        The Negroland of the Arabs Examined and Explained;

      1841 - or, an Inquiry into the Early History and Geography of Central Africa. First edition. Large folding map. 8vo. A fine copy in modern half morocco, gilt. xvi, 143, [2]ads.pp. London, J Arrowsmith, Based on extracts from the writings of Ibn Khaldun and Ibn Batutah, this work is a comparative account of early georgraphic descriptions of Central Africa in light of European exploration of the day. ?The attainment of that end will throw a steady light on the past condition of a country now awakening a general interest. It will enable us to trace some important political revolutions; to discern the nations that have stood forth politcally eminent, and to estimate correctly . the progress of civilization in Africa? (Preface). Cooley first became associated with Africa upon his exposing M Douville's fraud, Voyage au Congo, in 1832. He later became an honourary free member of the Royal Geographic Society.         Eliza Grimwood, a domestic legend of the Waterloo Road, with biographical notices of her fair companions; also, Sketches of dukes, lords, Hon. M.P.s, magistrates, and her murderer.

      B.D. Cousins. [1841] - FIRST EDITION. Front., illus. two signed W.M. or N. Contemp. half brown calf, gilt spine, red label; rubbed & sl. chipped at tail. Scarce: BL & Oxford only on Copac. In 40 pts, the last two without illus. The frontispiece is ?Catastrophe at Whorlton Bridge . 14th October, 1829? The plot is based on the actual murder of a prostitute on 6th May 1838. ?Lloyd?s Weekly London Newspaper? reports in August 1845 that the man named Hubbard, charged with the murder and exculpated, had died in about 1842, but that a soldier named George Hill supposedly confessed in Dublin in 1844. On September 14, 1845 the newspaper reports that a suspect who has signed a confession has appeared in Court, but there is no further information. This revival of interest in the case was perhaps prompted by the publication of this satirical novel, vividly exposing London low life, which however names a different murderer. It was first advertised in 1841 with Pt. 1 to be given away with no. 235 of The Penny Satirist, the wrapper and frontispiece to be in pt. 2, (October 17, 1841). The Author is described as ?of great eminence? but has not yet been identified. One of the interesting episodes in the novel features a poor penny-a-liner Gabriel Augustus Gregory Crowe of Scottish origin, who has been identified (by Louis James) as a portrait of George Augustus Sala, but who may equally in part represent another ?blood? author Gabriel Alexander. Crowe is ?one of the most respectable Dreadful Accident-makers in London?, what we would now call an ?ambulance chaser? This copy has a pencil note that it belonged to the celebrated collector Ronald Rouse of Norwich, and also states that in 1828, ironically, Eliza Grimwood was one of the first people to see the mutilated remains of Maria Marten.         L'Astrolabe Faisant de l'eau sur un Glacon. 6 Fevrier 1838

      Paris 1841 - An Antarctic view from "Voyage au Pole Sud et dans l'Oceanie sur les Corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zelee.". A lithograph from the folio atlas volume of the "historique" section [atlas pittoresque] or the famous French scientific voyage whose " 'aims were to explore the south polar regions and various island groups in the Pacific.' This view: L'Astrolabe Faisant de l'eau sur un Glacon. 6 Fevrier 1838. (Parages Antarctiques.) Plt. 22. Stunning vertical close-up of the Astrolabe in ice, seen from the rear. The men are busy on the ice, capturing seals, chipping ice, surveying, etc. Very lt. foxing o/w vgc. 'The expedition reached the ice pack in Jan. 1838, but failed to penetrate it or get south of the 64th parallel. Returning eastward they visited the South Orkney and South Shetland Islands, and discovered Joinville Island and Louis Philippe Land.In 1840, from Tasmania, they returned to the Antarctic region where Adelie Land was discovered.'" (Hill). Black & white lithographs, some with sepia tones. Image size approx. 12" x 17" on heavy rag paper 21" x 13 1/4". Most have the official blind-stamp of the voyage in the lower margin. The artist on the voyage was L. LeBreton. The prints are quite stunning records of the ships and life on board, catching seals, making water, usually watched with interest by a group of penguins. There is a strong feeling of the sheer expanse of the Antarctic, there among the ice flows. Ferguson 3184; Spence 399; Hill p.89.

        Voyage dans la Russie meridionale et la Crimee, par la Hongrie, la Valachie et la Moldavie.

      Lacrampe for Ernest Bourdin Paris 1841 - Tall 8vo. (26 x 16.7 cm). Half-title, wood-engraved frontispiece on India paper, title, vii, 621, [3 including errata and table] pp., with 23 wood-engraved plates after Raffet, all printed on India paper mounted and with tissue guards, one page of sheet music, numerous wood engravings in text; some occasional spotting, a bit browned towards end. Contemporary green morocco by Boutigny (with label), boards with richly gilt floral ornaments and Russian double-headed eagles, flat spine titled and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers; spine slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped. Beautifully bound example of this celebrated travelogue; the first of Demidoff's travelogues to be published, with all plates printed on India paper. In 1837 Count Anatoliy Nikolaevich Demidoff, Prince of San Donato (1812-70), launched a geological expedition to Ukraine and Crimea at his own expense. He was accompanied ion his travels by the artist Denis Raffet, who illustrated Demidoff's account. The present copy seems to belong to a rare 1841 reissue of the 1840 first edition, and is identical to the 1840 edition in every way, including the errata. This 1841 second issue is not mentioned in the usual bibliographies, which date the second edition (with different pagination) from 1854. Cf. for the 1840 issue Atabey 337 and Brunet II, 583; not in Blackmer. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Young Lady's Toilet

      Hartford and Berea: E.B & E.C. Kellogg, 1841. Cardboard covers. Very good. Complete with title page and 19 leaves, each featuring one or more moveable flaps that, when raised, reveal a commendable quality. 19 of the original 21 flaps are present. Card covers; sound binding. Minor wear; some foxing. Dampstain to the title-page and first four leaves. The pages of this children's behavior book show illustrations of objects found on a young woman's dressing table. Surprises occur when flaps on the pages are raised and it becomes clear that the label does not address the physical item, but rather describes an underlying quality or trait. For example, "A wash to smooth wrinkles" becomes "contentment." And "Fine lip salve" is "cheerfulness." Some of the items relate to study and work: two earrings reveal "attention" and "retention" along with the advice, "With these clear drops appended to the ear / instructive lessons you will hear," and an "Invaluable pair of bracelets" turn out to be "industry" and "perseverance.". Toilet books were a 19th century genre of movable books, the first of which, simply titled The Toilet, was illustrated by miniaturist William Grimaldi and published in London in 1821. Rather scarce. As of 2017 no other examples of this title are for sale in the trade, although a number are held by institutions. Five examples, in varied conditions, have been sold at auction in the past sixty years.

He is the first to use the term Renaissance to describe his time. This work is of fundamental importance because it poses the methodological premises of the History of art. It brings together the biographies of the Italian painter from Cimabue to Michelangelo. In addition, Vasari will realize for the Medici the corridor that will link the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti. A little rubbed and marked, short tears to spine, with slight surface loss to margins. Ink inscription 'From Mr Orndell(?)' to upper wrapper. One plate detached. A rare provincial account, with a lithographed wrapper and four plates lithographed by S. Straker, of Bishopgate St., London, of the origins of the farcical Dorset legend of the Shapwick Monster; a crab dropped by a travelling fishmonger from Poole en route to Bere Regis mistaken for a 'Monster' by a 'country clown' who stirred up an angry mob of locals to repel the invader. It is the only known work of Buscall Fox (1818-87), East Anglian painter, who was lodging in Dorset at the time of this work's publication. Neither COPAC nor OCLC locate a single copy.         Autograph letter signed, with a fine illustration.

      Oxford, 6. VIII. 1841. - 4to. 2¾ pp. on bifolium. To an unidentified recipient: "I have been favoured by your letter of June 29th, in which you have given me your opinion of your drawing of Blenheim, for which I am very much obliged. As the drawing was then in London, I thought it best to defer replying to your letter till I should have it before me, or till I had made the alterations you mentioned, which I believe I have now completed, and which undoubtedly improve it very much. In the first place I have darkened the large green oak No. 1, on the right, also the lower part of the warm oak No. 2 on the left, the upper part, at present, I am unwilling to alter unless I find that it be your wish that I should do so. The Wych Elm No. 3 was very yellow, but I have now made it somewhat green, such as it might be when the foliage has undergone a partial change only. The small beech trees remain much the same, for some time I was unwilling to do any thing to them, I have however made them a little darker. I have endeavoured to work up the distance and building to the effect you desired; and the ferns in the foreground I have varied both in effect and colour. I should say that I have not done much to the building, and was unwilling for some time to touch it, but after making the other alterations, I ventured also to deepen and warm it a little, and I now think it better. I shall be much obliged if you will inform me if you recollect any other little thing that you desire I should do to it, and I shall be most happy to do my best to work up to your idea of the subject. I must beg to say that I agree entirely with you as to propriety of strengthening the effect according to your suggestion [.]".

        Piano Trio no. 1 - Autograph Musical Manuscript Fragment

      - Fragment of an autograph musical manuscript in the hand of the German composer, violinist and conductor. The manuscript contains a section of 78 bars from the second movement of his Piano Trio no. 1, op. 119 over 4 pp. on 2 leaves. The music begins at 2 measures before the Peters edition's rehearsal letter N and goes to the end of the movement. The composer's corrections and changes are visible in several places, with some variances from the printed edition. Labeled as Spohr's autograph in several other hands in ink and pencil in the margins. Both leaves unfortunately split vertically in two places, with one large section of the second leaf missing and smaller areas of the first leaf missing. Toning; splits, chipping, and tears; but legible and overall in good condition. 15 x 10.75 inches (38.5 x 27.5 cm)."During his early years Spohr wrote little involving piano except lieder [.] he largely ignored the piano until his second wife's pianistic ability (and perhaps the greater technical perfection of the instrument) came to arouse his interest. His pieces for violin and piano contain some attractive music, particularly the programmatic (or, rather, impressionistic) Reisesonate op.96; but the five piano trios (1841-9) are masterpieces of their kind, and extraordinarily individual in their approach to the medium."Highly regarded during his lifetime, the German violinist and composer Louis Spohr composed ten symphonies, ten operas, eighteen violin concerti, four clarinet concerti, four oratorios and various works for small ensemble, chamber music and art songs. Spohr was the inventor of both the violin chinrest and the orchestral rehearsal mark. His output occupies a pivotal position between Classicism and Romanticism, but fell into obscurity following his death, when his music was rarely heard. The late 20th century saw a revival of interest in his oeuvre, especially in Europe.

        Commentaries on the Constitution and Laws of England, incorporated with the Political Text of the late J.L. De Lolme ..

      London, John Richards & Co., 1841 ('Third edition, revised and corrected to the present time'). Octavo, [ii] (title leaf), xviii, 476, civ (appendix and index) pages. Early half tan calf and marbled papered boards with a contrasting leather title-label on the spine; covers a little rubbed and scuffed, with the head of both hinges slightly cracked (but firm); endpapers and adjacent leaves offset (mainly from the leather turn-ins); minimal scattered light foxing; early marginal emphases in pencil and (rarely) in ink, in particular to the later sections relating to the institutions and processes of government; related annotations on several pages; overall an excellent copy. Western's apparent aim was to demonstrate the superiority of the English constitution over all other forms of government. In that context, the parochial provenance of this copy is hard to beat. The ownership signature of 'J.F. Burton, Adelaide 1850' appears at the head of the title page and on the front flyleaf (without the place-name). The latter is also signed in pencil 'J.H. Fisher' (James Hurtle Fisher), around which George Fife Angas has written 'Sept 21 1853. Presented by [JHF] to G.F. Angas'. The full name of George Fife Angas is also written there in pencil in what we recognize as a later secretarial hand, indicating (in our experience) that the book came originally from Angas's library. Sir James Hurtle Fisher (1790-1875) 'was one of the most important pioneers of South Australia': a lawyer, he was appointed first Resident Commissioner of South Australia, and arrived in the colony on the 'Buffalo' with the Governor's party. He eventually became a leader of the South Australian Bar (Australian Dictionary of Biography). Angas needs no introduction. We know little about Burton, other than that he was an Adelaide solicitor; he is mentioned as such occasionally in the local newspapers of the day.
