Tome premier (-deuxieme)

Bailli?re, 1840. 2 voll. in 8, pp. XII + 436; (4) + 528. Marm. Cfr. Foucault, Sorvegliare e punire, pp. 288; 310. Kress, C.5176. Einaudi, 2293.         Democracy in America [with] Democracy in America Part the Second

London: Saunders and Otley, 1840. First English language editions. Four octavo volumes (pages: 221 x 142mm) collating: xliv, 333, [1]; vii, 462; xv, 333; viii, 365 pp. Half titles in volumes one and two, folding map at the front of volume 2 (backed with linen), with colored outlines (as issued). 19th-century gilt-ruled 3/4 dark green morocco and marbled boards, raised spine bands, compartments ornamented in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Small amount of faint scattered foxing, else a lovely set internally. A rare set when complete with the map in volume two and with the first translation of the second part, often missing. We can find no complete set of the first English translation in the auction record and the last comparable copy we recall in the trade was with Bauman Rare Books in 2011 (priced at $38,000). An extremely rare and desirable set. The first English language edition of de Tocqueville's seminal work on American government, first printed the same year in Paris. De Tocqueville, a French aristocrat, visited America between 1831 and 1832, ostensibly to study the penal system, although his interest was considerably broader. It seems logical that France would look to America as a beacon of hope for a successful democracy. After France embraced the goals of equality and democracy in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution, it found itself first in a dictatorship under Napoleon and then in one constitutional monarchy after another during the years following. De Tocqueville's astute observation of several aspects of American society and culture provides an invaluable lens of foreign perspective on our young nation's political growth. Democracy in America was an immediate and sustained success. Almost from the beginning it enjoyed the reputation of being the most acute and perceptive discussion of the political and social life of the United States ever published. Whether perceived as a textbook of American political institutions, an investigation of society and culture, a probing of the psyche of the United States, or a study of the actions of modern democratic society, the book has maintained its place high within the pantheon of political writing. "No better study of a nation's institutions and culture than Tocqueville's Democracy in America has ever been written by a foreign observer; none perhaps as good." (The New York Times) HOWES T-278, 279. Sabin 96062, 96063. Clark III:111. Library of Congress: A Passion for Liberty, Alexis de Tocqueville on Democracy & Revolution (Washington, 1989).

AN APPEAL TO THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, IN FAVOR OF A BANKRUPT LAW. TO WHICH IS ANNEXED THE BILL THAT PASSED THE SENATE.

[New York: Narine & Cos, 1840?]. [New York:: Narine & Cos,. 1840?]. 16pp, folded as issued. Lightly dusted and foxed, Good+ or so. The Jacksonian Stilwell was an important figure in the movement to abolish imprisonment for debt in New York. His sympathy with unfortunate debtors is evident in this pamphlet, a plea for a voluntary bankruptcy law, permitting debtors to gain a fresh start in life. Stilwell's arguments helped to enact the historic federal Bankruptcy Act of 1841 after unprecedented commercial failures during the Panic of 1837. It was the first to permit voluntary bankruptcies. The first Bankruptcy Act, enacted in 1800, was repealed in 1803. The 1800 law had authorized creditors to place the debtor in bankruptcy and seize his assets; but it had not allowed debtors to choose bankruptcy. The 1840 Bill, whose enactment Stilwell urges, passed the Senate but was tabled in the House. However, it was revived in the next Congress and passed in 1841. Only two years after its enactment, charges of corruption and profligate expenditures, and at least one lower court decision that the Act was unconstitutional, led to the Act's repeal. Not in Cohen, Sabin, or American Imprints. OCLC locates four copies under two accession numbers, as of October 2014.

ALS to Thomas Mitton, from Devonshire Terrace, Sunday 18th October. 'It is mortal long and complicated...'

[1840] 27 lines on first & second side of folded 8vo sheet. With addressed envelope. Not in Pilgrim Letters or either addenda. Primarily about the sales and remaining stock of Master Humphrey's Clock. 'I am very sorry I had made an engagement last Monday evening, and could not very well break it ... I have the clock account, and you shall see it. It is mortal long and complicated ...' Dickens records the total receipts of c.£10,600 and the total expenditure 'including the cost of the stock' ... of c.£10,300 leaving 'Balance in money now in hand in favor of the partners, £340.6.0.!!!!!!!!!' '... all the profit is spent in stock, and this half year I'm half master of God knows how many thousand reams of printed paper...' WITH: An envelope addressed to Mitton at Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane postmarked 'JA 9 1841'(?). Thomas Mitton, 1812-1878, was a close early friend of Dickens who worked together for a short time as clerks in Lincoln's Inn. Dickens provided surety for Mitton to buy into a practice in 1838 and he remained Dickens's solicitor for the next twenty years. Dickens had expected Master Humphrey (April 1840-December 1841) to make between £10,000 and £11,000 and entered into a partnership with Chapman and Hall. The high cost of the numerous woodcuts meant much smaller profits - some £1,068 for Dickens - on top of his stipend of £50 per part.

Stockholm, 3. XI. 1840. - Umfang- und inhaltsreicher Brief an den österr. Chemiker u.

Bruxelles, M. Hayez, 1840. Large 4to (29.1 x 22.0 cm). 173 pp., 12 engraved plates of which six finely hand-coloured (double suite). Contemporary blue limp leather, blue printed label with hand-written title on front wrapper.= Very rare and important publication on Mediterranean molluscs by the Belgian malacologist François Joseph Cantraine (1801-1863), with the plates in double suite, hand-coloured, and plain. With the descriptions of new species. The work is particularly important for its fine illustrations of living animals and shells of often new or poorly known species (e.g. Pteropoda and Nudibranchia, but also Helicidae). Even the smaller species are figured in great detail. We have never seen a double suite copy before. Usually this work is dated as from 1841, perhaps because volume 13 of the Mémoires of the Académie royale in Brussels were published in that year. This, however, is an offprint, dated 1840, and there is no reason to doubt that it was published in that year. Some plate references, e.g. to plate 13, are incorrect. Lacks the single page "Table alphabetique". Spine cover slightly chipped, cancellation stamp over old stamp on title page, some light, marginal spots to a few plates. Colouring very good. Caprotti, p. 15; Not in Nissen.

Geka kihai zufu [trans.: Illustrations of Surgical Cases]

81 woodcut illus., all finely colored by hand and 42 folding flaps. 60 folding leaves. 8vo, later wrappers (rather wormed, carefully & sensitively repaired), new stitching. Japan: 1840. First edition of this extremely rare and important book in the history of anesthesiology and surgery; this work contains what we believe are the oldest printed illustrations of surgery under general anesthesia and the first illustrations of an anesthesiologist. These illustrations show resection of a testicular tumor and intrauterine hematoma. A caption (written in Chinese) in each illustration clearly states surgery was performed under general anesthesia using mafutsuto. Seishu Hanaoka was the world's first surgeon on record to successfully perform surgery under general anesthesia. On 13 October 1804, Hanaoka successfully operated on Aiya Kan, a 60-year-old woman, to remove breast cancer under Mafutsusan general anesthesia. This surgery is the world's earliest known verified case of surgery under anesthesia. Following the success of his surgeries under anesthesia, Hanaoka became well-known throughout Japan. He established a private medical school where he trained more than 1000 students, including Keishu Kamada (1794-1854). Because Hanaoka did not write any books, the writings of Kamada are important sources for investigating his master's techniques of anesthesiology. Following five years of study with Hanaoka, Gendai returned to his native island of Shikoku in southwestern Japan, where he became known as Japan's best surgeon. He performed many plastic, orthopedic, and pediatric surgical procedures and was especially regarded for treating breast cancer. "Gendai Kamada was an outstanding pupil of Seishu Hanaoka, and from the perspective of the history of anesthesiology, three of his achievements had a global impact… "The first achievement was writing of Mafutsuto-ron in 1839. Mafutsuto-ron gives detailed descriptions of the indications and contraindications for anesthesia, anesthetic procedures using Mafutsuto, signs of adequate depth of anesthesia with Mafutsuto, methods of intraoperative and postoperative anesthetic management, and other practices drawn from clinical experience. In 1839, when Mafutsuto-ron was written, no technique for using general anesthesia had been developed in Europe or the United States. In the West, the textbook of general anesthesia was first described by Snow in 1847. Thus, Mafutsuto-ron is the first existing textbook of clinical anesthesiology in the world… "Gendai's second achievement was to create one of the oldest illustrations of surgery under general anesthesia in the world. These illustrations are included in Gekakihai-zufu (Illustrations of Surgical Cases), a casebook of surgical treatment he published in 1840. This casebook consists of a preface, a table of consequences, cases, and 65 illustrations [they mean case histories]. It explains the pathology of diseases and therapeutic procedures, such as resection of tumors and repair after trauma, in concise classical Chinese. Although most of the illustrations in this casebook depict patients undergoing surgery, two illustrations depict an entire surgical operation, showing the patient and surgeons together. The latter illustrations clearly depict the conditions in which general anesthesia with Mafutsuto was administered at the time. These two illustrations, showing how surgery was performed under general anesthesia in the 1830s, seem to be among the oldest illustrations of general anesthesia in the world… "Gendai's third great achievement was to train the world's second anesthesiologist. Gendai and Seishu were not anesthesiologists, because they performed surgery on the patients they anesthetized. However, Gendai recognized the importance of anesthesiologists. The two illustrations in Gekakihai-zufu each show a physician taking the pulse of a patient while observing his whole body. Such physicians were responsible for administering anesthesia and observing the general condition of the patient. Because the physicians in these two illustrations wore similar clothes and have close-cropped heads, they appear to be two depictions of the same individual. Because Gendai was performing the surgery, this physician is assumed to be Gensei Matsuoka, who was a pupil of Gendai and a physician with a particular talent for anesthesia. Gensei played a critical role in Gendai's writings. In the 1830s, Gendai performed various surgical procedures with Gensei as the anesthesiologist."-Dote et al., "Two Japanese Pioneers in Anesthesiology: Seishu Hanaoka and Gendai Kamada" in Journal of Anesthesia History, Vol. 3 (2017), pp. 19-23. The illustrations in this work are remarkable. There are 81 vividly handcolored woodcuts depicting surgical operations. Even more remarkably, there are 42 folding flaps over the woodcuts, showing the "before" and "after" of surgical procedures. Kamada provides in the text the symptoms, treatments, descriptions of each patient, and length of illness for all 65 case histories. This book is of the utmost rarity; there is no copy outside of Japan and we can only locate two copies in Japan (Kyushu University and Iwasaki Bunko in Tokyo).
