GAGARINE, Prince Grégoire - ???????, ????? ????????].
c. - 1840 1839 - Watercolour on paper (24 x 12 cm), offered together with its hand-coloured lithograph (34.5 x 24.2 cm) - plate 26 from "Scenes, paysages, moeurs et costumes du Caucase" (A. Hauser, Paris, c. 1840), with a blind stamp "A.B." in lower margin; two small marginal tears, light waterstain in right margin nor affecting image. An original sketch of a Georgian lady by one of the most famous Russian explorers of the Caucasus of the XIX century; here offered together with its lithograph from a very rare work on Caucasian costumes. This watercolour was painted by Gagarin as part of the series in 1839-1840 when he travelled to the Caucasus following his friend Mikhail Lermontov. It was shortly published in Paris in the work "Costumes du Caucase", which was intended to form part of a larger work depicting the scenes, landscape, customs and costumes of the Caucasus and be issued in 48 livraisons. However, Colas states that only 11 of these were issued, each containing 6 plates of costumes. Even individual plates of this work are rare. Prince Gagarin (1810-93), a painter, architect and art critic, was a Vice-president of the Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1859-72. He studied with Bryusov and was a member of the brilliant high society in St. Petersburg, where in his early years he met Pushkin and drew illustrations for some of his works. A friend of Lermontov, he went with him to the Caucasus, where he stayed on military and public service during almost 15 years until 1855. He lived a few years in Tiflis (nowadays Tbilisi) and before that had the opportunity to travel to var … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARWIN, Charles R., KING, P. Parker, & FITZROY, Robert]
56 plates & maps (some folding). Four vols. 8vo, orig. green cloth (very careful repairs to hinges & joints, Vol. III well-rebacked with orig. spine laid-down), spines lettered in gilt. London: H. Colburn, 1839. First edition of the full narrative of one of the greatest marine surveys of the 19th century. "The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin's intellectual life and in the history of biological sciences. Darwin sailed with no formal scientific training. He returned a hard-headed man of science, knowing the importance of evidence, almost convinced that species had not always been as they were since the creation but had undergone change. He also developed doubts of the value of the Scriptures as a trustworthy guide to the history of the earth and of man, with the result that he gradually became an agnostic. The experiences of his five years in the Beagle, how he dealt with them, and what they led to, built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought."-D.S.B., III, p. 566. In this set, the third volume with Darwin's contributions, is the first separate edition, also issued in 1839. It bears the bookplate and signature, dated 1840, of Robert James Shuttleworth (1810-74), the famous botanist and conchologist. Very good set. ? Freeman 10 & 11. Severn, Charles; [Ward, John]
xix, 315 pp. 8vo. Half calf, gilt titles and decorations, marbled boards. A diary now well-known for its references to the famous playwright William Shakespeare, who of course was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare died about 13 years before Ward was born, but had family members who lived in the area during Ward's life, for which reason Ward felt an obligation to become familiar with his life and work. The diary also includes details regarding Ward's practice as a medical doctor in Stratford, and references to the Ward family's loyalty to the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. This transcription also includes a brief biography by Charles Severn"John Ward, vicar of Stratford-upon-Avon and physician, collected extensive notes on religion, medicine, and literature alongside miscellaneous gossip. This notebook contains several references to Shakespeare: the only known account of Shakespeare's death; a reference to Shakespeare's earnings, lifestyle, and "natural wit"; a reminder to himself "to peruse Shakespeare's plays" so that he would not be "ignorant in that matter"; and mention of Shakespeare's two daughters, one whom married the physician John Hall and had a daughter, Lady Barnard of Abington. This is a reference to Shakespeare's grandchild Elizabeth. She married Thomas Nash in 1626, and then John Barnard in 1649.Modernized/Translated transcription:[fol. 138v]Shakespeare had but 2 daughters one whereof Mr. Hall the physician married and by her had one daughter, to wit the Lady Bernard of Abingdon. [fol. 140r]I have heard that Mr. Shakespeare was a natural w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Broadside. Letterpress (Very Good, soft folds, tiny holes in left margin, small loss of text in the upper margin) 34 x 21,5 cm (13.3 x 8.2 inches) - Wolverhampton: William Parke 1839. A rare playbill, dated September 13, 1839, advertises the evening preformance at the Theatre in Wolverhampton, presenting the plays The Lord of the Manor, Ma Fellow Clerk, Nicolas Nickleby and Poor Smike! Or, Doings at Do-The-Boys Hall!! and others. This is one of the earliest known theatrical adaptations of Charles Dickens’s novel Nicholas Nickleby. The story was originally published as a serial in 13 parts between March 1838 -October 1839, but a theatre play, based on the story, was plagiarised before the novel was finished and the resolution of the stage play is therefore wildly different from the novel. Nicolas Nickleby or, Doings at Do-The-Boys Hall, was first preformed at the Adelphi Theatre and City of London Theatre in 1838. The pirated adaptations of his work upset Dickens to the point, he dedicated a short dialogue inside the last part of Nicolas Nickleby to plagiarism and modification of still unpublished books.

VISCONTI, Sigismondi, DUFOUR
Simonneau, Graveur, 1839. Contemporary roan-backed marbled boards, spine and edges worn; title page with waterstain damage, and other than some very small tears at the edges (not affecting any of the images), the plates are in beautiful condition. The first edition of this work was published in 1815 with only six plates. A small volume of an elementary text was subsequently published, but as is most often the case in nearly all known copies, the work is presented as the plates only without text. The plates illustrate the solar system, the orbit of the Earth's annual revolution around the sun with the indication of the seasons, the different positions of the Earth in relation to the sun during each month of the year, the phases of the moon, eclipses of both the sun and the moon, the tides and a view of the interior of the Earth.

[Biblia arabica - Psalmi].
1839. 8vo. 354, (14) pp., wanting final blank. Contemporary blindstamped brown calf. Rare Psalter from the printing office of the Melkite monastery of St. John the Baptist at al-Shuwayr in the Lebanese Kisrawan mountains, operative between 1734 and 1899, during which time it produced in all 69 Arabic books, including re-editions (cf. Silvestre de Sacy I, pp. 412-414; Middle Eastern Languages and the Print Revolution. A Cross-Cultural Encounter, Westhofen 2002, pp. 179-181). Nasrallah counts 15 editions of the Psalter alone, the last (produced in 1899, the only as-Shuwayr Psalter in the Aboussouan collection) constituting the swan-song of that important press. "Le Psautier a longtemps été le livre classique unique des écoles d'Orient. Cela nous explique pourquoi il fut si souvent édité" (Nasrallah, p. 38). - Binding a little rubbed; some light browning and brownstaining (mainly confined to margins). A good copy. Not in Nasrallah.

HACK, Maria.
London, Harvey and Darton, 1832. 12mo. Publisher's cloth with gilt-stamped morocco lettering-piece; ; pp. xix, 393, [2, advertisements], folding handcoloured engraved plate with profiles, folding engraved map, additional engraved title, engraved frontispiece, 3 engraved plates, a few illustrations in the text (among them the strata near Chichester); hinges worn, light browning to frontispiece and engraced titel, as usual, otherwise internally very good and clean. Very rare first edition, containing more illustrations than the later ones. Maria Hack (1777-1844) wrote a number of educational books for the Darton publishing company. Her eldest daughter Elizabeth oversaw her illustrations while another daughter, Margaret, married into the Darton dynasty. This book is a very engaging introduction to contemporary geology and devotes space to the discoveries by Mary Anning of the icthyosaur and plesiosaur in Lyme Regis, which were continuing sensations. As with most of Hack's books, the text is in the form of a dialogue between little Harry Beaufoy and his inordinately well-educated parents. The Dartons: An Annotated Check-list, G416.

Jane Taylor (1783 - 1824) and her sister, Ann Taylor Gilbert (1782 - 1866) collaborated on this volume, which also included poems by Adelaide O'Keeffe, Bernard Barton and Isaac Taylor. The poems were first published in 1804 and have been described by A. S. W. Rosenbach as " one of the most influential books of poetry in the history of children's literature." In 1805, The Eclectic Review included this very short notice of the 1804 volume: "The moral tendency of this book might aplogize for poetry far inferior to that which it contains; while its poetic merit is, in fact, superior to that of the generality of this class of works."
