John Alston
Glasgow: Smith & Elder & Co, 1839. Front and back cover scratched and damaged although still in good shape. Foxing too. Please feel free to make an offer. All offers will be considered. This book was made a specimen (there is no other copy) of John Alstons' improved method of writing for the blind. This book is the first edition of Braille in plain English by John Alston and is accompanied by a letter, in Braille, from John Alston. This book was publisher in 1839 and is, I believe, to be the only one every made. Braille was originally invented in france by Louis Braille but John Alston invented the british version later on. About the book The Westminster Shorter Catechism is a catechism written in 1646 and 1647 by the Westminster Assembly, a synod of English and Scottish theologians and laymen intended to bring the Church of England into greater conformity with the Church of Scotland. The assembly also produced the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Larger Catechism. A version without Scripture citations was completed on 25 November 1647 and presented to the Long Parliament, and Scripture citations were added on 14 April 1649. Catechesis is a practice of teaching the Christian faith. New converts to Christianity were taught through lectures during the first four centuries of the Church's existence, but this practice was largely abandoned with the rise of Christendom. Christian humanists and Protestant Reformers sought to revive the practice, including the Reformed. John Calvin's Genevan Catechism was especially influential among the British Reformed. Dickens, Charles; Browne, Hablot K. ("Phiz" and Meadows, Kenny
Chapman and Hall, 1839. Browne, Hablot K. ['Phiz"]; Meadows, Kenney. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, mixed state, octovo size, 707 pp. Very good. This was writer Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) third novel, widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists, blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for, such as, harsh boarding schools, the privilege of royal title and wealth, social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away. The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows (1790 - 1874), he is best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens [n.b. above information from Wiki]. ___DESCRIPTION: Half red morocco leather over marbled paper boards, six compartments on spine, five with gilt, title and author in gilt to one compartment, embossed decorative and gilt borders to front and rear boards, all edges marbled, frontis of a young Charles Dickens (supplied), thirty-nine plates by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] and twenty-four plates of various characters in the novel by Kenny Meadows (the extra plates). This is a mixed state in that two of the first four plates have the Chapman and Hall imprint, further, the correction on p.123 has been made, bu … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARTENS, Conrad.
Sydney: 1839. Watercolour on board, image 46 x 64 cms. Signed lower right and dated 1839. Mounted and framed. The rediscovery of a major Sydney painting by Conrad Martens (1801-1878). At the time this outstanding painting was commissioned, the English-born artist Martens had been in New South Wales for four years. He had arrived in Sydney in 1835, in company with Charles Darwin, aboard HMS Beagle, on which he had travelled as voyage artist in 1833-1834. Once settled in Sydney, Martens built his artistic reputation with a loyal clientele amongst officials and pastoralists of the colony and was widely recognised by the picture-buying elite as a superior landscape artist; today he is probably the best known of all colonial artists. One of the leading members of the colonial establishment was the Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay who held the most important public office in the colony after the Governor from 1826 to 1837. For more than a decade, the Colonial Secretary's house was also the family's home (although Macleay spent much of that time planning his grand new house at Elizabeth Bay, designed by John Verge, the fashionable architect of the day). This watercolour by Martens is the most accomplished extant depiction of the Colonial Secretary's residence with its lush semi-tropical garden setting, but it also provides a wonderful image of Francis Greenway's fountain situated in Macquarie Place as it was in its original form. This little structure caused the architect great grief for its perceived extravagance when he was questioned by J.T. Bigge, the Royal Commissioner i … [Click Below for Full Description]

VRIESE, Willem Hendrik de
Amsterdam: Johannes Müller, 1839. Octavo, two hand-coloured lithographic plates, manuscript presentation inscription to "Lys" (for Cornelius?) van der Hoop in Salzburg; a fine copy in the original printed green glazed-paper boards. Rare: a superb copy in the original boards with a family manuscript presentation. This small work by the botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese is a detailed survey of the truly enormous number of exotic plants being grown at the Villa Spaarnberg, the country estate of Adriaan van der Hoop (1778-1854), a wealthy Dutch banker with a passionate interest in exotic botany: the range of his interests is summed up by the two plants depicted on the fine lithographic plates (a Lily from Japan and a "Theophrasta" from Hispaniola). Significantly, van der Hoop and his gardeners had been assiduous in their collection of Australian plants, assembling a remarkable group for such an early date, especially in a continental garden: by our count no fewer than 188 are listed, from grevilleas and banksias through to Gymea Lilies, and even including a scattering of eucalypts and other full-grown trees (full list available on request). Despite its relevance to Australian botany, we can see no record of a copy being held in Australia. It is reasonably well-recorded that the Villa's gardens were full of plants from the older Dutch colonies, notably southern Africa and the East Indies, but van der Hoop had much larger ambitions: the truly enormous number of exotics that are noticed in the catalogue is testament to the way in which such gardens had developed from being the pre … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dickens, Charles
Chapman and Hall, 1839. Cruikshank, George. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 534 p. Very Good. First one-volume edition, with 40 sketches by George Cruikshank. Originally published in two series/three volumes, "Chapman and Hall obtained the copyright of Sketches in 1837, they published all of them in twenty monthly parts from November 1837 through June 1839. Cruikshank designed a cover, enlarged the plates and created 13 new illustrations for these monthly parts. In May 1839, Chapman and Hall published these parts complete in one volume with all 40 of Cruikshank's illustrations" (Walter E. Smith, Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth), hence the "New Edition" referred to on the title page. Half title page has the "Vote for Spruggins" illustration, full page drawing before title page has crowd waving to two gentlemen in a balloon, indicative of first "one volume" edition published. ***DESCRIPTION: Half navy leather over marbled boards, marbled endpapers and edges. Five raised bands on leather spine, compartments 1, 3, 4, and 5 with gilt decorations, compartment 2 red leather label with title in gilt, compartment 6 gilt device of the head of a double-horned animal. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Francis George Dyne (1823-1882/4), the binding is likely custom for the family library as the horned animal at the tail of the spine is mirrored on the left above the field of the coat of arms. Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a VERY rare FIRST ISSUE of the First Edition of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. 624p.p. All of Smith's textual points here present, including 'latter' to p.160, and 'visiter' to p.121. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's deluxe half Morocco, over cloth boards. To the spine are raised bands, finely tooled in gilt, and the title in gilt. The author's name 'Chas. Dickens' to the spine, along with 'LONDON. 1839' to the foot. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. Externally the spine and boards are largely bright, with only occasional extraneous wear, commensurate with age, in places. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled. The plates have the predictable odd spot/toning in places. Overall, to find an example of this title is indeed rare, particularly bound in such a rare ORIGINAL publisher's binding, and in the first state. One of the best-loved works of the C19th, this fine and scarce example would grace any collection, and it comes VERY highly recommended. 1839. "...The greatest of the anti-slavery pamphlets; in all probability, the most crushing indictment of any institution ever written." Historian Dwight L. Dumond, in reference to American Slavery: As It Is. Here we offer the first edition of the most influential of the United States abolition sources and the first fusion of the anti-slavery movement with the women's rights movement: American Slavery: As It Is, by Theodore White Weld, published anonymously by The American Anti-Slavery Society, New York City, in 1839. This extremely rare volume is filled with narratives of victims and witnesses to the depraved institution of American slavery. It was wildly influential, providing vivid, documented accounts for the anti-slavery movement and even serving as a source work for Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin that was still 13 years away. With the modern acceptance of symbols of the confederacy as "heritage," this seminal volume is still relevant today. Recently very attractively rebound in full calf leather with acid-free black endpapers. Text block is age-toned and darkened on edge from perhaps once sitting too close to the fireplace, as the last page appears soot-darkened (please see pics.) Title page has pen-and-ink markings, "Mechanics Library" rubber stamp, and a Providence Public Library blindstamp. Binding is very tight and square, text pages are durable, bright, and crisp with a few minor edge tears and various foxing and light moisture stains throughout. A very readable copy in a wonderful rebinding! 224 pages; measures approximately 9 x 5.75-inches. This wond … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a particularly rare Dickens publication, in the form of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., Paris, 1839. Complete. 8vo. It was long thought that the 1846 Bradbury and Evans Edition of this title was the first in one-volume, so this scarce edition merits bibliographical note, for it appeared seven-years hence. It is not mentioned in Eckel or Gimbel, presumably the reason being neither had located a copy themselves. Bound in contemporaneous green calf, over marbled boards. The spine finely decorated in gilt. Original marbled endpapers. All page edges untrimmed. Externally it remains in pleasing order; the calf only predictably rubbed, but this is commensurate with age. The hinges remain very firm. Internally, save the odd sporadic spot, it remains delightfully clean throughout. Overall, this volume will add greatly to any serious Dickens collection; not a title often seen on the open market, this is indeed an opportunity not to be missed. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

BAYLE (A.L.J.)
