MORESBY (Robert).
Bon exemplaire.

Camm, Thomas William
1839. Mounted on cardboard.Five small watercolor sketches (18 x 4 cm total) by Thomas William Camm (1839-1912), founder, chief artist/designer and manufacturer of stained glass in England, opening operation in 1865 as Camm Brothers in Smethwick, and later, "The Studio." Thomas Camm was one of the most accomplished stained glass designers of the period. The American architect Ralph Adams Cram wrote "at the present moment a large number of artists in England are producing work of most singular beauty and perfection. Amongst these I have no hesitation in placing Mr. Camm easily as the first". His daughter Florence Camm produced most of the artwork for the company after his death in 1912. The studio won medals in Paris in 1878, Sydney in 1879 and in Turin in 1911 and commissions came in from America, Spain, New Zealand and India. Dozens of churches, institutions and private homes in England still boast stained glass windows designed by Camm and his daugher. Signed by Camm in initials lower right. Also holograph notation below, "T.W. Camm Smethwick The Cottars Saturday Night No. 1605." Reminiscent of Thomas Rowlandson. Scarce thus. Provenance: Directly from Camm Studiio Estate. Greeley, Horace (1811-1872)
Albany: April 15, 1839. 2pp bifolium, pen and ink on paper. 4to. A friendly letter to fellow newspaperman and lifelong friend and correspondent, Obidiah A. Bowe. Written shortly after Greeley's tenure as the editor of the New York state Whig newspaper, the Jeffersonian, and two years before Greeley founded the New York Tribune. The letter may be a reference to the 1839 congressional race and the "Coopers" is likely a reference to famed New York Democratic supporter, and American author, James Fennimore Cooper, who from 1839-1845 was embroiled in a series of bizarre libel cases against some of the country's most prominent newspaper editors, including Greeley. Reading in part: "Ain't we Yankees a used-up people? Faith, 'the Coopers came down like a wolf on the fold' and the way they put it to us was not slow I charge ye. They outlied, outbragged, outbullied, outcheated, and outvoted us; and if they had wanted twice as many I guess they would have stuck 'em in. They would only just have had to vote twice as many times as they did, and they could have done that easy. They wouldn't have had to vote but three times apiece on average. Though some must have voted ten or fifteen. Well, they've licked us out anyhow; and the worst of it is I fancy that by the use of the same means they can do it again. Enough said.". Old folds, small tear, else very good.

Thackeray, William M. & Dickens, Charles
Illustrated by George Cruikshank. London: Charles Tilt, 1839. 4 pp undated ads. Original dark green cloth wrappers pictorially decorated in gilt. First Edition, first issue, of this unusual collaboration between Thackeray, Dickens and Cruikshank. The volume consists of 31 quatrains of amusing verse, illustrated with Cruikshank's eleven full-page etchings (as well as the front cover design). According to Van Duzer, "It is now generally conceded that Thackeray wrote the text and that the notes and preface were by Dickens." For Thackeray it was quite early work: it was only the preceding year that was published THE YELLOWPLUSH CORRESPONDENCE, the "first publication in book form of any of Thackeray's writings" [Parrish]. As for Dickens, this fell just after OLIVER TWIST, at about the time NICHOLAS NICKLEBY was being serialized. Cruikshank, the only one of the three identified in the book, was the veteran of the group. This copy is of the first issue, with "wine" in stanza v; in the second issue this was changed to "vine," even though the subject at hand is wine, in order to maintain the cross-pronunciation of "w's" and "v's" (as in "wery best vine" in stanza xiii). Also, the pagination of the verse pages is in the center of each page; in later copies it was moved to the corner, as on the preface pages. Cohn describes the cloth wrapper as green ribbed cloth, but the copies we have seen are in this green diaper cloth. This copy, like a couple of others we have seen, has four pages (two leaves) of ads -- rather than the usual eight pages / four leaves. It is in near-fine condition … [Click Below for Full Description]

Liszt, Franz, Komponist (1811-1886).
- Ungedruckt.

Ainsworth, W. Harrison (George Cruikshank, illustrator)
London: Bentley, 1839. First edition. Finely bound in half morocco over marbled boards by Stikeman & Co. Top edges brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. Corners gently bumped and faint offsetting to several of the boards. Text blocks tight and square. In all a neat and pleasing copy. Small booksellers' descriptions tipped into the preliminaries of volume I. Bound without half titles in volumes I-II but present in volume III. Without the two page publisher's advertisement before the frontis of volume I as called for by Sadleir and Wolfe. Illustrated by George Cruikshank, this copy additionally includes an original sketch of the plate that appears in volume III page 82 signed by Cruikshank as well as an Autograph Letter Signed by the author inviting Maclise to dine with Dickens and Forster. "The first sign of Jack Sheppard comes from a letter written to James Crossley in 1837: 'I think you will be glad to hear that I propose visiting Manchester for a few days next week, when I hope to spend some pleasant hours with you...I want to consult you about my new romance which is a tale of the reign of George the first -- and as that monarch cuts a conspicuous figure in the story, I shall really be thankful if you can lend me any memoirs, or other matter relating to him, or put me in the way of finding them...It is my intention to introduce Jack Sheppard" (Carver). Divided into three epochs with time compressed as in a three-act play, Ainsworth's novel traces the entangled stories of two apprentices, Thames Darrell and Jack Sheppard. With fluid movement between the two stories, Ainsworth … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Alston
Glasgow: Smith & Elder & Co, 1839. Front and back cover scratched and damaged although still in good shape. Foxing too. Please feel free to make an offer. All offers will be considered. This book was made a specimen (there is no other copy) of John Alstons' improved method of writing for the blind. This book is the first edition of Braille in plain English by John Alston and is accompanied by a letter, in Braille, from John Alston. This book was publisher in 1839 and is, I believe, to be the only one every made. Braille was originally invented in france by Louis Braille but John Alston invented the british version later on. About the book The Westminster Shorter Catechism is a catechism written in 1646 and 1647 by the Westminster Assembly, a synod of English and Scottish theologians and laymen intended to bring the Church of England into greater conformity with the Church of Scotland. The assembly also produced the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Larger Catechism. A version without Scripture citations was completed on 25 November 1647 and presented to the Long Parliament, and Scripture citations were added on 14 April 1649. Catechesis is a practice of teaching the Christian faith. New converts to Christianity were taught through lectures during the first four centuries of the Church's existence, but this practice was largely abandoned with the rise of Christendom. Christian humanists and Protestant Reformers sought to revive the practice, including the Reformed. John Calvin's Genevan Catechism was especially influential among the British Reformed. MONTGOMERY, G. W. [George Washington]
Wiley and Putnam, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 195pp. A good or better copy in the publisher's green blind-stamped cloth. Boards somehwat worn and faintly soiled. Internally clean with a few scant markings to the endpapers (no library markings). Some present but mild dampstains to the page block. The author was the son of John Montgomery, an Irish-born Boston merchant, who had relocated to Spain. The younger Montgomery was educated in England, and worked as a diplomat for the United States. Uncommonly worldly for his time, this tome recounts the author's travels through Guatemala during the period immediately following the establishment of hte Monroe Doctrine. While known to libraries, this is a scarce volume in the trade, having last appeared at auction in 1997, and selling well over the high estimate. Sabin 50139. Good +. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Dickens, Charles. 1812 - 1870]. By "Boz".
Paris: Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., 1839. 1st edition thus. [4], 367, [1 (blank)] pp. Untrimmed. 8vo. 8-7/8" x 5-3/8". Period brown quarter-leather with marbled boards. Gilt spine lettering. General binding wear & rubs to boards. Foxing. Small, neat pos to ffep upper corner. A VG copy. Item #12964.1 For many years, it was thought the 1846 Bradbury & Evans edition was the first 'octavo' edition (cf. Eckel, p. 62). This Galignanai edition obviously deserves consideration for that appellation, though it's scarcity undoubtedly contributed to the 1846's notation as such in the Dickens' literature. Not in Eckel, Gimbel, or VanderPoel. [Attributes: First Edition]

Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a particularly rare Dickens publication, in the form of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., Paris, 1839. Complete. 8vo. It was long thought that the 1846 Bradbury and Evans Edition of this title was the first in one-volume, so this scarce edition merits bibliographical note, for it appeared seven-years hence. It is not mentioned in Eckel or Gimbel, presumably the reason being neither had located a copy themselves. Bound in contemporaneous green calf, over marbled boards. The spine finely decorated in gilt. Original marbled endpapers. All page edges untrimmed. Externally it remains in pleasing order; the calf only predictably rubbed, but this is commensurate with age. The hinges remain very firm. Internally, save the odd sporadic spot, it remains delightfully clean throughout. Overall, this volume will add greatly to any serious Dickens collection; not a title often seen on the open market, this is indeed an opportunity not to be missed. [Attributes: First Edition]

Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a VERY rare First Edition of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. 624p.p. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's primary vertically-ribbed blue cloth, blind-stamped panels to the boards. The title, author's name and publication date name in gilt to the spine, with Charles abbreviated to 'Chas'. Externally the spine and boards are largely sound, with only occasional extraneous wear, commensurate with age, in places. A professional repair to the head and both hinges of the spine. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled to the textblock. The plates have the predictable marginal toning and browning in places. Overall, to find an example of this title is indeed rare, particularly bound in such a rare ORIGINAL publisher's binding. One of the best-loved works of the C19th, this fine and scarce example would grace any collection, and it comes highly recommended.
