Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a VERY rare FIRST ISSUE of the First Edition of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. 624p.p. All of Smith's textual points here present, including 'latter' to p.160, and 'visiter' to p.121. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's deluxe half Morocco, over cloth boards. To the spine are raised bands, finely tooled in gilt, and the title in gilt. The author's name 'Chas. Dickens' to the spine, along with 'LONDON. 1839' to the foot. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. Externally the spine and boards are largely bright, with only occasional extraneous wear, commensurate with age, in places. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled. The plates have the predictable odd spot/toning in places. Overall, to find an example of this title is indeed rare, particularly bound in such a rare ORIGINAL publisher's binding, and in the first state. One of the best-loved works of the C19th, this fine and scarce example would grace any collection, and it comes VERY highly recommended. 1839. "...The greatest of the anti-slavery pamphlets; in all probability, the most crushing indictment of any institution ever written." Historian Dwight L. Dumond, in reference to American Slavery: As It Is. Here we offer the first edition of the most influential of the United States abolition sources and the first fusion of the anti-slavery movement with the women's rights movement: American Slavery: As It Is, by Theodore White Weld, published anonymously by The American Anti-Slavery Society, New York City, in 1839. This extremely rare volume is filled with narratives of victims and witnesses to the depraved institution of American slavery. It was wildly influential, providing vivid, documented accounts for the anti-slavery movement and even serving as a source work for Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin that was still 13 years away. With the modern acceptance of symbols of the confederacy as "heritage," this seminal volume is still relevant today. Recently very attractively rebound in full calf leather with acid-free black endpapers. Text block is age-toned and darkened on edge from perhaps once sitting too close to the fireplace, as the last page appears soot-darkened (please see pics.) Title page has pen-and-ink markings, "Mechanics Library" rubber stamp, and a Providence Public Library blindstamp. Binding is very tight and square, text pages are durable, bright, and crisp with a few minor edge tears and various foxing and light moisture stains throughout. A very readable copy in a wonderful rebinding! 224 pages; measures approximately 9 x 5.75-inches. This wond … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a particularly rare Dickens publication, in the form of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., Paris, 1839. Complete. 8vo. It was long thought that the 1846 Bradbury and Evans Edition of this title was the first in one-volume, so this scarce edition merits bibliographical note, for it appeared seven-years hence. It is not mentioned in Eckel or Gimbel, presumably the reason being neither had located a copy themselves. Bound in contemporaneous green calf, over marbled boards. The spine finely decorated in gilt. Original marbled endpapers. All page edges untrimmed. Externally it remains in pleasing order; the calf only predictably rubbed, but this is commensurate with age. The hinges remain very firm. Internally, save the odd sporadic spot, it remains delightfully clean throughout. Overall, this volume will add greatly to any serious Dickens collection; not a title often seen on the open market, this is indeed an opportunity not to be missed. [Attributes: First Edition]

CUSTINE La Russie en 1839. Paris, Amyot, 1843, complet en 4 volumes in-8, 2ff.-XXXIpp.-354pp. - 2ff.-416pp. - 2ff.-470pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

BAYLE (A.L.J.)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. First edition in book form of one of Dickens' most popular novels. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, with the steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens after the painting by David Maclise and engraved plate entitled "Specimen of the Illustrations of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist present, illustrated with 39 etchings by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") including plates 1-4 in the earliest states with the publisher's imprint, plate 29 in the fourth state, and with "latter" for "letter" on p.160 (Hatton & Cleaver pp.131-160; Smith I:5). In very good condition with some toning throughout. The plot, the characters, the dialogue, everything about Nicholas Nickleby "has the feel of theatre; it is as if Dickens saw human life conducted among lights of the stage, making it somehow larger and brighter than the reality" (Ackroyd, 283). Mary Shelley
1839. SHELLEY, Mary Wollstonecraft - Frederick Schiller. Frankenstein: Or, The Modern Prometheus - bound with - The Ghost-Seer. London: Richard Bentley, 1839. THIRD EDITION, FOURTH PRINTING, of the first revised edition of Shelley's masterpiece and the first to contain an illustration. First printing of engraved frontis dated 1831. The frontis depicts the creature coming to life. Bound in contemporary 1/2 tan calf, spine expertly relined with the original spine laid down. Text clean and bright a VERY GOOD copy. In her introduction, Shelley contextualizes the creation of her tale: "It proved a wet, ungenial summer, and incessant rain often confined us for days to the house. Some volumes of ghost stories, translated from the German into French, fell into our hands... 'We will each write a ghost story,' said Lord Byron; and his proposition was acceded to" Apparently quite scarce. Auction records locate only 3 copies appearing at auction over the last 40 years. The last one in 2000. This printing was apparently issued with and without the additional engraved title-page dated 1831.
