LARCOMB, Thomas A., & Sir Richard GRIFFITH.
FIRST EDITION, first issue of the second published geological map and railway map of Ireland. Griffith's first geological map of Ireland, on a scale of 1 inch to 10 miles, was published in July 1838 to accompany the second report of the Irish Railway Commission. The publication of the present much larger map, on a scale of 1 inch to 4 miles, was delayed but it finally appeared in March 1839. The present copy is uncoloured geologically, but it appears that such copies are very rare and were only coloured to order. "It was remarkably detailed..." (DSB). The first railway map of Ireland was contained in the same second Report of the Irish Railway Commission (the first Report does not appear to have included a map), and in the same way was succeeded by the present map. "Title, left-hand top corner. Legend with 26 tablets in left-hand margin. Signed: 'Dublin, March 28th, 1839 Richard Griffith.' References, authorities and scales in lower margin. Below these is the MS. signature of Thos. A. Larcomb, Lieut. R.Eng. (in charge of the Trigonometrical Survey of Ireland at this time and responsible for the engraved basis of the present map and plate)... Coloured examples of this map have not been seen, but an uncoloured copy is in the Library of the Geological Survey, London" (Davis). A.G. Davis, "Notes on Griffith's geological maps of Ireland" in J. Soc. Bibl. of Natural History, 2, 6 (Oct. 1950), pp. 209-211. For particulars of Griffith's life and work, particularly the progress of his geological survey of Ireland, see M. H. Temminck, L.F.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Greene, John P.
Printed by R.P. Broooks, Cincinnati. 43pp. Original plain blue wrappers; wrappers detached. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase. First edition, second issue. In 1838, Missouri governor Lilburn Boggs ordered: "The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State, if necessary." The author John Portineus Greene (a brother-in-law of Brigham Young) was appointed to gather documentary evidence of the ensuing repression, some of which he witnessed personally, and which he published circa July 1839. "This gives the story of the expulsion from the Mormon point of view. The expulsion created such a wave of condemnation against the Governor and authorities of the state of Missouri that two years later the General Assembly of the state published DOCUMENT CONTAINING THE CORRESPONDENCE, ORDERS, &c. IN RELATION TO THE DISTURBANCES WITH THE MORMONS. Greene's FACTS gives much material from the rare Assembly Document of 1841. Both are essential to the history of the Church" - Streeter. This second state is distinguished by a title page with a different setting of type, omitting "or Latter Day Saints" from the title, and by having the plain blue wrappers rather than printed wrappers. There is also a difference in the signature markings; here page 25 is marked D, while in the first state it is marked C, although they are otherwise clearly the same setting of type. This copy descended through the family of the author. Only three copies of either issue have been traced at auction since 1968. This is the first copy this firm has handled. CRAWLEY 55. Cherubini, Francesco
dall'Imp. Regia Stamperia, 1839. Cfr.

Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix, Komponist (1809-1847)
Leipzig, 18. III, 1839. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.

Audubon, John James
Edinburgh, 1839. Five volumes. A few in-text illustrations. Half title in each volume. Large, thick octavos. Modern buckram, printed paper labels. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Some light foxing, primarily to first and last few leaves. Tear in half title of second volume, repaired with tape. Very good. This is Audubon's text, designed to accompany the elephant folio edition of THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, giving sketches of the birds described therein. Of great interest are Audubon's accounts of his travels and adventures in the American hinterland, scattered through the volumes as part of the bird descriptions and as separate anecdotes. Includes accounts of his experiences in the Florida Keys, along the Mississippi, and in Louisiana and Kentucky in the 1820s and '30s. Audubon published the text separately from the double elephant folio plates in order to avoid a stricture of the British Copyright Act of 1709 which would have required him to deposit a set of the plates with each of nine depository libraries in the United Kingdom. The publication date on the titlepage of the fifth volume is incorrectly printed as "1849." One of the classic texts of American natural history and travel. HOWES A389, "aa." MEISEL III, p.406. SABIN 2366. CLARK II:179 (ref). SERVIES 1532, 1677, 1743, 2120, 2302.

Brande, William Thomas
London, 1839. Brande, William Thomas (1788-1866). Autograph letter signed to Alfred Swaine Taylor (1806-80). 4pp. [London] The Royal Mint, 21 October 1839. 233 x 185 mm. Last page a bit dust-soiled, but very good otherwise. Docketed in Taylor's hand. Letter discussing "photogenic drawing" from chemist William Thomas Brande to toxicologist and forensic expert Alfred Swaine Taylor, who was also a pioneer in photography. Taylor began experimenting with photography in early 1839, shortly after Daguerre and Fox Talbot announced the discoveries of their respective photographic methods. He invented a way to produce photographic paper by impregnating it with ammoniacal silver nitrate and was one of the first to use photography to "photocopy" prints. In 1840 Taylor published his findings in a pamphlet titled On the Art of Photogenic Drawing, which included instructions on how make photographs using his methods. The first part of Brande's letter, written in the fall of 1839, reads: Many thinks my dear sir for your kind note. I will send a proper messenger to your house for the photogenic drawings, which will be truly acceptable, as I have sadly failed in the greater number of my attempts. I cannot get an even ground, except upon bibulous paper, and that will not admit of the due washing requisite for fixing the image-the truth is I want tact and practice, and hope that some day when a part of my labours has been transferred to my colleague, that you will allow me to see you go through the whole operation.
