[Click Below for Full Description]

This work is a constitution for the Ancient Grand Lodge of England, which was formed in 1751. This formation brought together the lodges and Masons who believed themselves to be of an older Masonic tradition, moving away and not allying themselves with the 1717 Moderns Grand Lodge. The Ancient Grand Lodge of England was dissolved in 1813. The work was written against the Modern Freemasons, at a time when the Ancients wanted to retain Freemasonry at its purist holy form, and the Modernists wanted to change Masonry and wished to remove the old ways. The title refers to the biblical Ahiman and Rezon, likening the Ancients to Ahiman, and the Rezon also as the rivals to the Modernist movement. This edition with added lectures, and a Masonic ritual. Written by Laurence Dermott, an Irish Freemason who was the Worshipful Master of Lodge No. 26 in Dublin, and the Grand Secretary of the Ancient Grand Lodge of England. [Crockett, Davy]: Alken, Henry
London: Drawn & Engraved by H. Alken, 1839. Colored engraving, with gum arabic highlights, 13 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches. Repaired tear in upper left corner of the sheet, outside the neatline and not affecting the image. Very good. Matted, framed, and glazed. From Alken's series "Sporting Anecdotes," specifically the story "Scenes with Uncle Sam," which appeared in the January, 1839, first number of the THE SPORTING REVIEW. The quote beneath the image describes the scene pictured in the engraving, in which a character named Judge Jobson comes upon two elk. The text of the caption is taken directly from page 28 of the story in THE SPORTING REVIEW, which is credited to a writer named "Wildrake," and reads: "On one occasion I was hunting Elk, and getting a good sight upon two fine Bucks close together, I lowered one, and starting from behind the tree which had concealed me, run forward to finish him off with my knife: but his companion, instead of making off as I expected, turned furious, and stood his ground, stamping and tearing up the earth, whilst his eyes flashed fire, and snorting so loudly, that he seemed to blow a puff-breath from his nostrils, until at last I was fairly obliged to beat a retreat, and clamber up the nearest tree to avoid his charge: once fairly up, I reloaded my rifle, and sent him off with a leaden pill in his left shoulder." The scene captures the moment at which the "furious" buck blows a "puff-breath from his nostrils" while Judge Jobson raises his arms and his rifle, presumably in the moments before he "beat a retreat." A handsome hunting scene playin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clement C. Moore
This listing is for a very early printing of "A Visit From St. Nicholas," dated 1839. First edition, thus. It is one of the earliest complete and unabridged printings of the poem in book form, including the old English and Dutch parlance (thro', Dunder, Blixen, etc.). Rare to find today, especially in nice condition, the book is a collection of prose and poetry used in schools for speech exercises. While anthologies were instrumental in putting the poem in front of mature audiences, elocution books introduced it to children and was a strong contributor to the growing awareness of the poem. Still obscure at the time, the poem was published here anonymously and called "Christmas Times," one of several alternate titles used in very early printings. It is interesting to note that the editor actually recognized St. Nicholas as "Santa Claus" via a footnote to the poem--pretty amazing since it would be many years before the Dutch, German, and English personages would be combined to form the iconic American Santa Claus. The book measures 4.5 x 7.5 inches. Construction is in-board leather binding with 504 pages. At 180 years old, it is in very good condition overall. The covers shows moderate wear considering age. The leather has become stiff with a bit of bowing at the outer corners. The pages have foxing throughout, some areas more than others, and there are a few uneven pages at the end. Binding is tight. Still a handsome book that displays well. "A Visit From St. Nicholas" is found on page 359. On consignment from a lifelong Christmas collector. Shipped Priority/Insured. [Laurence Dermott]
[Laurence Dermott], 1839 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce copy of Laurence Dermott's important freemason work 'Ahiman Rezon', here with added lectures. A scarce work. Dermott is best known for this work, which was originally published in 1756. Lodge of Harmony Library label to the front pastedown. Lodge of Harmony library label to the tail of the spine. Condition: In the original quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Minor marks to the boards and spine. Small amount of loss of paper to the rear board. Tipped-in to the titlepage is a genuine clipped signature, by Dickens. The ink is his favoured blue, and this remains pleasingly legible. A COA will be provided to the purchaser. Bound in a wonderful publisher's deluxe half black morocco, over marbled boards. To the spine is the title in gilt, and raised bands in blind. Original marbled endpapers. Externally the spine and boards are largely bright, with only occasional wear in places. Internally, it is delightfully clean and fresh, with only the odd sporadic spot in places. Overall, to find an example of this title is indeed rare, particularly extra-illustrated, with signature, publisher-bound and in the first state. One of the best-loved works of the C19th, this fine and scarce example would grace any collection, and it comes highly recommended. Part of the Louisiana Purchase, Iowa Territory, which included parts of present-day Minnesota and the Dakotas, was created in 1838. It became a state in 1846. According to Eberstadt, it was "for many years the law of all the country west of the Rocky Mountains between the forty-second and forty-ninth parallels of latitude." Phinney, 1833. The Bible itself is important as well- the publishers are legendary- The Phinney brothers, Henry and Elihu, carried on the business their father, Elihu Phinney, had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press, bookshop, and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper, a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society, learned to set type in his shop for fun (Hills, 69). The younger Phinneys, however, were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock (which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York) from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York. ---------- This is a truly unique piece of history....an early Cooperstown King James Version Bible, The same publisher and edition Used by LDS leader Joseph Smith to help translate the Book of Mormon!
