KORF, Feodor Feodorovich.
St. Petersburg: Guttenberg, 1838. Octavo. Original pale blue printed wraps. Housed in a black cloth flat back solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Wraps rubbed, soiled and chipped, now restored at the spine, and small piece missing from the front panel in-filled, small ink-stamp removed from the title page, pale toning throughout, but overall very good. First and only edition, uncommon, with just six locations world-wide. This copy with the author's presentation inscription in ink to the front panel of the wraps; "To the Russian Academy, presented by the Author, 17 Nov. 1838". The book was never translated or republished in Russia. The author, Russian writer and journalist Fyodor Korf (1803-1853), describes his service as Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Tehran in 1834-5, under count Ivan Simonich (1794-1851) Russian plenipotentiary in Persia 1832-38. Korf went to Tabriz (north-western Iran), the residence of Mohammad Mirza Qajar (1808-48), at the time heir to the throne, travelling via Georgiyevsk (in modern-day Stavropol Krai in the North Caucasus), Yekaterinodar (Krasnodar), Vladikavkaz, Tiflis (Tbilisi), Erevan, and Nakhchivan. When Mohammad ascended to the throne as shah, Korf followed him to Teheran, after 6 months returning to Russia via Tabriz. Overall Korf was not impressed by the country; "When I crossed the Persian border, nobody asked me for my passport, nobody cared who I was, where I came from or went and why, that is not fashionable here. I have to confess that this first, disorderly impression, when I got to know Persia, was not very favourable for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mrs. Jameson
London: Henry Colburn, 1838. Second edition, enlarged, this copy handsomely bound and extra-illustrated with approximately 230 additional plates added to the original contents. Two volumes in bright red morocco leather over red cloth, raised spine bands with gilt decorated compartments, marbled edges and endpapers, each volume just under 11" tall and more than 2" thick. Some surface wear to the extremities, including some scuffing to the joints, a bit of roughness to the spine head of volume 2, spine leather and gilt still bright, good hinges, firm text blocks, clean pages with T. A. Shaw 1854 in pencil at the top of each title page, no other markings, some occasional foxing, depending on the plates and backings. The extra illustrations are mainly expertly mounted engravings from older sources, most identified in the same handwriting in pencil, mostly portraits, some landscapes including a lovely hand colored folding plate of St. James's Park engraved by Parr for Robert Wilkinson; another similar of Charing Cross; a folding color plate of Pope's House; several other folding plates, some of which appear to be 18th century or earlier. Also includes a pencil drawing of Thomas Thyme identified with the same handwriting below, and a folding plan of London accompanied by a much larger London panorama in the year 1647 (10.5" x 36") by R. Benning. The various illustrations were probably added - our guess - around the same 1854 date written on the title pages.. Hard Cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Santarem, Manuel Francisco de Barros e Sousa de Mesquita de Macedo Leitao e Carvalhosa, Visconde de.
1838. 8vo. 64 pp. Burgundy paper spine. First and only edition. Discusses trade in silk and attempts at silk production in various parts of the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal, Valencia, Murcia, etc., from ancient times until the 1820s, with some emphasis on the efforts of the Arabs. The second Visconde de Santarem (1791-1856) has been called "the greatest figure in the history of Portuguese cartography" (Cortesão, History of Portuguese Cartography I, 23); in fact, it was Santarem who coined the term "cartographia". He traveled to Brazil with the royal family in 1807 and held various diplomatic posts; he also served as Keeper of the Royal Archives at Torre do Tombo from 1824 until 1833, when he was dismissed for political reasons. Although he spent the rest of his life in Paris, his standing with the Portuguese government later improved to the point that the government funded many of his publications, and appointed him Keeper of the Torre do Tombo without requiring him to return to Portugal. Porbase locates copies at the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Innocêncio V, 435-438. OCLC 458944557.
