William Swainson, Sir William Jardine - editor
EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1838 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 31 hand coloured plates and a hand coloured vignette title page. With volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Haller; hand coloured vignette title page with picture of Green Tody; 2 further title pages; advert; contents listing; Memoir of Baron Haller; text; and 31 hand coloured plates bound at the rear. The cloth binding is in good condition being generally clean (some fading to board edges, a couple of very small marks) and sound (slight bumping to corners) having been fairly recently rebacked retaining the original spine and providing new endpapers. The contents are very clean - some text pages are unopened and the plates are all tissue-guarded and clean. There is some brown toning to the plate paper (common with this work). The hand colouring is lighter than I have seen on some plates. (There is considerable variation in plate colouring across the Naturalist's Library series, reflecting the number of people who worked on the original publication). Plates 23-25 have a slight indentation in the paper across one corner which looks to be an original paper fault. Please inquire if you would like more images of the plates.

CARNE, John.
London, Fisher, Son, & Co., [1836-1838]. 4to, 3 volumes. Original publisher's blue watered cloth, richly ornamented and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt; pp. [4], 80; 76; 100, [4]; 3 steel-engraved additional titles, 117 steel-engraved plates by W. Finden, retaining tissue guards, and 2 engraved maps; slightly rubbed and scuffed, light spotting and browning, otherwise a very good set. First edition, in the rarely seen publisher's binding. John Carne travelled through the Ottoman Empire in 1821, publishing Letters from the East in 1826, and was chosen by Fisher to be the author of the present work, which was intended to be the first in a series entitled 'The Turkish Empire Illustrated'. Carne wrote the descriptive text which accompanies each illustration; the majority of these are engraved from views executed by Bartlett during his first journey in the area in 1834-1835, and they are probably his first illustrations to appear in print. Only in the third volume do engravings by other artists such as Thomas Allom appear. Atabey 199; Blackmer 291; Röhricht 1690; Weber I, 1125.

SCHLEIDEN, Mattias Jakob (1804-1881)
Berlin: Viet, 1838. First edition. Four leaves sprung, title lined on verso/From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D. 8vo. Schleiden's paper is on pp. 136-76. Entire volume: 608 pp. 16 plates at end on 15 leaves, most folding. Early 20th-century cloth. Schleiden co-founded cell theory, along with Theodor Swann and Rudolf Virchow, and was one of the first German biologists to accept Darwin's theory of evolution. "Schleiden demonstrated that plant tissues are made up of and developed from groups of cells, of which he recognized the 'cytoblast' or cell-nucleus. He observed with great accuracy certain other activities of the cell, and is an important figure in the development of the cell theory. Unfortunately he held that young cells develop spontaneously from the cytoblast, an acceptance of the theory of spontaneous generation" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 112). Although his theory of spontaneous generation of the cell was incorrect, Schleiden's work marked an important stage in the development of modem cell theory. Milestones of Science 175; Norman 1907; Printing and the Mind of Man 307a (Schleiden "presented for the first time the notion that a plant, for example, is a community of cells"). Rare.

Vogl, Johann Nepomuk, Schriftsteller (1802-1866).
1838. 1 S. 4to.

The principal object of this work is to describe "Men and Things" in New-Grenada as the writer in reality found them to be then existing; and, if possible, to afford the man of business, as well as travellers generally, some more correct information on many points of interest to them than myself had been able to glean from the page … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fry 1838", very small 8vo, approximately 72 x 54 mm, 2 7/8 x 2 inches, pages: iv, (188), collation: (A)-M8, M8 is a blank with printer's name J. Elizabeth Fry was a Quaker prison reformer who transformed the lives of countless thousands of prisoners, convicts and homeless people, and whose ideas on criminal justice are still practised today. It was Stephen Grellet, a Quaker, who turned her attention to the shocking conditions in which women prisoners and their children lived at Newgate Prison: hungry, cold, dirty, without bedding, even newborn babies without clothing. Elizabeth's first visit to the prison with baby clothes and kindness established a rapport with the women. Soon she set up the first women's prison visiting committees and went on to bring order and cleanliness to Newgate. She started the first-ever prison school which was a great success. Her ideas and practices were to be influential and effecti … [Click Below for Full Description]
