Leipzig: Christian Ernst Kollmann. Die Kapitale etwas berieben und bestossen. Generell in sehr guter Erhaltung. Gering stockfleckig.. Leipzig, Christian Ernst Kollmann, 1839. 8°. VIII, 370 Seiten. Hardcover / Originaler Ganzleinenband mit vergoldetem Rückentitel und vergoldeter Rückenverzierung. Die Kapitale etwas berieben und bestossen. Generell in sehr guter Erhaltung. Gering stockfleckig. Unnoticed by Stokes's biographers and not included in any major collection, this rare volume deals with just two organ systems: the organs of digestion (pp. 9-147) and the nervous system (pp. 148-302). The section on the nervous system includes a significant discussion of electrophysiology and the application of Galvanic current. Never published in any other form, these lectures (transcribed and translated by Friedrich Behrend) provide important perspective on Stokes's important contributions to neurology. Behrend, a graduate of the University of Konigsberg, is best known as an editor and for his iconography of the dermatologic manifestations of syphilis. He translated Stokes's classic monograph on diseases of the chest into German (1844). [Hirsch 1: 432]

The Thousand And One Nights, Commonly called, in England, The Arabian Nights' Entertainments

London: Charles Knight and co, 1839., 1839. First Lane translated Edition. 3 vols. Octavo. Bound in contemporary red morocco, lavishly decorated with foliate gilt to boards, further gilt decoration and titles in gilt to spine; all edges gauffered, floral gilt dentelles, gilt striations to board edges. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts by William Harvey. The bindings are a little rubbed to extremities and spine ends, spines uniformly a little faded, a gouge to the bottom right corner of vol 1. The text of all three volumes is clean, with no signs of tanning or spotting. One of the most famous orientalists, Lane lived in Egypt for many years, frequently disguising himself as a Turk to better assimilate himself into Egyptian society, and to improve his Arabic. His translation of the great compendium of middle eastern folklore was his most successful work, and wove together a linguistic sensibility with an epic style, well suited to the dramatic tale of Scheherazade and Shahryar.

Volume I & Volume II

Philadelphia, PA: Carey & Hart, 1839. 1st US Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Two slim volumes bound in navy cloth with paper labels to spines. Heavy rubbing and wear at extremities. Major-General Sir William Henry Sleeman (1788 - 1856) was a British soldier and administrator in British India, best known for his work suppressing Thuggee activity. Thuggee refers to the acts of Thugs, an organized gang of professional assassins who travelled in groups across India for six hundred years. Their history is well documented, though from different perspectives. Sleeman is best known for his work suppressing the Thuggee secret society. During his campaign, more than 1400 Thugs were hanged or transported for life. Sleeman had a Government Report made in 1839, and wrote three books about the Thugs: Ramaseeana, or a Vocabulary of the peculiar language used by Thugs; Report on the Depredations Committed by the Thug Gangs of Upper and Central India; and The Thugs or Phansigars of India.

[Guatemala]: Imprenta de la N. A. de Estudios Folio (30.7 cm;12.125"). [1] f.. 1839 Beginning in 1838 The Federal Republic of Central America was torn apart by civil wars pitting Liberals against Conservatives and the desires of the various states against the central government, with constitutional issues at the heart of the controversy. The Liberals installed Gen. Carlos Salazar in January, 1839, as provisional president of Guatemala replacing Conservative Mariano Rivera Paz. This was during a brief period of peace between the two factions. Here in a decree dated 20 March 1839 Salazar offers to act as mediator for any effort at a lasting peace.         La Sainte Bible revue par David Martin

New York: Stéréotypé par Henry W. Rees, pour la Société Biblique Americaine, D. Fanshaw, Imprimeur 8vo. 819 [1 (blank)] pp., 261, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1839?-40 Only the second edition in the U.S. of the Martin edition of the French Bible. (Prior to 1835, the American Bible Society favored using the text of the 1805 French Bible.) Binding: This copy is exquisitely bound in full black leather in good imitation of morocco, elaborately stamped in gold on the covers forming a five-element frame or border, with gilt tooling on the board edges and with gilt inner dentelles. The spine has slightly raised bands and elaborate gold stamping in its compartments. => This is the second copy of this Bible that we have had and we are convinced that this is a publisher's deluxe leather binding. A choice of colors was apparently available, for the other copy we had was of an olive-green color. Provenance: The name "Sarah B. Leverett" is lettered in gilt on the front cover, and the same name is given in precise gothic calligraphy on the front free endpaper. Bound as above, corners a little bumped with a bit of long ago refurbishing thereto, dulling outermost elements of gilt border (only) on front cover, just at those corners. Evidence to endpapers of the volume's once having been sewn into a chemise or wrapper; old notes just discernable (not really readable) in a minute hand on front free endpaper (i.e., "behind" Sarah's name). Faint waterstaining in lower inside area for the first few pages (only). The whole very attractive and well preserved.

Societ? Belge de Librairie, Bruxelles 1839 - 2 voll. in 8, pp. XIII + (3) + 504 con tavv. sinott. n.t. e 1 tav. f.t. piu' volte rip.; 550 con tavv. sinott. n.t. Intonsi. Alcune cc. presentano leggere gore marginali. Three Expeditions into the Interior of Eastern Australia

London: T. & W. Boone, 1839. Two volumes, octavo, with a total of 51 lithographic plates including six colour chromolithographic and three folding plates, the large folding map neatly repaired on the far left from an earlier tear; very good and attractive in the original publisher's blocked green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, just starting to fray at the edges, heads of spines slightly chipped. Second revised edition of Mitchell's classic account of his three expeditions along the river systems of south-eastern Australia, strikingly illustrated with lithographic plates taken from original field sketches by the author.Between 1831-1836 Mitchell undertook three expeditions to determine the course of several large rivers in southern mainland Australia, including the Gwydir and Darling, accompanied by fellow surveyors, skilled convicts and Aboriginal guides. The expeditions were motivated by the government's need to map, and therefore own, land before it was occupied by squatters who were taking prime grazing land at an alarming rate. Furthermore, much past survey work had been inaccurate and disputes between landowners prompted calls for a general survey of New South Wales.Three Expeditions into the Interior is a remarkable book, combining detailed scientific observation with rich descriptions of landscapes and Aboriginal tribes. Its ethnographic value is considerable, providing detailed descriptions of first contacts and of Aboriginal social organization, hunting and languages. Some tribes were very hostile and Mitchell writes that he feared for his life on several occasions; nonetheless he remained a sympathetic and careful observer of Aboriginal life while praising the knowledge and endurance of those who helped the expedition. This second edition does have many additions and revisions, and even the large folding map has been silently improved. This set in the second issue binding discussed by Wantrup, with spines lettered "Mitchell's Australian Expeditions". Ferguson, 2811; Australian Rare Books, 125.

        The Birds of America,

New York & Philadelphia: J. J. Audubon and [vols. I-V] J. B. Chevalier,, [1839-]1840?-1844. . from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories. 7 volumes, octavo. (259 × 162 mm). Publishers' deluxe binding of black full morocco, richly gilt spines, elaborately gilt-stamped sides featuring at centre the Washington sea-eagle in gilt, richly gilt turn-ins, gilt edges, yellow endpapers. 500 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Audubon by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembley and others, printed by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia (plates 1-135, 151-500) or George Endicott of New York (plates 136-150), numerous wood-engraved anatomical figures in text. Engraved bookplates of Samuel Strong Spaulding (1849?-1939) of Buffalo, NY, president of M&T Trust Company and later president of the Buffalo Street Railway. Volume I skilfully repaired, joints lightly rubbed, a few hinges partially split but sound, letterpress foxed. First octavo edition of Audubon's "Great National Work", the first complete edition and the first American edition, the original double-elephant folio was published in Edinburgh and London between 1827 and 1838. A very handsome set, the plates clean and fresh, in the original publishers' de luxe binding of the "most beautiful, popular, and important natural history books published in America in the nineteenth century... representing the best of pre-Civil War American lithography and giving Audubon the opportunity finally to display his scholarship and genius to a large American audience for the first time" (Ron Tyler). The plates, here accompanied by the text for the first time, were reduced and variously modified from the Havell engravings in the double-elephant folio. Seven new species are figured and seventeen others, previously described in the Ornithological Biography but not illustrated, are pictured for the first time. Audubon may have been prompted to publish the reduced version of his double-elephant folio by the appearance in 1839 of John Kirk Townsend's rival Ornithology of the United States, or, as he writes in the introduction to the present work, he may have succumbed to public demand and his wish that a work similar to his large work should be published but "at such a price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his Library". The first edition of the octavo work now represents the only realistic opportunity that exists for collectors to own an entire collection of Audubon images in a form that was overseen and approved by the great artist himself.

Berlin, 29. VII. 1839.. 1 S. 4to..

Biographical Sketches and Interesting Anecdotes of Persons of Color. To which is added a Selection of Pieces in Poetry

New York: M. Day, 1839. Third Edition (first published in 1826, revised in 1837 and revised again here). 12mo; 408pp; original calf, front cover detached black leather label, joints cracked by cords holding, covers rubbed and stained, back blank torn, slightly foxed, good+. Abigail Field Mott (1766-1851), writer and abolitionist, cousin to James Mott (Lucretia's husband) like many Quaker women of the time period was involved in a number of political and social causes. While living in Albany, New York with her sister Lydia, her home served as a meeting place for social and political reformers presenting petitions and speeches at the state legislature. Notable figures such as Susan B. Anthony and cousins James and Lucretia Mott frequently visited the Mott sisters in New York. Both Abigail and Lydia were active abolitionists, and their home also served as a station on the Underground Railroad. As a writer, Abigail Mott explored a number of topics, experimenting with political, historical, and children's literature. This is her most famous work was - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES AND INTERESTING ANECDOTES OF PERSONS OF COLOR. First published in 1826, it was one of the first compilations of African-American biography including sketches of famous African-Americans such as Phyllis Wheatley. Mott compiled the book with Mary Sutton Wood (1805-1894) using the name A. Mott (in an 1877 reprint she was listed as Alexander Mott). Lindley Murray sponsored the publication of the book and was also responsible for the 1877 reprint titled NARRATIVES OF COLORED AMERICANS. Other entries in this effort to show the "dreadful consequences of that arbitrary power invested in the slaveholder over his fellow-being, to show how it hardens the heart and petrifies the feelings." There is a heart-breaking account of "Poor Sarah: - Or, Religion Exemplified in the Life and Death of a Pious Indian Woman" who died convinced of God's love, despite a life that would have tested the faith of the most ardent Christian. There is an account of the life of "Alice, the Negro" a female slave who died in 1802 at age 116, again a devoted Christian. The account of "Margaret Ann Crutchfield -A Cherokee Convert" and "Belinda Lucas" (a woman of color taken in slavery around 1725) are both about the positive effects of Christian conversion on the lives of the most impoverished members in early American society. The trials these women endured are enumerated, along with their Christian charity to those they believed less fortunate than they. The assemblage of these lives of the famous - Toussaint L'Ouverture and Phillis Wheatley - juxtaposed with Poor Sarah and other "ordinary" people is unusual. The second part of this book is a series of anecdotes or essays on the evils of slavery by various authors. The third part is a selection of poetry, most abolitionist. Included, however, is Lydia Sigourney's "Burial of the Indian Girl". Sigourney's abolitionist "Difference of Color" and "Missions to Africa" are also included with "Washington City Prison" by fellow Quaker Elizabeth M. Chandler who had died in 1834.         La Sainte Bible revue par David Martin

New York: Stéréotypé par Henry W. Rees, pour la Société Biblique Americaine, D. Fanshaw, Imprimeur 8vo. 819 [1 (blank)] pp., 261, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1839–40 Only the second edition in the U.S. of the Martin edition of the French Bible.

Minimal rubbing to extremities, otherwise near fine. Two issues of the exceptionally rare hand-colored deluxe edition of a noted English Literary Gift annual.Finden's Tableaux was issued between 1837 and 1844. A publisher's ad reveals that this work was issued in three forms: uncolored on regular paper, uncolored India proofs, or "a few copies with the plates beautifully coloured after the original Drawings". The hand colored deluxe issues, as here, are considerably more scarce than the others, making these among the most desirable of the illustrated English literary annuals of the nineteenth century. "I do not, I hope, sin against editorial modesty, when in returning my most earnest thanks to the Friends whose Contributions have given to this Volume its literary value, I congratulate myself upon being enabled to offer to the Public Poems of an importance and interest which will far outlast the date of an Annual." (Preface).Plates in the 1839 volume: The Romaunt of the Page; The Buccaneer; The Treason of Gomez Arias; The Sister of Charity; The Minstrel of Provence; The Baron's Daughter; The Greek Wife; The Cartel; Zulette; A Story of the Woods; The Coronation; The Novice.Plates in the 1840 volume: The Dream; The King's Page; Legend of the Brown Rosarie; The Proud Ladye; The Maid's Trial; The Roundhead's Daughter; The King's Forester; The Beacon; Venice; The Bride; The Fetches; The Woodcutter.William Finden (1787-1852) was an English line engraver. He served his apprenticeship to James Mitan, but appears to have owed far more to the influence of James Heath, whose works he privately and earnestly studied. His first employment on his own account was engraving illustrations for books, and among the most noteworthy of these early plates were Smirke's illustrations to Don Quixote. His neat style and smooth finish made his pictures very attractive and popular, and although he executed several large plates, his chief work throughout his life was book illustration. His younger brother, Edward Finden (1791-1857), worked in conjunction with him, and so much demand arose for their productions that ultimately a company of assistants was engaged, and plates were produced in increasing numbers, their quality as works of art declining as their quantity rose. The largest plate executed by William Finden was the portrait of King George IV seated on a sofa, after the painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence. For this work he received two thousand guineas, a sum larger than had ever before been paid for an engraved portrait. Finden's next and happiest works on a large scale were the Highlanders Return and the Village Festival, after Wilkie. Later in life he undertook, in co-operation with his brother, aided by their numerous staff, the publication as well as the production of various galleries of engravings. The first of these, a series of landscape and portrait illustrations to the life and works of Byron, appeared in 1833 and following years, and was very successful. But by his Gallery of British Art (in fifteen parts, 1838-1840), the most costly and best of these ventures, he lost the fruits of all his former success. Finden's last undertaking was an engraving on a large scale of William Hilton's Crucifixion. The plate was bought by the Art Union of London for £1,470."Coxhead Thomas Stothard (1906) p. 96; Not in Hammelmann Book Illustrators in Eighteenth Century England; Jaggard p. 287.

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby

London: Chapman & Hall, 1839 Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). First edition, first issue, with the first state frontispiece with the publisher's imprint. Finely bound in three-quarter tan polished calf and blue marbled boards, with five raised bands to the spine, ruled in blind and gilt, contrasting red morocco label lettered in gilt to the spine, all edges speckled. Very good, with some light wear to the extremities, bright spine, some rubbing to the boards, lacking the half-title, frontispiece with some spotting, plates with spotting but less than the usual toning to the edges, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, former owner's inscription to the front free endpaper, otherwise bright and fresh pages, sturdy binding. Overall, a tight and pleasing copy. Smith I, 5. Like its predecessor Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby is a novel set in Victorian England that features a male youth as the protagonist and puts a human face on the social depravation of the British underclass. In the novel, Nicholas Nickleby, after losing his father, is sent to a boy's school where he witnesses and attempts to prevent the mistreatment of the orphan students by their tyrannical adult wardens. Before its book form publication on October 23, 1839, Nicholas Nickleby was issued in twenty parts, published serially in nineteen monthly installments from April 1839 - October 1839. Each front wrapper contains an illustration by H. K. Browne, who also created the illustrated plates that are included in this volume. This copy has the first state of the first five of these illustrations, including the frontispiece. Additionally, it contains one of the two definitive issue points for the first issue text called for by Hatton and Cleaver. Together, these points indicate that this is one of the earliest printings of Nicholas Nickleby. Each serial installment included the half-title "Containing a Faithful Account of the Fortunes, Misfortunes, Uprisings, Downfallings, and the Complete Career of the Nickleby Family" and claimed to be edited by "Boz." While both author and illustrator signed the serialized Nicholas Nickleby with pseudonyms, Dickens added his real name to the book form, while Browne continued to be credited as "Phiz.". Illus. by Browne, Hablot Knight. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Journal of the Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania and Mechanic's Register ? New Series, Vol. XXIV [July, 1839-December, 1839]

Published by the Franklin Institute, at their Hall, Philadelphia 1839 - First edition. With folding tables. [ii], 442 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The Daguerreotype in America. The July-December 1839 volume of this important scientific journal; it includes reports on the daguerreotype, heliogravure and photogenic drawing, with mentions of Daguerre, Herschel, Niepce and Fox Talbot. Descriptions of the daguerreotype process published here mark some of the earliest mentions in print in America and were likely the source for the earliest surviving daguerreotype in America.Louis Daguerre's public revelation of his process for fixing images on silver-plated copper came in August of 1839, and the publication of his method (Histoire et description des procedes du Daguerreotype et du diorama) was published in Paris around August 20th. The first English edition, translated by J.S. Memes, appeared in London in September, and the first American edition, which incorporated bits of Memes' translation with other material, was published in New York in 1840 (cf. Newhall nos. 1, 9 & 17). The September issue of the Journal of the Franklin Institute reprints a report from the August revelation of the process in Paris, first published in the United States Gazette. The October issue prints for the first time a lengthy and detailed description of the process, specially translated for the Journal by J.F. Frazer. The first daguerreotype in Philadelphia was taken October 16, by Joseph Saxton, an employee of the United States Mint. He is thought to have used either the description of the process as published in the October number of the Journal (pp. 303-311 of the present volume) or the United States Gazette (reprinted here on pp. 209-10). Saxton's image of the arsenal and cupola of the Philadelphia Central High School is the earliest surviving American daguerreotype (Gernsheim & Gernsheim, p. 132).An important early source for the daguerreotype in America. The art form was immediately embraced by the country and flourished - by 1853 there were more daguerreotype galleries in New York than in all of England (Newhall, p. 11). Provenance: George B. Sloat (name stamped in gilt at foot of spine). Cf. Gernsheim & Gernsheim, L.J.M Daguerre; Newhall, The Daguerreotype in America Bound in contemporary three quarters morocco, by Hamilton, Philadelphia, with their blindstamp on ffep. With minor rubbing, foxing to text With folding tables. [ii], 442 pp. 1 vols. 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
