The Antiquarian Itinerary, Comprising Specimens of Architecture, Monastic, Castellated, and Domestic: with other Vestiges of Antiquity in Great Britain. Accompanied with Descriptions.

[printed by W. Wilson for] Wm. Clarke, J. Murray, S. Bagster, J.M. Richardson, and Sherwood and Co, London - 332 engraved plates and woodcuts in the text. First Edition. Seven volumes bound in three. 12mo. [156 x 105 x 123 mm]. Bound c.1840 in red goatskin, the covers with a gilt border of a thick and thin fillet and large arabesque foliate tools in the corners joined by a fillet. The spines divided into five panels by gilt tooled bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with geometric centres and arabesque corners, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, the turn-ins with a blind roll, bright green and gilt decorated endleaves, gilt edges. (Slightly rubbed). 1815- 1818. Light foxing to the plates but a very good copy. The binding would appear to date from about 1840, though it could be a few years earlier or later. There is an ink inscription on all three title-pages "W. J. Nash, Midford Castle, 1856". Midford Castle is the castellated Gothic tower to the south of Bath, built for Henry Disney Roebuck in c.1775 after a design by John Carter. The house was owned by the Conollys (a branch of the Castletown House clan) from 1810 until 1901. The set has been very carefully put together, with the seven volumes arranged into alphabetical order by county, with the volumes lettered on the spine A-G, H-O, P-Z. The contents leaves, normally found in vol.VII have been bound at the front. The page signatures show each volume containing sections taken from each of the original seven volumes, now arranged in a most convenient alphabetical sequence. Each of the three volumes has a title-page, taken from the original volumes I-III, and the redundant title-pages for volumes IV-VII were discarded by the binder as there would have been no logical place to insert them.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[The Case of the Honorable George Milner Stephen]

[Adelaide], with the colophon 'Robert Thomas & Co., Printers, Hindley Street', [circa 1840]. Octavo, 140 pages. Later half calf; mild signs of use; a very good copy. The first leaf is signed 'B'; the intended preliminaries (including the title page) are not present and were most likely never printed. The subject of the book is the 1839 libel action, counter-action for wilful and corrupt perjury, and the counter-counter-action for libel involving George Milner Stephen, South Australian Attorney-General and Crown Solicitor. The actions stemmed from Stephen's speculative land dealings in early 1839, and this lengthy account is drawn from the Supreme Court records, the Government Gazette, and newspapers of the day (from May-September that year). Robert Thomas, Government Printer and newspaper proprietor, was the successful defendant in the second libel case. This fascinating exposé was almost certainly printed in at most a mere handful of copies and never released for general distribution. It appears to be unrecorded.

Joseph Holt. From an original picture in the possession of Sir William Betham. Painted in 1798

Day & Haghe, London 1840 - Lithograph, 195 mm x 126 mm (leaf size). Portrait of Joseph Holt (1756-1826), one of the most prominent Irish convicts of the early years of settlement at Sydney Cove.In 1798 Holt joined a band of rebels engaged in six months of guerrilla conflict near Dublin, but was captured in November of that year and sentenced to transportation. Aboard the convict transport Minerva Holt won the respect of Lieutenant William Cox (the man who oversaw the building of the road across the Blue Mountains) and became manager of his farms at Dundas and Canterbury upon their arrival. Despite displaying loyalty and great intelligence, Holt's seditious past proved a terrible burden: in September 1800 he was accused of treason and later acquitted by Governor King. Again in 1804 he was falsely accused of involvement in the rebellion at Castle Hill and sent to Norfolk Island, returning to Sydney two years later to work land he had purchased while working for Cox. Holt wisely - or luckily - avoided involvement in the Rum Rebellion, despite having earlier been charged with owning a still upon his return from Norfolk Island).Joseph Holt was officially pardoned in January 1811 and sailed for Britain on the Isabella which foundered near the Falklands, delaying his return till 1814. He regretted leaving New South Wales despite the prejudice he encountered as an Irish political prisoner.

Liverpool Jabez Vale n.d. circa 1840 - Broadside (31 x 29.5 cm. approx), printed in blue ink with a large pictorial vignette surrounded by an ornamental border. Rare Liverpool printed broadside. The text consists of a quote from Lord Byron followed by a nineteen-line text praising the city and giving details of its topography and features of interest. Nanking porcelain was a major export item and the city would have been of great interest to people in the West. The blue on white of the broadside presumably reflects the distinctive blue-and-white porcelain itself.

[Hand-Colored] A Picturesque Tour along the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne with illustrations of the scenes of remarkable events, and of popular traditions [Rheingegenden von Mainz bis Cölln]

London: R. Ackermann, 1820 [i.e. c. 1840]. Translated from the German by John Black, from the Wiesbaden edition of 1819, Die Rheingegenden von Mainz bis Cölln. First English Edition, later issue, with all plates numbered, on J. Whatman Turkey Mill paper watermarked 1839. (Catalog descriptions of this title often fail to mention watermarked dates on the paper; even when the title page correctly specifies first edition, dates of the plates can vary widely from copy to copy: the printing plates were not re-engraved, but later impressions were pulled.) Imperial 4to: xiv,[2],178pp, with 24 "highly finished" (Hardie) hand-colored plates (by R. Havell, T. Sutherland and others after M. Schuetz) and folding map hand-colored in outline, engraved by Bartlett. Very handsomely bound in three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards, spine richly gilt in six compartments (two of which lettered in gilt), all edges marbled, marbled end papers, linen slipcase. A splendid, wide-margined example, occasional offsetting from plates to facing text (original tissue guards browned but plates virtually pristine), else clean, fresh and bright, with beautifully colored aquatints. Abbey (Travel) 217. Tooley 234. Graesse III, 59. Hardie, pp. 107-08. Prideaux, p. 337. ¶ Originally issued in six monthly parts in wrappers. One of the most beautiful of all view books, with plates depicting, among other locales, Bornhofen, the Mice Tower, Pfalz Castle, the salmon-fishery at Lurley, and Godesberg and the Seven Hills. Hardie, typically contrary, comments, "Though finely produced, the volume fails to rise above the ordinary type of show-book for a drawing room. . . . the subjects are too German in character, too pretty, too lacking in breadth and atmosphere. The best, perhaps, is the view of Thurnberg, where the square turreted castle standing high above the Rhine lends its own dignity to the drawing." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Optical miniatures.

France or Germany c 1840 - Five bisque porcelain lithophane plates, each 5.2 x 4.1 cm. A collection of rare lithophane plates showing various erotic subjects. Lithophanes are thin panels of glazed, translucent china that, when a strong light shines through from the back side, transform the relief into a delicate toned chiaroscuro scene, similar to a mezzotint. The process was invented by Baron de Bourgoing (1791–1834), who patented it in Paris in 1827. They were designed to be hung in windows or displayed before candle or firelight and were later adapted to lamp shades. Atypical examples of a process that generally featured religious themes, four of these lithophanes show a male and female coupling and a fifth features a woman with three members of the infantry. They are dressed from different time periods and, aside from one clerical interior, are in domestic, ordinary settings.

'Glenelg, Holdfast Bay, 1840'. An original watercolour on paper (225 x 340 mm, signed in the bottom right-hand corner 'B Travers Solly'); one short closed tear to a blank portion near the bottom lefthand corner; in excellent condition, archivally mounted ready for framing

A very rare early topographical view of the birthplace of the colony of South Australia. The artist is looking out to sea across the small settlement, taking in a handful of cottages or fishermen's huts, perhaps the 'Custom-house', a post-and-rail paddock, a solid and solitary tree stump, a lone pedestrian, a beached hulk, and on the water, a sailing ship making its departure. There is not much colour in the scene - perhaps there never was, especially to a new chum, if a contemporary account that notes 'The summer of 1840 set in unusually hot and trying' can be relied upon ('Memories of Early Days in South Australia', 1882). Nothing much has changed on that score ... The invaluable 'Dictionary of Australian Artists. Painters, Sketchers, Photographers and Engravers to 1870', edited by Joan Kerr, contains half a page on Solly. The following note incorporates and expands on that information. The artist arrived in South Australia on the 'Brightman' on 13 December 1840 (which narrows the period when this watercolour was produced to within about a fortnight). In March 1856 he married Jane Isabella Watts, the youngest daughter of the postmaster-general of South Australia (not to be confused with her namesake, whose anonymous memoir is quoted above). He then relocated to Tasmania, where he was assistant colonial secretary from 1857 to 1894. 'No information survives about Solly's training as an artist, but in his 1856 account of his family he refers to the artistic talent of his three sisters. As he was the youngest child, it is possible that his sisters influenced his artistic development.... His earliest drawings date from the late 1830s, when he was aged about nineteen, and continue until about 1894, when he was seventy-four. They are mainly landscapes, in pen, pencil or watercolour'. (The dictionary also contains an entry for one of the sisters, Amelia Solly [1811-1902]). Benjamin Solly's work is rarely encountered, and material such as this item, produced within days of his arrival in the fledgling colony of South Australia as a 20-year old immigrant, is an exciting discovery worthy of note.

Physiologie du Gout . Notice biographique par Alph. Karr.

Paris Gabriel de Gonet s 1840 - 8vo., xxiii, 416pp., engraved frontispiece and seven engraved plates by Bertall, illustrated title-page vignette, numerous wood-engravings in the text, original pictorial gilt blind-stamped black cloth, all edges gilt, a very attractive copy. Never out of print, in a series of meditations that owe something to Montaigne's Essays, and have the discursive rhythm of an age of leisured reading and a confident pursuit of educated pleasures, Brillat-Savarin discourses on the pleasures of the table, which he considers a science. The simplest meal satisfied Brillat-Savarin, as long as it was executed with artistry. The father of low-carbohydrate diet, Brillat-Savarin considered sugar and white flour to be the cause of obesity. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Oriental Courtyard Scene.

1840 - Watercolour and gouache on paper (26 x 12 cm), signed "Eug. Flandin" lower left corner, mounted at edges onto a contemporary ink-ruled support sheet, this covered by a later gilt slip and silk-faced mount, framed and glazed (53.5 x 45.5 cm). The scene depicts a colonnaded inner courtyard of a complex of old buildings, the main focus on a relatively short, but distinctive, octagonal tower or minaret, with the dome of a mosque visible beyond. Eugene Napoleon Flandin (1803-1876), was an orientalist painter who studied under Horace Vernet. In 1840, he was sent on a mission to Persia in order to gather information on the evolution of the country under the reign of Mohammad Chah Qadjar. Accompanied by the architect and painter Pascal Coste, they created a a pictorial record of the ancient and modern monuments throughout modern day Iran, Syria and Turkey. They visited Hamadan, Ispahan, ancient Persepolis, then finally Mossoul, and Constantinople. Upon their return they compiled an album of six volumes entitled Voyage en Perse. Flandin returned to the Middle East in 1844, this time in Mesopotamia. He then published another album of his Middle East travels, l'Orient, in 1856 in four volumes. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, obtaining a second place medal in 1837. He was decorated with the cross of the Legion of Honour in 1842. His works have been displayed in museums in Auch, Caen, Lille, Marseille, La Roche-sur-Yon, Rouen and Versailles. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Monreal 1840.

MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK With Illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne

London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-1841.. Large 12mo, three volumes; pp. [i-v] vi [misnumbered "iv"] [vii-viii] [1] 2-306; [i-v] vi [1] 2-306; [i-v] vi [1] 2-426, three frontispieces, 170 woodcut illustrations and 25 decorative initials, most drawn by H. K. Browne, mid-nineteenth-century three-quarter brown leather and marbled boards, spine richly tooled in blind, with brown leather title and number pieces, brown coated endpapers. First edition. MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was a weekly magazine Dickens intended as a flexible framework for his fiction and other writing in more frequently published units. Circulation fell quickly and a serial, THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP, began in the fourth issue. BARNABY RUDGE followed and, upon completion of that serial (a total of 88 weekly parts), Dickens returned to the monthly parts format. This is an fairly early copy of the three volume form with the most of the errors called for by Smith. Smith 6. Leather rubbed and scuffed at edges, edges of text block a bit darkened, several stains on page 13 of volume one, minimal scattered foxing, illustrations generally quite clean and sharp, a sound, attractive copy.
