Hardt, (Johann Baptist von).
Bamberg, Literarisch-artistisches Institut, 1838. - 8vo (21 : 12.5 cm). Lithographed portrait, printed on India paper and mounted on thick paper, VI, 118 p. Duke Wilhelm (1752-1837) was born as Count Palatine of Birkenfels-Gelnhausen. As a Wittelsbach collateral he was honoured in 1799 with the title ?Duke in Bavaria? He was trained at the Mannheim court of Karl Theodor, Elector Palatine of the Rhine, and at Heidelberg university. When Karl Theodor had become Elector of Bavaria in 1777, he appointed Wilhelm an advisor to the court of Munich. He acted as a skilled military officer and diplomat securing the integrity of the Wittelsbach territories in the difficult times to come. In 1803 he received the Rhenish Duchy of Berg with its capital Düsseldorf as an appanage. When Napoleon seized the Duchy in 1806, Wilhelm retired to Bamberg residence. In 1813 he purchased and rebuilt the secularized abbey of Banz with its magnificent baroque premises as a summer retreat. Duke Wilhelm patronized arts and sciences. Known to be a bibliophile he received countless dedication copies of books published in his lifetime, often bound in gilt or silvered blue silk, the Bavarian colours. There is no catalogue of his books merged after his death with the library of his grandson Max Duke in Bavaria at Tegernsee castle. The present biography was written by the director of Wilhelm?s chancellery, court counsellor von Hardt, also a well-known mineral collector. - Some brownish stains to covers, frontispiece a little foxed. A crisp copy on fine wove paper. Contemporary ochre-coloured calf, richly gilt … [Click Below for Full Description]
