VERGNAUD, Narcisse
Folio: [6] pp. (half-title, title-page, and dedication to the author's brother Amand), 106 pp. WITH 24 plates numbered I-XXIV, all BEAUTIFULLY ILLUMINATED and heightened with gum arabic (half-title browned and foxed, some foxing to text leaves here and there). Contemporary French red glazed boards, red calf spine gilt (some wear to binding extremities). Preserved in a red cloth folding case. This is unquestionably the "snowy peak" of French Romantic books on landscape architecture. Our copy is exquisitely hand-colored, and is absolutely complete with all the "before-and-after" hinged overlays that when lifted reveal the landscape architect's changes, many of them dramatic. As the title indicates, this massive tome presents the art of creating gardens, and contains general precepts of the art and science of landscape architecture, developed through the aid of views, layouts, perspectives, and elevations. Furthermore, there are spectacular renderings of some of the most famous gardens of France and England, as they appeared in the pivotal decade of the 1830s.Among the 24 full-page hand-colored views are 9 double-page garden plans and 15 garden views. To four of the plates are affixed with hinged overlays - likewise beautifully hand-colored - superimposed on the engraving; this allows the viewer to study the projected changes. The work is divided into three parts: classification of gardens and influence of natural factors; labor, residential buildings, roads and various constructions; and finally … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOYS, THOMAS SHOTTER.
London. Thomas Boys. 1839. Folio 21 1/2 x 14 inches, publisher's half red morocco, rather worn. Colour printed lithograph title, dedication leaf and 25 colour printed lithograph plates with 27 images. Plates complete but most with spotting and one plate with a marginal repair. Plates printed by Hullmandel. A very beautiful book. Apart from the brilliance, sensitivity and technical mastery of the drawing on stone there is the great, and often underestimated, technical and artistic achievement of Hullmandel in making possible the transmission of such drawings, and in developing the cool, transparent, graduated tints, subtle in colouring, on which the unique effect of the book depends (Abbey)

Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a VERY rare FIRST ISSUE of the First one-volume Edition of Sketches by Boz, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's deluxe half Morocco, over marbled boards. To the spine are raised bands, finely tooled in gilt, and the title directly in gilt. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. This fine and rare volume also contains a genuine tipped-in cabinet photograph of Dickens (dating from around 1860), and a cut signature by Dickens. Externally the spine and boards are largely bright, with only occasional extraneous light wear, commensurate with age, in places. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled. The plates have the predictable odd spot in places. The publisher released volumes bound in cloth, half Morocco, and full Morocco. The cloth was the cheapest option for buyers of the time of printing, and then a price premium was put on the half Morocco and full Morocco. Owing to books then being the preserve of only the educated, relatively few were printed and bound, by comparison to volumes published into the C20th. The half Morocco and full Morocco being expensive at the time, resulted in fewer being produced, and therefore they are far more scarce than the original cloth is even now. Gimble, the esteemed Dickens bibliographer of the early C20th, and Kremers, who produced a fine work on Dickens a few years ago, both cover the publisher's half Morocco and full Morocco bindings in their works. We also have … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM
London: Charles Knight and Co, [1839?]-1843. There is a great deal in addition to Shakespeare contained in this, the first issued work by editor and publisher Charles Knight (1791-1873), later to gain fame for his "Half Hours" series, which made English history and literature more widely available to the common reader. DNB tells us that this son of a bookseller was already a bibliophile at 17. He obtained "an imperfect first folio edition of Shakespeare, which he made complete by printing the missing pages from a facsimile edition," and his love of Shakespeare never left him. According to DNB, "his first major project as an author took shape in 1837, when he resolved to produce [the present] pictorial edition of Shakespeare's works. . . . His background reading led to a deep interest in Shakespeare's life and the edition . . . was prefaced with a one-volume biography [the biography was actually printed in 1843, and appears as the last volume in our set]. Knight succeeded in contextualizing Shakespeare's life as no biographer except Nathan Drake had done." Our copy, in very appealing contemporary morocco, is an early printing of the complete plays (divided into "Histories," "Comedies," and "Tragedies," each section comprising two volumes) and a first edition of the biography. There is also a supplemental volume here that contains "doubtful" plays; a "History of Opinion," covering the Shakespeare studies and criticism of Pope, Johnson, Steevens, and others; and an account of the enthusiasm for the plays in Germany. The biography ends with notes on Shakespeare's will, facsimi … [Click Below for Full Description]

HENRY, Joseph
Printed by James Kay, Jun. & Brothers, Philadelphia, 1839. First edition, author's presentation offprint, of the third and most important part of Henry's Contributions to Electricity and Magnetism. Following on from his discovery of electromagnetic self-induction in 1832, in the present paper Henry extends his results on 'galvanic' electricity (current produced by batteries) to the inductive effects of static electricity. Along the way, he established the principle of the electrical transformer, which was crucial to later nineteenth-century science and technology. Henry himself considered the findings reported in this paper "the most important I have ever made" (see below). OCLC lists only one copy of this offprint (Yale Medical Library). Provenance: Presentation inscription in the author's hand on the title page, "To the Rev. Professor Hitchcock with the respects of the author." The recipient is probably Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864), ordained Congregationalist pastor, Professor of Chemistry and Natural History at Amherst College (1825-1845), of Natural Theology and Geology (1845-1864), and third President of the College (1845-1854). Like Henry himself, Hitchcock was a founding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1830, when he was an instructor in mathematics at The Albany Academy (New York), Joseph Henry (1797-1878) was the first to observe the phenomena of electromagnetic mutual- and self-induction (the production of a voltage in a wire as a result of a varying current in another, or the same, wire). He failed to publish his results, howe … [Click Below for Full Description]

CUSTINE La Russie en 1839. Paris, Amyot, 1843, complet en 4 volumes in-8, 2ff.-XXXIpp.-354pp. - 2ff.-416pp. - 2ff.-470pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

Pirate editions of Shelley's works had persuaded his father, Sir Timothy, that all hope of obscurity had passed, and Mary was allowed to prepare a proper edition provided there was only a minimum of biographical information. "Mary Shelley brought Shelley into the mainstream of the national culture. He was no longer the author of a notorious banned poem [Queen Mab] only obtainable from shops specializing in blasphemy, sedition and advice on birth control. He was the prophet of Prometheus Unbound, one of the most ambitious attempts ever made to uplift life by literature, and of other works such as the "Ode to the West Wind". The notes that Mary added are masterpieces of editing, adding so immeasurably to the reader's understanding that nobody would now consider printing Shelley's poems without them" (St Clair, p. 492).
[Click Below for Full Description]

Clara Wieck Schumann wrote her set of Three Romances while in Paris in 1839, and they were published as Opus 11 in 1840. The second romance, however, was apparently so dear to Robert Schumann that he had it published separately as a supplement to the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik. "Clara described the piece as 'the little melancholy romance,' and she added, 'I was thinking of you continually throughout its creation.' She sent it to him on July 2 with the admonition: 'You must play it freely-at times passionately and then again in a melancholy way. I like it very much; please return it right away and don't be afraid to find fault with it. That can only be useful to me.' Schumann could find nothing to criticize and answered: 'In your Romance I can hear again that w … [Click Below for Full Description]
