Remains a very good copy indeed, a well-preserved example of the uncommon original cloth. First edition of this important Arabian travel account: the entire first volume is dedicated to the author's travels in Oman and the Gulf, and includes vivid eyewitness reports of the tribes making up the ruling families of today's United Arab Emirates. Wellsted (1805-1842), a British naval officer in the Bombay Marine, was "for a considerable period" (vol. 1 p. 252) employed in the survey of the Persian Gulf initiate … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mais, une fois la paix signée, son père s'oppose à la ratification de son brevet de sous-lieutenant signé par le général Brune parce qu'il n'a nullement l'intention de le voir poursuivre une carrière militaire. Brumby, R.T.
[Tuscaloosa: Joel White, printer (?), 1838]. First separate edition. 12mo. 16 pp. The author, Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology at the University of Alabama, was asked to analyze the waters of Blount Springs by the proprietor, Thomas Williams, who requested that he publish his findings in an edition of 2,000 copies, "in such a manner as would be most generally read." Brumby was also asked to produce a study of the general geology of the state for inclusion in Professor Frederick Barnard's almanac. According to the author's note to the reader on the introductory page, in an attempt to satisfy the requests of both men, the text for this pamphlet was published by Barnard in his almanac (Bernard's Alabama State Almanac for 1839 was printed by Joel White in 1838): "After the printer had struck off the required number of copies for the almanac, two thousand copies were published separately, for the use of Col. Williams." Ellison 353 (without actually citing a copy, giving author and title only, the information taken from an 1839 Cahawba newspaper). Not in Owen, Sabin, Howes, or Streeter. OCLC locates two copies of this separately printed pamphlet (Alabama, Emory). Fine untrimmed copy in an attractive 20th-century binding. Recent antique-style half-calf and marbled boards, red leather spine label, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, London, England. (8980).

Ottimo esemplare.

Pixerécourt (1773-1844), the author of more than a hundred plays, "the Shakespeare and Corneille of the Boulevards," was one of the founders of the Société des Bibliophiles français. The catalogue has 2313 lots plus a final lot describing Pixerécourt's magnificent collection on the French Revolution, which occupies pages 343-414. This sold for 3000 frs. and was divided between the Bibliothèque du Sénat and the Louvre. An interleaved copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. DICKENS, Charles.
1838?/1841 The first letter 11 lines on 1p. 8vo, paper watermarked 'B&T Sweet Apple 1830', with integral blanks; the second 14 lines on 1p. 8vo with integral blanks. Both letters relate to articles Archer has written, almost certainly for Bentley's Miscellany. Dickens responds to one of them in detail (see Pilgrim Letters, vol. I, p.485). The first letter here from Twickenham Park, which is only briefly recorded in Pilgrim Letters, vol. VII addenda, p.792, 'begs to inform ... that he has not yet refused any paper bearing the title he names' and directs further correspondence to 48 Doughty Street. The second letter is rather warmer in tone: 'Mr Charles Dickens presents his compliments to Mr Archer, and perfectly well remembers (now that it is recalled to his recollection) the paper... and which he no longer has an opportunity of publishing. It may be pleasant to Mr Archer to know that it returns quite fresh to Mr Dickens' memory, although at the time when the note was written he had some three or four score Mss every month...'The first ALS is with a later envelope (unsigned) with mourning border, addressed by Dickens to Archer at Churchill, Bristol; it is clearly postmarked '25 OC 1848', although Pilgrim Letters date it incorrectly as 1838 (p.793, vol. VII, addenda). The second is with its correct envelope (unsigned), addressed by Dickens to Archer at Mr. Spence's, Finchley Common, redirected in another hand to Bedford Street, Bedford Row, London, postmarked 'SP 3 1841'. DICKENS, CHARLES
London: Richard Bentley, 1838. First Edition; three volumes; first issue; with “Boz” on the title pages and with the “fireside” plate in volume three. Publisher’s cloth; variant state binding with “London/ Bentley” at the foot of the spines (according to Smith, not a point of any significance); some cloth fading, minor wear and spotting; slight ink marks on one title page; a very clean set with only occasional spots and foxing; in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with chemises. The "fireside" plate was one of several illustrations by Cruikshank that were rushed to complete the book. Reviewing the plates before publication, Dickens objected to this illustration and ordered a new one prepared. Early copies have this original plate, as well as "Boz" on the title page, which also displeased the author. The book was published on November 9, 1838, and changes were made in copies prepared between the 9th and the 16th.

Maclure, William
New Harmony, IN: Printed at the School Press, 1838. First edition, third issue of volume one, first editions of volumes two and three. 8vo. 3 volumes: (4), 483; (8), 556; (2), iv, 320 pp. Maclure (1763-1840), a native of Scotland, was a pioneer American geologist and agricultural educator. His Observations on the Geology of the United States (1817) included the first geological map of the United States. Intent on establishing an agricultural school to educate the working classes, he purchased a large tract of land in Spain 1819, but the project failed and he moved his operations to Robert Owens's community of New Harmony, persuading Thomas Say, Charles LeSeur, and others to join him there. Ill health eventually occasioned his move to Mexico, where for years he contributed "letters and articles on political, social, and economic topics to the New Harmony Disseminator. These papers were collected and published" in the volumes offered here (see DAB). Contemporary book ticket on the front pastedown of the first two volumes, "Remus Payne / Kentucky" enclosed within a decorative border; Payne (1811-1880) was a Scott County, Kentucky, land owner and farmer who served in the state legislature in the 1850s. Howes M-162, 163, and 164 (each of the three volumes receive a separate entry). Sabin 43554. Complete sets are rare in trade (with no sales recorded in the past 39 years (ABPC, 1976-2014). EMERSON, RALPH WALDO.
Boston: James Munroe, 1838. 8vo, original printed blue wrappers, 31 pages. Emerson's boldest statement to date on the Transcendentalist cause and the need to question religious tradition: "Let me admonish you, first of all, to go alone; to refuse the good models, even those which are sacred in the imagination of men, and dare to love God without mediator or veil." Contemporary ink ownership signature of Abner J. Phipps on the upper wrapper - a graduate of Phillips Academy, Dartmouth College (1838) and resident of Boston - who was probably present at Emerson's address. Wrappers slightly soiled; and worn; but still a fine copy of an elusive, early Emerson title which when found at all is usually disbound. Enclosed in a chemise and cloth slipcase.
