The Heraldry of Fish. Notices of the principal families bearing fish in their Arms. For more info about this item, see our RARE FISH BOOKS site

      - John van Voorst, printed by Samuel Bentley, London, 1842. Contemporary full-green Morocco. First edition. Super Octavo (259 x 162 mm), pp.15, 250, with 205 fine wood-cuts in the text. Engravings probably by Mary and Elizabeth Clint. Full green morocco, gilt lettering on spine and 5 raised bands. Second compartment reads Heraldry of Fish, third compartment Moule, and London 1842 on spine heel. Other compartments with gilt emblems. Gilt ornamentation on covers. Gilt bordered dentelles, marbled pastedowns, front and endpapers, top edge gilt. A beautiful and very rare large paper copy. Moule states that, as symbols for names, almost all fish have been used in heraldry. A UNIQUE COPY with 11 ADDITIONAL PLATES of which one is hand-coloured. In many instances fish have been incorporated into the arms to reflect the produce of the state or the family name. The fish displayed on the heraldic device may also be chosen by the bearer of the device because he feels that the particular species displays a characteristic which he admires. Thus the acquaint device has a twofold interest. The subjects in The Heraldry of Fish are arranged according to a natural history form of classification. The book consists of XIV sections. Of particular interest are: V. The salmon, trout, smelt, and grayling, with their enemy the otter; XII. The dog-fish, sea lions, and other monsters; XIII. The seal, mermaid and triton. Among the extra illustrations, some of which are hand-drawn, are: the contre-seal of Godfrey de Lucy, Bishop of Winchester; the autograph, seal and arms of Sir Thomas Lucy; the arms of Walton and Cotton; the ancient seal of the corporation of Swansea; and the arms of van Voorst of Utrecht. The only hand-coloured plate is of Coryphaena hippurus. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Trio [No. 3 in A major] for Piano, Violin and Violoncello. Op. 124. Autograph musical manuscript full score

      - 2 pp. Oblong folio. The first 27 bars of the Scherzo on one page and the final 7 bars of the Andante on the other. With a sketch of the opening 5 bars of the violin part to the Scherzo at the conclusion of the second movement. Headed in another hand: "Manuscript von Louis Spohr. Bruchstück aus dem dritten Trio für Piano, Violine und Cello componiert 1842." Somewhat browned, a bit heavier to edges and folds; creased and very slightly abriaded along folds; several small edge tears and very small holes, just touching notation. Göthel locates autograph manuscripts of sections of this work in Kassel and Braunschweig. The first edition was published in 1843 by Schuberth. Spohr, a friend and contemporary of Beethoven and Weber, was a successful composer, conductor and violinist. He held various notable posts, including that of Kapellmeister in Kassel. His works were performed extensively throughout Europe and he was second only to Mendelssohn in popularity in England. His method for violin is still highly regarded and his chamber music remains very much a part of the standard repertoire. Spohr was "regarded by many contemporaries as worthy of a place beside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the pantheon of the greatest composers. Mozart's Figaro and Wagner's Tristan were both composed during [his] lifetime; his own work looks, Janus-like, towards both the formalism and clarity of the Classical tradition, and the structural and harmonic experimentation associated with 19th-century Romanticism.". In 1836 Spohr married Carl Pfeiffer's 28-year-old sister Marianne, a gifted amateur pianist who stimulated him to compose a series of chamber works with piano, for which he had written little up to that time; these included the three duos concertants for violin and piano (1836-7), the five piano trios (1841-9), the Piano Quintet (1845) and the Septet (1853)."         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

[Wien], 4. V. 1842. - 1 ½ SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 4to.

BIBLIOMANIA; OR BOOK MADNESS; A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ROMANCE ... NEW AND IMPROVED EDITION ...

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1842. Large, thick octavo. Full dark brown crushed levant, gilt extra, by Zaehnsdorf (with their additional small paraph on rear pastedown). Frontispieces and engraved plates. Pages 1-18 and 375-8 printed on inferior paper and uniformly darkened (with small chip to one blank foretip), trace of light foxing early and late, otherwise a very good copy, in a handsome binding. Bookplate on front pastedown. First combined edition. The text of the 1809 first edition is bound at the end with its own separate title and register. The prefatory note to the 1811 edition follows the "Advertisement" for this edition. According to Windle & Pippin, the edition consisted of 500 copies, of which 50 or 55 were printed on large paper, and there is some variation of the order of placement of the elements between some copies. This is the ordinary issue, and was issued without the two plates specially executed for the large paper copies. Tipped in the front of this copy is a brief a.l.s. from Dibdin, 31 August 1842, to a prominent London bookseller, "Mr. [Joseph] Lilly Bookseller, 19 King Street, Covent Garden." He writes: "Dear Sir / I wait in Town almost entirely for your 'gentle response.' 'What news from Rialto?' T.F. Dibdin." Tipped to the bottom blank margin of the letter are two early relevant news clippings. Joseph Lilly was among the chief booksellers who had a hand in the formation of Huth's library. The oft-reprinted sentimental classic for several generations of book collectors, even if it does occasionally cast barbs at some of the more obsessive traits of some members of its constituency.         Report of the Case of Edward Prigg Against the Commonwealth of...

1842. The Crucial Decision that Undercut the Fugitive Slave Act [Trial]. Prigg, Edward, Plaintiff in Error. Peters, Richard [1780-1848], Reporter. Report of the Case of Edward Prigg Against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Argued and Adjudged in the Supreme Court of the United States, At January Term, 1842. In Which it was Decided That All the Laws of the Several States Relative to Fugitive Slaves are Unconstitutional and Void: And that Congress Have the Exclusive Power of Legislation on the Subject of Fugitive Slaves Escaping into Other States. Philadelphia: Stereotyped by L. Johnson, 1842. 140 pp. Octavo (9-3/4" x 6"). Recent quarter cloth over marbled boards, gilt title to spine. Light toning and foxing to text. Ex-library. Small inkstamps to edges and head of title page. A nice copy in a handsome binding. * Only edition. A landmark in the history of American slavery, Prigg v. Pennsylvania was the first Supreme Court case to address the state and Federal laws concerning fugitive slaves, most notably the Federal Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. Prigg, a Maryland slave-catcher, apprehended Margaret Moran, an alleged fugitive slave, in Pennsylvania and brought her back to Maryland. Pennsylvania convicted him for kidnapping because he failed to obtain a state-mandated Certificate of Removal, a court document permitting the capture of a fugitive slave. The U.S. Supreme Court reversed the decision. In an opinion written by Justice Story, the Court held that Congress had the exclusive power to regulate the treatment of fugitive slaves. Thus Pennsylvania's requirement of a Certificate of Removal was illegal under the Constitution. The Court held that slave-catchers could seize alleged fugitives without judicial approval. However, and more important, the Court also said the Federal government lacked the authority to compel state officials to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. In sum, Prigg v. Pennsylvania undercut the power of that act. Anger in the slave states over this decision led to the Compromise of 1850, which compelled the governments and residents of free states to enforce the capture and return of fugitive slaves. Leipzig: Georg Wigand, 1842. 318 x 267 mm. 19th century half calf gilt, marbled boards, light edgewear. Endpapers a bit foxed but fine otherwise. First Printed Edition of the Egyptian “Book of the Dead,” a loose collection of ancient religious / magical funerary texts intended to assist a dead person’s journey into the afterlife. This category of Egyptian papyri was first given that name in this 1842 edition by Prussian archeologist Karl Richard Lepsius, one of the founders of scientific Egyptology.. Lepsius’s Todtenbuch der Ägypter reproduces by lithography the Ptolemaic papyrus known as “papyrus Turin 1791.” In this edition Lepsius introduced his numbering system for the Book’s texts or “spells,” which is still in use today. There is no canonical version of the Book of the Dead. The Book’s spells derive from the hieroglyphic funerary texts carved on the walls of royal tombs and later written on coffins; the earliest identifiable spells from the Book, found on the coffin of Queen Menthuhotep, date from about 1600 B.C.E. Around 1550 B.C.E. papyrus copies of Books of the Dead, written in cursive hieroglyphic script, began to be substituted for wall carvings or coffin inscriptions. These were often prefabricated in funerary workshops, with spaces left for the name of the deceased to be filled in later; the Book of the Dead is thus the earliest text that was commercially produced by scribal workshops in anticipation of sale rather than written out on commission from customers.

A pioneering economic study on agriculture, the second edition contains Thünen's major theories, including the analysis of rent, location and resource allocation. As Thünen states in the preface, important additions have been made, particularly to the 'statics of the soil' and the 'theory of rent', which form two central ideas of his theory (Thunen, p. v). Of this economic classic Schumpeter writes: "If we judge [Thünen and Ricardo] exclusively by the amount of ability of the purely theoretical kind that went into their work, then, I think, Thünen should be placed above Ricardo or indeed above any economist of the period, with the possible exception of Cournot" (Schumpeter, Critical Assessments, p.29).

[Poster] PLAZA DE TOROS en la tarde de lunes 27 de Junio de 1842...

NP [prob. Spain]: NP , 1842. 45x64.5cm. Wonderful and very scarce example of a bull-fighting poster from the early 19th century. The names of the matadors and the bulls (with ages) - "Artillero, Capuchino, Brujo, etc. - are given. The bulls are all from the famous "ganaderia de Don Manuel Suarez, vecino de Coria del Rio, provincia de Sevilla..." -- as well as prices of seats. Also, "se previene" the throwing of oranges and orange peels, stones and sticks into the arena, not to mention "banderillas de fuego, perros de presa..." etc. In our years of dealing in hispanic material, we have never seen anything like this of an earlier vintage, and the condition is spectacular. Images available on request. Condition is fine.
