The Hothouse and Greenhouse Manual, or Botanical Cultivator; Giving Full Instructions for the Management and Propagation of the Plants . Sixth Edition

Ridgway, London 1839 - (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches). [4], 762, [2]pp. Publisher's ad leaf in the rear. Contemporary green cloth, spine lettered in gilt Provenance: early owner's signature on the title Sweet's hothouse manual. Robert Sweet "was born in 1783 at Cockington, near Torquay, Devonshire. When sixteen years old he was placed under his half-brother, James Sweet, at that time gardener to Richard Bright of Ham Green, near Bristol, with whom he remained nine years. He subsequently had charge of the collection of plants at Woodlands, the residence of John Julius Angerstein . In 1810 Sweet entered as a partner in the Stockwell nursery, and when that was dissolved in 1815, became foreman to Messrs. Whitley, Brames, & Milne, nurserymen, of Fulham, till 1819, when he entered the service of Messrs. Colvill. While in their employ he was charged with having received a box of plants knowing them to have been stolen from the royal gardens, Kew, but was acquitted after trial at the Old Bailey on 24 Feb. 1824. In 1826 he left the Colvills, and till 1831 occupied himself almost wholly in the production of botanical works, while still cultivating a limited number of plants in his garden at [Pomona Place] Parson's Green, Fulham. In 1830 he moved to [Cook's Ground, King's Road] Chelsea, where he had a larger garden and cultivated for sale to his friends? He died on 20 Jan. 1835. He had been elected a fellow of the Linnean Society on 14 Feb. 1812. The botanical genus Sweetia was named in his honour by De Candolle in 1825" (DNB). The present work by Sweet includes chapters on stove plants, orchids, greenhouse plants, trees and shrubs, annuals and biennials, the forcing of bulbous plants and more. A contemporary review referred to the work as "the ultimatum on the subject for the British gardener." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Collected Works of Davy. Edited by his brother, John Davy.

London: Smith, Elder and Co. 1839. - First Collected Edition of the works of this important chemist / scientist. 9 volumes, 8vo. Finely bound in recent half speckled calf with gilt decorated raised bands, red title label and gilt titles to spines, marbled boards. With illustrations throughout. Some light foxing and minimal marking. A superb set. The final volume includes the lesser known fantasy writing 'Consolations In Travel; or, The Last Days of A Philosopher' (written in 1830), mentioned in Bleiler. Humphry Davy (1778-1829) became well known due to his experiments with the physiological action of some gases, including laughing gas (nitrous oxide) - to which he was addicted, once stating that its properties bestowed all of the benefits of alcohol but was devoid of its flaws. Davy later damaged his eyesight in a laboratory accident with nitrogen trichloride. In 1801 he was nominated professor at the Royal Institution of Great Britain and Fellow of the Royal Society, over which he would later preside. He later invented the Davy lamp which was a great and well known success (Wikipedia). Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [281] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New South Wales and Port Phillip General Post Directory, for 1839

published by James Maclehose, Hunter Street, printed by James Spilsbury, Lower George Street, Sydney 1839 - Small octavo, some browning, early paper repair where owner's name cut from initial blank; a very good copy in mid-twentieth-century black roan. A very rare survivor: 'the first Port Phillip Directory. The Port Phillip names are included in the alphabetical directory with those in New South Wales proper' (Ferguson). This directory is a fascinating snapshot of life in New South Wales and Port Phillip in 1839. It was printed by permission of then Postmaster-General James Raymond, but was evidently in no small part the work of James Maclehose, who published the work, although it was printed by James Spilsbury (the same combination that produced The Picture of Sydney). Maclehose was a Scottish immigrant who was in Sydney by June 1833 (at the latest), because at that time a partnership between him and James Hardie was dissolved. He married Mary Ann Strong in February 1834 and over the following years was active in business, evidently as a sort of importer working from his Hunter Street address - sometimes called the "Australian Bazaar" - who would turn his hand to anything: he sold "China Seeds" ('well worthy the attention of the curious, and Botanists?'), water-cooling "Cariffs", snuff boxes, eau de cologne, parasols, 'and every article in the fancy line.' The whole of his stock was sold at a no-reserve auction on 8 March 1842, by Isaac Simmons, and within a year he was insolvent (see the Herald for 14 March 1843). He seems to have left the colony for Hong Kong soon after.Ian Jack published a facsimile of this edition in 2000, in which he asserted that only five copies were known to survive.

The Eccaleobion; a treatise on artificial incubation. In two parts

London: printed and published for the author. 1839. Two parts in one vol., 8vo., vii + (1) + 56pp., with an errata slip tipped in after final leaf of text, bound recently in grey boards with printed title on upper cover. A very good copy. First edition: very scarce. A quirky and rather endearing scheme for factory-style aviculture. 'This most extraordinary and wonderful exhibition of the production of animal life by machinery, with all its accompanying interesting phoenomena, is open to the public, from ten to six o'clock. Admittance one shilling. The average number of birds capable of being brought into existence daily by this machine, exceeds 100, or about 40,000 per annum. As the fresh, impregnated egg of any bird, from a wren to an eagle, can be elicited into life at the same temperature, persons bringing the eggs of canaries, goldfinches, poultry, or any bird, may place them in the Machine for hatching, marking the same with their initials, upon payment of one shilling each egg, and will receive a Free Admission Ticket for as many days as their respective number of eggs ... Any person desirous of seeing a bird in its nascent, or partly-formed state, at any period of incubation, will have an egg broken for them, upon payment of one shilling per egg.' The author invites 'men of science' to subscribe one guinea for 21 days continuous admission, and favourable rates also for parents and children and schools. The 'Eccaleobion, or Life-giving Machine, forms, to outward appearance, an oblong, square wooden box, about nine feet in length, three feet in breadth, and three feet and a half in height, covered, excepting the doors, with cloth. It stands upon a table, and is entirely disconnected from the walls against which it is placed. Its efficient action and regulative power are inclosed within. ... The Eccaleobion is capable of containing upwards of two thousand eggs ...'. The author clearly thought this to be a major scientific advance. It was, he declared, 'an achievement hitherto unparalleled in the annals of science'.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Leipzig, 23. III. 1839. - 1 S. mit eh. Adresse verso (Faltbrief). Gr.-4to.

        THE SACRED WREATH.

Philadelphia: Thomas T. Ash & Co., [ca. 1839]. - [136]pp., including blank leaves. Printed on rectos only. Quarto. Contemporary full green morocco, elaborately embossed, with a simple gilt rule on the boards and gilt title on the front board, grey silk endsheets. Hinges expertly repaired, corners lightly worn. Very minor foxing and soiling. Near fine. A remarkable deluxe quarto gift book produced when the genre flourished in the early 19th century (the paper is watermarked "1839"). This copy appears to be unique, or represent some kind of singular production. The embossed pages are printed on various kinds of white paper, with some leaves on other colors of paper. Some of these have printed texts, while others are blank, evidently so the owner could inscribe sentiments of his or her own. The lithographed titlepage is on glazed paper, with the imprint of Thomas Ash, a prominent Philadelphia publisher who produced many volumes in the gift book genre. The volume includes four engravings after Benjamin West, drawn and engraved by H. Moses, printed on blue paper, and probably produced in England. Also includes ten embossed plates, including botanical plates of the rose, passion flower, tulip, amaranth, viola tricolor, a child in prayer, the stork, a bird's nest, and others, each accompanied by prose or poetry within an embossed frame. A fine example of the genre, remarkable both for the range and nature of the contents and for the magnificent American embossed binding. No copies located in OCLC, or in the extensive collections of the American Antiquarian Society, and evidently a unique or one-on production.

Leipzig: Christian Ernst Kollmann. Die Kapitale etwas berieben und bestossen. Generell in sehr guter Erhaltung. Gering stockfleckig.. Leipzig, Christian Ernst Kollmann, 1839. 8°. VIII, 370 Seiten. Hardcover / Originaler Ganzleinenband mit vergoldetem Rückentitel und vergoldeter Rückenverzierung. Die Kapitale etwas berieben und bestossen. Generell in sehr guter Erhaltung. Gering stockfleckig. Unnoticed by Stokes's biographers and not included in any major collection, this rare volume deals with just two organ systems: the organs of digestion (pp. 9-147) and the nervous system (pp. 148-302). The section on the nervous system includes a significant discussion of electrophysiology and the application of Galvanic current. Never published in any other form, these lectures (transcribed and translated by Friedrich Behrend) provide important perspective on Stokes's important contributions to neurology. Behrend, a graduate of the University of Konigsberg, is best known as an editor and for his iconography of the dermatologic manifestations of syphilis. He translated Stokes's classic monograph on diseases of the chest into German (1844). [Hirsch 1: 432]

The Thousand And One Nights, Commonly called, in England, The Arabian Nights' Entertainments

London: Charles Knight and co, 1839., 1839. First Lane translated Edition. 3 vols. Octavo. Bound in contemporary red morocco, lavishly decorated with foliate gilt to boards, further gilt decoration and titles in gilt to spine; all edges gauffered, floral gilt dentelles, gilt striations to board edges. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts by William Harvey. The bindings are a little rubbed to extremities and spine ends, spines uniformly a little faded, a gouge to the bottom right corner of vol 1. The text of all three volumes is clean, with no signs of tanning or spotting. One of the most famous orientalists, Lane lived in Egypt for many years, frequently disguising himself as a Turk to better assimilate himself into Egyptian society, and to improve his Arabic. His translation of the great compendium of middle eastern folklore was his most successful work, and wove together a linguistic sensibility with an epic style, well suited to the dramatic tale of Scheherazade and Shahryar.

Their history is well documented, though from different perspectives. Sleeman is best known for his work suppressing the Thuggee secret society. During his campaign, more than 1400 Thugs were hanged or transported for life. Sleeman had a Government Report made in 1839, and wrote three books about the Thugs: Ramaseeana, or a Vocabulary of the peculiar language used by Thugs; Report on the Depredations Committed by the Thug Gangs of Upper and Central India; and The Thugs or Phansigars of India.

Leverett" is lettered in gilt on the front cover, and the same name is given in precise gothic calligraphy on the front free endpaper. Bound as above, corners a little bumped with a bit of long ago refurbishing thereto, dulling outermost elements of gilt border (only) on front cover, just at those corners. Evidence to endpapers of the volume's once having been sewn into a chemise or wrapper; old notes just discernable (not really readable) in a minute hand on front free endpaper (i.e., "behind" Sarah's name). Faint waterstaining in lower inside area for the first few pages (only). The whole very attractive and well preserved.

De la bienfaisance publique. Nouvelle edition. Tome premier (-tome seconde)

Societ? Belge de Librairie, Bruxelles 1839 - 2 voll. in 8, pp. XIII + (3) + 504 con tavv. sinott. n.t. e 1 tav. f.t. piu' volte rip.; 550 con tavv. sinott. n.t. Intonsi. Alcune cc. presentano leggere gore marginali. Three Expeditions into the Interior of Eastern Australia

London: T. & W. Boone, 1839. Two volumes, octavo, with a total of 51 lithographic plates including six colour chromolithographic and three folding plates, the large folding map neatly repaired on the far left from an earlier tear; very good and attractive in the original publisher's blocked green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, just starting to fray at the edges, heads of spines slightly chipped. Second revised edition of Mitchell's classic account of his three expeditions along the river systems of south-eastern Australia, strikingly illustrated with lithographic plates taken from original field sketches by the author.Between 1831-1836 Mitchell undertook three expeditions to determine the course of several large rivers in southern mainland Australia, including the Gwydir and Darling, accompanied by fellow surveyors, skilled convicts and Aboriginal guides. The expeditions were motivated by the government's need to map, and therefore own, land before it was occupied by squatters who were taking prime grazing land at an alarming rate. Furthermore, much past survey work had been inaccurate and disputes between landowners prompted calls for a general survey of New South Wales.Three Expeditions into the Interior is a remarkable book, combining detailed scientific observation with rich descriptions of landscapes and Aboriginal tribes. Its ethnographic value is considerable, providing detailed descriptions of first contacts and of Aboriginal social organization, hunting and languages. Some tribes were very hostile and Mitchell writes that he feared for his life on several occasions; nonetheless he remained a sympathetic and careful observer of Aboriginal life while praising the knowledge and endurance of those who helped the expedition. This second edition does have many additions and revisions, and even the large folding map has been silently improved. This set in the second issue binding discussed by Wantrup, with spines lettered "Mitchell's Australian Expeditions". Ferguson, 2811; Australian Rare Books, 125.

        The Birds of America,

New York & Philadelphia: J. J. Audubon and [vols. I-V] J. B. Chevalier,, [1839-]1840?-1844. . from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories. 7 volumes, octavo. (259 × 162 mm). Publishers' deluxe binding of black full morocco, richly gilt spines, elaborately gilt-stamped sides featuring at centre the Washington sea-eagle in gilt, richly gilt turn-ins, gilt edges, yellow endpapers. 500 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Audubon by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembley and others, printed by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia (plates 1-135, 151-500) or George Endicott of New York (plates 136-150), numerous wood-engraved anatomical figures in text. Engraved bookplates of Samuel Strong Spaulding (1849?-1939) of Buffalo, NY, president of M&T Trust Company and later president of the Buffalo Street Railway. Volume I skilfully repaired, joints lightly rubbed, a few hinges partially split but sound, letterpress foxed. First octavo edition of Audubon's "Great National Work", the first complete edition and the first American edition, the original double-elephant folio was published in Edinburgh and London between 1827 and 1838. A very handsome set, the plates clean and fresh, in the original publishers' de luxe binding of the "most beautiful, popular, and important natural history books published in America in the nineteenth century... representing the best of pre-Civil War American lithography and giving Audubon the opportunity finally to display his scholarship and genius to a large American audience for the first time" (Ron Tyler). The plates, here accompanied by the text for the first time, were reduced and variously modified from the Havell engravings in the double-elephant folio. Seven new species are figured and seventeen others, previously described in the Ornithological Biography but not illustrated, are pictured for the first time. Audubon may have been prompted to publish the reduced version of his double-elephant folio by the appearance in 1839 of John Kirk Townsend's rival Ornithology of the United States, or, as he writes in the introduction to the present work, he may have succumbed to public demand and his wish that a work similar to his large work should be published but "at such a price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his Library". The first edition of the octavo work now represents the only realistic opportunity that exists for collectors to own an entire collection of Audubon images in a form that was overseen and approved by the great artist himself.

Berlin, 29. VII. 1839.. 1 S. 4to..

While living in Albany, New York with her sister Lydia, her home served as a meeting place for social and political reformers presenting petitions and speeches at the state legislature. Notable figures such as Susan B. Anthony and cousins James and Lucretia Mott frequently visited the Mott sisters in New York. Both Abigail and Lydia were active abolitionists, and their home also served as a station on the Underground Railroad. As a writer, Abigail Mott explored a number of topics, experimenting with political, historical, and children's literature. This is her most famous work was - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES AND INTERESTING ANECDOTES OF PERSONS OF COLOR. First published in 1826, it was one of the first compilations of African-American biography including sketches of famous African-Americans such as Phyllis Wheatley. Mott compiled the book with Mary Sutton Wood (1805-1894) using the name A. Mott (in an 1877 reprint she was listed as Alexander Mott). Lindley Murray sponsored the publication of the book and was also responsible for the 1877 reprint titled NARRATIVES OF COLORED AMERICANS. Other entries in this effort to show the "dreadful consequences of that arbitrary power invested in the slaveholder over his fellow-being, to show how it hardens the heart and petrifies the feelings." There is a heart-breaking account of "Poor Sarah: - Or, Religion Exemplified in the Life and Death of a Pious Indian Woman" who died convinced of God's love, despite a life that would have tested the faith of the most ardent Christian. There is an account of the life of "Alice, the Negro" a female slave who died in 1802 at age 116, again a devoted Christian. The account of "Margaret Ann Crutchfield -A Cherokee Convert" and "Belinda Lucas" (a woman of color taken in slavery around 1725) are both about the positive effects of Christian conversion on the lives of the most impoverished members in early American society. The trials these women endured are enumerated, along with their Christian charity to those they believed less fortunate than they. The assemblage of these lives of the famous - Toussaint L'Ouverture and Phillis Wheatley - juxtaposed with Poor Sarah and other "ordinary" people is unusual. The second part of this book is a series of anecdotes or essays on the evils of slavery by various authors. The third part is a selection of poetry, most abolitionist. Included, however, is Lydia Sigourney's "Burial of the Indian Girl". Sigourney's abolitionist "Difference of Color" and "Missions to Africa" are also included with "Washington City Prison" by fellow Quaker Elizabeth M. Chandler who had died in 1834.
