Campbell, Alexander, editor.
Printed and Published by A. Campbell,, Bethany, Va. [now West Virginia]: 1838 - 8vo (gathered in sixes), original quarter calf, marbled boards, gilt lettering, 574, [2] pages. The annual file for 1838 of this monthly from the founder of the Disciples of Christ; the volume includes of course theological argument, but there is also much in the way of news from other churches, largely from Kentucky, Ohio, and further outposts in Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. This volume includes Campbell’s address to the students of New Athens College (likely Franklin College in New Athens, Ohio) and to the Florence Academy in Washington county, Penna. Embossed stamp of the Christian Foundation on the title page (with an autograph "Withdrawn" note over that) and the small ink stamp of Cotner College, the now-defunct Disciples of Christ school in Lincoln, Nebraska Cotner College (the last class graduated in 1933) to the inner margin of the second leaf. Two small somewhat later ink corrections in the text, three instances of discreet marginal notation. Some foxing; spine somewhat rubbed, corners and edges a little rubbed and bumped; a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dickens, Charles
Carey, Lea and Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1838. xii, 388p., engraved plates as called for (inserted yellow stock) , two engraved title pages (versions by each artist) and printed title leaf with presswork credit verso; first American illustrated edition cased into modern half calf boards over homemade marbling. Textblock was printed on pulpy, soft paperstock and is splotched with foxing throughout, two original blanks (fore and aft) remain, these adhered to marbled endsheets. Complete text; but misbound into this sequence: roman pagination is followed by pp.13-84, 95-96, 87-94, 85-86, thereafter correct. There are also two torn leaves, see 95/96 (partly repaired) and gutter of 386-87 (where there is a gaping but not-at-risk crack). The modern, perhaps mid-20thC casing is polished roan, has five raised bands and no titling or any label, and is unruled; a not-unhandsome amateur production, with one small corner-tip mouse-gnawed. Quite sound and more or less presentable. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Brumby, R.T.
[Tuscaloosa: Joel White, printer (?), 1838]. First separate edition. 12mo. 16 pp. The author, Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology at the University of Alabama, was asked to analyze the waters of Blount Springs by the proprietor, Thomas Williams, who requested that he publish his findings in an edition of 2,000 copies, "in such a manner as would be most generally read." Brumby was also asked to produce a study of the general geology of the state for inclusion in Professor Frederick Barnard's almanac. According to the author's note to the reader on the introductory page, in an attempt to satisfy the requests of both men, the text for this pamphlet was published by Barnard in his almanac (Bernard's Alabama State Almanac for 1839 was printed by Joel White in 1838): "After the printer had struck off the required number of copies for the almanac, two thousand copies were published separately, for the use of Col. Williams." Ellison 353 (without actually citing a copy, giving author and title only, the information taken from an 1839 Cahawba newspaper). Not in Owen, Sabin, Howes, or Streeter. OCLC locates two copies of this separately printed pamphlet (Alabama, Emory). Fine untrimmed copy in an attractive 20th-century binding. Recent antique-style half-calf and marbled boards, red leather spine label, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, London, England. (8980).

Ottimo esemplare.

DICKENS, Charles.
1838?/1841 The first letter 11 lines on 1p. 8vo, paper watermarked 'B&T Sweet Apple 1830', with integral blanks; the second 14 lines on 1p. 8vo with integral blanks. Both letters relate to articles Archer has written, almost certainly for Bentley's Miscellany. Dickens responds to one of them in detail (see Pilgrim Letters, vol. I, p.485). The first letter here from Twickenham Park, which is only briefly recorded in Pilgrim Letters, vol. VII addenda, p.792, 'begs to inform ... that he has not yet refused any paper bearing the title he names' and directs further correspondence to 48 Doughty Street. The second letter is rather warmer in tone: 'Mr Charles Dickens presents his compliments to Mr Archer, and perfectly well remembers (now that it is recalled to his recollection) the paper... and which he no longer has an opportunity of publishing. It may be pleasant to Mr Archer to know that it returns quite fresh to Mr Dickens' memory, although at the time when the note was written he had some three or four score Mss every month...'The first ALS is with a later envelope (unsigned) with mourning border, addressed by Dickens to Archer at Churchill, Bristol; it is clearly postmarked '25 OC 1848', although Pilgrim Letters date it incorrectly as 1838 (p.793, vol. VII, addenda). The second is with its correct envelope (unsigned), addressed by Dickens to Archer at Mr. Spence's, Finchley Common, redirected in another hand to Bedford Street, Bedford Row, London, postmarked 'SP 3 1841'. DICKENS, CHARLES.
London: Richard Bentley, 1838. First Edition; three volumes; first issue; with 'Boz' on the title pages and with the 'fireside' plate in volume three. Publisher's cloth; variant state binding with 'London/ Bentley' at the foot of the spines (according to Smith, not a point of any significance); some cloth fading, minor wear and spotting; slight ink marks on one title page; a very clean set with only occasional spots and foxing; in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with chemises. The "fireside" plate was one of several illustrations by Cruikshank that were rushed to complete the book. Reviewing the plates before publication, Dickens objected to this illustration and ordered a new one prepared. Early copies have this original plate, as well as "Boz" on the title page, which also displeased the author. The book was published on November 9, 1838, and changes were made in copies prepared between the 9th and the 16th. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
