The Ettrick Shepherd's Poetical Works & The Ettrick Shepherd's Tales and Sketches

Glasgow: Blackie and Sons, 1840. Hardcover. Very Good. Two complete sets of five and six volumes, respectively. Early printing of the sets but not the first as per Garside and Hughes' "James Hoggâ??s Tales and Sketches and the Glasgow Number Trade." Former owner's contemporary boar's head bookplates on all pastedowns. Seven numbered pages of ads at rear volume of Tales Vol. VI not present; otherwise textually complete. Some foxing to plates, a few hinges starting. Vol. I of Tales has slight splitting of cloth near tail. Tissue guards appear to all be present. Here it is the fifth volume of Tales, "Memoirs and Confessions of a Fanatic.

Le Marabout "Beraldi assigns between 7000 and 8000 designs to Victor Adam [1801-1865]…A Parisian by birth, he remained in the capital all his life, but this did not prevent him from drawing negroes, Turks, Chinese, and other peoples all over the world in his Paris studio. He was famous, indeed, as a faiseur de bonshommes, that is to say a specialist in adding groups of small figures to the foreground of architectural or landscape drawings by other artists…His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 194). Jean Victor Adam (1801-1866) was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam, an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles, amongst which are, 'The Entry of the French into Mainz,' 'The Battle of Varroux,' 'The Taking of Menin, 'The Battle of Castiglione,' 'The Passage of the Cluse,' 'The Battle of Montebello,' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV., after the Battle of Coutras,' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri,' 'The Postillion,' 'The Vivandiere,' 'The Road to Poissy,' 'The Return from the Chase,' 'Horse-fair at Caen,' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity, till 1846, when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography, to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album, 'Views in the Environs of Paris,' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon,' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824, a second class medal in 1836, besides several others from Lille, Douai, and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866.

Quelques feuillets brunis. Très bel exemplaire. Rare. *****. In-8. [210 x 132 mm] Collation : XV, 214, (2) pp., 3 planches h.-t.         The Picture Alphabet.

Houndsditch: Bishop & Co., circa, 1840. Duodecimo, 12 pp. in total, woodcut illustrations throughout; original green printed wrappers, folded (not sewn) as issued. A delightful woodcut alphabet. Here are many favourites - the Fox, the Goose, and the Lamb - but where necessary, the publisher's evidently felt capable of stretching their young audience. Not only is K for Kangaroo, but there are more unusual inclusions such as I for Ibex, and even M for Mermaid. Sadly, inspiration only went so far; here, X is for the Letter X.The work also includes a child's ditty: "When school is done, g[o] home loiter not on the wa[y] / Come to school clean and play not by the way." Just lightly chipped at head of front.

London: H. Hooper, 1840. Slim octavo, 76 pp.; in modern red half morocco, from the Webster collection with his small stamp on the rear endpaper, bound without final blank noted by Ferguson. An important early speech to the House of Commons by the British MP and parliamentary reformer Sir William Molesworth, summarising and presenting his work on the Select Committee on Transportation to Parliament for the first time.Molesworth (1810-1855) had chaired the Select Committee on Transportation, which had published its important report only two years earlier in 1838. The report had particularly focussed on the growing discontent from free settlers in Australia, as well as investigating Norfolk Island and Port Arthur, and here the report's author presents a succinct overview of his findings. Title page a little worn. Very good.

Paris (?): n.p. n.d., ca. 1840? Four engraved handcolored scenes cut out, plus the front and the back, and positioned via paper bellows. The front board depicts the Arc du Carrousel but has three peep holes in it. Looking through the central peep hole one sees the Tuileries Gardens, going right up the Avenue des Champs-Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe, and with statues, people, horse-drawn carriages. The two side peep holes give different views. 5 by 7½ inches. When fully extended it is over 24 inches in length. Front panel with the 'peep holes' is soiled. At some time the bellows were neatly replaced. Overall, though, it is in very good condition, with the individual scenes in lovely condition. Very good.

A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body, Accompanied with Descriptions and Physiological, Pathological, and Surgical Observations.

Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, 1840. Hardcover. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Folio (428 x 274 mm). [28], 241 [1], xxxvi pp. Engraved title-page and 103 hand-colored engraved plates (numbered I to CI plus additional plates IX* and XXXII*). 19th-century three-quarter calf over marbled boards, spine with 6 raised bands tooled and ruled in gilt in compartments and with red gilt morocco lettering label (extremities slightly rubbed, rear hinge starting). Little marginal browning to text, very minor occasional thumbsoiling to plates, final few leaves of index a little foxed, annotations in pencil to 4 plates. Provenance: Library of Gerald I. Sugarman, MD. Overall, a fine and clean copy with good color. ----Heirs of Hippocrates 1436 (this edition); Waller 5950; Welllcome III, p.531; Cushing L313; Roberts & Tomlinson, The Fabric of the Body, pp 504-8. (all first edition). A later (second?) issue of this impressive and highly successful collaboration between anatomist John Lizars and his brother William Home Lizars, a talented artist and head of the publishing and engraving firm established by the brothers' father, Daniel Lizars (1754-1812). "Although it contains no new discoveries, this superb atlas is certainly one of the most elegant works of the nineteenth century." (Heirs of Hippocrates). The work was originally issued in 12 parts from 1822 to 1826. John Lizars studied under John Bell and later became a partner in Bell's anatomy school. The partnership with Bell was eventually dissolved but Lizars continued to teach on his own, and also maintained a private surgical practice. In 1825 Lizars became the first surgeon in Britain to perform an ovariotomy (see Garrison-M. 6026). In 1831 he was appointed professor of surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Lizars' System of Anatomical Plates was by far his most successful work, going through many editions; "the sale of the book in its various forms was reported to be immense" (Roberts & Tomlinson p 505). Lizars' fame as engraver led John James Audubon to engage Lizars to engrave the plates for the elephant folio Birds of America; however, after Lizars had engraved the first ten plates, he recommended to Audubon that this enormous project (requiring over 76,000 elephant folio hand-colored plates for the 175 copies in the edition) be turned over to Robert Havell in London. Lizars' atlas for his brother's System of Anatomical Plates represents the highest quality of artistic production available in Scotland at this date (Roberts & Tomlinson, The Fabric of the Body, pp 504-8). Very Good.

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations ... with a commentary by the author of "England and America".

London: Charles Knight, 1835-, 1840. Four volumes, duodecimo, each with engraved frontispieces of Smith, Ricardo and other eminent economists; each volume bearing ownership name 'C.M. Wakefield'; bindings show some wear and spine ends a little chipped yet a very good set in original blind decorated green publisher's cloth. A Wakefield family copy of this work to which Edward Gibbon Wakefield had provided a preface and commentary, a popular edition of Adam Smith's pivotal economic treatise. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography notes that by 1833 'Wakefield had become a confirmed disciple of Adam Smith and published an edited version of the Wealth of Nations, in four volumes, between 1835 and 1839. The extensive commentaries that accompany each chapter clearly outline his thinking as he sought to create a model post-enlightenment society.'The set comprises mixed editions in uniform publisher's cloth, with each volume bearing the manuscript owner's name 'C.M. Wakefield'. While this is evidently a family copy therefore, the initials do not correspond to any of his immediate family members. Given the emigration of several family members to New Zealand and Australia, the books may have belonged to a descendent living in the colonies, perhaps Clara Marie Wakefield, daughter of William Wakefield and Maria Sophia Emilie Schwass, born 1886 in Waimea East, Nelson, New Zealand; another possibility would be Clara Wakefield, born Melbourne 1864, daughter of Frank and Agnes Wakefield.

Autograph letter signed "A. Tamburini" to Louis Viardot, Director of the Théâtre Italien....

2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated February 8, 1840. In black ink. On stationery with Tamburini's monogram embossed at head of each leaf. With two round blindstamps of the Collection Viardot to upper and lower portion of first page. In French (with translation). Tamburini wishes Viardot had chosen Bellini's La straniera to allow him to show off the full extent of his skills. "I am charmed that you have chosen Il pirata for Mr. [Giovanni] Rubini's benefit; even though an artist like him has no need of a great role to shine, nevertheless it is always good to present oneself in this score which has place him above all known tenors. As for me, my role was written at the beginning of my career, and Bellini did not bother to slip in any aria; but he wrote La straniera to compensate me for it. Certainly you would do well, Sir, to give your artists the benefit of the scores they prefer. I would have also liked to be one of the ones selected." Creased at folds. Tamburini, a noted Italian baritone, created and/or premièred important roles in multiple operas by Bellini and Donizetti. Alongside famed tenor Giovanni Rubini (1794-1854), who originated Gualtiero, he created the role of Ernesto in Il pirata. As mentioned in the present letter, he created Valdeburgo in La straniera in 1829. Along with Rubini, Giulia Grisi (1811-1869), and Luigi Lablache (1794-1858) he was one of the famous 'Puritani quartet', who in 1835 created Bellini's opera. "In 1832 Tamburini appeared for the first time at the Théâtre Italien, Paris, singing Dandini (La Cenerentola), Assur (Semiramide), the title role of Mosè in Egitto and Valdeburgo. For a decade he sang alternately in London and Paris... His voice was rich, sweet, extensive and equal... and in every part of it entirely under control. His execution has never been exceeded... No one since himself has so thorough combined grandeur, accent, florid embellishment and solidity." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. French critic and translator Louis Viardot (1800-1883) was the director of the Théâtre Italien from 1838 until 1840, when he left his post following his marriage to the brilliant young singer, Pauline Garcia (1821-1910). Indeed their wedding took place in April 1840, shortly after this letter was written....

Voyage et Aventures de Lord Villiam Carisdall en Icarie, traduits de l'Anglais de Francis Adams par Th. Dufruit, Maitre de Langues.

Paris: Hippolyte Souverain, 1840. Two volumes in one, octavo, with both half-titles, red quarter morocco with decorated boards, gilt title and bands on spine. A handsome copy of the very rare first edition of this key work, an imaginary voyage to a radical socialist utopia, and the 'most popular nineteenth century exemplar' (Manuel) of its type. This first edition was actually printed in 1839 (not 1840 as appears on the title-page) in a very limited number of copies, apparently for private distribution by the author. The next year the work appeared under its more familiar title Voyage en Icarie, with Cabet's name on the title.Cabet (1788-1856), lawyer and revolutionary, was exiled from France for his political criticism. He travelled to England where he wrote this sprawling utopian adventure. It had an enormous impact, especially in the United States where it was taken as the manifesto for a series of short-lived socialist communities, most famously the Icarian city at Nauvoo, the old Mormon town in Illinois. Cabet himself was President of this society for some eight years, but like all of its successors, internal problems led to splintering and collapse.Nordhoff visited the Icaria experiment when he was researching The Communistic Societies, and felt pained witnessing the chasm between the 'comfort and elegance [Cabet] so glowingly described and the dreary poverty of the life which a few determined men and women have there chosen to follow'. The historian is bitter about Cabet himself - 'little more than a vain dreamer' - but touchingly sombre about the societies he helped found: 'I could not help feeling pity, if not for the men, yet for the women and children of the settlement, who have lived through all the penury and hardship of these many years'.This copy has the two characteristic printing errors of the early first edition (p. 402 misnumbered "378"; second title-page with "Villiam"). Some copies are known with a frontispiece, not present here. Some foxing; a handsome copy.

Bindemann.

Hamburg: J.G.Sn. Wichers, 1840. Octavo, 64pp; original printed dark blue wrappers; protective cloth case. An extremely rare La Pérouse fantasy, written in the best tradition of imaginary voyages, and following on from a number of fanciful narratives sparked by the mysterious disappearance of the French voyage. This fantasy actually appeared after Dillon's chance discovery of relics of the La Pérouse expedition on Vanikoro in 1826, news of which had been widely publicised by 1830: this odd book was thus very late in the genre. Ray Howgego has identified eight strands of La Pérouse fiction, of which this is the last (L17, see also L9 for summary and L10-L17 in Encyclopedia of Exploration [vol 5]: Invented and Apocryphal Narratives of Travel, Hordern House, 2013). As so often with imaginary voyages, there is an overt framing device in the form of the "famous" English physician Reidcliff's discovery of French manuscripts: "One of the more bizarre La Pérouse fantasies, [it] is allegedly based on the journal and manuscripts found by an Englishman, Dr Reidcliff, on 'Bricer Island' in 1835. The papers prove that the Boussole managed to sail away from Vanikoro, passing through the Bering Strait as far north as 82ºN where it was stopped by ice. La Pérouse then went on foot over the ice until, between 85º and 88ºN, he discovered a sunny paradise, full of fruit-tree orchards and unknown animals, in a land ruled over entirely by women. The sailors can find nothing more enticing, although they are always at risk of being taken by enormous cranes that transport their unsuspecting victims into an icy realm. Reidcliff discovers the papers of the expedition under mysterious circumstances, and transmits them to Europe... " (Howgego). Naturally, the protagonists have named their newly discovered sixth continent New France. The acknowledged "translator" Bindemann is almost certainly the author of the piece. It has been suggested that the jokey name of Dr Reidcliff could deliberately allude to the gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823). The book has been compared with Swift's Gulliver's Travels, no surprises there, but Gersdorf (in Repertorium der gesammten deutschen Literatur) has also more usefully pointed out similarities with Herschel's supposed moon discoveries (The "Great Moon Hoax" stories appeared in a series of articles in 1835).There were either two or three editions of the work, which first appeared under a different title (Letzte Schicksale und entedeckungen des franz. Schiffscaptains Grafen de La Perouse... ) in Hanau in 1837. This ran to 240 pp. but in its present Hamburg 1840 edition it has been reduced to 64 pp. by setting in very small type. The book was known to Ferguson only from the entries for the 1837 Hanau edition and this 1840 Hamburg version in Edward Weber Allen's Jean François Galaup De Lapérouse: A Check List (San Francisco, 1941). No copies of any edition were located for the Ferguson Addenda. It seems that the La Pérouse bibliographer McLaren, working from the same details, has confused the issue by adding an 1840 Hanau edition (also said to run to 64 pp., but with title matching the 1837 version), for which he cites only an Allen copy. There is no such copy in the Allen collection (now in the University of Washington library in Seattle) but the Allen copy of the present Hamburg 1840 edition with different title, which is indeed in the Allen Library today, is not cited by McLaren. McLaren does however locate a copy of the present edition in the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales. We have also located a copy in the Turnbull Library in New Zealand. Apparently no other copy of any version is held in Australia or New Zealand even now.(To confuse things further, WorldCat does cite one German library holding of a supposed 1840 Hanau edition, but the details are so sketchy that we believe this to have been another confusion between the two actual editions. The McLaren ghost entry and this WorldCat entry do not match.)In short we believe that there were just two editions: Hanau 1837 and the present Hamburg 1840 publication, both of which are very rare outside German library holdings. Some light staining throughout but essentially in good condition; the original wrappered binding is in good state having been preserved by a plain paper cover since discarded.

Seven Printed Legal Documents dealing with Land in the Estate of William Bligh.

London: Battye, Fisher & Sudlow, June 1838 - January, 1840. Seven printed legal documents, all individually stitch-sewn and folded into dockets, some legal marginalia in lead and blue pencil chiefly relating to the property "Copenhagen" A good set of printed legal documents relating to the sale of Bligh's properties in New South Wales. The sale, as these papers show, was first announced in 1838 for the benefit of his six living children. 'Bligh died intestate as to his estate in New South Wales. Probate was afterwards granted on the application of Charles Hallett, Proctor, and Felix Slade, Attorney. The share of Anne, described as a "lunatic", was vested in trustees for her benefit.' (George Mackaness, The Life of Vice-Admiral Bligh, pp. 340-1).Interestingly, one of the people granted power-of-attorney in Sydney with regards to this sale was Stuart Donaldson, later the first premier of New South Wales (his name is given in the printed text as "Thomas", but struck out with a manuscript correction). The first and most significant record present here is dated 22 June 1838, and gives details of the six children, beginning with William's and Elizabeth's eldest daughter Elizabeth. This also contains details of the five main properties at stake: Copenhagen (1000 acres in the Upper Nelson), his residence Camperdown (240 acres), the property known as Mount Betham (105 acres in Parramatta), and two properties on the Hawkesbury, Simpson's Farm (110 acres) and Tylor's Farm (two separate allotments, 170 acres in total). Also present here are two copies of the 30 November 1839 "Consent to Sale", one copy of the 29 July 1839 Act dealing with the sixth share of 'Ann Campbell Bligh, Spinster, a Lunatic', and three copies of the 24 January 1840 granting of power-of-attorney in New South Wales to Stuart Alexander Donaldson and John William Gosling, both of Sydney. It is distinctly possible that this suite of documents was originally held by someone involved in the processing of "Copenhagen" in particular, as the few manuscript notes in these printed documents deal chiefly with this property. A little dusted and a few tears, but very good.
