Engraved frontispiece portrait by Finden. xvi, [i, contents], [i, blank], 380; [i, ads], [1, blank], [6], 347, [1]; viii, 314, [1], [1, printer's imprint]; viii, 361, [1, printer's imprint] pp. Bradbury and Evans, Printer. 4 vols. 8vo. Contemporary polished brown calf. "This edition of Mrs. Shelley's was supposed, when published, to be definitive. That she did not edit one earlier was due to the promised exacted by Sir Timothy Shelley that she would not try to bring his son's name into public notice during his own lifetime. The present edition was published with Sir Timothy's permission on condition that it should contain no memoir of the poet, a condition which was partially overcome by the addition of copious notes" (Grannis).

        THE INTERIOR OF THE HUT OF A MANDAN CHIEF. [Tab. 19]

      Paris: Coblentz and London, 1839-1842.. Handcolored aquatint engraving by Desmadryl after Bodmer. Sheet size: 17 7/16 x 23 1/4 inches. As well as being a beautifully composed view of the interior of this Mandan lodge, this is also one of the most ethnographically important of all Bodmer's images. An outstanding example of his careful rendering of every detail of the everyday life of the Mandan Tribe. The lodge was the home of Dipäuch, a respected elder of the Tribe, who gave Prince Maximilian much information about the history and beliefs of his people. The sketch was made over a period of several months at Mih-Tutta-Hand- Kusch from early December 1833 to mid-April 1834. This image has been much reproduced since, as perhaps the most accurate extant depiction, taken from life, of the domestic arrangements of the Plains Indians. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity, and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well armed with information and advice, the party finally left St. Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer, Yellow Stone, on April 10, 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari, and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From there, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue, and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances, and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. GRAFF 4648. HOWES M443a.         An Inquiry Into the Origin of the Antiquities of America

      1839. DELAFIELD, John. An Inquiry Into the Origin of the Antiquities of America. With an Appendix, Containing Notes, and "A View of the Causes of the Superiority of the Men of the Northern Over Those of the Southern Hemisphere." Illustrated with 10 lithographic plates of which 5 are hand-coloured and one folding plate nineteen feet long. 4to., 285 x 240 mm, bound in original purple cloth, rebacked with the original spine laid down. New York: J.C. Colt., 1839. |~||~||~||~| A fine clean copy of this curious nineteenth century work on South America, which is distinguished by the presence of a folding facsimile of the Codex Boturini printed on bank-note paper and extending to nineteen feet in length. The Codex tells the story of the migration legend of the Aztec peoples as they left their homeland Atzlán ("land or place of wings" or "land of herons") in the present-day southwestern United States in 1 Tecpatl (1064 C.E.) and moved south to finally settle in Tenochtitlán in the Valley of Mexico (around 1325 C.E.). The opening sequence of the codex depicts an archetypal Aztec man and the goddess Chimalma (identified by the round shield attached by a line to her head) sitting on the far left in the Aztec homeland of Aztlán. From here the Aztecs leaving by boat in the year 1 Tecpatl (1 Flint) to travel to the cave of Curl Mountain (Colhuacan), where the god Huitzilopochtli was discovered. Footprints mark the direction the people traveled, and tonguelike scrolls ascend heavenward to mark the directions given by the god.

        Logge del Vaticano

      1839. RAPHAEL. Logge del Vaticano. Complete suite of 14 hand-coloured engraved plates (numbered I-VI + 1-VIII): title-page engraved by Giovanni Balzar after a drawing by Luca Comparini, plates engraved by Carlo Lasinio after original designs by Raphael for the Vatican Loggia. Atlas folio, 643 x 490 mm, bound in contemporary Roman white vellum with the gilt and inlaid arms of Barnaba Chiaramonti as Pope Pius VII, on lower cover the initials: "D.H.M.R." surmounted by a ducal crown, a.e.g. In Roma: Presso Niccola de Antoni, [1802?] |~||~||~||~| Large Paper Copy of Lasinio's "Logge del Vaticano" in a Presentation Papal binding. The large engravings were meticulously hand-coloured at the time of publication. This glorious volume depicts the Renaissance grotesques of the columns of the Vatican Loggias, painted by Raphael in the final years of his life (between 1518-1519), and carried out under his direction and with his direct participation. (For further information, see No. 58 above). Raphael utilized Roman sources of decoration and ornamental repertory for the figures in these columns between the Vatican doorways of the Loggia. Much of the imagery can be traced to extant Roman iconographic sources such as statues, sarcophagi, coins, vases, frescos, gems, and cameos. The ornamented columns radiate with a profusion of devices from Antiquity, such as putti, drapery, landscapes, literary episodes, rich foliage, extravagant animals, and interconnecting acanthus convolutions. Cardinal Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti (1742-1823) became Pope Pius VII on 14 March 1800 and reigned as Pope until 20 August 1823. As this spectacular work was produced in Rome glorifying the Raphael frescos in the Vatican, it would have been the perfect gift for Pius VII to have special copies bound in his Papal binding and presented to honored visitors and to noble and political dignitaries throughout Europe. The originals in the long Loggia at the Vatican are now so severely damaged that they look much like ancient Roman ruins upon which they were based. Carlo Lasinio (1757-1839), Florentine engraver and publisher of books on the fine arts, was an early pioneer in the use of colour-printing in Italy. Rebacked, some minor shelfwear as expected in such a large tome, but an excellent copy in a contemporary Presentation Papal binding, with brilliant hand-colouring to the plates.

        De praecipua inter hodiernam Arabum linguam et antiquam differentia dissertatio.

      Helsingfors (Helsinki), Frenckell, 1839.. (2), 47, (1) pp. Marbled boards. 8vo.. Only edition of Wallin's dissertation, a study of the differences between classical and modern Arabic. Like his more famous contemporary J. L. Burckhardt, the Finnish orientalist Wallin was not only fluent in Arabic, but also capable of passing for a scholarly sheikh. Indeed, the two explorers are often compared: "I see many points of resemblance between them, the same iron constitution, the same versatility, the same indomitable energy, the same imperturbable temper" (H. C. Rawlinson, quoted in Henze). Financially backed by his alma mater, the University of Helsinki, Wallin departed for the Middle East in 1843 and set out on his expeditions from Cairo under the name of Abd al-Wali. "In 1845, proceeding southeast across the wastelands of the Nafud Desert, he reached Ha'il then continued by force of circumstances southward to Medina and Mecca. From there he returned to Egypt" (Howgego). After his return to Europe in 1850, Wallin was made Professor of oriental languages at Helsingfors. His notes provide a detailed overview of the political and religious movements and the role of the different tribes in Palestine and especially in Saudi Arabia. - Browned as common. An untrimmed, uncut copy as issued. - Of the utmost rarity. - K.-E. Henriksson (A Wallin Bibliography), in: Studia orientalia 17 (1952), p. 13-16, at p. 13. Henriksson/Puupponen 167. Marklin 76.

        SCIOGRAPHY; OR, EXAMPLES OF SHADOWS; WITH RULES FOR THEIR PROJECTION: INTENDED FOR THE USE OF ARCHITECTURAL DRAUGHTSMAN AND OTHER ARTISTS

      London: Whittaker and Co., Ave Maria Lane, 1839.. viii,55pp plus plates (some folding). Contemporary cloth (disbound and boards detached). Text heavily foxed, plates less so. Physically only a fair copy, but see below. Denoted the "Second Edition, With Considerable Additions and Improvements, and Six Additional Plates," but in fact an example of Whittaker and Co taking on distribution of sheets from that edition, printed by T. Davison, Whitefriars and published first in 1824, and equipping the sheets with a cancel title leaf bearing their imprint. Potentially an interesting association copy, bearing an ownership signature ("Thos. Cole 1840") in the upper margin of the title. The signature bears a strong resemblance to that of the prominent American painter, Thomas Cole (1801-1848), long associated with the Hudson River school of painting. The date of the signature and the subject matter of the book are significant and suggest a highly attractive association with one of Cole's most famous paintings, "The Architect's Dream." As recorded on the web site of The Thomas Cole National Historic Site: "Cole created The Architect's Dream for prominent New York architect Ithiel Town, who commissioned a landscape from the artist in 1839. Town paid Cole in cash and books from his extensive architectural library, which inspired the painting's fantastic composition. Cole was, in his own words, 'something of an architect,' and provided the plans for the Ohio State Capitol, and also for St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Catskill after an earlier building burned down in 1839. Cole's friend William Cullen Bryant described The Architect's Dream as 'an assemblage of structures, Egyptian, Gothic, Grecian, Moorish, such as might present itself to the imagination of one who had fallen asleep after reading a work on the different styles of architecture.' Cole finished The Architect's Dream in only five weeks, exhibiting it in the 1840 National Academy of Design annual exhibition, where it received mixed reviews. Some critics found it "too full of poetry," while others declared it 'display[ed] as much genius as many of his best.' Unfortunately, Cole's patron was on the opposing side, and ultimately refused to accept the painting because it was 'exclusively Architectural.'" It is possible, if not probable, that this book was among those which constituted the book portion of Ithiel Town's down payment to Cole.

        Voyage autour du Monde entrepris par ordre du Gouvernement sur la Corvette La Coquille

      Brussels: N.-J. Gregoir, V. Wouters et Cie., 1839. Octavo, four volumes bound in one, each with separate title page and frontispiece; occasional foxing, old bookseller's stamp to the first title page, yet quite a good copy in contemporary quarter black roan (joints repaired). Enriching the formal account of Duperry. Uncommon account of the voyage of the Coquille, a French scientific expedition under the command of Louis-Isidore Duperry. This detailed and engaging narrative was written by René Primevere Lesson, surgeon and naturalist, and includes much detail lacking in Duperry's own account.The expedition travelled extensively throughout the Pacific, including Tahiti and the Solomons, and stopped at Port Jackson before sailing to the Bay of Islands. The expedition followed in the wake of the previous French scientific voyage to the Pacific under Dumont d'Urville, who assisted Duperry in his preparations prior to departure from Toulon in August 1822.Lesson was a careful and lively observer. He received little formal education and joined the navy as medical assistant; here his natural aptitude was recognised and formal training as a surgeon ensued. Lesson was fascinated by natural history from a young age, and relished the many opportunities offered during the voyage of the Coquille.Lesson describes his personal interactions with natives peoples throughout the Pacific, including King Bungaree at Port Jackson, who was tasked with waiting upon the French officers with his Aboriginal companions. By the early 1820s the Pacific was undergoing rapid social change, and hopeful expectations often did not match the reality encountered. On anchoring in Tahiti the Frenchmen were disappointed, 'finding to their astonishment that this renowned South Seas paradise was turning into a strict, puritanical society ruled by fundamental English missionaries' (Dunmore). Nonetheless Lesson's observations are of lasting value, especially his vocabularies that include Maori and Aboriginal dialects.

        The Every-Day Book and Table Book;

      - London - For Thomas Tegg, 1839 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The books have been rebacked with cloth with the ordinal boards and gilt titles to spine. Three volumes of William Hone's year books. The books are illustrated with numerous in text illustrations throughout. Volume I - The Everyday Book - 1839Volume II - The Everyday Book - 1837Volume III - The Year Book of Daily Recreation and Information - 1839. William Hone (June 3, 1780 November 6, 1842) was an English writer, satirist and bookseller. His victorious court battle against government censorship in 1817 marked a turning point in the fight for British press freedom. Among Hone's most successful political satires were The Political house that Jack built (1819), The Queen's Matrimonial Ladder (1820), Ill favour of Queen Caroline, The Man in the Moon (1820) and The Political Showman (1821), all illustrated by Cruikshank. Many of his squibs are directed against a certain Dr Slop, a nickname given by him to Dr (afterwards Sir John) Stoddart, of The Times. In researches for his defence he had come upon some curious and at that time little trodden literary ground, and the results were shown by his publication in 1820 of his Apocryphal New Testament, and in 1823 of his Ancient Mysteries Explained. In 1826 he published the Every-day Book, in 1827-1828 the Table-Book, and in 1829 the Year-Book. All three were collections of curious information on manners, antiquities and various other subjects. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm although the cords are exposed in a few places. A couple of the inner hinges are strained but all covers are firmly attached. There is some wear to the extremities including some rubbing to the boards and edges resulting in some damage to the surface of the paper. The books have been rebacked with cloth spines and the original boards. Internally the books have some spotting in places and some handling marks. Some of the page edges, mainly tot he front of the books, are a little tattered with some small close tears. The frontispiece in volume I has been repaired to the reverse with archive paper. There is an ownership plate to the front pastedown of each volume. Overall the books are in in good condition..

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

      Frankfurt a. M., 9. III. 1839.. 3 S., 8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. Mineralogen Anton Schrötter von Kristelli (1802-1875)]. - "Er studierte zunächst mit 18 Jahren Theologie in Halle an der Saale und beschäftigte sich mit den Naturwissenschaften lediglich am Rande. Im Alter von 22 Jahren übernahm er eine kirchliche Funktionsstelle in Mühlhausen/Thüringen. Doch dann entdeckte er seine eigentliche Berufung und studierte, nachdem er seine kirchliche Laufbahn ad acta gelegt hatte, nun vermehrt Physik und Chemie. Im Jahre 1835 wurde Böttger Lehrer für Physik und Chemie im Physikalischen Verein in Frankfurt und promovierte nur zwei Jahre später in Jena bei Professor Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner. Nun begann die Zeit seines fruchtbarsten Schaffens" (Wikipedia). --- Der in Olmütz geborene Anton Schrötter, Sohn eines Apothekers, studierte ab 1822 zunächst auf Wunsch seines Vaters in Wien Medizin, wechselte dann aber unter dem Einfluss von Friedrich Mohs zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, speziell der Mineralogie. 1827 erhielt er eine Assistentenstelle für Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Wien. 1830 wurde er Professor für Physik und Chemie am Technischen Institut Joanneum in Graz. Während eines halbjährigen Urlaubs im Jahre 1838 besuchte er chemische Institute in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Frankfurt und Paris. In Gießen machte er sich bei Justus von Liebig mit der organischen Elementaranalyse vertraut. Ab 1843 arbeitete er als Professor für technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut der Universität Wien und übernahm dort 1845 die Professur für allgemeine Chemie. Schrötter war neben Baumgartner, Ettingshausen und Haidinger einer der Begründer der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und wurde 1850 ihr Generalsekretär. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina wählte Schrötter 1856 zu ihrem Mitglied. Ab 1868 leitete er das österreichische Hauptmünzamt und wurde gleichzeitig zum Ministerialrat ernannt. Er wurde 1874 in den Ruhestand versetzt und eröffnete in seiner Wohnung ein Privatlaboratorium, in dem er Studien über Edelmetalle betrieb. 1875 starb er in Wien. Schrötter hat in seinem Leben ca. 60 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst. Ab 1845 beschäftigte Schrötter sich intensiv mit Phosphor. 1848 gelang ihm der Nachweis der schon von Berzelius geäußerten Vermutung, dass roter Phosphor eine allotrope Modifikation des weißen Phosphors, nicht aber eine Phosphorverbindung ist. Schrötter wandelte weißen Phosphor durch Erhitzen in roten um, den man zeitweise Schrötterschen Phosphor nannte. Sein Verfahren zur Darstellung desselben revolutionierte die Streichholzindustrie, wo roter Phosphor schon bald als Bestandteil der Reibflächen genutzt wurde. Er war ein Organisator in Industrie und Wissenschaft sowie Berater bei den Vorbereitungen zur Novara-Expedition und zur Österreich-Ungarischen Nordpolexpedition. - Linke untere Ecke m. kl.
