        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

Frankfurt a. M., 9. III. 1839. 3 S., 8°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. "One of the sanest works on education ever written" (Th. Davidson, A History of Education, NY 1971, S. 243). Mme. Necker de Saussure war die Tochter des prominenten Schweizer Naturwissenschaftler Horace-Bénédict de Saussure und Gattin des Botanikers Jacques Necker (Neffe des gleichnamigen Finanzministers Ludwigs XVI.).         On a new Voltaic Combination" AND "On Voltaic Series and the Combination of Gases by Platinum" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science Volume 13, 1838, pp. 430-431 AND Volume 14, 1839, pp. 127-130

      - FIRST EDITIONS OF GROVE'S DESCRIPTION AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE INVENTION OF THE FIRST FUEL CELL - an improved form of voltaic cell which Faraday used in his demonstrations before the Royal Society. Simply put, fuel cell technology generates electricity within the chemical reaction created via the combination of hydrogen and oxygen. Together the two papers trace the evolution of Grove's fuel cell. Two volumes.William Grove was a Welsh barrister turned scientist. "While investigating the electrolysis of water, Grove observed that when the current was switched off, a small current flowed through the circuit in the opposite direction, as a result of a reaction between the electrolysis products, hydrogen and oxygen, catalyzed by the platinum electrodes. Grove recognized the possibility of combining several of these in series to form a gaseous voltaic battery, also [making] the crucially important observation that there must be a 'notable surface of action' between the gas, the electrolyte, and the electrode phases in a cell" (Stolten, Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, 63). "After relating [in the first paper] a number of experiments using different metals and electrolytes as well as different containers, Grove describe[s] [in the second paper] what was to become the standard form of his battery, consisting of zinc in dilute sulfuric acid and platinum in concentrated nitric acid (or a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids), giving an emf of nearly two volts" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, V, 559). ALSO INCLUDED: Michael Faraday's "Experimental Researches in Electricity, Eleventh Series," 1839, Volume 13, pp. 281-299; pp. 355-367; pp. 412-430. "Dr. Faraday's Supplementary Note to Experimental Researches in Electricity, Eleventh Series," 1839, Volume 14, pp. 34-37. First printed in the Philosophical Transactions in the same year, the eleventh series presents Faraday's researches on electro-statical induction. This series was "undertaken with a view to test an idea which he had long possessed, that the forces of attraction and repulsion exercised by free electricity are not the resultant of actions exercised at a distance, but are propagated by means of molecular action among the contiguous particles of the insulating medium surrounding the electrified bodies, which he therefore calls the dielectric. By this idea he [was] led to some very remarkable views upon induction, or in fact upon electrical action in general" (Thomson, Phil Mag, July 1854, p. 50). NOTE: In a separate listing we are also offering a separate collection of seven important first editions related to the invention and development of the fuel cell. CONDITION & DETAILS: 2 Volumes. London: Richard and John E. Taylor. (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [viii], 486, [258 page index], 4. Ex-libris bearing only a small paper label at the spine and a discreet stamp on the title page. Bound in three quarter polished black calf over marbled paper boards. GIlt-ruled and lettered at the spine. Minor rubbing and scuffing; tightly and solidly bound. Slight age toning and foxing. Both volumes are in very good condition.

An Inquiry into the Origin of the Antiquities of America With: Original Prospectus - an 8 page pamphlet

New York: Published for Subscribers by Colt, Burgess & Co. 1839 - New York: Published for Subscribers by Colt, Burgess & Co., 1839. First Edition. Large 4to - 29.9cm. pp. 142 including Appendix, 10 exceptional lithographic plates, five of which are hand-colored, depicting artifacts, skulls, traditional artwork, plans, and more. The fold-out "plate" precedes the title page and is in fact a replica of the codex Boturini, apparently produced to scale and measuring 7.5" x 19' (feet). The paper used for this exceedingly large fold-out is more like a thin vellum, quite thin, but strong Ñ this copy is completely intact. There is intermittent foxing but not affecting plates which are fresh. Binding is the original boards, blind-stamped and with bright gilt center design; recent leather spine with title labels, raised bands; all page edges gilt, newer end-leaves. Overall this is a very good and complete copy of a rare publication. Howes D229. Sabin 19333. Field 509. John Delafield was a prominent New York banker. His book, which was quite well-printed for an American book of this period, is a study of the origins of the Native Americans, including those of South America, an interesting piqued, as he says, from living among the tumuli of those people, i.e. he mound builders. His conclusions are that they migrated across the Bering Straits, for which he tries to supply linguistic, somatic, mythic and other proofs. His work was a notable achievement for that time in history. There is also an appendix by James Lakey, entitled "A Brief Inquiry in the Causes of the Superiority of Man in the Northern Hemisphere, over those of the Southern Hemisphere". Provenance: This copy belonged to John Bussey, a prominent Boston Merchant, farmer and horticulturist, who left his land to Havard University for agricultural and horticultural advancement. The current Arnold Arboretum is on Bussey's donated land. His small circular stamp on the title page bear his name. With: Also laid into this copy is the original prospectus for the book Ñ a pamphlet of 8pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Monuments et rues de Paris.

Paris G. Englemann for Rittner et Goupil and Susse Freres 1839 - Large folio (40 x 55 cm). Title, 20 lithographed plates with protection leaf (one protection leaf missing); slight marginal soiling, light occasional spotting. Publisher's half sheep over cloth, upper cover and flat spine lettered in gilt; rubbed, spine ends restored. Very rare pictorial record of romantic Paris, before the French capital was deeply restructered during Napoleon III's Second Empire. Apparently no copy in the CCFR and at the BnF, none in the UK and only one in the USA, in the P. Morgan library in NY. We could not trace any copy selling at auction in recent decades either. This is one of the first publications of the young William Wyld (1806-89), an English painter and lithographer who had set his studio in Paris in 1834. Wyld won a gold medal at the Paris Salon for his 2m wide canvas "Venice at Sunrise" the year he published these Monuments et rues de Paris. Friends with the French painters Ary Scheffer and Paul Delaroche, he first painted orientalist scenes, before turning to more classical architectural representations. This series is a compilation of twenty fine views of Paris, varying from monuments and avenues to views over the Seine river and even a panorama of the city from the celebrate Pere Lachaise cemetery. Some of them, such as the representations of the Palais des Tuileries, the Marché des Innocents or the Pont des Sts Pères, testify to the beauty of these monuments that no longer exist.
