Dickens, Charles
London: Richard Bentley, 1838 Three volumes. Illustrated with twenty-four streel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank. First edition, first issue, with "Boz" on the title pages and the "Fireside plate" in Volume III. Publisher's variant horizontally-ribbed cloth, with arabesque designs to the boards in blind, four bands to the spine in blind, lettered in gilt, pale yellow coated endpapers. About very good, with some minor repairs to the cloth at the spines, a few minor chips to the spine ends, a few signatures slightly loosened, hinges very lightly starting inside the covers at the spine ends, some light soiling and dampstaining to the boards, the usual toning and minor spotting to the plates, Vol. II with an erased former owner's inscription to the front free endpaper, a few scattered spots to the otherwise clean pages. Overall, a presentable copy of Dicken's second novel in the original cloth. Smith I, 4. This copy of Oliver Twist is the first issue of the text in book form, with Dickens credited as "Boz" on the title page and with the final plate, "Rose Maylie and Oliver," depicting a fireside scene. Later issues of the first edition contain a cancel title page citing Charles Dickens as the author and have the "Church plate," which shows Rose and Oliver in a church, as the final illustration. As Smith explains in his bibliography, "When Bentley decided to publish Oliver in book form before its completion in his periodical, Cruikshank had to complete the last few plates in haste" and Dickens was not able to review them "until the eve of publication." Published shortly aft … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schumann, Robert, German composer (1810-1856).
[Leipzig], 11. II. 1838. - 8vo. 1 p. A fine letter from the difficult engagement years, written to Clara's stepmother and Robert Schumann's future mother-in-law Clementine Wieck, inquiring whether "Madam Wieck" knows anything new about Clara's approaching appointment as Imperial and Royal Chamber Virtuoso by the Austrian Emperor: "Yesterday, Count Zerbst, a distant relative of the Austrian envoy, visited me and told me, that his lord, the Prince of Schönburg, took a great interest in the matter and that the appointment was imminent. I can imagine your great joy. But please do me the favour and let me know if you hear anything more specific so that I can have it inserted in the journal [.]". - Austria's highest musical award was bestowed on Clara on March 15th during her concert tour in Vienna - an honour all the more remarkable for her being such a young artist, as well as a foreigner. It is, therefore, little surprise that Robert Schumann wished to see the fact announced in the "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik", which he edited from 1834 to 1844. - Noticeable browning; some brownstaining. New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1838. x,[2],215pp. plus folding map. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards. Minor foxing. Very good. "This is one of the earliest books published about Texas after it became a republic...the quotations from participants are of considerable historical value. The descriptive portions add much to our knowledge of the early republic....The work begins with an excellent summary of Mexican history from 1821 to 1835, followed by a sketch of Texas history from 1832 to 1835, ending with Cos' retreat from San Antonio. The events of 1836 are described, including quotations from participating Texans and from...Mexican accounts, such as Almonte's diary....Of particular value are the account of Santa Anna's capture [and his] confrontation with Houston shortly afterwards. Newell was one of the first to seduce Sam Houston into giving particulars of the campaign" - Jenkins. The map shows all of Texas north to the Red River. "One of the rare and reliable books on Texas" - Raines. The appendix prints some important historical documents regarding the revolution. BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 151. HOWES N115, "aa." CLARK III:215. Cfr.
