing of all that came onto the auction block in this historic 24 day marathon. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Plates nice and bright with no foxing. No previous owner's names, not exlibrary. Overall in EXCELLENT condition. A good gift. William Henry Bartlett (born March 26, 1809, died September 13, 1854) was a British artist, best known for his numerous steel engravings. Bartlett was born in Kentish Town, London in 1809. He was apprenticed to John Britton (1771-1857), and became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled throughout Britain, and in the mid and late 1840s he travelled extensively in the Balkans and the Middle East. He made four visits to the United States between 1835 and 1852. In 1835, Bartlett first visited the United States in order to draw the buildings, towns and scenery of the northeastern states. The finely detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis as American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. American Scenery was published by George Virtue in London in 30 monthly installments from 1837 to 1839. Bound editions of the work were published from 1840 onward. His impressions of Canada were collected in Canadian Scenery in 1842. Bartlett made sepia wash drawings the exact size to be engraved. His engraved views were widely copied by artists, but no s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bound with: Canadian Scenery Illustrated. Original quarter roan, gilt-lettered in decorated publisher's boards; occassional spotting to edges of plates. A rare set of the two works issued together and assembled from the original parts. A most appealing set of an illustrated classic, here in extended form with both the separate American and Canadian publications issued in this form as one continuous work, numbered as a coherent series on the bindings. The series in this form includes over 200 steel-engraved images. The publisher's charming binding is in particularly good condition. "The New World of Columbus...its sudden rise to independence, wealth and power" (Author's preface) is captured in this Victorian publication on the United States and "British America" (Canada) with fine engravings after the noted British landscape painter William Henry Bartlett. This is a wonderful, illustrated romp published at a time to illustrate the last days of relative freedom of the North American native peoples (Willis cites Blumenbach in analysing the "real character of the aboriginal inhabitant") and the development of the cities on the West coast of America and (unusually) Lower Canada. William Bartlett "made four voyages to the United States and Canada...the fruits of which appeared in American Scenery and Canadian Scenery" (DNB). The famous plates depict North American cities ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peters, Richard
Philadelphia: stereotyped by L. Johnson, 1842. First edition. 140 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition of this report of this monumental Supreme Court decision regarding escaped slaves, preceding by 15 years and rivaling in importance the Dred Scott case of 1857. "In Prigg, the Court identified slavery as a core constitutional commitment with which states could not interfere. In this case, the Court struck down northern states' 'personal liberty laws' established to protect alleged fugitive slaves from recapture without due process of law. When the professional 'slave catcher' Edward Prigg tried to remove Margaret Moran, an alleged runaway, he was unable to meet the burden of proof set out by Pennsylvania's 1826 Personal Liberty Law and failed to obtain the legal certificate permitting him to remove her. When Prigg proceeded to ignore this and removed Moran illegally to Maryland, Pennsylvania convicted him of kidnapping. The US Supreme Court, however, overwhelmingly overturned Prigg's conviction (8-1) and pronounced state laws interfering with the return of alleged runaways a violation of the Fugitive Slave Clause..." (Beaumont, The Civic Constitution, 2014, p. 128). Blockson 9905; Dummond, p. 140; Sabin 61207. Original brown ribbed cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down, titled in gilt. Marginal dampstaining throughout, scattered foxing, some wear to boards, good.

On the 13th of Nov., 1840, I was at a place called Fulton City, on the upper waters of the Mississippi river, waiting for the descent of some steamboat in which I might take passage. About day-break the next morning a boat was hailed, and I went on board. The bustle of embarkation was hardly over before I learned that the boat was owned and principally manned by Mormons, being called Nauvoo. It moreover carried Joseph Smith, Jr., in the character of passenger; although in the reality he was chief director of the whole concern. Mayer, J(ulius) R(obert).
Heidelberg Winter, 1842. (21,5 x 12,5 cm). "In this second paper Mayer elaborated the conceptual basis of his theory, examining, he said, the precis meaning of the term 'force'. As in the previous paper, Mayer concluded that forces are first causes; hence the law 'causa aequat effectum' assures us that force is quantitatively indestructible. Like matter, forces are objects which are able to assume different forms and which are indestructible. Forces differ from matter only because they are imponderable" (DSB). - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt bzw. braunfleckig, sonst gut erhalten. - DSB 9, 235; Poggendorff II, 94; Eisert 3; Darmstaedter 463; Garrison-Morton 606 [Attributes: First Edition]
