South Australian Rooms, London, Nd.[1839] - Small Octavo. 3rd and best edition, considerably enlarged with additional notes, three folding maps. 1 folding chart, iv, 243pp. Henry Capper had published the South Australian Record as a newspaper since he also was the colonization commissioner's emigration clerk. South Australia had been carved out of New South Wales in 1836. This edition shows the phenomenal growth since the earlier editions on pages. 211-243. Here he shows land sales in England of Australian properties all the way through May 1839. This work became the key item showing the possibilities not only of rich capital investment but was also a path of hope for those who had felt themselves frozen out of the lands that were being bought up in England by Nouveau Riche. Bound in contemporary 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards, all edges marbled with matching endpapers, professionally rebacked to style, maroon leather label gilt, early, if not contemporary previous owner's bookplate. A very nice copy.

Scalp Dance of the Minatarres. Scalptanz der Monnitarris. Danse du scalp des Indiens Meunitarris.

Ackermann London 1839 - Uncoloured aquatint engraving. Dimensions: 410 by 535mm. (16 by 21 inches). From the illustrated 'Travels in the Interior of North America between 1832-34' by Prince Maximilian Alexander Philipp Zu Wied-Neuweid, published in two volumes by Ackermmann in London 1843. The finest work on American Indian life and the American Frontier, it is the result of an epic journey which took place at a time when the mass migrations of settlers and pioneers was about to alter irrevocably the unspoiled West. Karl Bodmer (1809-1893) was engaged by Prince Maximilian (already famed for his earlier explorations in Brazil) to provide a record of his travels among the Plains Indians of North America during 1833-34. His efforts show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely thorough, accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. The most important part of their travels started from St Louis, whence they proceeded up the treacherous Missouri along the line of forts established by the the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux Tribe, learning and recording their little known ceremonial dances, their powerful pride and dignity. Transfering from the 'Yellow Stone' to another steamer the 'Assiniboine', they continued to Fort Clark, studying there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow Tribes, then the Cree and Assiniboine tribes at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana. Established over a month there a cautious friendship developed with the fearsome Blackfoot Tribe. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and, especially, the people, who were often intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for capturing individual personalities, as well as forming, together with Prince Maximilian's written studies, the primary accounts of what became virtually lost cultures.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Leipzig, 23. III. 1839.

1839. 1 S. mit eh. Adresse verso (Faltbrief). Gr.-4to.

        Washinga Sahba's Grave

1839 - BODMER, Karl. Washinga Sahba's Grave on Blackbird's Hills. London: Ackermann (Bougeard), 1839. Single sheet, plate impression measures 12-1/2 by 9-1/2 inches; window matted, entire piece measures 23 by 20 inches. $1500.Original hand-colored aquatint Plate XII, third state, one of the 33 "vignettes" from Karl Bodmer's magnificent picture-atlas, produced for Maximilian Wied-Neuwied's Travels in the Interior of North America (1839-1843).Maximilian's monumental work was originally published in German (1839-41); a French translation followed in 1840-43 and an English translation in 1843. A picture-atlas of eighty-one aquatint plates (48 folios and 33 "vignettes") after paintings by Karl Bodmer was issued in Paris, and accompanied all three of these editions. The picture volume is now regarded as one of the most comprehensive and memorable visual surveys of North America ever produced. The images provide an authentic glimpse into 19th-century America by one of the most eminent European artists. Unlike some other painters, Bodmer tried not to romanticize his subjects, but show them as they really were. Perhaps the most important leg of Maximilian's travels started from St. Louis and proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River. "On 7 May 1833 Maximilian reported that the Yellow Stone was passing by "˜the foothills that are called Blackbird's Hills because here the famous Omaha chief Wha-sching'gha-sa-ba [Blackbird] is buried". [He] asked to be buried upright, astride his favorite mule" (Marsha V. Gallagher). The print is vignette number XII, with the three requisite imprint statements and captions in German, French and English. Third state, with the date in the imprint statement and engraved by Lucas Weber. Ruud, 269. See Howes M443a. Wagner-Camp 76. Streeter III:1809. Hand coloring very vivid, only light foxing to margins (not affecting image). A lovely print.

Documents Relating to Cuban Slavery, 1845-1882.

1839. The Administration of Cuban Slavery [Manuscript Archive]. [Slavery]. [Cuba]. [Documents Relating to Cuban Slavery]. Havana, 1845-1886. 17 documents, 13 are 8-1/2" x 12-1/2," 4 are 6" x 8-1/2," (3 with conjugate blanks), manuscript in ink on versos, all have embossed stamps or inkstamps. Light to moderate toning, negligible light foxing, fold lines, light edgewear, a few minor worm holes, one item browned with moderate edgewear and a few chips, condition of group very good overall. * Slavery existed in Cuba from the 16th century to 1886, when it was abolished by royal decree. These official documents record some of the everyday administrative aspects of Cuban slavery in its final decades. The group includes 4 sale documents (1872), 5 documents allowing slaves to travel (1845), including one signed by Duke Leopoldo O'Donnell [1809-1867], Captain General of Cuba, and 4 manumission documents (1872). The others address a freed slave that has fallen ill (1855), the state of freed slaves in Mantanzas (1886), the status of a freed slave and his daughter (1882) and the case of a freed slave who was mistakenly captured as a runaway (1868). Taken together, these items offer an interesting perspective on slavery as a conspicuous but administratively mundane aspect of Cuban society.

Mitchell's Traveller's Guide Through the United States

1839 - MITCHELL, Samuel Augustus. Mitchell's Traveller's Guide Through the United States, Containing the Principal Cities, Towns, &c. Alphabetically Arranged; Together with the Stage, Steam-Boat, Canal, and Rail-Road Routes. Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperwait, & Co., 1839. 12mo (3-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches), publisher's red patterned cloth. $1600.Early edition of this guide, with very large hand-colored map at rear of the eastern United States as far west as the Missouri Territory and eastern Texas.Samuel Augustus Mitchell was one of the most prolific publishers and editors of geographical manuals, maps, and textbooks in the United States, employing upwards to 250 artisans and writers. Around 1830 Mitchell settled in Philadelphia, where the best cartographic printing houses could be found, with the intention of improving the aesthetics of geography texts and atlases. His first effort, A New American Atlas, appeared in 1831. "Mitchell entered the field of cartography at an opportune moment, when national expansion, following the expeditions of Lewis and Clark, Pike, and others, stimulated an interest in the newer parts of the country and created a market for travel maps and guidebooks. He remains an outstanding figure in the development of American geography" (DAB). "Mitchell's ability to identify and correlate original sources, as well as material from other map makers, was evident". His maps were among the most popular and influential in distributing new knowledge about American expansion to a growing, eager audience" (Martin & Martin, 135). Traveller's guides such as this one were very popular in the 19th century""small volumes that could be slipped into a pocket, filled with detailed information on the distances of each stage of trips by different forms of transportation. With inset maps of Cincinnati, Albany, New Orleans, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and Charleston.         The Poetical Works.

London: Edward Moxon,, 1839. Edited by Mrs. Shelley. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red pebble-grained cloth, decoration and titles gilt to spines, sides panelled with arabesque decorations in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece in vol. I, with all the half-titles and advertisements. Spines sunned, small split to cloth from bottom of front joint volume 1, smaller split to centre of front joint volume 3, general minor rubbing and small marks to cloth, internally sound and fresh, volumes 2-4 still uncut, very good condition. First edition, an appealing copy in the superior red cloth, of Mary Shelley's collected edition of her husband's poetical works, the first collected edition, which established Shelley finally and irreversibly amongst the great poets of the English language. Pirate editions of Shelley's works had persuaded his father, Sir Timothy, that all hope of obscurity had passed, and Mary was allowed to prepare a proper edition provided there was only a minimum of biographical information. "Mary Shelley brought Shelley into the mainstream of the national culture. He was no longer the author of a notorious banned poem [Queen Mab] only obtainable from shops specializing in blasphemy, sedition and advice on birth control. He was the prophet of Prometheus Unbound, one of the most ambitious attempts ever made to uplift life by literature, and of other works such as the "Ode to the West Wind"... The notes that Mary added are masterpieces of editing, adding so immeasurably to the reader's understanding that nobody would now consider printing Shelley's poems without them" (St Clair)

The Loving Ballad of Lord Bateman

London: Charles Tilt , 1839. First edition. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Unusual copy of humorous poem, with all the eleven plates in two states, colored and uncolored -- only occasionally does one find the frontis plate colored, and only that one -- and a stunning Zaehnsdorf full decorative morocco binding. 12mo. 13 by 10 cm. vii, [2], 40 pp. Besides plates, in prelims is one page of musical notation. The binding has Orientalist decoration on the spine and the board corners, as befitting a work which is partly situated in Turkey, where Lord Bateman is imprisoned until liberated by the Turk's daughter. Original cloth binding bound within. The Zaehnsdorf binding appears to have been dated 1901, but we are not fully confident in the reading othe final digit. Rubbing along the joints, with a touch of starting, upper front joint. Minor chipping on first few pages, including the first color plate -- not affecting pictorial content -- and a few early leaves dog-eared. Some very faint film of soiling on some leaves.

Niagara Falle Les Chutes du Niagara, Niagara Falls

Paris: Arthur Bertrand, C1839 - "Niagara Falle Les Chutes du Niagara, Niagara Falls" Karl Bodmer (1809-1893) 16 ½ x 21 ½ inches visible, 26 x 31 inches framed. Hand colored aquatint engraving. Marking showing "Tab 39 on upper right, "Lucas Weber" on lower right, "Carl Bodmer pinx" on lower left, and "Paris, Arthur Bertrand, editeur" on the very bottom right. Provenance: Credit Suisse’s Americana Collection In 1832 Prince Maximilian of Wied, a German naturalist-explorer, and Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist, embarked on a journey of discovery to document the landscape and native tribes along the Upper Missouri River. Their voyage was undertaken at a valuable and pivotal moment in American cultural history, as it occurred just before the unspoiled West was to change irrevocably by American explorers and settlers. Bodmer's depiction of the encampments visited, the extraordinary scenery observed, and his portraits of Blackfeet, Crow, Cree, Mandan, Hidatsa, and Sioux Indians have been recognized as one of the finest records of Indian life ever produced. This splendid view of Niagara Falls was published as part of this remarkable expedition. Bodmer saw the Falls for the first time on 28 June 1834 and was clearly inspired by the scenic splendor of one of the great natural wonders of the world. The travelers had reached the Falls towards the end of their expedition. Leaving Vincennes, Indiana, on about 11 June, they had traveled east, arriving on the Ohio opposite Louisville, Kentucky. Here they boarded a ship for Cincinnati and Portsmouth following the route of the Ohio Canal along the Scioto River north to Cleveland on Lake Erie. They then took a steamboat to Buffalo, New York. Bodmer and Maximilian returned to Europe in 1834, where Bodmer spent several years supervising the engraving and printing of his images of the journey. They were published in Paris between 1839 and 1843 as Travels in the Interior of North America 1832–1834. Niagara Falls remained a favorite subject of artists throughout the first half of the nineteenth century, but the present image is arguably the finest to appear in print, as Bodmer shows great technical virtuosity and gives us a breathtaking vision of this world- famous natural wonder at its most unspoiled and pristine.         Georgian Lady for "Scenes, paysages, moeurs et costumes du Caucase".

      c. - 1840 1839 - Watercolour on paper (24 x 12 cm), offered together with its hand-coloured lithograph (34.5 x 24.2 cm) - plate 26 from "Scenes, paysages, moeurs et costumes du Caucase" (A. Hauser, Paris, c. 1840), with a blind stamp "A.B." in lower margin; two small marginal tears, light waterstain in right margin nor affecting image. An original sketch of a Georgian lady by one of the most famous Russian explorers of the Caucasus of the XIX century; here offered together with its lithograph from a very rare work on Caucasian costumes. This watercolour was painted by Gagarin as part of the series in 1839-1840 when he travelled to the Caucasus following his friend Mikhail Lermontov. It was shortly published in Paris in the work "Costumes du Caucase", which was intended to form part of a larger work depicting the scenes, landscape, customs and costumes of the Caucasus and be issued in 48 livraisons. However, Colas states that only 11 of these were issued, each containing 6 plates of costumes. Even individual plates of this work are rare. Prince Gagarin (1810-93), a painter, architect and art critic, was a Vice-president of the Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1859-72. He studied with Bryusov and was a member of the brilliant high society in St. Petersburg, where in his early years he met Pushkin and drew illustrations for some of his works. A friend of Lermontov, he went with him to the Caucasus, where he stayed on military and public service during almost 15 years until 1855. He lived a few years in Tiflis (nowadays Tbilisi) and before that had the opportunity to travel to various parts of the region, especially Dagestan. He was a cultivated, sensitive mind with artistic talents and a taste for details and observation. Whether during his missions, his vacation or his stay in town, Gagarin made numerous sketches of the local topography, architecture, decorations, life, costumes and important people. This rare sketch allows to see the artist's skill and attention to the detail, as well as Gagarine's eagerness to depict real people rather then a "general type". René Colas, a compiler of the major bibliography of costumes and fashion, highly praised Gagrine's depictions: "Plusieurs planches representent des costumes très intéressants pour la Georgie". The drawing comes from a private collection of Sarkis Boghossian and was published in his monumental work "Armenian Iconography" that gathers ____ prints and drawings on the subject. Boghossian's biography resembles a thriller novel. Born in 1921 in a small Armenian village in today's Turkey, Boghossian was taken to Marseille at the age of six by his family that fled famine and oppression. Passionate about art, poetry and Armenian culture, he chose a career of bookseller. In 1967 Boghossian opened a rare bookshop in Paris, "Le XIXe siècle", specialising in rare books and engravings related to Armenia. In autumn 1998 the French booksellers' community woke up to shocking news that Boghossian had been found dead in his Parisian flat, tortured and murdered, with a number of valuable books missing from the apartment. Police quickly traced the murderer, who, however, hardly resembled the idea one may have of an assassin. He was a French bookseller of Turkish origin and a renowned scholar with a PhD from Sorbonne specialising in Ottoman and Armenian history. He was apparently in dispute with Boghossian over a number of rare books that the latter kept as a guarantee against a cash loan. The bookseller was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison just when he was due to give a lecture at a conference in Nice titled "The Armenian merchants in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century". Sarkis Boghossian "Armenian Iconography II" 839 and 840 p.114 and 115 - Paris, 1998; For the book see Colas 1147; Lipperheide 1384.
