        PEHRISKA-RUHPA. MOENNITARRI WARRIOR IN THE COSTUME OF THE DOG DANSE [sic]. [Tab. 23]

      Paris: Coblenz and London, [1839-1842].. Handcolored aquatint engraving by René Rollet after Bodmer, blindstamp in lower margin. Sheet size: 20 5/8 x 15 13/16 inches. Very good. Perhaps the greatest image to emerge from the picturing of the American West, and certainly Bodmer's most famous, this highly-charged portrait of Péhriska- Rúhpa ("Two Ravens") presents the warrior and chief of the Hidatsa in way that encapsulates the vanished era of the Plains Indian. The portrait has a great sense of immediacy, intensity, of noise and movement; a moment in time is captured, when we look away the Dog Dance continues. Péhriska- Rúhpa dances in his regalia as a principal leader of the Dog Society of his village. The white tips on the glossy black feathers of the headdress indicate the attachment of a tiny down feather to the point of each plume, the central vertical plume is painted red. Dyed horse hair floats from colored sticks attached to the shafts of the turkey feathers. All this will shortly be in motion again as the dancer resumes his movement to the cadence of drum and the rattle (made of small hooves or dewclaws attached to a beaded stick) held in his right hand. The Dog Society was one of seven such societies amongst the men of the Mandan and Hidatsa Tribes. They were one of the main tenets by which Hidatsa society was lived: as an individual progressed through life it was necessary for him to purchase his entry into successive societies, starting with "the foolish dogs" at about ten to fifteen years of age and graduating to the society of the black- tailed deer for men over fifty. The Dog Society was the fourth of these progressions. Each society had a set number of members, so that an individual from a lower society could only buy entry to the higher society if there was a member of that society who was himself ready to move to the society above his. They all had individual rules, rituals, dances and regalia. All this information was carefully recorded by Prince Maximilian during the travellers' winter stop-over at Fort Clark in 1833-34, this portrait, Bodmer's masterpiece, was painted in March 1834 towards the end of this stay. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St. Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10, 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what was to become virtually lost cultures. GRAFF 4648. HOWES M443a.       Philadelphia: Thomas T. Ash & Co., [ca. 1839].. [136]pp., including blank leaves. Printed on rectos only. Quarto. Contemporary full green morocco, elaborately embossed, with a simple gilt rule on the boards and gilt title on the front board, grey silk endsheets. Hinges expertly repaired, corners lightly worn. Very minor foxing and soiling. Near fine. A remarkable deluxe quarto gift book produced when the genre flourished in the early 19th century (the paper is watermarked "1839"). This copy appears to be unique, or represent some kind of singular production. The embossed pages are printed on various kinds of white paper, with some leaves on other colors of paper. Some of these have printed texts, while others are blank, evidently so the owner could inscribe sentiments of his or her own. The lithographed titlepage is on glazed paper, with the imprint of Thomas Ash, a prominent Philadelphia publisher who produced many volumes in the gift book genre. The volume includes four engravings after Benjamin West, drawn and engraved by H. Moses, printed on blue paper, and probably produced in England. Also includes ten embossed plates, including botanical plates of the rose, passion flower, tulip, amaranth, viola tricolor, a child in prayer, the stork, a bird's nest, and others, each accompanied by prose or poetry within an embossed frame. A fine example of the genre, remarkable both for the range and nature of the contents and for the magnificent American embossed binding. No copies located in OCLC, or in the extensive collections of the American Antiquarian Society, and evidently a unique or one-on production.

To an unnamed aristocrat or a church dignitary, bringing to his attention an elaborate hunting rifle: "Monseigneur, Je crois devoir recommander à votre attention toute spéciale un objet d'art et de luxe, dû au travail intelligent d'un de mes compatriotes du Berry. Il s'agit d'un fusil de chasse d'une beauté et d'une perfection tout exceptionnelle. Sorti presque tout entier de la même main patiente et minutieuse c'est, on peut le dire à coup sûr, un instrument de précision. - Si vous voulez bien le regarder vous-même, je ne doute pas de l'intérêt avec lequel vous apprécierez cet excellent travail." After naming the artful details of the rifle, Sand concludes by summarizing the quality of the piece: "Beaucoup d'autres qualités enfin qu'une spécialité compilente saura remarquer et qui me font désirer vivement que vous ne refusiez pas quelques instants d'attention à une sorte de chef d'œuvre dont l'artisan hors ligne mérite tout votre intérêt et votre équitable protection. [ ]".

Nachdem wir Sonntag halb 10 Uhr Morgens mit der Eisenbahn hier eingetroffen, bewegte ich mich mit Theodor sofort zu Breitkopf und Härtel, der am andern Morgen zu uns kam, um das Quartett zu hören, wir stellten es ihm frei, seinen Verwandten den Dr Fink mitzubringen; wovon er auch Gebrauch machte, außer den Genannten waren Kistner und der Tenorist Schmidt zufällig bei uns als die Production losging. - Wir spielten es recht con amore und ich glaube besser als jemals. Alle Anwesende, den Dr. Fink mit inbegriffen waren enthusiasmirt [.]". - G. H. T. Müller war Bratschist des berühmten (ersten) Müller-Quartetts. Der Brief ist mit Gebr. Müller unterzeichnet und trägt den Zusatz "Secretair in d. A / Gustav Müller", was - wenn "A" für "Ausführung" steht - darauf schließen läßt, daß er der Verfasser ist. Der dreizeilige eh. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. Pleasing late 19th century crimson half morocco, raised bands, gilt-ruled compartments with central ornament of a gilt rosette within a star, marbled pastedowns, top edges gilt. With more than 300 wood engravings from the designs of William Harvey. Front pastedowns with the bookplate of William John Watson. Volume I with translator's "Advertisement" giving the spelling and pronunciation of various Arabic words. Corners to two volumes ever so slightly rubbed, front free endpapers with faint offset from bookplate, occasional rust spots, a few isolated margin smudges, but a really excellent copy with few signs of wear inside or out. Originally issued from 1838-41 in 32 parts and with copious notes, this is the original appearance in book form of what is generally acknowledged to be the first accurate translation into English of the classic story of Scheherazade. Probably derived from Egyptian and Persian origins, the "Arabian Nights' Entertainment," or "The Thousand and One Nights," has as its framework the story of a king who kills successive wives on the morning after the consummation of their marriage. The fatal pattern is broken by the wily Scheherazade, who enthralls her husband (and the reader) with stories so pleasing that her life is spared. Lane (1801-76) went to Egypt as a young man to improve his health, arriving at a time when serious European study of the region had just begun. Immediately caught up in the culture, he produced an elaborately detailed description of Egypt and its people and later a monumental Arabic dictionary 25 years in the making. In between he did the present translation of the "Arabian Nights." His translation omitted some of the stories that in England would have been thought too vulgar, but he was well qualified to enrich the book with notes that give an understanding of Muslim life. This edition also represents one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by Harvey (1796-1866), a famous pupil of Bewick and (at least in Houfe's estimation) the most popular British illustrator of the 1840s.

        [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM AUDUBON TO HIS ESTEEMED ENGRAVER, ROBERT HAVELL, REGARDING TRAVEL TOGETHER AND NATURAL HISTORY SPECIMENS]

      Liverpool. July 21, 1839.. [1]p., docketed on verso. Quarto. Small tears at folds, minor fraying and chipping to edges, affecting a few words of text including the last three letters of Audubon's signature. Good. In a half morocco and cloth folding case, gilt, with gilt leather label on front cover. A significant letter from distinguished American naturalist, John James Audubon to his favorite engraver, Robert Havell. Having spent over two years from 1837 to 1839 in England, finalizing the publication of the great BIRDS OF AMERICA and its companion text, the ORNITHOLOGICAL BIOGRAPHY, Audubon and his family prepare for the final journey home. Audubon writes to Havell, the principal engraver for the famous elephant folio BIRDS, as the two men had become fast friends during the book's creation. Havell decided to accompany Audubon to America, and days before their scheduled departure, Audubon writes to Havell: "...We will sail on Monday next...from this port for New York on board the packet ship the George Washington.... You and Mrs. Havell & daughter will sail from London on the 1st of August; but it is difficult to say which of us will reach America first. Should you do so, please to inform our sons and daughters of the name of the vessel...." Audubon then asks Havell to have casks of natural history samples sent to Sheffield: "I wish you to have the goodness to forward to Mr. John Heppenstall of Sheffield, all the barrels or kegs which you had placed in a warehouse.... Please to have shipped to Hull by steamer to be forwarded to Sheffield by canal boats, and have the said casks addressed John Heppenstall Esq., Sheffield, Natural History objects [the latter three words underlined by Audubon]. I wish you and yours could have been in the same ship with us...." Upon their arrival in America, Havell and his family first stayed with the Audubons in Brooklyn, then moved to Ossining, New York, and subsequently to Tarrytown, where they spent the remaining years of his life painting Hudson River views and landscapes, as well as engraving and publishing prints of the Hudson and of various American cities. Correspondence between these two important icons of 19th- century American natural history publication is exceedingly rare in the market.

        A Diary In America, with Remarks On Its Institutions (6 volumes)

      London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green & Longmans, 1839. First Editionof the 1st and 2nd series.. All six volumes of this six volume matched set are frst editions of 1st and 2nd series and all are in very good+ or better condition in 3/4 leather (calf) and marbled paper covered boards with five raised bands on the spines with red and black leather title labels and gilt tooling in the compartments. The end sheets for each volume match the marbled paper on the covers of the books. All edges of the text blocks are gilt. Each volume is a small octavo measuring 7 3/4" by 5" with an early prior owner's book plate attached to the front paste down. The front hinge and joint to volume I of the first series (Part I) is weak with the front hinge reinforced with archival tape and the rear joint is showing wear, but remains tight. The spine is very slightly faded. Vol. II only shows wear to the leather at the head and heel of the spine and lower edges of the boards with very light wear to the joints. Vol. III shows only light rubbing to the front joint. Vol. I of the Second Series (Part II) shows only slight wear and rubbing to the front hinge and to the lower edges of the boards. Vol. II and III both show shallow wear to the leather at the head and heel of the spines and to the lower edges of the boards and light wear to the front joints. Pasted to the second free end page is a clipped signature of Frederick Marryat. With an errata page for Vol. I appearing at the rear of Vol. III. Vol. II of the Second Series has the fold-out map of "Aboriginal America" upon which are noted the various Native American tribes within their respective geographical areas. This map is followed by a second fold-out map of central Florida showing the seat of hostilities with Seminole Indians and the United States. By the time of his visit and tour of America and Canada in 1837 through 1838, Captain Marryat had already attained the status of an accomplished novelist in Great Britain. He published his notes, diary and comments on his travels shortly after returning to England. His characterizations of Americans their institutions and his remarks were hardly complimentary. Both Series I and Series II are considered "scarce" by Howes. (Howes, M-300 & M-301; Clark, Travels in the Old South, III:204)

        The Romance of Private Life: The Renunciation and The Hermitage [Three Volume Set]

Sarah Harriet Burney (29 August 1772 - 8 February 1844) was an English novelist, the daughter of musicologist and composer Charles Burney, and half-sister of the novelist and diarist Frances Burney (Madame d'Arblay). This was her last work, published five years before her death in 1844. This appears to be the only copy of this scare book on the market. About fifteen years ago the book was rediscovered by American feminists and new printings appeared.Charles Lamb was a personal friend. The Romance of Private Life were sparsely reviewed, although there was an American edition in 1840. Contains two tales - "The Renunciation", which presents a colourful picture of life abroad, when an English girl travels to Italy in search of kin and supports herself as an artist, offering an early feminist heroine; and, "The Hermitage", a psychological thriller involving a ruined country maiden and an unsolved murder. Interest in Sarah Burney's work began to revive as part of a general, in some cases feminist interest in all women writers of this period. This was supported by some reprint editions a few years ago, and more importantly, by a meticulous critical edition of The Romance of Private Life, which appeared in 2008. Early 20th-century half morocco, spines gilt in compartments separated by raised bands, top edges gilt, brown cloth sides ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Chromolithograph half-title to vol. I, 2 figurative initials, 114 engravings and woodcuts to the text. Corners, joints and raised bands very slightly rubbed. An excellent copy. Second London edition of Johnes's translation of Froissart, first published in four volumes at the translator's own press in Hafod (1803-10), and the first edition thus, containing the three preliminary essays. Froissart's chronicle of the Hundred Years' War, a text considered one of the most important sources for the history of medieval Europe and chivalric culture. Originally written in French in the late 14th century, it circulated widely in manuscript, with lavishly illuminated copies especially popular among nobles and clergyman, and was first printed in Paris by Anthoine Vérard sometime around 1495, though an English edition did not appear until 1608, and even then was really a translation of a Latin abridgement. Johnes "remains the only man to have undertaken the formidable task of translating Froissart's Chronicles in their entirety, and the appearance of subsequent editions until 1906 testifies to their worth" (ODNB).

Paris: Pitois-Levrault, 1839. |~||~||~||~||~||~| A superb copy of the First Edition of the most influential treatise on colour from the nineteenth century, with many of the colour plates signed by Chevreul. A professional chemist, Chevreul became Director of Dyeing at the Gobelins royal tapestry manufactory in 1824, in which position he perfected a number of new dyes and was led to a close study of the properties of colour. It was this foundation of empirical observation that permitted him to discern one very simple principle, so widely known today that it is difficult to imagine a time when it was not the fundamental guideline for artists and every kind of graphic designer in their use of colour. Formulated in the present work (p. 14), Chevreul's "law of simultaneous contrast of colours" states that colours seen side by side will always appear to the eye "as dissimilar as possible, both in their optical composition and in the height of their tone." On this basis Chevreul proceeded to analyze the consequences and applications of colour contrast, i.e., the modifications of hue and tone occurring when juxtaposed colours are viewed at the same time. He established "a precise nomenclature for colour relationships: tons for tonal value on a scale from black to white; gamme for the tonal scale itself; nuances for the modifications of one hue by the admixture of another; couleurs franches for pure, saturated pigments; couleurs rabattues (or rompues) for colours broken with black (or grey). These qualities were demonstrated in a colour wheel to which was attached a quadrant…" (Kemp, The Science of Art, pp. 306-7). Chevreul intended his treatise for the use of painters, textile designers, gardeners and other graphic artists rather than for scientists, and the influence of his discoveries on the development of European painting was enormous. The Impressionists followed his precepts for the decomposition of colour tones and the juxtaposition of colours, building up their paintings using separate touches of pure colours on the canvas, and allowing the observer's eye to combine them; and the Neo-Impressionist school, led by Seurat and Signac, went further, seeking to provide a scientific basis for Impressionism by deliberately limiting "their palettes to Chevreul's circle of fundamental colors and intermediate tones and [applying] colors scientifically to their canvases as opposed spots" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The influence of Chevreul's theories continued into the twentieth century: several modern colour-field painters, especially Ellsworth Kelly, are known to have experimented with Chevreul's colour theory. In the present copy the plates are in "issue B," with the coloured disks on white or grey backgrounds. Text volume with some foxing as usual, but much better than usually found. So geht die Benutzung des Stethoskop als eines der ersten Diagnosegeräte auf Josef von Škoda (1839) zurück. Christine Jackson writes of the prints: "The copper plates were superbly executed and the monochrome printed plates have an austere beauty unmatched in other bird books illustrated by line. Every feather is clearly visible, with all the details of the large flight feathers and the softer plumage standing out in immaculate precision. Tone, shade, and texture were all exploited to the fullest extent and demonstrate the best of which copper etching and engraving were capable" ( Bird Etchings 1985, p.204).Prideaux John Selby was a versatile gentleman naturalist, born on 23 July 1788 in Alnwick, Northumberland, he inherited Twizell House and its estate in 1804, and throughout his life did not neglect his duties as a landowner, magistrate, High Sheriff, and then Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland. He married Lewis Tabitha Mitford, the daughter of Bertram Mitford of Mitford Castle, Northumberland, in 1810, and by 1817 had a happy marriage, three daughters, and a house that had become a sort of upmarket `staging-post' for naturalists heading North and South along the nearby Great North Road. Visitors were to include John James Audubon (who gave Selby and his brother-in-law Robert Mitford lessons in drawing), Sir William Jardine (one of Selby's closest friends and a collaborator on various later works), John Gould, William Yarrell, H.E.Strickland, to name but a few.Natural History and Ornithology had been Selby's passion from youth, and Christine Jackson notes, in her excellent introduction to the Sotheby catalogue of the Bradley Martin collection of Selby watercolours, that, besides "collecting and preserving birds, Selby had observed them in the field, making careful notes of their habitat and habits. At his leisure, he also sensitively colored drawings of them. With this accumulation of practical knowledge, specimens, and some drawings, Selby embarked in 1819 on an ambitious project to publish the most up-to-date, life-size illustrations of British birds.Since he had an incomplete pictorial record of his birds, many remained to be drawn while publication of the parts of the work proceeded. The aim was to issue each part comprising twelve plates at regular intervals of six months. The size of the paper chosen was elephant folio (27" x 21½") in order that most of the birds might be represented life-size. For each plate, Selby made watercolor paintings of the species.""Selby etched his drawings on copper plates and then either took or sent the plates to William Home Lizars in Edinburgh. Either Lizars or one of his workmen took a pull [proof impression] from Selby's plate and worked on any parts necessary to bring the plate to a very fine state of completion. Selby and Sir William Jardine both purchased their copper plates and etching ground from Pontifex of London, and their letters refer to the progress made in drawing and 'biting' or etching their plates. This, the rare first typographic edition, was the first time the poems appeared following the very small number of copies that Blake himself engraved, hand-printed and hand-colored. "In 1838 Mr. Charles Augustus Tulk lent Mr. Wilkinson a copy of Wm. Blake's 'Songs of Innocence and Experience,' a copy of Blake's own making… The delicacy and spiritual simplicity of the Songs made a deep impression on Garth Wilkinson… His brother William, holding no lower opinion came forward with the necessary funds; subscribers were sought for high and low; a preface was written and the edition, a thin cloth-bound octavo was published jointly by Pickering & Newbery on July 9, 1839. Seit 1873 hatte Eissenhardt ein Atelier im Städel und war bis 1889 dort auch als Lehrer tätig. Er war ausschließlich Reproduktionsstecher, begann mit dem reinen Linienstich, später verwandte er mit Vorliebe eine Mischung von Radierung und Linienstich.

Prideaux John Selby was a versatile gentleman naturalist, born on 23 July 1788 in Alnwick, Northumberland, he inherited Twizell House and its estate in 1804, and throughout his life did not neglect his duties as a landowner, magistrate, High Sheriff, and then Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland. He married Lewis Tabitha Mitford, the daughter of Bertram Mitford of Mitford Castle, Northumberland, in 1810, and by 1817 had a happy marriage, three daughters, and a house that had become a sort of upmarket `staging-post' for naturalists heading North and South along the nearby Great North Road. Visitors were to include John James Audubon (who gave Selby and his brother-in-law Robert Mitford lessons in drawing), Sir William Jardine (one of Selby's closest friends and a collaborator on various later works), John Gould, William Yarrell, H.E.Strickland, to name but a few. Natural History and Ornithology had been Selby's passion from youth, and Christine Jackson notes, in her excellent introduction to the Sotheby catalogue of the Bradley Martin collection of Selby watercolours, that, besides "collecting and preserving birds, Selby had observed them in the field, making careful notes of their habitat and habits. At his leisure, he also sensitively colored drawings of them. With this accumulation of practical knowledge, specimens, and some drawings, Selby embarked in 1819 on an ambitious project to publish the most up-to-date, life-size illustrations of British birds. Since he had an incomplete pictorial record of his birds, many remained to be drawn while publication of the parts of the work proceeded. The aim was to issue each part comprising twelve plates at regular intervals of six months. The size of the paper chosen was elephant folio (27" x 21½") in order that most of the birds might be represented life-size. For each plate, Selby made watercolor paintings of the species." "Selby etched his drawings on copper plates and then either took or sent the plates to William Home Lizars in Edinburgh. Either Lizars or one of his workmen took a pull [proof impression] from Selby's plate and worked on any parts necessary to bring the plate to a very fine state of completion. Selby and Sir William Jardine both purchased their copper plates and etching ground from Pontifex of London, and their letters refer to the progress made in drawing and 'biting' or etching their plates. To an unnamed aristocrat or a church dignitary, bringing to his attention an elaborate hunting rifle: "Monseigneur, Je crois devoir recommander a votre attention toute speciale un objet d'art et de luxe, du au travail intelligent d'un de mes compatriotes du Berry. Il s'agit d'un fusil de chasse d'une beaute et d'une perfection tout exceptionnelle. Sorti presque tout entier de la meme main patiente et minutieuse c'est, on peut le dire a coup sur, un instrument de precision. - Si vous voulez bien le regarder vous-meme, je ne doute pas de l'interet avec lequel vous apprecierez cet excellent travail." After naming the artful details of the rifle, Sand concludes by summarizing the quality of the piece: "Beaucoup d'autres qualites enfin qu'une specialite compilente saura remarquer et qui me font desirer vivement que vous ne refusiez pas quelques instants d'attention a une sorte de chef d'oeuvre dont l'artisan hors ligne merite tout votre interet et votre equitable protection. [ ]".

        New South Wales and Port Phillip General Post Directory, for 1839

      Sydney: published by James Maclehose, Hunter Street, printed by James Spilsbury, Lower George Street, 1839. Small octavo, some browning, early paper repair where owner's name cut from initial blank; a very good copy in mid-twentieth-century black roan. A very rare survivor: 'the first Port Phillip Directory. The Port Phillip names are included in the alphabetical directory with those in New South Wales proper' (Ferguson).This directory is a fascinating snapshot of life in New South Wales and Port Phillip in 1839. It was printed by permission of then Postmaster-General James Raymond, but was evidently in no small part the work of James Maclehose, who published the work, although it was printed by James Spilsbury (the same combination that produced The Picture of Sydney). Maclehose was a Scottish immigrant who was in Sydney by June 1833 (at the latest), because at that time a partnership between him and James Hardie was dissolved. He married Mary Ann Strong in February 1834 and over the following years was active in business, evidently as a sort of importer working from his Hunter Street address - sometimes called the "Australian Bazaar" - who would turn his hand to anything: he sold "China Seeds" ('well worthy the attention of the curious, and Botanists...'), water-cooling "Cariffs", snuff boxes, eau de cologne, parasols, 'and every article in the fancy line.' The whole of his stock was sold at a no-reserve auction on 8 March 1842, by Isaac Simmons, and within a year he was insolvent (see the Herald for 14 March 1843). He seems to have left the colony for Hong Kong soon after.Ian Jack published a facsimile of this edition in 2000, in which he asserted that only five copies were known to survive.

      London: Smith, Elder and Co. 1839. - First Collected Edition of the works of this important chemist / scientist. 9 volumes, 8vo. Finely bound in recent half speckled calf with gilt decorated raised bands, red title label and gilt titles to spines, marbled boards. With illustrations throughout. Some light foxing and minimal marking. A superb set. The final volume includes the lesser known fantasy writing 'Consolations In Travel; or, The Last Days of A Philosopher' (written in 1830), mentioned in Bleiler. Humphry Davy (1778-1829) became well known due to his experiments with the physiological action of some gases, including laughing gas (nitrous oxide) - to which he was addicted, once stating that its properties bestowed all of the benefits of alcohol but was devoid of its flaws. Davy later damaged his eyesight in a laboratory accident with nitrogen trichloride. In 1801 he was nominated professor at the Royal Institution of Great Britain and Fellow of the Royal Society, over which he would later preside.
