Robinson, J.W. and J.R.
Printed by Johnston & Edwards, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. A Native American village, Pumpkintown (a corruption of "Potemkin town") is no longer in existence, but was originally located in McMinn County, Tennessee near present day Athens. 136 p. with printed tables throughout. 16mo. Original printed roan-backed boards, with a later leather spine. The contents are browned, with some pencil notations to the prefatory and concluding leaves. Partial separation of the rear pastedown from the rear board; detachment is not a concern. Though the front hinge is cracked, the binding is still quite sound. The boards are worn and soiled, with some shallow loss at the tips and occasional minor scuffing. However, the titles on the front and the printer's advertisement on the verso are still legible. Scarce, OCLC locates only five copies. Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Charles Dickens
For sale is a particularly rare Dickens publication, in the form of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., Paris, 1839. Complete. 8vo. It was long thought that the 1846 Bradbury and Evans Edition of this title was the first in one-volume, so this scarce edition merits bibliographical note, for it appeared seven-years hence. It is not mentioned in Eckel or Gimbel, presumably the reason being neither had located a copy themselves. Bound in contemporaneous green calf, over marbled boards. The spine finely decorated in gilt. Original marbled endpapers. All page edges untrimmed. Externally it remains in pleasing order; the calf only predictably rubbed, but this is commensurate with age. The hinges remain very firm. Internally, save the odd sporadic spot, it remains delightfully clean throughout. Overall, this volume will add greatly to any serious Dickens collection; not a title often seen on the open market, this is indeed an opportunity not to be missed. [Attributes: First Edition]

Edward SANDERS (1801 - 1843) & Charles Frederick NORTH (1815 - 1906), Surveyor-Cartographers] / Henry M. SMITH (fl. 1837 - 1863), Draftsman.
Calcutta, December 11. Manuscript, pen and ink on wove paper, mounted upon another sheet of old paper (Good, large old tear traversing much of sheet, but with no loss and not affecting track of mapping, otherwise clean and sharp), 54 x 63.5 cm (21.5 x 25 inches). A fine manuscript map of the route of Major Todd’s 1839 British expedition from Kandahar to Herat, resulting in an important diplomatic mission in the early days of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42), after a ground-breaking itinerary survey by the military engineers Edward Sanders and Charles Frederick North, copied by India’s most esteemed cartographic draftsman, Henry M. Smith, and notarized at the Surveyor General of India’s Office, Calcutta; reserved for ‘top-secret’, high-level official use. - This fine manuscript map depicts the route of Major Elliott D’Arcy Todd’s expedition from Kandahar to Herat, in the summer of 1839. Undertaken during the early days of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42), Todd led an important diplomatic mission from Kandahar (the first and largest British base in Afghanistan) to Herat, the strategically vital western gateway to the country. The objective was to convince the local ruler to support Britain, counteracting intense Russo-Persian overtures. This scene transpired within the larger theatre of the ‘Great game’, the epic, decades-long Anglo-Russian contest for domination of the South-Central Asia. The present itinerary map is predicated upon careful surveys undertaken by the military engineers Edward Sanders and Charles Frederick North during the Todd party’s 34-day long jour … [Click Below for Full Description]

After her death in 1835 they were republished widely, usually as collections of individual lyrics and not the longer, annotated works and integrated series that made up her books. For surviving women poets, like Britons Caroline Norton and Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Americans Lydia Sigourney and Frances Harper, the French Amable Tastu and German Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, and others, she was a valued model, or (for Elizabeth Barrett Browning) a troubling predecessor; and for male poets including Tennyson and Longfellow, an influence less acknowledged. Hemans' critical reputation has been re-examined in recent years. Her work has resumed a role in standard anthologies and in classrooms and seminars and literary studies, especially in the U. S. It is likely that further poems will be familiar to new readers, such as "The Image in Lava," "Evening Pray … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leather Binding Overall Condition: Very Good This book weighs 4 KG when packed Australia Postage: £ Free UK Postage: £ 4.49 US Postage: £ 39.99 EU Postage: £ 26.99 European Postage: £ 36.99 Asia Postage: £ 65.99 Worldwide Postage: £ 99.99 DESCRIPTION Second edition. This biography has been called the second most admirable in the English language, after Boswell's Life of Johnson. It was published a great number of Scott's letters. Lockhart's account of the business transactions between Scott and the Ballantynes and Constable caused an outcry; and in the discussion that followed he showed bitterness in his pamphlet The Ballantyne Humbug handled. The proceeds, which were considerable, Lockhart resigned for the benefit of Scott's creditors. Scott was the first English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. SAMS Joseph
Sole edition. Lithograph title-page & 33 lithograph mainly hand-coloured plates. Small folio. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked, spine gilt, black morocco label to upper board. London, Executed for, & under the immediate Inspection of the Proprietor, After a successful early career as a Darlington bookseller, Joseph Sams (1784 - 1860) set out in search of antiquities. Travelling to Egypt and Palestine from 1826 to 1828, he amassed a valuable collection of Egyptian papyri, mummies and sarcophagi. A devout Quaker, he is purported to have visited every identifiable location mentioned in the New Testament. This profitable expedition enabled him on his return to establish himself as a dealer of antiquities as well as books and manuscripts, and extend his business to include a London premises, at 56 Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn. This clearly paid off, as in 1834 the British Museum received a parliamentary grant to purchase many of the items in his collection for £2,500. The remaining antiquities were exhibited in London, having been augmented with acquisitions made from the collections of Henry Salt, and Charles Bogaert. In 1839 the following fine catalogue of hand coloured lithographic plates was issued to advertise the sale. The British Museum turned down this second collection, and instead it was purchased by Joseph Mayer, who exhibited it along with his other antiquities at Great Colquitt Street, Liverpool. In 1867, Mayer presented his formidable collection to the Liverpool Museum, at which time it was valued at £80,000. Devastatingly, many of these it … [Click Below for Full Description]
