WYLD, James.
London: James Wyld, 1839. Engraved map with original hand colour, dissected and laid on linen as issued, total 790 x 1075mm, with original slipcase with printed publisher's label. A detailed map showing from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Nile, east through Arabia, Persia, the Tartar khanates and Afghanistan, to the borders of China and Burma. The two insets show the waterways of the Bosphorus and the Dandanelles. It ostensibly shows the land and sea routes to India, but of greater interest is the depiction of the theatre of the 'Great Game' during one of its pivotal phases, the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). The 'Great Game' was a name coined by the British intelligence agent Arthur Conelly for the competition between Great Britain and Russia for control of the khanates of Central Asia (for example Bukhara), the lands that kept the Russians from threatening the northern borders of British India. At the time this map was published the British had invaded Afghanistan in an attempt to make the country a buffer state. However the following year the Kabul garrison was slaughtered as it retreated through Gandamak Pass towards the safety of India. The same year Conolly was publicly beheaded in a square in Bukhara. The ownership inscription is that of General Thomas Montagu Steele (1820-90), dated 1846 when, as a young officer in the Coldstream Guards, he was aide-de-camp to the governor of Madras. During the Crimean War he was military secretary to Lord Raglan and was mentioned in dispatches, earning himself the appointment as aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria in 1855. He was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beagle, under the command of Captain Fitzroy, R.N. from 1832 to 1836. Octavo (225 x 140 mm). First separate edition, printed from the same sheets as Volume III of Fitzroy's Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's ships Adventure and Beagle, but with prelims [i-iv] cancelled and [v-vi] discarded. "His first published book is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed" (Freeman). Darwin noted in his autobiography that "the voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career … As far as I can judge of myself I worked to the utmost during the voyage from the mere pleasure of investigation, and from my strong desire to add a few facts to the great mass of facts in natural science. But I was also ambitious to take a fair place among scientific men … The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than that of any other books." "An important milestone in geology, for it established the oldest fossil-bearing classification then known"(ODNB). In 1831 Murchison went to the border of England and Wales, to attempt to discover whether the greywacke rocks underlying the Old Red Sandstone could be grouped into a definite order of succession. The result was the establishment of the Silurian system under which were grouped, for the first time, a remarkable series of formations, each replete with distinctive organic remains other than and very different from those of the other rocks of England. 'Murchison was the first to establish a uniform sequence of Transition strata, to which he gave the name "Silurian" after a British tribe; these strata constituted a major system with uniform fossil remains, displaying an abundance of invertebrates and a complete lack... of the remains of vertebrates or land plants' (Norman). REDDING, Cyrus.]
London: Whittaker and Co., 1839. Small octavo. Original brown cloth, red morocco label to spine, title and vignette to front cover in gilt. Contemporary bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, pencilled note to front free endpaper identifying the copy as coming from the library of Henry D. Batten. Spine a little sunned, faint stain to title page. A lovely copy. First edition of this handbook for the amateur wine enthusiast. "Redding's involvement with wine, and French wine in particularly, came about by accident. In 1814 he was sent to Paris as correspondent for The Examiner. Redding spent this time visiting the vineyards of France and Italy and recalled. 'I cannot look back without pleasure to seasons spent in lands of the vine, not in the town, but in the heart of the country'" (Gabler). In 1833 he published A History and Description of Modern Wines, the first book in English which dealt exclusively with modern wines, and which is still cited by Gabler as the best reference for the wines of the period. The present work is intended for the beginner, and is written in an engaging, unpretentious style; chapter headings include "buying wine", "choice of a cellar", "racking wines", "prices of wine", "wine consumption", and "wine sayings of my uncle". For this last chapter, a contemporary owner has marked with a pencil their favourite avuncular aphorisms. Gabler, Wine into Words, p. 221. [Attributes: First Edition]

The government of France was disturbed over some of the attitudes of Rosas: declaration of war against Santa Cruz and the position of French citizens in Buenos Aires. But the question of the free navigation of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers was the cause of England later uniting with France in the blockade of Río de la Plata. Particularly in this case the commercial interests of the European countries that sailed these waters, the interests of the interior provinces, and at the same time, the internal rivalries of the authorities of the Banda Oriental were united. Manuel Oribe and Fructuoso Rivera disputed the presidency, supported, respectively by Rosas and France in the first place, and by Brazil in the case of Rivera. Remarkably tight and square binding; very clean, bright and crisp text and frontispiece. 365 pages in all. The book measures 6 3/4 x 4 3/8 x 1-inches. If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear! Here we offer a very early, 1839 third edition of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's iconic classic horror story, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, published by Richard Bentley, London, one of the two original publishers of Shelley's final 1831 revision of her 1818 work. This edition includes the original first visual representation of the monster, a frontispiece steel engraving by Theodore von Holst depicting the creature coming to life. This hugely important novel introduced the 19th Century to the themes of reckless industrialization, the struggle between the religious and scientific realms, and even far fore-visioned the psychological and cognitive revelations that were still more than a century away. The book was once a purchase from Bauman Rare Books, and it comes with Bauman's original description of the copy and notes on the edition (please see last pic.) Also included in the auction is an 1831 copy of "The Spirit of the Annuals," a 467-page palm-sized (5.5 x 3.5-inch) literary collection including the supernatural short story, "Transformation" by Mrs. Shelley, who is referred to therein as "...the author of Frankenstein." "The Spirit of the Annuals" has a repaired binding. This copy of Frankenstein was pro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Their names were Reeza Koolee Meerza, Najaf Koolee Meerza, (Wali,) Taymoor Meerza: they were the sons of Firmân Firmân, late Prince of Shiraz and Fars, grandsons of Fathali Shah, the late king of Persia, and first cousins to the present Majesty Mohammed Shah of Persia.? Edward William Lane
London: Charles Knight and Co, 1839. Complete in three volumes. An excellent and sought after edition still in the original publisher's boards with good patina. A new translation from the Arabic, with copious notes by Edward William Lane, Author of The Modern Egyptians. Illustrated by many hundred engravings on wood, from original designs by William Harvey. One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of West and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights, from the first English language edition (1706), which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment. The work was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators, and scholars across West, Central, South Asia and North Africa. The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. In particular, many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era, while others, especially the frame story, are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work Hazar Afsan (A Thousand Tales) which in turn relied partly on Indian elements. CONDITION In publisher's original grey cloth bindings with labels to the spines. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Spines are cocked. Internally, generally firmly bound. Front hinge is tender in volume III. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered light foxing. Overall Condition: Very Good.

Stendhal
Paris Ambroise Dupont 1839. Two volumes, 8° (203x123 mm). I. [4], 402 pages. II. [4], 445 pages. Both volumes complete with half-title. Lacking – as with the majority of recorded copies – the last leaf of the second volume, a cancel with advertising. Contemporary brown cloth, blind-stamped with floral pattern. Smooth spines, divided into compartments by gilt fillets, title and volume numbering lettered in gold. Blue speckled edges. Pastedowns and flyleaves in yellow paper. Hinges and corners somewhat rubbed. A good copy, some stains.Provenance: armorial stamp on the half-title of both volumes, the same coat of arms stamped in gilt at the foot of the spines. First edition, in its rare first issue, of the eighth novel published by the celebrated French writer Stendhal, mentioned here as the author of another famous roman, Le Rouge et Noir, which appeared in 1830/31. La chartreuse de Parme was written in only fifty-six days, between 4 November and 26 December 1838. It was inspired by both Stendhal's desire to write a Napoleonic novel centred on the Battle of Waterloo and his interest in the life of Alexander Farnese – who would later become Pope Paul III – which featured numerous parallels with that of the novel's main character, Fabrice del Dongo. The present copy, printed on vellum paper (papier velin) and without the indication 'Deuxième édition' on the title-page, represents a rare example from the first issue of this edition. "The various copies of the first edition of the Chartreuse de Parme that I saw were all on vellum paper; there is, under the … [Click Below for Full Description]
