Eerste Metingen Met Den Mikrometer, Volbragt Op Het Observatorium Van s Rijks Hoogeschool Te Leiden

Leiden, H.W Hazenberg & en Comp 1840 - In-8° relié cartonnage éditeur bleu, X-128 pp. Une très grande planche hors-texte dépliante. Quelques rares rousseurs. 7. 11. Juni 1778 in Schevingen; † 1. Master Humphrey's Clock

1840. First Edition . DICKENS, Charles. Master Humphrey’s Clock by “Boz.” London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-41. Eighty-eight weekly parts. Quarto, original white pictorial wrappers. Housed in two custom half green morocco slipcases and chemises. $4800.First edition of Master Humphrey’s Clock in original weekly parts, including The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablôt Knight Browne (“Phiz”).When Dickens conceived of this work, he “had already written his preface to [Nickleby], in which for the first time he adopts that fond and agreeable tone towards his audience which he wished to continue” in Master Humphrey’s Clock, “his aim being, he said, that of ‘…one who wished their happiness, and contributed to their amusement.’ Here is Dickens as the man of feeling, uniting all his readership in a concord of affection and brotherhood” (Ackroyd, 291). “Dickens feared that his readers had become weary of stories in monthly issues on account of the lapse of time between the numbers. At the request of Chapman & Hall he outlined his plans partially in a letter… The new [weekly] venture began… with a circulation of 70,000, but this fell so quickly that the original project was abandoned and a [monthly] serial was begun in the fourth number under the well-known title of ‘The Old Curiosity Shop” (Eckel). This is the first of four original forms of publication of Master Humphrey’s Clock: (1) 88 weekly parts, (2) 20 monthly parts, (3) a three-volume edition (“triple-decker”), and (4) separately bound volumes of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. The weekly edition is the most scarce and desirable form. Each weekly number was issued on a Saturday as a single folded sheet of 16 pages (including wrappers), uncut and unopened. “Every fourth or fifth week, the text portion of the weekly numbers was collected, and made up into a single part, each being bound in green wrappers, and these constituted the monthly parts” (Hatton & Cleaver). Master Humphrey's Clock is the first time wood-engravings were used as a medium in place of etchings on steel. The cover illustrations were engraved by Landells from designs by George Cattermole. Hablôt K. Browne (“Phiz”) provided 154 of the 198 in-text illustrations. Browne illustrated this work as it was being written— not having the advantage of reading and analyzing the book before making his preliminary drawings (Hodnett, 110). Eckel, 67-70. Hatton & Cleaver, 163. Gimbel A49. From the library of John M. Schiff. Some modest occasional curling to fore edges, wrappers remarkably clean with only light soiling. An excellent copy of this rare first edition in original weekly parts.

The Magnetic Needle Telegraph on the Great Western Railway

: 1840 : London : Engraved broadside, image 306 x 205mm; plate mark 338 x 230mm; leaf 380 x 275mm. A little foxed and dust-soiled, with a few marginal tears. : An advertisement for public demonstrations of Cooke and Wheatstone's two-needle telegraph. The broadside advertises that 'This Instrument ... may be seen in Operation daily at the Paddington and Slough Stations on the Gt. Wn. Railway. Admission 1s.'William Fothergill Cooke (1806-1879) and Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) began their troubled partnership in 1837, quickly patenting their five-needle telegraph. The machine received its first convincing public demonstration in 1838, and improvements soon followed, the pair developing the double-needle system shown here, which, although requiring a skilled operator, provided faster signalling with lower installation costs. In 1839 the Great Western Railway commissioned them to build a telegraph line from Paddington to West Drayton station, a distance of 13.5 miles, and it was first publicly displayed in 1840.

Paris, J.-F. Brocard, 1840. - 12mo. XII, 244 pp. Contemporary gilt green half calf with marbled covers with giltstamped spine. Rare first edition of Proudhon's first and best-known publication ("What is Property? or, Investigations on the Principle of Law and Government"), in which he famously coined the phrase, "property is theft". By "property", Proudhon understood the sovereign right of property, "to use and abuse", which he contrasted with property as including the rights of liberty, equality, and security. Proudhon did not object to exclusive possession of labor-made wealth, but respected private property as an integral part of liberty, and insisted: "La propri

Bossoli dis." a sinistra, "F. Citterio inc." a destra, e degli editori "Ant. Vallardi e Ferd. Artaria". Assai rara a reperirsi in tali condizioni.

1840 - in Magdeburg, in German with transcription and translation, saying that "through our common friend Konzertmeister Müller", (Karl Friedrich, 1797-1873), he has "long known what vision and what inspired enthusiasm you devote to the direction of your Orchestral Society, and how much is due to this Society in improving artistic taste in Magdeburg", he is "truly honoured by your kind invitation, and would have been delighted to take it up", had he not "within a few days to undertake a long tour", but next year he hopes "to visit your native city again, and to fulfil your kind wish", ending with the assurance of his "especial respect and esteem", I side 4to and original address sheet with postmark, Berlin, 12th July (Transcription) Hochgeehrter Herr! Genehmigen Sie indeß geehrter Herr die Versicherungen der ausgezeichneten Hochachtung und Werthschätzung Ihres ergebenster Giacomo Meyerbeer (Translation) Through our common friend Konzertmeister Müller, I have long known what vision and what inspired enthusiasm you devote to the direction of your Orchestral Society, and how much is due to this Society in improving artistic taste in Magdeburg. I feel truly honoured by your kind invitation, and would have been delighted to take it up, had I not within a few days to undertake a long tour. - However next year I hope to visit your native city again, and then perhaps the opportunity will present itself to fulfil your kind wish Meanwhile accept, dear Sir, the assurance of the especial respect and esteem of your most devoted Giacomo Meyerbeer Berlin, 12th July 1840. Meyerbeer was the most frequently performed opera composer of the 19th century. A child prodigy pianist, he went on to study opera in Italy. His innovative works combined German technique with Italian style, and from about 1817 he used 'Giacomo' in place of 'Jacob'.as his first name. From 1824-1831 he was mostly in Berlin, then in Paris. His long and fruitful association with librettist Eugène Scribe, 1791-1861, began in 1827. His greatest work is 'Les Huguenots', 1836. In 1842 Friedrich Wilhelm IV appointed him Generalmusikdirektor in Berlin, and he divided his time between the two capitals. Karl Theodor Müller was Konzertmeister at Brunswick. Meyerbeer had seen him there as recently as the beginning of April, to oversee a production. Müller and his brothers Theodor (1799-1855), Franz (1808-1855) and August (1802-1875) were a famous String Quartet. In 1828 they give the first public performance of Beethoven's Op. 131. Franz Fesca, whose instrument was the violin, came from a family of musicians well known in Magdeburg. On the 18th March 1844, in Berlin, he played Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata, with Liszt at the piano.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Alaric at Rome. A Prize Poem, Recited in Rugby School, June XII, MDCCCXL

Rugby: Combe and Crossley, 1840. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's printed pink wrappers. Faint vertical crease at center, light edgewear. In custom red morocco pull-off case. First edition. 8vo. Arnold's Debut, Inscribed. The first edition of Matthew Arnold's first work, his Rugby School prize poem on the conquest of Rome by the Visigoth Alaric I in 410 AD. Unusual for a prize poem, the work was published anonymously and was not identified as Arnold's until Edmund Gosse made the attribution in 1888. One of the rarest literary debuts, of which Wise noted "Alaric at Rome holds a high place in the rank of modern poetical rarities." This copy inscribed on the front wrapper, "E. Armitage Esqr. from the Author." The recipient, Edward Armitage, was a fellow pupil at Rugby. Arnold had entered Rugby in 1837, where his father was headmaster. The only other copy known to bear an inscription by Arnold ("Miss Ward, 1840") is at the Morgan Library. It is difficult to take an accurate census of copies, as Wise muddied the waters with his facsimile - which he later passed off as genuine. OCLC locates 15 copies and ABPC lists two copies - one in 1979 at Christie's London, and the present copy. Ashley I, p. 8: "holds a high place in the rank of modern poetical rarities"; Hayward 255; Smart, p. 1. Provenance: Dr. J.B. Clemens of New Jersey (two typed letters to Clemens, as prospective purchaser of the book, from Luthur S. Livingston of Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, dated 17 August and 7 September, 1905, loosely inserted); sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 8 January 1945, lot 57 for $400; exhibited: Grolier Club (1950s exhibition card describing it as "the only presentation copy known"); sold, Halsted B. Vander Poel (Christie's, London March 3, 2004, lot 127)
