Vincent Eyre
1839. ith a Journal of Imprisonment in Affghanistan Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The extremely scarce first edition of Lieutenant Vincent Eyre's account of his first hand experiences during the First Afghan War, during which he was captured and imprisoned with his family. Illustrated with a folding map. The first edition of this work. 'The Military Operations at Cabul' is an important work documenting Lieutenant Vincent Eyre's experiences in the First Afghan War. During the war, which took place during 1839 to 1842, Eyre was seriously wounded. He and his family were captured by Akbar Khan and imprisoned, and remained in captivity for nearly nine months. During this time, Eyre kept a diary, describing his experiences whilst in captivity. This manuscript was eventually smuggled out to British India, and was published later as this work. Eyre and his family were eventually rescued by Sir George Pollock. After he was rescued, he took part in the Relief of Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Later that year, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and then to brevet Colonel. Vincent Eyre was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India in 1867, and eventually retired as a Major-General. During his life, he also founded a colony for destitute families of Portuguese descent, and set up an ambulance service during the Franco-Prussian War. With a folding map. Lacks half-title. This work is a duodecimo. First register is irregular, but the pagination in continuous. After the first register, the signatures continue as B-S12, T9. Sketches by Boz: - 1839 original cloth binding by Dickens, Charles 1839 Chapman and Hall first collected edition. 526 pages, with 40 illustrations by George Cruikshank. Original 1839 binding (uncommon), with vertical grained cloth and an embossed design on the board panels. Condition of the book is Good considering its age. Condition issues are as noted below. Also, please carefully review the listing photos. 1) The board cloth shows significant wear. The color of the cloth has faded. The cloth has split where the board panels join with the spine. Four small stains from old tape repairs are visible at the corners of both the front and back boards. 2) Portions of the board cloth are missing on the spine. The top edge of the spine cloth is gone. There also is a long thin piece of cloth missing on the spine's lower right edge. This fragment of cloth has been retained (see last photo), and could be used if the spine cloth is to be repaired. 3) The front endpapers contain the prior owner's bookplate and signature. The owner was Basil Thomas Woodd, an attorney and Member of Parliament. 4) All of Cruikshank's illustrations are present. Some minor rubbing to extremities, scrape across front board of vol. three, an excellent set, sound and internally clean. Engraved portrait frontispiece to vol. one, half-title in each volume. First edition of Mary Shelley's collected edition of her husband's poetical works, the first complete collected edition, which established Shelley finally and irreversibly amongst the great poets of the English language. Pirate editions of Shelley's works had persuaded his father, Sir Timothy, that all hope of obscurity had passed, and Mary was allowed to prepare a proper edition provided there was only a minimum of biographical information. "Mary Shelley brought Shelley into the mainstream of the national culture. He was no longer the author of a notorious banned poem [Queen Mab] only obtainable from shops specializing in blasphemy, sedition and advice on birth control. He was the prophet of Prometheus Unbound, one of the most ambitious attempts ever made to uplift life by literature, and of other works such as the "Ode to the West Wind". The notes that Mary added are masterpieces of editing, adding so immeasurably to the reader's understanding that nobody would now consider printing Shelley's poems without them" (St Clair, p. 492). [LEWIS, Sarah]
New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1839. Hardcover. Near Fine. First American edition. 12mo. 149pp. Publisher's cloth decorated in blind and titled in gilt. Nice contemporary gift inscription: "Presented to Miss Harriett G. Reynolds by E. A. Reynolds, 1840," small spot on rear board, and the spine just a litle bit sunned, very near fine. "Sarah Lewis was a writer on the status of women [about whom little is known]. Woman's Mission, published anonymously in 1839 and later attributed to her, is her only work... this influential treatise... aimed at middle-class women within the home whose role [she] wishes to elevate but not extend in any public or political way... she also suggests that female moral influence will have its effect on the wider world, and will ultimately improve social and political attitudes... the reassuringly moderate ideology was well received by reviewers for journals usually on opposite sides of the debates on the question of women... the very moderation of Lewis's position with regard to political rights for women seems to have helped the dissemination of her ideas, which stimulated debate, and explained how far the position of women could be improved without a more radical programme." LEBAS
SHELLEY, Mary Wollstonecraft - Frederick Schiller
London: Richard Bentley, 1839, 1839. THIRD EDITION, FOURTH PRINTING, of the first revised edition of Shelley's masterpiece and the first to contain an illustration. First printing of engraved frontis dated 1831. The frontis depicts the creature coming to life. Bound in contemporary 1/2 tan calf, spine expertly relined with the original spine laid down. Text clean and bright a VERY GOOD copy. In her introduction, Shelley contextualizes the creation of her tale: "It proved a wet, ungenial summer, and incessant rain often confined us for days to the house. Some volumes of ghost stories, translated from the German into French, fell into our hands. 'We will each write a ghost story,' said Lord Byron; and his proposition was acceded to" Apparently quite scarce. Auction records locate only 3 copies appearing at auction over the last 40 years. The last one in 2000.This printing was apparently issued with and without the additional engraved title-page dated 1831. WorldCat locate 9 copies of the 1839 edition 7 without the engraved title-page and 2 with.

CUSTINE La Russie en 1839. Paris, Amyot, 1843, complet en 4 volumes in-8, 2ff.-XXXIpp.-354pp. - 2ff.-416pp. - 2ff.-470pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

Dickens, Charles
Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. First extra illustrated signed limited edition of one of Dickens' most popular novels. Octavos, two volumes bound in full brown pebbled morocco with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tolling to the spine in 6 compartments within raised gilt bands, floral gilt ruling to the panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated with numerous engravings. Inscribed by Charles Dickens three days before his final reading in his American tour on the limitation page, "Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens New York. Wednesday Fifteenth April, 1868." Dickens performed 22 readings at Steinway Hall in New York City between December 1867 and April 18, 1868. His final appearance occurred at a banquet dinner in his honor at the landmark Delmonico's on Saturday the 18th where he famously stated that he would no longer denounce America, having restored his faith during this visit after his less successful first trip twenty years earlier. This extra-illustrated edition was compiled and bound by Curtis Guild in 1880 with an additional printed title-page stating that it is "Extended by the Insertion of the Author's Autograph, a Portrait of Mr. Macready, a Complete Set of the Onwhyn plates, Illustrations by Darley, Reinhart, Eytinge and Others, Collected from Various Sources in Europe and America, by Curtis Guild / Boston, 1880." In near fine condition. A stunning example. In 1867, Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple, where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable work … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Darwin
Henry Colburn, London, 1839. A fine copy of the first separate edition of Darwin's account of his travels aboard H.M.S. Beagle. [i-iv] [vii] [viii-xiv], 615pp. plus pp. 609-629 addenda. Two folding maps. One of the great travel books ever written due to the scientific importance of Darwin's observations during his five year voyage aboard the Beagle while circumnavigating the globe. Darwin's own eloquence in relating his diary entries to the reader also contributes to the book's uniqueness and readability. Although "On the Origin of Species" is regarded as Darwin's most important work, published 20 years after this account, many of the arguments for evolution as espoused in that book are derived from his observations noted in the volume offered, here. In fact, "Voyage of the Beagle" was always Darwin's favorite work due to its primacy and to the joy derived from his travel experiences. The separately printed first edition published by Henry Colburn offered, here, was originally volume three of a three volume plus appendix set also published by Colburn in 1939. That publication was edited by Captain Robert Fitzroy, the captain of the H.M.S. Adventure/Beagle expedition. The set's title: "The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M.Ships Adventure and Beagle." Public interest in volume three of the set, Darwin's account, quickly convinced Colburn to publish it separately later in 1839. A beautiful copy of this book in attractive marbled boards and 3/4 leather. Elaborately gilt-tooled black leather spine with "Darwin's Journal" and "London 1839." in gilt.
