        Optical miniatures.

France or Germany c 1840 - Five bisque porcelain lithophane plates, each 5.2 x 4.1 cm. A collection of rare lithophane plates showing various erotic subjects. Lithophanes are thin panels of glazed, translucent china that, when a strong light shines through from the back side, transform the relief into a delicate toned chiaroscuro scene, similar to a mezzotint. The process was invented by Baron de Bourgoing (1791–1834), who patented it in Paris in 1827. They were designed to be hung in windows or displayed before candle or firelight and were later adapted to lamp shades. Atypical examples of a process that generally featured religious themes, four of these lithophanes show a male and female coupling and a fifth features a woman with three members of the infantry. They are dressed from different time periods and, aside from one clerical interior, are in domestic, ordinary settings.

'Glenelg, Holdfast Bay, 1840'. An original watercolour on paper (225 x 340 mm, signed in the bottom right-hand corner 'B Travers Solly'); one short closed tear to a blank portion near the bottom lefthand corner; in excellent condition, archivally mounted ready for framing

A very rare early topographical view of the birthplace of the colony of South Australia. The artist is looking out to sea across the small settlement, taking in a handful of cottages or fishermen's huts, perhaps the 'Custom-house', a post-and-rail paddock, a solid and solitary tree stump, a lone pedestrian, a beached hulk, and on the water, a sailing ship making its departure. There is not much colour in the scene - perhaps there never was, especially to a new chum, if a contemporary account that notes 'The summer of 1840 set in unusually hot and trying' can be relied upon ('Memories of Early Days in South Australia', 1882). Nothing much has changed on that score ... The invaluable 'Dictionary of Australian Artists. Painters, Sketchers, Photographers and Engravers to 1870', edited by Joan Kerr, contains half a page on Solly. The following note incorporates and expands on that information. The artist arrived in South Australia on the 'Brightman' on 13 December 1840 (which narrows the period when this watercolour was produced to within about a fortnight). In March 1856 he married Jane Isabella Watts, the youngest daughter of the postmaster-general of South Australia (not to be confused with her namesake, whose anonymous memoir is quoted above). He then relocated to Tasmania, where he was assistant colonial secretary from 1857 to 1894. 'No information survives about Solly's training as an artist, but in his 1856 account of his family he refers to the artistic talent of his three sisters. As he was the youngest child, it is possible that his sisters influenced his artistic development.... His earliest drawings date from the late 1830s, when he was aged about nineteen, and continue until about 1894, when he was seventy-four. They are mainly landscapes, in pen, pencil or watercolour'. (The dictionary also contains an entry for one of the sisters, Amelia Solly [1811-1902]). Benjamin Solly's work is rarely encountered, and material such as this item, produced within days of his arrival in the fledgling colony of South Australia as a 20-year old immigrant, is an exciting discovery worthy of note.

Physiologie du Gout . Notice biographique par Alph. Karr.

Paris Gabriel de Gonet s 1840 - 8vo., xxiii, 416pp., engraved frontispiece and seven engraved plates by Bertall, illustrated title-page vignette, numerous wood-engravings in the text, original pictorial gilt blind-stamped black cloth, all edges gilt, a very attractive copy. Never out of print, in a series of meditations that owe something to Montaigne's Essays, and have the discursive rhythm of an age of leisured reading and a confident pursuit of educated pleasures, Brillat-Savarin discourses on the pleasures of the table, which he considers a science. The simplest meal satisfied Brillat-Savarin, as long as it was executed with artistry. The father of low-carbohydrate diet, Brillat-Savarin considered sugar and white flour to be the cause of obesity. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Oriental Courtyard Scene.

1840 - Watercolour and gouache on paper (26 x 12 cm), signed "Eug. Flandin" lower left corner, mounted at edges onto a contemporary ink-ruled support sheet, this covered by a later gilt slip and silk-faced mount, framed and glazed (53.5 x 45.5 cm). The scene depicts a colonnaded inner courtyard of a complex of old buildings, the main focus on a relatively short, but distinctive, octagonal tower or minaret, with the dome of a mosque visible beyond. Eugene Napoleon Flandin (1803-1876), was an orientalist painter who studied under Horace Vernet. In 1840, he was sent on a mission to Persia in order to gather information on the evolution of the country under the reign of Mohammad Chah Qadjar. Accompanied by the architect and painter Pascal Coste, they created a a pictorial record of the ancient and modern monuments throughout modern day Iran, Syria and Turkey. They visited Hamadan, Ispahan, ancient Persepolis, then finally Mossoul, and Constantinople. Upon their return they compiled an album of six volumes entitled Voyage en Perse. Flandin returned to the Middle East in 1844, this time in Mesopotamia. He then published another album of his Middle East travels, l'Orient, in 1856 in four volumes. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, obtaining a second place medal in 1837. He was decorated with the cross of the Legion of Honour in 1842. His works have been displayed in museums in Auch, Caen, Lille, Marseille, La Roche-sur-Yon, Rouen and Versailles. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Album of ink drawings.

Canton s 1840 - Landscape quarto (27 x 29 cm). 118 ink drawings, each drawing on one side of fine double-folded paper with manuscript caption in English; several small marginal tears, some spotting to one page. Contemporary pink wrappers; with tears and marginal losses. Fine collection of original drawings showing Chinese ceremonies, scenes from the Imperial court, portraits of Chinese nobility, musical instruments, traders and craftspeople, each captioned in English. In the mid XVIII century the Emperor Qianlong implemented the Canton System (1757–1842) in China closing the ports across the country to focus all trade on the southern port of Guangzhou. The Pearl River delta region then became the centre for China's commerce and export industry, which gave a push to the development of an artisan industry. Numerous craftspersons and artists in Canton were commissioned to produce various artworks for the European market. They "depicted those phases of Chinese life which fascinated the Westerner but defied descriptions to friends and family at home. Before the advent of the camera, this medium played an extremely vital role in revealing Oriental culture to the West." (Crossman, The China Trade, 1972). First French edition. Rare on the market: we could not trace any copy at auction in the last 35 years. It contains the same illustrations and map (re-engraved) as the first edition, published in Russian in only 400 copies just 8 years earlier. One of the founders of the Russian Geographical Society, Liovshin (1798-1879) based his work on the material collected during his service at the Orenburg Border Commission in 1820-22. The author was much praised for his ability to combine scientific research with knowledge acquired directly from interaction with local people. Shokan Valikhanov (1835-65), another great Kazakh historian whose monument stands today in front of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences in Almaty, called him the "Herodot of the Kazakh steppes". Liovshin's groundbreaking work, first published partially by Pushkin himself, covers the geography, history and ethnicity of nowadays Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tadjikistan. Thanks to the extent of the work, its detailed researches and its structured method, it became the first comprehensive overview of the socio-political and ethnic Kazakh system. Liovshin extensively analysed most of the available Russian and foreign sources containing ethno-historical records of Kazakhs, and used in his work only information the validity of which he could prove. The large folding Carte du pays occupé par les Kirghiz-Kazaks ou Kirghiz-Kaïssaks et du Turkestan is a rare depiction of land included between, in the North, Orenburg and Omsk and, in the South Bukhara and Samarkand. Still in Soviet times, researchers such as the Kazakh ethnologist Edige Masanov (1926-65) considered it to be the most fundamental source for research of the Kazakh ethnography and in many cases the only one.         Narrative of the campaign of the army of the Indus, in Sind and Kaubool, in 1838-9.

London Bentley 1840 - First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., x, 291; vii, [iii], 307pp., 6 lithograph plates (light spotting), 2 illustrations in the text, original mauve blindstamped cloth gilt, light wear, an excellent example. A scarce account of the opening salvo in the Great Game, when 21,000 British troops set out to take Kabul from the Punjab, in what was to become the first Anglo-Afghan War. The author was a surgeon in the East India Medical Service which he entered in 1810. The work is based on letters home to relatives. The book does not pretend to be an authoritative account of British policy in that part of the world and official attitudes towards Dost Mohomed and Runjet Sing, but is rather a careful first-hand record of the journey, supplemented by gossip from the Staff mess-parties (from the preface).       Pair of Lithographs, each mounted upon contemporary linen (Poor condition, but with most attributes still present; both contemporarily trimmed on both narrow sides with notable loss to printed area; both sheets foxed, more pronounced on view sheet; view sheet with some minor abrasions to printed area and stained on both narrow ends), both 50.5 x 62 cm (20 x 24.5 inches). - London: Eden & Co. for Dean & Munday, [1840]. The only known surviving examples of a pair of fine nautical works by Captain Edward Smith, R.N., being a large-format sea chart of the Levant, accompanied by a sheet of nautical views of the same coast, based on Smith’s reconnaissance of the coast aboard the yacht ‘Menai’ in the spring of 1840. - This is the only known surviving example of a pair of fine nautical works by Captain Edward Smith, R.N. that details the coast of the Levant from Jaffa (modern-day Israel), in the south, all the way past Haifa and Beirut, up to Iskenderun (Turkey). The pair includes an elegant sea chart of the entire coast and a sheet of views of major ports along the same. They are the result of a detailed and insightful naval reconnaissance of the coasts of the Levant conducted in May-June 1840 by Smith, aboard the Menai, the private yacht of the famous traveller and patron of the arts and sciences, Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere. The present chart and sheet of views were meant to accompany (but where separately published from) Smith’s written navigation guide for the Levant, Sailing Directions for the Coast of Syria, from Ancient Joppa to the Gulf of Iskenderoon, To accompany Chart and Views of the Coast (London: Eden & Co., 1840), which makes ample reference to the chart and views (book not present here). Both the chart and sheet of views are beautifully designed and lithographed, in an elegant Late Georgian style, made before the busyness of the Victorian motif came into vogue. Referring to the sea chart, the main map, running down the left side of the sheet, presents the coast of the Levant, from a southward-orientated perspective, with Jaffa at the top (which is here largely trimmed away), and then following the shore all the way to the Gulf of Iskenderun (the northern extremities of which are trimmed way). Every major port and permanent feature (ex. Mount Carmel) is marked along the coasts, providing a fine projection. The left side of the sheet features five fine inset chats of the harbours of ‘Tripoli’; ‘Sidon’; ‘Tyre’; ‘Kaifa’ (Haifia) and ‘Beirout’ (Beirut). All of the harbour plans are quite detailed and feature numerous bathymetric soundings, nautical hazards, as well as some details with respects to the ancient walled port cities themselves, along with aspects of the surrounding countryside (ex. The ‘Mulberry [silk] Plantations’ above Beirut). Additionally, within the interior of the main map is a series of four mariners’ profile views of the coast. The sheet of views features seven attractive vignettes of major ports along the Levantine coast. The upper register of the sheet is dominated by the view of the ‘Bay of Acre From Cape Carmel to Cape Blanco’, depicting what is now known as the Bay of Haifa, extending from the Haifa to Akko, considered to be the best natural harbour in the eastern Mediterranean. The far right side of the sheet features the ‘View at the Back of Beirout’ and ‘Mount Carmel’, the latter being of the Biblically famous mountain that backs the city of Haifa. The centre register features views of the Lebanese ports of ‘Ancient Sidon’ and ‘Ancient Tyre. The lower register contains the view of ‘St. Georges’ Bay & Kahl El Salif N.E. of Beirout’, which features interesting renderings of ‘Mt. Lebanon’ and ‘Mulberry Plantations’; and a view of ‘Beirout’, depicting the bustling port city. It is important to note that small parts of the views along both the right and left sides of the sheet have been trimmed away. Captain Edward Smith Charts the Coasts of the Levant - From the period spanning the Napoleonic Wars up to 1840, the Levant, the far eastern coasts of the Mediterranean (incorporating modern Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey’s Gulf of Iskenderun), was visited by numerous British and French naval ships, as well as countless Western merchant marine vessels. This had resulted in some fine charts of specific ports; however, this long coastline had yet to be systematic

THEATRE PLAYBILL: THEATRE, COVENTRY.The Easter Week. The Celebrated Distin Family.

Broadside. Letterpress on yellow paper (Very Good, soft folds, tiny holes in left margin) 49,5 x 19 cm (19.5 x 7.5 inches). - Coventry: Charles A. N. Rollason, Smithford-Streer 1840. A rare playbill from the Coventry Theatre, presenting The Celebrated Distin family, a famous family of musicians, who played a vital role in popularization of Saxhorns and brass music in England and the United States, with a major influence on the American Civil War bands. - This is a rare early illustrated playbill for theatre performances on the evening of April 20th, 1840, in the Coventry Theatre, featuring The Celebrated Distin Family on various brass instruments, accompanied by Mrs. Distin on Piano and a singer Mademoiselle Schiller from Berlin. The lower part of the playbill lists 19 musical numbers performed that evening. The Distin Family consisted of a father John Distin, a former member of King George IV’s Household Band, and his four sons, George Frederick (1817–1848), Henry John (1819–1903),William Alfred (1822–1879), and Theodore (1823–1893), who performed on brass instruments. In the 1840s they became world famous for their modern music, played on a completely new instrument – the saxhorn. The saxhorn family was developed by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian musician and inventor, who later became famous for inventing saxophone, during the mid-to-late 1830s, and was not patented until 1845. Only a year before, in 1844, Sax met The Distin Family, at the time extremely famous touring English musicians, in Vienna by coincidence and the quintet agreed to try the new instrument. The Distin Family was, thank to their musical talent and theatrical performance, widely responsible for instant popularisation of the saxhorn and brass music in popular culture. A German composer Heinrich Marschner wrote about the Distin Family in The Musical Gazette (vol. I, no. 14, pg. 107, Boston, August 3rd, 1846). "These artists use their splendid instruments (the saxhorns) with a most remarkable superiority; and I feel bound to testify that their execution really leaves nothing to be desired. An ensemble so perfect has never been heard. These five artists play as if they were but one man. To say how great, how profound was the impression which they produced upon the public, is an impossibility; during their entire concert, nothing like the slightest idea of criticism could enter the minds of their audience." In 1849 The Distin Family, or The Distins, as they were newly called, left for a tour of North America. The performances in New York, where they were supposed to appear in 40 shows, were a financial failure due to a Cholera epidemic, which scared away the audience. After returning to Europe, one of the sons, Henry Distin, founded his own successful instrumental manufacturing, still cooperating with Adolphe Sax. After selling the firm, what would later become the firm Boosey & Hawkes, he moved tot he United States in 1876, where he founded another musical company Henri Distin Manufacturing Company. The popularisation of the saxhorn instrument and the brass music through The Distin Family in 1840s and 1850s had a large influence on the United States and in 1860s the saxhorn became the most common brass instrument in American Civil War bands. Because of their influence on the popular music, especially in the North America, the life and itinerary of the Distin Family is well researched. This performance by The Distin Family is not recorded in contemporary literature (Ray Farr, The Distin Legacy: The Rise of the Brass Band in 19th-Century Britain, 2013. Distin Diaries) We could not find any records of this playbill in institutions worldwide.

(ed. 1, p. 795)" Haymaker & Schiller, Founders of Neurology, p. 508."We can regard him as the first clinical neurologist" Spillane, Doctrine of the Nerves, p. 289 279-89)."The first man to bring order and system to neurology was Moritz Heinrich Romberg (1795-1873), professor of pathology and director of the University Hospital in Berlin. (...)Romberg's work culminated in his classic text Lehrbuch der Nerverkankheiten des Menschen, which was the first systematic treatise in neurology and a milestone in the development of clinical neurology. (...) Romberg accepted the difference between the function of the anterior and posterior roots of the spinal cord und used this distinction in motor and sensory nerves as a basis for the division of his textbook into two sections, Neuroses of Sensibility and Neurosis of Motility. The first section describes abnormal sensory function - including pain, hyperesthesia and anesthesia - affecting various parts of the body the second section on motor disorders is separated into spasm, tremor and paralysis, and includes other motor symptoms that occur in neurological disease. Although localization of function and disease in the nervous system was not to be clarified for another twenty or thirty years, Romberg had made a significant step in this direction from the old classification of neurological disorders into merly palsy, apoplexy and epilepsy that had generally existed from Hippocrates to Cooke. In Romberg's sensory section there is a description of branchial and sciatic neuritis, peripheral neuritis and causalgia, neuromas, ciliary neuralgia, facial neuralgia, various forms of headache and other conditions recognized today. Romberg also described position sense, pointing out that Bell (1826) first directed attention to this, and saying of Bell that "his observations are as ingenious as they are conclusive". (...)The section on motor diseases contains a long description of muscular spasms, particularly those associated with breathing and talking, as well as presentations of chorea, tetanus, epilepsy, facial paralysis and his classic elucidation of tabes doralis. He recognized tabes as a distinct clinical entity and appropriated for it the designation tabes dorsalis. Not only did Romberg note the insecurity of stance and gait, but he also recognized the occurrence of amblyopia he even recorded that when the optic nerve is not involved, there is a change of the pupils of one or both eyes, consisting in contraction with loss of motion. L.C. McHenry: Garrison's History of Neurology 278.ff." Romberg inaugurated the modern era in the study of diseases of the nervous system.
