On a new Voltaic Combination" AND "On Voltaic Series and the Combination of Gases by Platinum" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science Volume 13, 1838, pp. 430-431 AND Volume 14, 1839, pp. 127-130

HANDSOMELY BOUND FIRST EDITIONS OF GROVE'S DESCRIPTION AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE INVENTION OF THE FIRST FUEL CELL - an improved form of voltaic cell which Faraday used in his demonstrations before the Royal Society. Simply put, fuel cell technology generates electricity within the chemical reaction created via the combination of hydrogen and oxygen. Together the two papers trace the evolution of Grove's fuel cell. Two volumes. William Grove was a Welsh barrister turned scientist. "While investigating the electrolysis of water, Grove observed that when the current was switched off, a small current flowed through the circuit in the opposite direction, as a result of a reaction between the electrolysis products, hydrogen and oxygen, catalyzed by the platinum electrodes. Grove recognized the possibility of combining several of these in series to form a gaseous voltaic battery, also [making] the crucially important observation that there must be a 'notable surface of action' between the gas, the electrolyte, and the electrode phases in a cell" (Stolten, Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, 63). "After relating [in the first paper] a number of experiments using different metals and electrolytes as well as different containers, Grove describe[s] [in the second paper] what was to become the standard form of his battery, consisting of zinc in dilute sulfuric acid and platinum in concentrated nitric acid (or a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids), giving an emf of nearly two volts" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, V, 559). ALSO INCLUDED: Michael Faraday's "Experimental Researches in Electricity, Eleventh Series," 1839, Volume 13, pp. 281-299; pp. 355-367; pp. 412-430. "Dr. Faraday's Supplementary Note to Experimental Researches in Electricity, Eleventh Series," 1839, Volume 14, pp. 34-37. First printed in the Philosophical Transactions in the same year, the eleventh series presents Faraday's researches on electro-statical induction. This series was "undertaken with a view to test an idea which he had long possessed, that the forces of attraction and repulsion exercised by free electricity are not the resultant of actions exercised at a distance, but are propagated by means of molecular action among the contiguous particles of the insulating medium surrounding the electrified bodies, which he therefore calls the dielectric. By this idea he [was] led to some very remarkable views upon induction, or in fact upon electrical action in general" (Thomson, Phil Mag, July 1854, p. 50). NOTE: In a separate listing we are also offering a separate collection of seven important first editions related to the invention and development of the fuel cell. CONDITION & DETAILS: 2 Volumes. London: Richard and John E. Taylor. (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). Volume XIII: [viii], 486, [4]. Volume 14: [viii], 552, [58 index], 4. Handsomely rebound in half-calf over marbled paper boards; 5 raised bands at the spine, gilt-ruled; red and black morroco spine label, each gilt-lettered. Tightly and very solidly bound. Slight toning to the original endpapers (included). New endpapers. Both volumes are in near fine condition.

The next exercise a.o. riding with saddle, controling the trot, moving sideward, riding with stirrups, etc. The following exercise a.o. riding with a pole, turning and jumping. The last lesson of this part is about riding with weapons and jumping over a barrier. The part on the pelotonschool is also divided in 4 articles and deals with practicing with the sword and lance, riding in a carousel, attacking with the peloton and scattered fighting. A second part was never published. Sloos explains that there a copies in circulation with only the first title page, without mentioning the parts, but also with a second title page ánd mentioning of the parts. Our copy belongs to the second cathegory. On the verso-side of the title page we find the Extract uit het Besluit des Konings, with a copy of the signature of the publishers. Very good antiquarian condition with crisp pages and plates. Ex-libris on the first endpaper. Few blank leaves with neatly handwritten contemporary annotations. Marbled boards little bit shaved. Small (well restored) tear in plate V, and sidemargins of plate V and VII little bit foxed, but overall a very good copy, complete with seven beautiful and strong lithographical plates.         WANG KEAOU LWAN PIH NEEN CHANG HAN or The Lasting Resentment of Miss Keaou Lwan Wang, A Chinese Tale: Founded on Fact

Canton: Canton Press Office, 1839. First edition. Lithograph plate. viii, 66 pp. 8vo. Modern burgundy buckram, upper board gilt, signed twice on the soiled title-page. Very good. First edition. Lithograph plate. viii, 66 pp. 8vo. Signed by Robert Thom. Signed twice by Thom, once as Consul at Ningpo. Appearing under the pseudonym "Sloth", this work precedes Thom's famous translation of Aesop's Fables into Chinese. He also produced two readers for students of Chinese. Robert Thom, 1807-1846, worked for some years with Jardine Matheson at Canton, where he developed a good knowledge of Chinese, and he dedicates this translation to William Jardine, James Matheson, and Henry Wright "as a trifling mark of gratitude and respect". In 1843 he was appointed British consul at Ningbo. He was an official linguist during the Opium war and took over from Robert Morrison as interpreter during the 1843 treaty negotiations. This is his first published translation, which was taken and adapted from the 11th volume of the 12 vol. Ming anthology, Jin gu qi guan "Wonderful stories of modern and ancient times". The plate was lithographed in Canton after a Chinese woodblock illustration. Lust, 1103PHOTO

Three Letters Reporting on Slavery on the Letterhead of the Cuban.

1839 - Anxiety About the Effects of Abolition in Jamaica [Manuscript]. [Cuba]. [Jamaica]. [Brosa, Antonio]. [Duquesnay, Carlos]. [Three Letters Reporting on Slavery on the Letterhead of the Cuban Consulate in Jamaica]. Jamaica, 1839-1842. Three letters, 8" x 12-3/4," manuscript in ink. Two letters, dated March 28, 1839 and July 20, 1839, are single leaves with blank versos. The third, dated August 3, 1842, is a bifolium with content on recto of the first leaf. This letter encloses a bifolium addendum dated August 23, 1842, 6" x 8-1/2," with content on recto of the first leaf. Moderate toning and foxing, some edgewear, faint fold lines, minor burn through, a few minor tears and worm holes, very good overall. * These letters were written at a time when the Cuban government had a constant fear of its slave and free-black population. The Haitian Revolution was a fairly recent event, the abolition movement was becoming more popular and there was constant talk about slave insurrections. What's more, Cuba was a nation in a region with a majority population of free, enslaved and recently emancipated people of African origin. Addressed to the Capitan General de la Isla de Cuba from the consulate in Jamaica, these letters record impressions about the effects of abolition, which occurred in stages between 1834 and 1838. They were dispatched by two consular officials, Antonio Brosa and Carlos Duquesnay. The first letter, from March 28, 1839, reports that his troop level has dwindled down to 1,300 men, including 100 "negroes." He is concerned about the effectiveness of this force and doubts the loyalty of his "negro" soldiers. The other letter by Brosa, dated July 20, 1839, requests a company of troops to address a "disorder" resulting from a group of "negroes" refusing to pay their rent. The Letter from Duquesnay, reports on a series of "disruptions" caused by "los emancipados." Taken together, these letters record the anxiety of Cuba's governing class over the shifting dynamics of slavery.
