Journal of an exploring tour beyond the Rocky Mountains, under the direction of the A.B.C.F.M. in the years 1835, '36, and '37.

Ithaca, NY: Mack, Andrus, & Woodruff. 12vo (20 cm, 7.9"). 408 pp.; 1 map, 1 plt.. 1842 Third edition: "A description of the geography, geology, climate, productions of the country, and the numbers, manners, and customs of the natives." The Rev. Samuel Parker (1779–1866) accompanied a fur-trading party west into what was then known as either Oregon Country or the Columbia District, under the sponsorship of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Here he describes the voyage (including a brief mention of the Mormons in Missouri), the region's natural history, and the degrees of interest in Christianity expressed by the Native Americans his party encountered — which last was his primary focus. The volume opens with an => oversized, folding map, engraved by M.M. Peabody, which Graff describes as "the earliest map of the Oregon interior with a pretense to accuracy"; includes an account of Parker's => voyage to Hawaii and Tahiti; and closes with a => vocabulary of Indian languages (Nez Perce, Klicatat, Calapooa, and Chenook). The plate depicts "Basaltic Formations on the Columbia River. Publisher's charcoal-colored ribbed cloth, covers with blind-stamped arabesque frame, spine with gilt-stamped title; cloth chipped at spine extremities and front joint, corners rubbed. Mild to moderate foxing. Map with faint spotting, a pinpoint hole at one corner, and one very short tear from inner edge; foxing and soiling, never dark/nasty but present throughout. A comfortably solid copy.

Venice: Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842. Single volume bound as two, with a total of 88 lithographic plates, all but four of which are handcoloured; scattered foxing, some plates thumbed at the margins and two with old paper repairs; a very good copy in recent half library binding, bound without sectional title-page, index leaves loosely inserted. A tremendous series of coloured images appears in this vibrant and diverse Italian ethnology of the Pacific and Americas, an entire volume from a larger series covering the peoples of the world. With a total of 88 plates, of which the vast majority are handcoloured, this volume of the Galleria Universali di tutti Popoli del Mondo covers the entirety of the Americas, Australia and the Pacific islands. The medium of lithography allowed the reproduction of engraved images from earlier publications for popular works of this nature. Ten of the plates depict Australian Aboriginal subjects, and are derived from a wide variety of sources including the First Fleet accounts of Governor Arthur Phillip and Captain John Hunter. Other sources include the Baudin voyage artists Nicolas-Martin Petit and Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, while the iconic images of Tasmanian Aborigines originate from the official account of Captain Cook's third voyage.Other Australian subjects of interest include a view of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains and the church at Parramatta. The Pacific islands are richly represented, including indigenous rituals, burials, costumes and the like. Images originate from the voyages of Cook, Kotzebue, Duperrey and others. Of particular interest is a plan of an outrigger canoe of the Caroline islands.

A NAIVE AND INNOCENT WORK, DRAWN WITH TENDERNESS AND CARE This is a another famous book by Kitao Masayoshi, aka by studio names: Kuwagata Keisai et al., [1764-1824]. Per Lawrence and we summarize, he was a celebrated Ukiyo-e painter, printmaker and illustrator born in Suruga province. He was also the star pupil of Kitao Shigemasa, and worked until 1797 as an Ukiyo-e artist under the 'Go' or studio name of Kitao Masayoshi, designing numerous prints & and illustrating books. In 1797, he became the official painter to the Daimyo of Tsuyama & was also given some training by Kano Eisen'in. He took his grandmother's name of Kuwagata and then began to work in the Kano school style. Eventually retired and became a lay monk. He is known for his subtle and tender lines, his prints of lowers done with delicacy. His work is charming, expressing innocence and with remarkable delicacy and softness. * The current work is a collection of his color drawings of mostly of animals [mammals], birds, insects, frogs, fish, turtles, shrimp, lobster, shell-fish, whales and other sea creatures. For a companion volume in the same style on human figures please inquire for his RYAKU GASHIKI. * Hokusai was greatly influenced by his unique style, which found its way into the his famous series title: HOKUSAI MANGA. These caricature were done with naive innocence, with a dash of fun intended, and some irony. The work shows a great diversity in his ability to draw and perceive nature as it actually was, during the late 18th century. The work is delicately pastel colored, revealing his keen sense of nature's animals, wide variety and large number of his quaint drawings are presented in this book. A delight to behold ! * An important book. Properly collected by the world's great libraries and museums, as well as private collectors. * BIBLIOGRAPHY 1. H.         Remarkable Hills on the upper Missouri

Paris, Coblenz and London, 1842. Aquatint engraving by Salathé after Bodmer, proof on india paper mounted, blindstamp, issue with no date after English imprint. Shaved into plate area. A rare India proof of this composite plate made up from nine separate views, but with plain borders between each image. Numbered in the plate from 1 to 9 they were all sketched during the journey up river aboard the 60-foot keelboat Flora. Prince Maximilian and his party left Fort Union on 6 July and eventually arrived at Fort McKenzie on 9 August 1833 traveling through a number of different regions including the Mauvaises Terres and the Stone Walls (e.g. Nos. 2, 6 and others in the present composite, an area that Maximilian wrote of as `the most interesting part of the whole course of the Missouri'), also included are images of formations now known as Dike and Citadel Rock (nos. 4 and 5). Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. Graff 4648; Howes M443a; Pilling 2521; Sabin 47014; Wagner-Camp 76:1.

        Autograph letter signed.

Copenhagen, 18. IX. 1842. - 8vo. 2¼ pp. on bifolium. With integral address panel. To his translator Nicolas Martin: "[.]" Shortly after having the pleasure of receiving your beautiful, interesting 'Ariel' I sent to you a letter accompanied by the German translation of one of my novels which enjoyed most success 'A musician, that's all! (Nur ein Geiger)'. One of my fellow countrymen, naval officer, was in charge but there is almost a year that I have learned nothing of the reception of the book or the letter, I thus take advantage today of the departure for Paris of one of my friends [.] I ask you to tell him if you received the sending in question, and to tell him what concerns your own literary activity. I have just published a great poetic work 'A Poet's Bazaar', which appeared in Danish, and will appear soon in German translation which I will take the liberty to send you a copy as soon as I have your address. For the dramatic productions, I have given this year at the Royal Theatre vaudeville 'The Bird on the Pear Tree', a tragedy 'Agnete and the Marine Man' [.]". At the moment, Andersen is working on another play. He spent the summer in the property of the Minister of Finance who "has the most beautiful land I know [.] Send me some news! A letter of you will make the same pleasure made by the first bird of passage to the northener [.]". - Fol. 2 (address leaf) with small tears from opening the letter, otherwise in good condition.

He used, for this, the leading Mexico City fine-lithography firm of Massé y Decaen, which employed the artists Blanco, Iriarte, and Heredia "copiando los dibujos de Tony Johannot" (Palau). => Palau opined that the result "representa un esfuerzo editorial muy estimable." ?The Alhambra, along with L'Art Arabe by Prisse d'Avennes, represents one of the two great Victorian monuments in book form, dedicated to Islamic art. To day quite rare?. Cfr. Brunet,III,564: ?Bel ouvrage? - Graesse,III,475. In folio max. (mm. 675x487), 2 voll., bound in half contemporary leather, spine with decorations and gold title. This extraordinary work, with text in English and French, is so divided: - Vol. I: 5 ff. (title - page, dedication, list of subscribers, list of plates, advertisement), pp. 20 (historical notice), (102) description of the plates. Illustrated with a chromolithographic frontispiece and 51 full - page lithographic plates, of which 2 hand - coloured plans, 3 double - page plates, 1 double - page folding plate, and 25 chromolithographs + an unnumbered big coloured tailpiece, at the end. - Vol. II: 2 ff. (title - page and list of plates). Illustrated with a chromolithographic frontispiece and 87 numbered images on 50 full - page lithographic plates, of which 42 are chromolithographs. Very rare "first edition" of a celebrated monument of Victorian bookmaking, illustrating one of Spain's finest and most well known examples of Islamic architecture. Owen Jones embarked on a Grand Tour in 1832, first visiting Italy and then Greece where he met the French architect Jules Goury. Together they travelled to Egypt to study the Islamic architecture of Cairo, and then to Constantinople before arriving in Granada where they studied the Islamic decoration at the Alhambra. Jones's studies of the Alhambra were most important in the development of his theoris on flat pattern, geometry, and polychromy. He returned to London determined to publish the results of their studies. He undertook the printing project himself, and he did his own research into the new extraordinary process of chromolithography. The Alhambra, along with L'Art Arabe by Prisse d'Avennes, represents one of the two great Victorian monuments in book form, dedicated to Islamic art. Cfr. Brunet,III,564: ?Bel ouvrage? - Graesse,III,475. In our copy 6 black and white plates with marginal halos; chromolithographs with only very light foxing on margins, otherwise a good copy.

        Tower-Rock view on the Mississippi

Paris, Coblentz and London, 1842. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by John Outhwaite after Bodmer, blindstamp, issue with no date after English imprint. Bodmer and Prince Maximilian set out for St.Louis from Mount Vernon on 18 March 1833 making their way rapidly down the River Ohio and joining the Mississippi on 20 March. On the afternoon of 21 March 1833 their steamer approached a feature known as the Grand Tower (or Tower-Rock), which Maximilian described as an isolated drumlike formation between sixty and eighty feet high. He added that `Mr.Bodmer sketched the Grand Tower and found this place highly interesting and picturesque'. The scene includes the traveller's Ohio paddle-steamer and three Mississippi keel-boats, a form of freight transportation that by the 1830s was fast being replaced by the steamers. They arrived in Boston in July 1832, traveled on to Philadelphia, where they stayed with Napoleon Bonaparte's elder brother Joseph. From here they headed west across Pennsylvania across the Alleghenies to Pittsburgh and the Ohio country, visiting all the important German settlements en route. Their most important stop on their route west was at the utopian colony of New Harmony in Indiana. The Prince spent five months there in the company of some of the countries leading scientific men, and studying all the relevant literature on backcountry America. On 24 March 1833 the party reached St. Louis, Missouri, and the start of the journey into Indian country. Graff 4648; Howes M443a; Pilling 2521; Sabin 47014; Wagner-Camp 76:1.

Original akvarel visende papirhandler-grosserer Wilhelm Wanschers hus på Strandvejen.

19,8x24,3 cm. I guldramme [33x38 cm.].. Remarkable Hills on the upper Missouri

Paris, Coblenz and London, 1842. Aquatint engraving by Salathé after Bodmer. A composite plate made up from twenty separate views, but with plain borders between each image. Numbered in the plate, they were all sketched during the journey up river aboard the 60-foot keelboat Flora. Prince Maximilian and his party left Fort Union on 6 July and eventually arrived at Fort McKenzie on 9 August 1833 traveling through a number of different regions including the Mauvaises Terres (eg. no. 21 in the present composite) and the Stone Walls (no. 10 and others, an area that Maximilian wrote of as `the most interesting part of the whole course of the Missouri').

Original akvarel visende papirhandler-grosserer Wilhelm Wanschers hus på Strandvejen.

      - 19,8x24,3 cm. I guldramme [33x38 cm.]. The travelers meeting with the Minatarre Indians. near Fort Clark

Paris, Coblentz and London, 1842. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Alex Manceau after Bodmer, issue with date added to English imprint. This is one Bodmer's most famous images: the only depiction he made of both his sponsor, Prince Maximilian, and of himself. The travelers spent the winter of 1833-1834 at Fort Clark, between the Knife and Heart Rivers in the territory of the Mandan and Hidatsa Tribes. Bodmer here shows the first meeting with the Hidatsa outside the palisade of the fort; a carefully composed image ably portraying the wary curiosity with which the representatives of two very different ways of life greeted each other. Bodmer stands, top-hatted, to the far right, Prince Maximilian is next to him, Dreidoppel is visible behind the two of them. The individuals amongst the Hidatsa include Ahschüpsa Masihichsi (`Chief of the Pointed Horn') whom Bodmer had painted on 28 February 1834.
