      1839. 8vo. (2), 47, (1) pp. Marbled boards. Only edition of Wallin's dissertation, a study of the differences between classical and modern Arabic. Like his more famous contemporary J. L. Burckhardt, the Finnish orientalist Wallin was not only fluent in Arabic, but also capable of passing for a scholarly sheikh. Indeed, the two explorers are often compared: "I see many points of resemblance between them, the same iron constitution, the same versatility, the same indomitable energy, the same imperturbable temper" (H. C. Rawlinson, quoted in Henze). Financially backed by his alma mater, the University of Helsinki, Wallin departed for the Middle East in 1843 and set out on his expeditions from Cairo under the name of Abd al-Wali. "In 1845, proceeding southeast across the wastelands of the Nafud Desert, he reached Ha'il then continued by force of circumstances southward to Medina and Mecca. From there he returned to Egypt" (Howgego). After his return to Europe in 1850, Wallin was made Professor of oriental languages at Helsingfors. His notes provide a detailed overview of the political and religious movements and the role of the different tribes in Palestine and especially in Saudi Arabia. - Browned as common.       First edition in English, small slim 4to, viii, 66pp., 1 lithograph plate by the Chinese artist Kirequa captioned 'Lithographed at Canton 1839', author's presentation inscription partially erased from title-page, with small neat ownership stamp, cont. quarter calf, upper spine defective, joints cracked, marbled paper boards and endpapers, a very good copy.Robert Thom (1807 -1846), an English nineteenth century Chinese language translator and diplomat based in Canton who worked for the trading house Jardine, Matheson & Co. to whom this work is dedicated. When hostilities began between the British and the ruling Chinese Qing Dynasty in late 1839, Thom, along with other Chinese translators including John Robert Morrison and Karl Gützlaff provided the necessary language interface between the warring factions. This translation is a story from the Ming anthology Chin-ku ch'i-kuan which contained 40 stories and was published during the Ming Dynasty sometime between 1633 and 1644.

Recently rebound to style in black half morocco, gilt panelled spines with owl and eagle motifs, contemporary marbled sides, speckled edges, endleaves renewed. 500 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Audubon by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembley and others, printed by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia (plates 1-135, 151-500) or George Endicott of New York (plates 136-150), numerous wood-engraved anatomical figures in text. A few plates trimmed by the binder with concomitant shaving of a few captions (encroaching on the plate itself in only one instance). An excellent set. First octavo edition of Audubon's "Great National Work", the first complete edition and the first American edition, the original double-elephant folio was published in Edinburgh and London between 1827 and 1838. A very handsome set, the plates clean and fresh, of the "most beautiful, popular, and important natural history books published in America in the nineteenth century... representing the best of pre-Civil War American lithography and giving Audubon the opportunity finally to display his scholarship and genius to a large American audience for the first time" (Ron Tyler). The plates, here accompanied by the text for the first time, were reduced and variously modified from the Havell engravings in the double-elephant folio. Seven new species are figured and seventeen others, previously described in the Ornithological Biography but not illustrated, are pictured for the first time. Audubon may have been prompted to publish the reduced version of his double-elephant folio by the appearance in 1839 of John Kirk Townsend's rival Ornithology of the United States, or, as he writes in the introduction to the present work, he may have succumbed to public demand and his wish that a work similar to his large work should be published but "at such a price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his Library". The first edition of the octavo work now represents the only realistic opportunity that exists for collectors to own an entire collection of Audubon images in a form that was overseen and approved by the great artist himself.

        "The Assabet". Autograph manuscript. N. p., 18. VII. 1839.

      1839. 4to. 2½ pp. on 2 ff. All 12 stanzas of his poem "The Assabet", which he also entered in his "Journal" (and dated 18 July 1839). Composed two days before Ellen Sewall's arrival, "The Assabet" was probably written with Ellen's brother Edmund in mind, though it seems to be entirely appropriate for Thoreau's time with Ellen during her visit, with its images of a boat trip. (The images are also an early treatment of Thoreau's Concord-Merrimack boat trip undertaken in August and September 1839 with his brother John, which he described in "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers".) This is the actual poem Thoreau sent to Ellen Sewall in Scituate in the late summer of 1839. Interestingly, the present poem constitutes the first poem Henry David Thoreau gave to Ellen Sewall. In 1840, Thoreau proposed to Ellen. Her father, a Unitarian minister, found Thoreau to be a rabble-rouser with his antislavery and freethinking ideas. He instructed his daughter to reject the offer. Thoreau never married. - "Up this pleasant stream let's row | For the livelong summer's day, | Sprinkling foam where'er we go, | In weather as white as driven snow; | Ply the oars, away! away! || Now we glide along the shore, | Plucking lillies as we go, | While the yellow sanded floor | Doggedly resists the oar, | Like some turtle, dull and slow. || Now we stem the middle tide, | Ploughing through the deepest soil, | Ridges pile on either side, | While we through the furrow glide, | Reaping bubbles for our toil. || Dew before and drought behind, | Onward all doth seem to fly, | Naught contents the eager mind, | Only rapids now are kind, | Forward are the earth and sky. || Sudden music strikes the ear | Leaking out from yonder bank | Fit such voyageurs to cheer - | Sure there must be fairies [naiads] here, | Who have kindly played this prank [...]". - Marginal waterstaining and fraying repaired; full transcription available on request.

      London Printed by J. L. Cox for private circulation only 1839 - First edition. 4to (2.62 x 20cm.), [viii], 218pp., half-title, 3 lithographed plates, polished black morocco by T. Lloyd, inner dentelles, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, plates slightly spotted, a fine copy. Rare privately printed journal of Davidson's attempt to cross the Western Sahara from Tangier to Timbuktoo which ended with his murder in November 1836. John Davidson (1797-1836), an English adventurer, embarked at Falmouth on 1834, taking with him the freed slave Edward Donellan. On arrival at Tangier the British consul begged Davidson to give up his visit to Timbuktu on account of the tribal warfare being waged on the edge of the Sahara, but the explorer pressed on regardless. He arrived at Fez and left for the desert, passing through Marrakesh, and eventually reached the Wadi Num (Noun or Assaka). In the region of Tindouf he was shot dead and his possessions stolen. Donellan continued with the caravan to Timbuktu and was never heard of again. Davidson's letters and most of his journal found their way back to Britain and were privately published in 1839.       1839. 4to. 4 pp. on double leaf. To the Committee for this year's Lower Rhenish Music Festival in Dusseldorf. Mendelssohn, the 1839 Director of the Lower Rhenish Music Festival, writes to the festival's committee recommending the works to be included. "I hasten to answer, as the time is indeed approaching and is beginning to press. Against the march and chorus from the Ruins of Athens, which you are adding to the second day, it is only natural that I have nothing to object; I would suggest putting the piece right after the Eroica Symphony, where it would certainly have a good effect. But I wouldn't know what cantata by Bach to suggest for the second day as now programmed; I don't know any which would fit in as regards the time it needs and even more as regards style; if another piece needs to be selected, I would perhaps suggest the chorus by Haydn 'Des Staubes eitle Sorgen' but it seems enough to me, anyway. In 1833 with you and 1834 in Aachen, the program of the 2nd day was shorter than this; last year in Cologne it was at least no longer, and so I think: 1) Eroica Symph[ony], march and chorus by Beeth[oven], new hymn by Spohr. 2) Overture and Psalm -would be quite a sufficient program. To be sure, if Herr Rietz doesn't keep his promise, quite a substantial overture would have to be selected, to make the second part as interesting as possible. But this time the main thing for me would be if you could manage to have Alceste performed in the theater. You write of the difficulties with the chorus; they are indeed the biggest ones that can place themselves in its way, to my knowledge, but even if they couldn't be removed, I would prefer seeing Alceste performed with a very bad chorus a hundred times more than giving up the idea completely. First, in Alceste the main thing is Alceste herself, then Admet, then Hercules, and then only the chorus, and with a performance to be expected from Frl. von Fassmann and Tichatschek or Eichberger or some other outstanding Admet, the chorus recedes in any case into the background. Then there is the second question if it is impossible to improve the chorus? Couldn't 12-20 of the best chorus singers be brought in from Cologne and Aachen? I would with pleasure come a week earlier myself for this and hold separate rehearsals for the chorus every day to make this performance possible. Finally, several passages could and in such a case would have to be deleted, such as the ball in the second act and similar passages in which the chorus plays too much of a main part, and as I said, that would be that much more feasible as Alceste herself and her and Admet's suffering are definitely the main thing in the opera. As several of your members know, I already felt the urgent wish for something new in the course and sequence of the music festival last year, and I said so. My suggestions on this were perhaps not practical, but now, through this coincidence, the opportunity arises this time in Dusseldorf, at least, of giving the festival a new attraction of the kind I had in mind. If this music festival performs the Messiah on the first day, then the Beethoven symphony with a miscellaneous program, and finally a Gluck opera (and even if it is most inferior in execution and even if it has the worst chorus, but beautifully sung in the main roles and beautifully played by the orchestra), this would indeed be something new, as I wished, and because of that this music festival would be outstanding as compared to all the earlier ones. I would therefore very much wish that this plan, even if it be only the hope of it, be mentioned already in your first tentative announcements - how differently would the music festival appear because of it! In the interest of the public, too; in regard to the box office it would also make a palpable difference. Of course I assume that the performance would have to be considered in conjunction with both the others, and only those would receive tickets to the opera who had attended the music festival on the preceding days or had been participants in it. And even if the prices were not raised, the proceeds would be significant. Not to mention the enjoyment all friends of music would derive from it. I ask you to let me know your answer as soon as possible, as I would, as I said, to this end make my departure earlier, if necessary. In any case your speedy answer is now very much desired, as the time is now fast approaching [...]" (transl.). - In a postscript, Mendelssohn has written: "The fine tenor here, Schmidt, just came to ask if he couldn't take part in the music festival; he would try to arrange things so that he could come there at that time and take a solo pan. I told him you had written Tichatschek, but he claims that he is giving guest performances in Berlin at Pentecost and would thus not be able to come to the Rhine. Another thing: I have asked some supporters of our journal to fetch Herr Erich for a weekly walk, on Sundays (at 11 a.m.), to have a mutual discussion about the journal, its weal and woe, to suggest and adopt alterations, where desirable, etc. etc. Would you like to take part in the walk? Dans cet ouvrage, il défend le projet d'émancipation des esclaves qu'il avait publié en 1838 dans Esclavage et Traite et s'oppose en partie aux conclusions du rapport de la commission de M. de Rémusat chargée d'examiner la proposition de M. Passy sur une émancipation progressive dans les colonies françaises. Bel exemplaire d'épreuve avec les corrections manuscrites autographe de l'auteur. L'édition définitive compte 10 pages de moins que dans cette épreuve, car l'auteur supprima une longue digression sur la politique étrangère de la France. Pour le reste de l'ouvrage, les 48 premières pages sont identiquess à celle de la première édition, ensuite l'auteur a fait des corrections pour reprendre un mot ou une expression.

        Panorama di Roma veduta dalla Torre del Campidoglio

      1839. Litografia, 1839, firmata e datata in basso a destra e sinistra. Bellissima prova, impressa su quattro fogli di carta coeva uniti, leggere ossidazioni, per il resto in ottimo stato di conservazione. Questa panorama è idealmente preso dalla torre del Campidoglio ruotando da sinistra verso destra di 360 gradi, con una raffigurazione che inizia dal Pincio e si chiude a Piazza del Popolo. L'opera è stampata dalla litografia Kier di Venezia e nel margine inferiore reca una leggenda di 69 numeri. L'impianto della veduta è ancora quello di un pittore di tradizione settecentesca, in sintonia con la definizione che lo stesso Caffi, allora trentenne, dava di se stesso: "pittore prospettico". Emilio Re nella biografia sull'artista della mostra romana del 1959 definisce, già allora, "rara" la veduta. Lithograph, 1839, signed and dated on lower right and left. Beautiful work, printed on four sheets of contemporary laid paper then joined together, light oxidations otherwise in excellent condition. This panorama is ideally seen from the tower of the Campidoglio, rotating towards the right side of 360 degrees, starting from the Pincio and ending in Piazza del Popolo. The work has been printed by the Kier lithography in Venice; on lower margin it bears 69 numbers. The setting of the view recalls that of an XVIII century painter, according to the definition that Caffi himself, at the age of thirty, gave of his art: "perspective painter". In his biography of the artist, written on the occasion of the 1959 exhibition, Emilio Re defined this subject "rare". Minimes frottements, rousseurs. PREMIERE EDITION EN LIBRAIRIE, la première partie, L'Election, ayant fait l'objet d'un tirage à part de L'Union Monarchique. Il se peut qu'Edouard Ourliac y ait collaboré. Le texte de Balzac s'achève dans cette édition à la page 65 du tome II, la fin étant de Charles Rabou. L'édition de Potter se voit préférer par le plupart des bibliophiles (Clouzot). Exemplaires finement reliés à la fin du XIXème siècle avec deux gravures de Andrieux figurant Simon Giguet et Philéas Beauvisage dans le premier tome.

        Monuments et rues de Paris.

      Paris G. Englemann for Rittner et Goupil and Susse Freres 1839 - Large folio (40 x 55 cm). Title, 20 lithographed plates with protection leaf (one protection leaf missing); slight marginal soiling, light occasional spotting. Publisher's half sheep over cloth, upper cover and flat spine lettered in gilt; rubbed, spine ends restored. Very rare pictorial record of romantic Paris, before the French capital was deeply restructered during Napoleon III's Second Empire. Apparently no copy in the CCFR and at the BnF, none in the UK and only one in the USA, in the P. Morgan library in NY. We could not trace any copy selling at auction in recent decades either. This is one of the first publications of the young William Wyld (1806-89), an English painter and lithographer who had set his studio in Paris in 1834. Wyld won a gold medal at the Paris Salon for his 2m wide canvas "Venice at Sunrise" the year he published these Monuments et rues de Paris. Friends with the French painters Ary Scheffer and Paul Delaroche, he first painted orientalist scenes, before turning to more classical architectural representations. This series is a compilation of twenty fine views of Paris, varying from monuments and avenues to views over the Seine river and even a panorama of the city from the celebrate Pere Lachaise cemetery. Some of them, such as the representations of the Palais des Tuileries, the Marché des Innocents or the Pont des Sts Pères, testify to the beauty of these monuments that no longer exist. [with:] An uncolored proof print from the plate. Very good. A fine original copper printing plate from "the finest and largest book about British Birds" (Jackson). The plate was used to print plate 49 from Selby's major work. Christine Jackson writes of the prints: "The copper plates were superbly executed and the monochrome printed plates have an austere beauty unmatched in other bird books illustrated by line. Every feather is clearly visible, with all the details of the large flight feathers and the softer plumage standing out in immaculate precision. Tone, shade, and texture were all exploited to the fullest extent and demonstrate the best of which copper etching and engraving were capable" (BIRD ETCHINGS, 1985, p.204). Prideaux John Selby was a versatile gentleman naturalist, born on July 23, 1788 in Alnwick, Northumberland, he inherited Twizell House and its estate in 1804, and throughout his life did not neglect his duties as a landowner, magistrate, High Sheriff, and then deputy lieutenant of Northumberland. He married Lewis Tabitha Mitford, the daughter of Bertram Mitford of Mitford Castle, Northumberland, in 1810, and by 1817 had a happy marriage, three daughters, and a house that had become a sort of upmarket `staging-post' for naturalists heading North and South along the nearby Great North Road. Visitors were to include John James Audubon (who gave Selby and his brother-in-law, Robert Mitford, lessons in drawing), Sir William Jardine (one of Selby's closest friends and a collaborator on various later works), John Gould, William Yarrell, H.E.Strickland, to name but a few. Natural history and ornithology had been Selby's passion from youth, and Christine Jackson notes, in her excellent introduction to the Sotheby catalogue of the Bradley Martin collection of Selby watercolors, that, besides "collecting and preserving birds, Selby had observed them in the field, making careful notes of their habitat and habits. At his leisure, he also sensitively colored drawings of them. With this accumulation of practical knowledge, specimens, and some drawings, Selby embarked in 1819 on an ambitious project to publish the most up-to- date, life-size illustrations of British birds. "Since he had an incomplete pictorial record of his birds, many remained to be drawn while publication of the parts of the work proceeded. The aim was to issue each part comprising twelve plates at regular intervals of six months. The size of the paper chosen was elephant folio (27" x 21 1/2") in order that most of the birds might be represented life-size. For each plate, Selby made watercolor paintings of the species." "Selby etched his drawings on copper plates and then either took or sent the plates to William Home Lizars in Edinburgh. Either Lizars or one of his workmen took a pull [proof impression] from Selby's plate and worked on any parts necessary to bring the plate to a very fine state of completion. Selby and Sir William Jardine both purchased their copper plates and etching ground from Pontifex of London, and their letters refer to the progress made in drawing and 'biting' or etching their plates. If they made a mistake or accidently over-etched a plate, they relied on Lizars to correct by burnishing to lighten it" (Jackson, BIRD ETCHINGS, pp.202-204). BM (NH) IV, pp.1896-96.
