Russell & Reeves, DeBuque, 1839. [2],597,[1]pp. Hardcover in blue paper-wrapped boards and leather spine with gilt labels. This law book is essentially the first legal code for Iowa and the Nebraska, Dakota, and Montana territories. Issued as the first collected Iowa laws, it became famous as "Old Blue Book," which was adopted to serve for many years as the law of all the country west of the Missouri to the Rocky Mountains between the 42nd and 45th parallels. This prints the Northwest Ordinance, the act to establish the territorial government of Iowa, and other resolutions and acts of the Territory. This was the second book printed in Iowa Territory, preceded only by a volume of the Wisconsin legislature, printed in Burlington in 1838, when that legislature was forced to temporarily relocate. A seminal frontier American law book. SABIN 35020. FITZPATRICK, IOWA TERRITORIAL DOCUMENTS, p.19. LC, IOWA CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION 122 SCARCE. Not Ex-Lib. CUSTINE La Russie en 1839. Paris, Amyot, 1843, complet en 4 volumes in-8, 2ff.-XXXIpp.-354pp. - 2ff.-416pp. - 2ff.-470pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

ARAGO Jacques
[Click Below for Full Description]

Menzel, Wolfgang, Schriftsteller und Literaturhistoriker (1798-1873).
Stuttgart, 25. VI, 1839. 3 SS. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). 4to. Jahrhundert keine Ehre. Eine Gesetzgebung, welche die Menschen gewöhn … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear! Here we offer a very early, 1839 third edition and first illustrated edition of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's iconic classic horror story, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, published in London by Shelley's publisher, Richard Bentley (as "Henry Colburn & Richard Bentley"), the original publisher of her final 1831 illustrated revision of her 1818 work. This edition includes the original first visual representation of the monster, a frontispiece steel engraving by Theodore von Holst depicting the creature coming to life, in addition to a vignet title page featuring a second illustration, "The Day of My Departure at Length Arrived." The tissue-protected illustrations are dated "1831," as this volume was assembled from parts some of which were produced 8 years earlier to be combined with an 1839 printing of Friedrich Schiller's unfinished novel, The Ghost-Seer, a commonplace practice in the day of dog's-dinner publishing operations. This hugely important novel introduced the 19th Century to the themes of reckless industrialization, the struggle between the religious and scientific realms, and even far fore-visioned the psychological and cognitive revelations that were still more than a century away. Very good, very readable condition with only minor wear to the boards and a neatly-repaired spine, preserving the original gilt-impressed cloth. Features original advertising yellow endpages and intact frontis tissue. Remarkably tight and square binding; very clean, bright, and crisp text and frontispieces. 365 pages in all. The book … [Click Below for Full Description]

1839. NEW- Still has plastic surroundings. ish women's writing in the 19th century ranged over diverse subjects and genres. The volumes collected together in this anthology reflect the women's intellectual contribution to 19th-century culture in both an Irish and British context. Some of the works reflect typically Irish concerns, such as religion and and the colonial relationship, while others address universal concerns. The writing in this collection ranges over a work of prescriptive literature, a novel, a feminist polemic, autobiography and history. They contain insights into Irish social, political and religious life. Each of the volumes will have a new introduction placing the work in the appropriate social and historical context.
