Pen and ink and watercolour on paper, 220 x 270 mm, sheet 245 x 350 mm; unmounted; an early pencilled inscription in the right hand margin reads: "3 or 400 miles North of Sidney, Clarence River on which is the Station Bolivia"; verso with a near contemporary newspaper cutting laid down, referring to a recent mutiny on board HMS Buffalo in the mid North Atlantic in October 1839; short edge tear at lower margin, otherwise the map is in fine condition. A beautifully drawn and lettered map showing the Australian mainland and Van Diemen's Land. The near contemporary inscription and cutting help to date the map. Bolivia Station, near present-day Tenterfield in northern New South Wales, was established by grazier Edward Hurry in 1840. He very quickly sold the station to Stuart Donaldson, who in turn sold it to Edward Irby in 1843. During the 1840s, according to Irby's own memoirs, he and several other men, including Thomas Windeyer, carried out a number of massacres of the local Ngarabal people. It is possible that the creator or early owner of this map was connected in some way with Bolivia Station. The western half of Australia is marked New Holland; Swan River is marked, as is Rottnest Island; the far southwest is labelled Lion's Land; the northwest coast shows both Endracht's Land and DeWit's Land; the far north is marked Arnhem's Land, and Cape York is marked Carpentaria; Sydney is labelled Port Jackson; Melbourne is labelled Port Phillip, but no locations are marked in the interior of what is now Victoria.
