1839. Lettera autografa firmata, in lingua francese, in formato cm.20,3x12,5, compilata solo al recto.

Brown, Fenner
[Providence: publisher not identified, 1839. Folio broadside (approx. 16" x 8½") text triple column under the running head; signed in type by Fenner Brown, Aaron White, Jr., "and four others," dated Cumberland, October, 1839 at the end of the third column; some light creasing at top; previous fold, near fine. Remonstrating against the recommendation that Rhode Island banks suspend payment of debts and petitioning the legislature to pass a law requiring the banks to honor the paper currency they have issued. While the proximate cause of Dorr's Rebellion was the desire to replace an outmoded State Constitution, and in particular to broaden the franchise, the economic conditions caused by the Panic of 1837 provided fertile ground for "insurrection." Brown was for a time a member of the Rhode Island Legislature and was narrowly defeated as a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1847. White was a close political ally of Thomas Dorr and one of the leaders of Dorr's Rebellion. According to an online article by Chaput and DeSimone, White was a proponent of black suffrage ("Strange Bedfellows," in Common-Place, Vol. 10, no. 2, Jan. 2010). OCLC: NY Historical, AAS, Library Co., Williams, and Brown; not in American Imprints.

A professional chemist, Chevreul became Director of Dyeing at the Gobelins royal tapestry manufactory in 1824. Chevreul's "law of simultaneous contrast of colours" states that colours seen side by side will always appear to the eye "as dissimilar as possible, both in their optical composition and in the height of their tone." On this basis Chevreul proceeded to analyze the consequences and applications of colour contrast, i.e., the modifications of hue and tone occurring when juxtaposed colours are viewed at the same time, and he also established a precise nomenclature for colour relationships. An unusually fine copy of an extremely rare book, without the considerable foxing to the text volume as in a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINTE-BEUVE
Lausanne, 16 juillet 1839. 3 ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

Graves, Capt.William, Jr., et al
Various, 1839 A total of 115 documents, including invoices, receipts, ledger pages, business and personal letters and other papers, most encompassing the ten year period 1839-49 and relating to the activities of the ship Thomas Perkins and its master, William Graves, Jr. (1811-1877). A handful of items are dated later than 1849, relating to Graves' other miscellaneous business matters. The Thomas Perkins, a 595 ton vessel built in 1837, was owned by merchants David Pingree and Emery Johnson of Salem, MA and captained by William Graves Jr. of Newburyport, MA. The vessel sailed frequently from New York, at times via Liverpool, to Asian trading ports, making stops at various locations in India and Aracan (Burma), as well as calls to Penang, Singapore, Amoy, Canton, Victoria (now Hong Kong), Macau, Batavia (now Jakarta) and Manila. [There is at least one historical incident in Canton that implicated the Thomas Perkins in the opium trade - see ref. - when the drug was discovered hidden within boxes supposedly containing silver bullion, although nothing related to this trade is obviously referred to within the present documents.] Most of the correspondence, receipts, disbursement accounts and ledger entries refer to these voyages and were issued at ports along the way. Fascinating details are provided on the cost of cargo, such as hemp, indigo, cloth, sugar, spices and coffee brought back by the Thomas Perkins to America, as well as bullion (Mexican Dollars, British Sovereigns, etc.) transported out to Asia on behalf of the owners and fellow investors, presumably in payment for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Six composers took part in the work: Chopin, Pixis, Thalberg, Czerny, Herz and Liszt each contributed a variatIon, and in addition Liszt wrote the introduction, the piano arrangement of the theme, the bridge passages between the variations and the finale. The work is interesting in that it gives a conspectus in a small space of the various styles of piano writing at the time; one can see clearly how Liszt's technique stands out from that of his contemporaries, and though Chopin's contribution is admittedly not one of his greatest works, sufficient of his individual poetical personality emerges to prove his stature. But those who would like to see the kind of music that Thalberg, Herz and Pixis actually wrote may find much of interest here." Searle: The Music of Liszt, pp. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sara Coleridge
Phantasmion Sara Coleridge Samuel Colman, New York, 1839 First US edition of this pioneering fantasy novel. It is strongly suggestive that this is the first full-length high fantasy novel, preceding Tolkien by a whole century. The story takes place in a completely imagined world with its own different lands and cultures. There is a prince going off on a quest, a fairy, magic, politics and war. It is quite possible George MacDonald had read this book, who typically is called the "grand father of fantasy". Coleridge would be the great-grand mother. A recommended article is found here: https://www.blackgate.com/2010/09/19/worlds-within-worlds-the-first-heroic-fantasy-part-iv/ Two 16mo volumes in the original boards, backed by cloth spines with gilt text and patterns. Both volumes are in good condition and actually respectably nice considering their frailty. Scuffed and rubbed boards; the gilt has weakened, but one can still clearly read the title and the bottom which says "Colman's Library of Romance"; the spine head of vol 2 has a chip; some foxing, mostly in vol 2. Both bindings are still holding tight. Vol 1 has light brown endpapers, while vol 2 has plain white. Another difference is the additional page naming Colman's Library in vol 1, while vol 2 doesn't. - - - Free international shipping with airmail The seller takes no responsibility for any potential customs fees by the destination country. 1839. Purtut … [Click Below for Full Description]

A magnificent work illustrating a rejected and derided design. 'In the competitions for public buildings that formed such a significant feature of late Georgian architectural activity, however, Hopper was almost uniformly unsuccessful. Disappointment at failure in that for a new General Post Office, 1819-20, turned to resentment when the building erected to Robert Smirke's design 1824-28 emerged from its hoarding bearing, to Hopper's eyes, a close resemblance to his own entry. Defeated by Barry in the Houses of Parliament competition, 1835-6, Hopper was one of the most persistent and percipient critics of the competition judges, setting out detailed grounds for objection in his Letter to the . Rev Sydney Smith 1st Edition 1839 Ballot Election Political
Ballot by Rev Sydney Smith 1st Edition London 1839 Sydney Smith (3 June 1771 - 22 February 1845) was an English wit, writer and Anglican cleric. Smith's first book 'Six Sermons, preached in Charlotte Street Chapel, Edinburgh' was published in 1800. He married Catharine Amelia Pybus in the same year and the couple settled in Edinburgh. While there, he helped set up the 'Edinburgh Review' and became its first editor in 1802. He continued to write articles for the review for the next quarter of the century which were a key element to the publication's success Smith's reputation among his contemporaries as a humourist and wit grew to such an extent that a number of the observations which are now attributed to him may be of doubtful provenance. Lord Houghton recorded that he never, except once, knew Smith to make a jest of any religious subject, "and then he immediately withdrew his words, and seemed ashamed that he had uttered them". To be set against that encomium is one of Smith's best-known lines, to the effect that his friend Henry Lutterell's idea of heaven was eating pâté de foie gras to the sound of trumpets. Long after his death, he was often quoted in English literary life and was remembered by homemakers in the United States through his rhyming recipe for salad dressing. Jane Austen expert Margaret C. Sullivan speculates in an essay that the character Henry Tilney, the romantic interest of the protagonist Catherine Morland in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, may have been based on Smith. The memory and achievements of Smith are perpetuated by the Sydney Smith Associati … [Click Below for Full Description]

This was however contradicted by P. H. Touvrey, a compatriot of Hindelang present during the Rebel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Robert Darwin
1839. Binding is secure and square. Minor wear to corners. Internally excellent with very little foxing or marks. No previous ownership marks. An excellent copy of an early Darwin article, published when he was 30 years old. In 1838 Darwin wrote to his close friend Charles Lyell and spoke of his excursion to the Highlands of Scotland in the most glowing terms: "I wandered the mountains in all directions and examined that most extraordinary district. I think without any exceptions, not even the first volcanic island, the first elevated beach, or the passage of the Cordillera, as so interesting to me as this week. It is far the most remarkable area I ever examined. I can assure you Glen Roy has astonished me". Darwin concluded, based on his findings in South America, that Glen Roy's 'roads' were shorelines of marine origin, but it was later proven that they were a series of of ice-dammed proglacial lake margins. OBSERVATIONS ON THE PARALLEL ROADS OF GLEN ROY, AND OF OTHER PARTS OF LOCABER IN SCOTLAND, WITH AN ATTEMPT TO PROVE THAT THEY ARE OF MARINE ORIGIN BY CHARLES DARWIN [FIRST EDITION] [WITH A MAP AND AN ENGRAVED PLATE] LONDON,[RICHARD AND JOHN E.
