Life of Thomas Telford, Civil Engineer, written by Himself; containing a Descriptive Narrative of his Professional Labours.Edited by John Rickman.with a Preface, Supplement, Annotations, and Index

      - Large atlas vol.: engraved frontis. port. of Telford & 82 engraved plates (some folding, some double-page). 2 printed leaves of title & list of plates. Text: one engraved plate & illus. in the text. xxiv, 719 pp. Thick 4to. Two vols., orig. cloth, each volume with attractive new calf spines & corners. London: Payne & Foss, 1838. First edition and a very nice example of this magnificent book. "Telford was one of the greatest of the early civil engineers and famous for his canals and roads and for his aqueducts and bridges. Many of his works were on a hitherto unprecedented scale and he also played a major role in the developing use of cast iron for bridge construction. The present autobiography is the best source of information on his achievements. It contains copies of the reports, surveys, letters, specifications, agreements and experiments for all his major schemes. These include the Caledonian and Götha (Sweden) ship canals, the Birmingham & Liverpool Junction canal and the Ellesmere Canal with its extraordinary cast-iron aqueduct at Pont-y-cysyllte as well as such splendid bridges as the suspension bridge with its then unprecedented span which took the Holyhead Road over the Menai Strait, the beautiful Conway suspension bridge or the fine cast-iron bridge at Galton which crossed over his own massive cutting for the Birmingham Canal. All these are magnificently illustrated in the accompanying folio atlas, both in section and elevation, and in many cases details of construction together with the machinery and tools employed are also shown. The book was in preparation at Telford's death and was completed by his friend, John Rickman, who had been Secretary to the Commission on the Caledonian Canal."Elton, Cat. 15, 93. A handsome set. Bookplate in text volume of George Giles and with a letter tipped-in presenting this work to him. Stamp in gilt on upper cover of the atlas volume of the Institution of Civil Engineers.         NARRATIVE OF AN EXPEDITION IN H.M.S. TERROR, UNDERTAKEN WITH A VIEW TO GEOGRAPHICAL DISCOVERY ON THE ARCTIC SHORES, IN THE YEARS 1836-37

London, 1838. viii,456pp. plus twelve lithographed plates and folding map. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine gilt, leather labels. Minor shelf wear. Quite clean internally. Very good. A scarce account of Sir George Back's 1836 expedition to complete a survey of the coastline between Regent's Inlet and Cape Turnagain. The result was a terrible and harrowing journey. Off Cape Comfort the ship was frozen in for ten months, and then drifted up Frozen Channel. For three days she was on her beam ends, and was not completely free until four months later. On July 14, the following year, a submerged iceberg lifted the ship bodily to one side, but she was eventually righted. "Back's narrative contains principally detailed descriptions of the ice floe, its changes and its effects on the ship, together with brief notes on those sections of the Southampton Island coast to which short visits were made. Includes lists of equipment, supplies, and personnel, mention of unusual coldness of the summer of 1836, and accounts of trading with Baffin Island Eskimos" - ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY.         La peau de chagrin. Études sociales.

Paris, H. Delloye (und) Victor Lecou, 1838. - 2 Bll., 402 S., 1 Bl. Mit 1 großen Stahlstich-Titelvignette ("Skelett") und 100 Stahlstich-Textillustrationen von Gavarni u.a. Gr.8vo (25,5 x 17 cm). Rotbrauner Maroquinband d.Z. (sog. Franzband) mit RVergoldung und RTitelei, blind-und goldgepr. Deckelfileten (ornamental) sowie goldgeprägten Eckfleurons und dreiseit. Goldschnitt. Blindgepr. - Bibliographie: Vicaire I 184.         [Fore-edge Painting] Guillaume Tell, ou, La Suisse Libre. Et Éliezer et Nefhthali

London: Chez Whittaker & Co., 1838. Full Morocco. Very Good. A fore-edge painting on a near miniature, and very thin, book. The fore-edge painting is of the Château de Jarnac, which is close to Paris.16mo. 13 by 8 cm. 148 pp. The painting is a panorama of the chateau, a pretty stone bridge leading up to it and the surrounding parkland. Some of the detail of the painting is assuredly lost as it has faded over time and with use, but the painting nonetheless retains a fairly impressive level of detail given the thin text block the artist had to work with, and we would say that a fore-edge on such a thin volume qualifies as quite the novelty. The binding itself is a lovely full brown morocco with gilt swirly decoration and an armorial centerpiece. The binding is rubbed along the joints and has other indicia of moderate wear. There is a chunky chip from the FEP (large in relation to the book's size). This endpaper nonetheless is worth retaining since it bears the calligraphic inscription made when the book was awarded as a school or academic prize.

Tagebuch. / Angefangen Stedar, den 17. Mai / 1837 [handschriftlich].

1837/1838. - 69 unpaginierte Blätter aus drei aufeinanderfolgenden Heften (Kladden). 21 x 16,5 cm (Kladden), 22 x 18 cm (Einband). Späterer (20. Jh.) Leineneinband. April in Sternberg (Mecklenburg) geboren. OLIVER TWIST; Or the Parish Boy's Progress

London: Richard Bentley, 1838. First edition. First edition in three volumes in the original publisher's fine diaper cloth with arabesque designs on the boards. First issues with Boz on the title pages (not "Charles Dickens") and with the "fireside plate" in volume 3. Bound with all half-titles and ads as required by Smith. An excellent, unrepaired set. Books one and two are Near Fine, slightly faded on the spine, but with uncracked hinges and only the slightest foxing. Book three Very Good on account of an ink stain on the front board and minor separation within the page block at p. 2-3. A uniform set with an amorial bookplate on the front end paper of each volume ("Lank"). Dickens' second novel, "Oliver Twist," is a dark and biting work, but one that is balanced with Oliver's indefatigable innocence and charm. Often cited as the first Victorian novel to feature a child protagonist, it was developed as a social commentary and a call for improving the conditions of London's destitute and orphan children. And it was immensely successful, both as a novel filled with memorable characters and also as a work prompting much needed reform. Today it remains high within the pantheon of Victorian literature and is a work that has been successfully adapted to both the stage and screen.

TROY. TAKEN FROM THE WEST BANK OF THE HUDSON, IN FRONT OF THE UNITED STATES ARSENAL.

New York: Henry J. Megarey, 1838. - Colored aquatint, image area 17 3/4 x 25 1/2 inches. Mild toning. Very good. Matted and framed. A wonderfully energetic and skillfully hand- colored view of Troy, New York from across the Hudson River, produced by Henry J. Megarey, the publisher of THE HUDSON RIVER PORTFOLIO. The artist, William James Bennett was a London-born watercolor painter and aquatint engraver, probably most famous for his 1841 view of New Orleans, one the finest depictions of American maritime commerce ever printed, and part of the same series of American city views as the current example. Bennett's Troy view is striking in its own right. "In this beautiful aquatint of Troy by the artist, William James Bennett we see a well-developed and busy city. The white-columned building in the left center is the First Presbyterian Church, erected in 1835-1836 (just in time to be included in the aquatint) and still standing today. The square tower with pinnacles to its right is Saint Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, erected in 1827- 1828 and also still standing. Making its way along the Hudson, further to the right, is the steam packet JOHN MASON, its deck, fore and aft, crowded with passengers. On the viewer's side of the Hudson, we are given a good idea of what well-dressed young men of the 1830s might be wearing. As is typical of Bennett's work, this view of Troy is a well- balanced pictorial image, containing elements of landscape and riverscape painting" - Deak. Deak refers to Bennett's series of nineteen scenes of late 1830s - early 1840s urban America as "the finest collection of folio views of American cities." The present example is a first state copy, with the word "TROY" unshaded. Exceedingly rare. DEAK, PICTURING AMERICA 479. STOKES, ICONOGRAPHY OF MANHATTAN ISLAND III, pp.619-22. STOKES & HASKELL, AMERICAN HISTORICAL PRINTS, P.1837-E- 53, pp.83-84. FIELDING, AMERICAN ENGRAVERS 152. ENO 494.

As membership and funds increase, services such as a retained surgeon, sick relief and funding for funerals are introduced. By October 1839, almost 100 people were 'invited to attend the anniversary' - an important annual celebration. All is not plain sailing: there is a 'Protest' to the District Officers at Wisbeach (sic) for not giving sufficient assistance, while one of them, P. Gill, charged a fee for 'casual instruction' while he had 'accidentally' passed through Crowland - a charge which was swiftly 'crossed from our bill'. The Lodge also fought against being forced to join a District Funeral Fund having set up their own and against a suggestion that the Lodge join up with Whittlesea. As well as settling internal disputes between Brothers, in January 1839 it was proposed that the venue for meetings be changed owing to the 'conduct of the hostess' and 'through the immorality practised in the next room' (presumably by either Mrs Clark or Thomas Clark, the treasurer); after a vote, gatherings would henceforth take place 'at the House of Abraham Blood - known by the sign of the George Hotel.' In May 1839, Henry Girdlestone was elected an Honorary Member having wagered that he could walk a thousand miles in a hundred days - and in fact completed 1,025 miles in 49 days. The 'Oddfellows' emerged from mediaeval trade guilds as friendly societies for mutual support by and for members in times of sickness and bad luck. Compared with freemasonic lodges centred on one trade or profession, members were working class tradesmen and craftsmen - such as wheelwrights, carters, labourers, millers, farmers and bricklayers - 'oddfellows' from an assortment of trades. This detailed manuscript record gives a very clear picture of such a friendly society, its fund-raising, disbursements, disputes and management.

His unsurpassed ability as a microscopist is well demonstrated in this doctoral thesis, written in Latin when he was only twenty-three years of age. In it he presented one of the fundamental truths of neurohistology by distinguishing between the gray postganglionic nerve fibers (Remark's fibers) and the white cerebrospinal nerves. He also demonstrated that the autonomic ganglia are the axones of nerve cells and are continuous with cells within the spinal cord. These axones were later called axis cylinders by Purkinje" (Heirs). - Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt.         Personal Sammelband of Army Court Martial Reports

Various locations, 1838-1852. 1/2 leather. This collection of 86 General Orders reports the results of important courts-martial conducted within the United States Army between 1838 and 1852. Each report ranges in size from one to 28 pages. All are in nice shape. The half-leather binding has been sympathetically rebacked. John Fitzgelrald Lee’s bookplate is inside the front cover. His penciled binding instructions are on a flyleaf, and two blanks have pencil notes identifying additional trial reports Lee wanted to include in the volume. Many of the reports are signed in ink by Roger Jones, the Adjutant General of the Army from 1825 to 1852, and six are signed by Samuel Cooper, who became the highest ranking Confederate general during the American Civil War. This volume was Lee’s personal reference collection of court martial reports, and no doubt many of them are of trials in which he participated including the famous 1848 mutiny court-martial of John Fremont (for declaring himself the Governor of California) where Lee served as the prosecuting attorney. Other important trials include the court-martial of Captain Seth Thorton after his unit of dragoons was captured by the Mexican Army sparking the Mexican-American War. The trials involved all of the major Army regiments and departments and were held throughout the country—including Florida (during the Seminole War), Texas (before statehood), Western territories, California—and in Mexico. In addition to suspensions and dismissals from service, suspensions of pay and rank, and confinement, more severe sentences (death by hanging and firing squad, branding, lashes with a cat-o-nine tails, etc.) were imposed upon enlisted soldiers for desertion, attempted murder, and murder. Many of the officers who were tried in these courts-martial went on to fame or notoriety including: Braxton Bragg, Don Carlos Buell, Ambrose Burnside, James Carleton, Rene DeRussy, William Harney, Nathaniel Lyon, Samuel Ringgold, James Ripley, Fayette Robinson, Alexander Shiras, and Charles S. Tripler. This reference collection of important court martial records collected by the military’s principal 19th century legal officer provides incredible window into rough-and-tumble, yet surprisingly refined, military life in antebellum America. (Short summaries of each court-martial will be provided with purchase.) The original office of the Judge Advocate of the Army was abolished in 1802 and the entire Judge Advocate General’s Corps was eliminated in 1821. After that time, line officers were detailed to serve as trial attorneys for courts-martial. Although Lee, a cousin of Robert E. Lee, was a graduate of West Point and an artillery officer, he had long hoped to become a lawyer and was frequently detailed to serve as a trial attorney at posts throughout the country. When the service decided to re-establish the position of Judge Advocate of the Army in 1849, Lee was the obvious choice. He served in the position until 1862 when the position was once more abolished. Just before his appointment as the Judge Advocate General, Lee served as an ordnance officer at the St. Louis Arsenal. His son, John Fitzgerald Lee, Jr. practiced law in the St. Louis after graduating from the University of Virginia and served as the president of the St. Louis Bar Association, president of the David Rankin School of Mechanical Trades, director of the St. Louis Public Library, and a member of the Washington University Board of Directors. In his later years, the senior Lee lived with his son in St. Louis where he died in 1884 and was buried in Cavalry Cemetery.

An Address Delivered Before the Senior Class in Divinity College, Cambridge

Boston: James Munroe, 1838, 1838. First edition. Myerson A7.1; BAL 5184. Wrappers slightly soiled; and worn; but still a fine copy of an elusive, early Emerson title which when found at all is usually disbound. Enclosed in a chemise and cloth slipcase.. 8vo, original printed blue wrappers, 31 pages. Emerson's boldest statement to date on the Transcendentalist cause and the need to question religious tradition: "Let me admonish you, first of all, to go alone; to refuse the good models, even those which are sacred in the imagination of men, and dare to love God without mediator or veil." Contemporary ink ownership signature of Abner J. Phipps on the upper wrapper - a graduate of Phillips Academy, Dartmouth College (1838) and resident of Boston - who was probably present at Emerson's address.

AN ORATION, delivered before the Literary Societies of Dartmouth College

1838. [very early Emerson, in wrappers] July 24, 1838. Published by Request. Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1838. Original printed light blue wrappers. First (and only separate) Edition of this very early Emerson oration -- delivered at Dartmouth College in July 1838, and published (1000 copies) in September by the co-founders (the year before) of today's Little Brown & Co. This piece would later be known as, and collected as, "Literary Ethics." This is very "early Emerson," preceded only by his NATURE (1836) and a couple of other orations delivered at Harvard (1837 & 1838); his next publication would not be for three more years -- his momentous first series of ESSAYS (1841), which would include "Self-Reliance."~This copy is still in the original delicate light-blue wrappers, the front of which reproduces (within a three-line border) the title page. Condition is just about fine (one vertical crease, quite likely from the original mailing). The upper margin of the front cover bears the inscription "Regards of R.C. Lane."         TROY. TAKEN FROM THE WEST BANK OF THE HUDSON, IN FRONT OF THE UNITED STATES ARSENAL

New York: Henry J. Megarey, 1838. Colored aquatint, image area 17 3/4 x 25 1/2 inches. Mild toning. Very good. Matted and framed. A wonderfully energetic and skillfully hand-colored view of Troy, New York from across the Hudson River, produced by Henry J. The square tower with pinnacles to its right is Saint Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, erected in 1827-1828 and also still standing.... Making its way along the Hudson, further to the right, is the steam packet JOHN MASON, its deck, fore and aft, crowded with passengers. On the viewer's side of the Hudson, we are given a good idea of what well-dressed young men of the 1830s might be wearing.... As is typical of Bennett's work, this view of Troy is a well-balanced pictorial image, containing elements of landscape and riverscape painting" - Deak. Subjects of the chapters include Matanzas (Cuba), Crete, Kurdistan, Baalbec, Antioch, Natal, the Cape of Good Hope, Damascus, Circassia, Peru, Lebanon, and Oman.Eduard Friedrich Poeppig (1798-1868), German botanist, zoologist and explorer, was sent by the University of Leipzig to gather botanical specimens in North and South America. He spent considerable time in Cuba (1823-24), Pennsylvania (1824-26), and Chile, Peru, and Brazil (1826-1832). Colas 935. Lipperheide 2120. Vgl. Hiler 261.
