MONTAGU, Mary Wortley, Lady.
London, Joseph Rickerby, 1838. Small 8vo. Contemporary speckled calf, spine with black morocco lettering-pice; pp. [3]-9, [3], lxiii, v, [7]-283, [4, advertisements; hinges restored at an early date, evenly lightly toned, a very good copy of a scarce book. First edition. 'Lady Mary left London in August 1716 to accompany her husband [Edward Wortley Montagu] on his embassy to Constantinople, seat of the Ottoman empire. Owing to the transformation of European politics by the battle of Peterwardein shortly after they set out, and a requirement that Wortley Montagu pick up further instructions at both Hanover and Vienna, they travelled overland, criss-crossing Europe on the way. They reached Turkey in spring 1717, after a fearsome journey through wolf-infested forests and across the battlefield of Peterwardein (where bodies of men, horses, and camels still lay deep-frozen in the snow). Lady Mary sent home long letters describing her travels, and she kept copies for future reworking as a travel book. She laid a foundation of expertise in Turkish culture in three weeks billeted in Belgrade with an efendi, or Islamic scholar, with whom she had wide-ranging conversations on oriental languages, literature, religions, and social customs. She was delighted with the civility of women at a public bath building in Sofia, socially poised and graciously welcoming although stark naked. Lady Mary's time in Turkey (divided between Adrianople, Constantinople, and Belgrade Village, a country retreat near the latter) turned out to be brief. Her husband, hoping to win great national and personal … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELLIS [née Stickney], Sarah
London and Paris Fisher Son & Co. no date, 1838. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 202 x 120 mms., pp. [9], 10 - 342, 2 [adverts], original ribbed cloth, with image in gilt of Queen Victoria on front cover; some slight wear to binding, but a very good copy. Sarah Stickney (1799 - 1872), the daughter of the Quaker farmer and his first wife, Esther Richardson, married the widower William Ellis (1794–1872), Congregational minister, missionary, and author on 23 May 1837. After her marriage, she always used her married name for her publications. Of an edition published in 1839 in New York, the journal Biblical Repository and Classical Review, stated, "This book is doubtless in the very first class of its kind. The reputation of the author is established for beauty of style, good sense, and purity and elevation of sentiment." In her preface, Ellis claims that previous books about women's behaviour, duties, moral orientation, etc. have been addressed to ladies, "while that estimate class of females who might be more specifically denominated women, and who yet enjoy the privilege of liberal education, with exemption from the pecuniary necessities of labour, are almost wholly overlooked." Her book is intended for them. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Beecher, Edward
Alton, IL: George Holton, 1838. First Edition. Hardcover. Good+. 159 pp, in original publisher's cloth. General wear to boards including some rippling of the cloth, old dampstain to bottom margin (not affecting text). Binding sound, hinges secure. Elijah P. Lovejoy (1802-1837) was a Presbyterian minister and abolitionist newspaper publisher who ran a small press in Alton, Illinois. This narrative by fellow abolitionist Edward Beecher (son of Lyman Beecher and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe) is considered the best of several accounts of the attack on Lovejoy's press and his death at the hands of a mob on November 7, 1837 -- an incident that made Lovejoy a nationally known martyr to the abolitionist cause. Müller, Johannes
Berlin, gedruckt und verlegt Georg Reimer, 1838, Folio, 1 Bl., 60 pp., 1 Bl., 4 (1 color.) v. Schumann, Troschel et Müller ad. nat. del., Grüzmacher gestochene Tafeln, Halbleinenband mit Rückenvergoldung u. Rückenschild feines Exemplar. Erste und einzige Ausgabe! Grundstein mikroskopischer Untersuchungen krankhafter Gewebe! THE FOUNDER OF MICROSCOPIC PATHOLOGY CELLULAR CHARACTER OF TUMORS- First Edition, in original wrappers as published! The founder of pathological Histology as an indepedent field, and the first microscopical study of diseased itssue, by which Johannes Müller (1801-1858) showed that the cell theory was a requirement for the study of cancer. COMBE, Edmund, and Maurice TAMISIER.
Paris, Louis Desessart, 1838. 4 vols. 8vo. Quarter dark green calf over marbled boards, marbled edges and endpapers, spine with raised bands, tooled in gilt and decorated in blind; bound without the map as sometimes the case; a little faded in places, but overall a sturdy, clean and uniform set. First edition. Combe and Tamisier travelled as part of the Saint-Simon movement during the years 1835-1837 in an endeavour to contribute to the exploration of Abyssinia and knowledge of Ethiopian culture. The movement was based on socialist co-operative principles and sought to raise the status of women and workers. They sponsored many expeditions into Egypt, Yemen and other parts of Africa (possibly due to the fact that their leader was arrested for propagating dissent in 1832, and they were looking for a safe haven). In particular, Combe's work is best reputed for his attention to the details of the lives of women and disadvantaged peoples in the countries he visited. Combe went on to gain a reputation as an explorer of Ethiopia, and worked as an informal diplomat. The exploration reports of Combe and Tamisier were read widely amongst those with an interest, and served as a good source of information for the wider attempts to bring regions such as Abyssinia into the trade network.

Frontis., engr. t.-p., iv, [16], dcccxvi, clxxxvii, [1], cclxvi, [2 (adv.)] pp. A 19th-century type reproduction, itself now venerable, of Coverdale's 1535 Bible: the first complete translation of the Old and New Testaments into Modern English, as well as the first complete printed English translation. Bagster, who had reprinted Tyndale's New Testament in 1836, here had the text set — preserving all original orthography and abbreviations — in what the New York Review described at the time as "a clear type of the antique cast," with black-letter headers. John Brain steel-engraved the frontispiece portrait of Coverdale, which is followed by a facsimile of the original woodcut title-page by Holbein the Younger. An advertisement for Bagster's "just published" memorials of Coverdale is tipped in.    Copies of the 1535 first edition have been scarce virtually ever since it was printed, and => this Bagster reprinting made the landmark work widely and handsomely available for the first time.         Darlow & Moule 1152; Rumball-Petre 58. Later black buckram, spine with neat gilt-stamped lettering; one back corner bumped. Frontispiece portrait with a little foxing not affecting appearance of image; engraved title-page with light smudge in lower margin; one leaf with small paper flaw and short tear in lower outer margin. Title-page with old pencilled annotation: "(original ed. quoted @ 3000.00 by Beauchamp)"; other … [Click Below for Full Description]

John. W. Parker, 1838. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Rebound in quarter leather. Binders label on the rear pastedown in arabic. Ainsworth constructed geological sections across northern Syria and the Taurus Mountains, discovered several deposits of commercially important minerals in Mesopotamia and Anatolia, and explored a substantial part of south-east Persia. With Chesney, Ainsworth published the first account of the expedition in the 'Journal of the Royal Geographical Society' (1837) and the next year wrote his own fuller account as 'Researches in Assyria, Babylonia and Chaldaea' (1838)." - ODNB Condition: Very good.
