An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical Statistical, and Historical, of the United States, and the adjacent countries

Boston & Cincinnati: stereotyped and printed by Fulsom, Wells & Thurston of Cambridge, Mass. for Weeks, Jordan & Co. of Boston and Edward Lucas & Co. of Cincinnati, [1838]. Folio. (19 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches). Engraved additional title with integral hand-coloured decorative pictorial surround, 39 hand-coloured engraved maps and town-plans (34 maps [one double-page], 5 town-plans), by G.W.Boynton and others. Contemporary light brown half morocco over embossed cloth-covered boards, brown morocco title label on the upper cover, lettered in gilt, the spine divided into five compartments by wide semi-raised bands, the bands highlighted with gilt tooling, marbled endpapers. A fine copy of "one of the first American general atlases to supplement the maps with lengthy geographical descriptions" (Ristow), with detailed maps of the 28 States, and including an excellent early map of the Republic of Texas. Martin and Martin, in their entry on Bradford's 1835 map of Texas, also note that "Bradford published a completely new atlas in 1838, in a larger format, and the map of Texas it contained was even more clearly patterned on [Stephen Fuller] Austin's [Map of Texas, published in Philadelphia in 1830]." It was one of the first maps of Texas as a Republic to appear in an atlas. The atlas is made up of a general map of North America, two maps of Canada, a folding map of the United States, 28 maps of States, a map of the Republic of Texas, a map of the islands of the Caribbean and five town-plans of eight U.S. cities (Washington, New Orleans, Louisville and Cincinnati on one sheet, and single sheet plans of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore). Unlike many atlases of the period, the present work includes extensive text (170pp. in total). Each engraving is accompanied by explanatory articles on the history, economics and geography of the area, as well as a great deal of contemporary statistical information. The provenance is particularly interesting: Theodore Sutton Parvin was born in Cedarville, Cumberland County, N. J., on January 15, 1817; and died June 28, 1901. "He was graduated at Woodward College, Cincinnati, in 1836; he studied law; was private secretary of the first governor of Iowa Territory, Robert Lucas, in 1838, and was the first librarian of that territory. Later he was librarian and professor in the Iowa State University; was a founder of the Iowa State Historical Society in 1857, and for the years 1863-65 was its corresponding secretary and editor. He was the founder, in 1844, of the Iowa Masonic Library, and through his exertions this library has its present building at Cedar Rapids. From its foundation until his death, fifty-seven years, he was its librarian" (Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, [1905]. vol.X, part II, p.871). Le Gear L33; cf. Thèse présentée à la faculté des sciences de Paris... Sur les vitesses rélatives de la lumière dans l'air et dans l'eau.Paris: Bachelier, 1853. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy of Foucault's rare doctoral thesis on the speed of light, in which he provides a convincing proof for the wave theory of light. Norman 820.

In the 1840s Foucault undertook a series of optical experiments using an apparatus of rotating mirrors to determine the velocity of light. Originally developed by Charles Wheatstone to measure the velocity of electricity, the rotating mirror apparatus had been proposed as an instrument for the measurement of light in 1838 by Dominique-Francois Arago who failed in his own attempts to carry out the experiment. Foucault's initial work was carried out in conjunction with the physicist Armand Hippolyte Louis Fizeau (1819-1896); but a personal dispute broke up their partnership in 1847 and the two collaborators became rivals, working separately on the same problem using the same technique. Both reached the same conclusion, but while Fizeau was the first to obtain, in 1849, a precision measurement of the velocity of light, Foucault pre-empted him in announcing, on 30 April 1850, that light travels faster in air than in water, a decisive argument in favour of the wave theory of light, which by the mid-nineteenth century had become generally accepted. In his thesis Foucault gives a detailed account of his experiment, illustrating his apparatus; it was not until 1862 that he was able to determine a numerical value for the speed of light, of about 298,000 kilometers per second, a figure significantly smaller, and more accurate, than Fizeau's.

Foucault (1819-68) is today best known for the pendulum experiments demonstrating the rotation of the earth which he performed in 1851. Perhaps he considered these experiments to be unsuitable as a thesis topic as the result (the rotation of the earth) was well known to everyone, whereas the results of his air-and-water experiments, though expected by most scientists, were new.

En français dans le texte 270; Norman 820.. 4to (282 x 230 mm), pp. [iv], 35, [1], with one large folding engraved plate. Original printed wrappers, unopened. Marginal corrections to text on pages 3 and 5 (in the author's hand?). Very rare in such fine condition

A Geological Map of England & Wales, and Part of Scotland, Showing also the Inland Navigation by Means of Rivers and Canals, with their Elevation in Feet Above the Sea Together with the Rail Roads & Principal Roads.

Map dimensions 137 x 99 cm, overall dimensions 145 x 101 cm. Large folding geological map with a cross-section of southern England from Land's End to the German Ocean across the lower margin and a further cross-section of the region between St. George's Channel and the North Sea, all vividly coloured according to the strata. Scale: 10 miles to 1 1/8th inch. The map divided into 36 sections and mounted on linen, textured paper to the folded end sections, folds into the original slipcase with the publisher's gilt lettered title label to the upper board. Save for some light wear to the case, an excellent example. The map was first published in 1835 and was frequently updated and reissued using fresh evidence gathered from geological fieldwork. This is the fourth state dated as above, with Knipe's name excised from the title and with the Walkers' address given as No. 9 Castle Street, Holborn.

Some brownspotting. X + 79pp.. Table of the Logarithms of the Natural Numbers from 1 to 108000,

third edition second [?] impression, xx, 202pp plus final leaf with publisher's imprint, two line errata on verso title, on buttercup yellow paper, tall octavo, contemporary polished calf, an excellent tall copy, London, Knight, 1838. Photograph available on request. Van Sinderen 33: this edition not listed - all editions are very rare in commerce. This edition not in the British Library. This key book was a major effort to print in stereotype - for protection against errors - a really accurate set of the logarithmic tables. Babbage was obsessed by the need for such accuracy and was concerned that such tables should be easily and accurately read - hence the yellow paper (copies are known also on green and on buff paper). It was the necessity to mechanise calculation for tables that were totally accurate that was the major impetus to Babbage's construction of the Difference Engine. The idea of a machine to perform calculation and tabulation automatically was a milestone in the history of computing. "Babbage designed his Difference Engine no. 1 to mechanize production of mathematical tables such as these. However, when Babbage undertook the production of these tables in 1826 he had only a small model of the machine. Babbage did not have a working portion of the Difference Engine no. 1 until 1832, and even that was insufficient to compute mathematical tables. Because of his inability to mechanize table production Babbage did not attempt to compute new tables, Instead, to assure the greatest accuracy possible, the proofs of these tables were checked a total of nine times against the tables of Callet, Hutton, Vega, Briggs, Gardiner, and Taylor, with the result that only nine errors were found in the first edition. These were corrected in the second edition of 1831, and no further errors were found in the tables in any of the later editions. To insure maximum legibility and ease of use, Babbage gave careful consideration to the tables' typography, printing several test sheets on different colors of paper to discover which was the least fatiguing to the eye. The first edition (1827) was printed on a yellow-tinted paper, as were some copies of the third edition." (Origins of Cyberspace). Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace, 50.
