CUFFEE, Paul
Vernon, [New York]: Printed by Horace N. Bill, 1839. First edition. Octavo. 21pp. Stitched to contemporary pink wrappers. Some chipping on front wrap, small corner of title page chipped, light stain at the bottom of the pages not affecting any text, else a nice, very good copy. Narrative of Paul Cuffee, the son of a famous sea captain, abolitionist, and African colonizer of the same name. He was of mixed Ashanti African and Wampanoag (not Pequot) Indian descent. The author accompanied his father on a voyage in 1813 when he joined the whaler Atlas as a 12-year-old harpooner. The ship was seized by the English and Cuffee was held in Jamaica for eight months. He eventually escaped and spent the next decades aboard a number of whalers, visiting Brazil, the Azores, Peru, and the Society Islands. The *Narrative* "is one of the scarcest and most sought after of all accounts of the American whale-fishery" (*Howgego*). Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

GALT, John
1839. GALT, John. THE TRAVELS AND OBSERVATIONS OF HAEACH, THE WANDERING JEW. Comprehending a view of the most distinguished events in the history of mankind since the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus: with a description of the manners, customs, and remarkable monuments of the most celebrated nations: interspersed with ancedotes of eminent men of differnt periods. New edition, revised and improved, with many valuable additions by the Rev. T. Clark. 12mo., full, tree-calf leather; 424 pages. The Rev. T. Clark is a pseudonym for John Galt [1779-1839]- a Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. He has been called the first political novelist in the English language. The first letters in the last 26 sentences after "The Conclusion" spell out "THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BY JOHN GALT". Illustrated & with two fold-out maps still present. This appears to be the second edition and, for whatever reason, it seems to be terrifically scarce. This copy is also distinguished by having the ink name of "Thomas W. Beauchamp Proctor" on the front endpaper, who was the 2nd Baronet of Langley Park in Norfolk. His son, William, was a well-known Royal Navy officer. Good (spine chipped & eroded, some darkening around edge front cover- looks like it may have been in a fire but there is absolutely no odor; text pretty clean with few creases & little foxing- more to several front pages; maps extend a bit from the fore-edge & have minor wear on one side). $500.00.
