In zwei Lieferungen. Erste Lieferung (all publ.).

Berlin, gedruckt und verlegt Georg Reimer, 1838, Folio, 1 Bl., 60 pp., 1 Bl., 4 (1 color.) v. Schumann, Troschel et Müller ad. nat. del., Grüzmacher gestochene Tafeln, Halbleinenband mit Rückenvergoldung u. Rückenschild feines Exemplar. Erste und einzige Ausgabe! Grundstein mikroskopischer Untersuchungen krankhafter Gewebe! The founder of pathological Histology as an indepedent field, and the first microscopical study of diseased itssue, by which Johannes Müller (1801-1858) showed that the cell theory was a requirement for the study of cancer. In the tumors which he studied Müller identfied cells, their nuclei, granules, fibres, and crystals. The illustrations in the book show better than words what Müller saw. He was thus the source for the work of his pupil Rudolf Virchow.Garrison & Morton 2612 Long, A History of Pathology, 187-89 Haagensen, Books of Cancer, no. 41

Paris, Louis Desessart, 1838. 4 vols. 8vo. Quarter dark green calf over marbled boards, marbled edges and endpapers, spine with raised bands, tooled in gilt and decorated in blind; bound without the map as sometimes the case; a little faded in places, but overall a sturdy, clean and uniform set. First edition. Combe and Tamisier travelled as part of the Saint-Simon movement during the years 1835-1837 in an endeavour to contribute to the exploration of Abyssinia and knowledge of Ethiopian culture. The movement was based on socialist co-operative principles and sought to raise the status of women and workers. They sponsored many expeditions into Egypt, Yemen and other parts of Africa (possibly due to the fact that their leader was arrested for propagating dissent in 1832, and they were looking for a safe haven). In particular, Combe's work is best reputed for his attention to the details of the lives of women and disadvantaged peoples in the countries he visited. Combe went on to gain a reputation as an explorer of Ethiopia, and worked as an informal diplomat. The exploration reports of Combe and Tamisier were read widely amongst those with an interest, and served as a good source of information for the wider attempts to bring regions such as Abyssinia into the trade network.

Ainsworth constructed geological sections across northern Syria and the Taurus Mountains, discovered several deposits of commercially important minerals in Mesopotamia and Anatolia, and explored a substantial part of south-east Persia.       Paris, Maulde & Renou, 1838. - 8vo. 64 pp. Burgundy paper spine. First and only edition. Discusses trade in silk and attempts at silk production in various parts of the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal, Valencia, Murcia, etc., from ancient times until the 1820s, with some emphasis on the efforts of the Arabs. The second Visconde de Santarem (1791-1856) has been called "the greatest figure in the history of Portuguese cartography" (Cortesão, History of Portuguese Cartography I, 23); in fact, it was Santarem who coined the term "cartographia". He traveled to Brazil with the royal family in 1807 and held various diplomatic posts; he also served as Keeper of the Royal Archives at Torre do Tombo from 1824 until 1833, when he was dismissed for political reasons. Although he spent the rest of his life in Paris, his standing with the Portuguese government later improved to the point that the government funded many of his publications, and appointed him Keeper of the Torre do Tombo without requiring him to return to Portugal.

Rare - First German Edition of the first treatise on plastic Surgery in general theAutoplastie ou restauration des parties du corps qui ont été détruites, à la faveur d'un emprunt fait à d'autres parties plus ou moins éloignées (1836)."However we are indebted to Phillipe Frederic Blandin who, in 1836, published in Paris his summary of the state if the art. 'Of these 84 autoplasties there were 39 cases of rhinoplasty, seven of blepharoplasty, fourteen of cheiloplasty, nine of genioplasty, one of uranoplasty, three of bronchosplasty, two of cytosplasty, four of urethroplasty and five different skin autoplasties. The youngest patient was six and the oldest 67 years. Twelve had faulty adhesions from old ulcers on burns, three had congenital malformations, nine had gangrene, fifteen were operated on shortly before for cancer, nine had fistulas and the remaining 36 were mutilated by wounds or eczema, scrofula or syphilis. Five of these patients died of accidents, the occasional cause of which was the operation. Complications occurred post-operatively in 24 patients: in nine there was gangrene of the flap, the three the parts did not unite, 27 were afflicted by an erysipeloid inflammation and seven suffered nervous affections of a greater or lesser intensity. In 61 of 84 patients the healing was satisfactory. Consequently, according this review, which is naturally incomplete, three out of four patients were healed by the autoplasty, one of 17 was lost, accidents occurred in half and gangrene of the flap as observed in one of nine cases'." Antony Walker, The Progress of Plastic Surgery (1982), pp.XI-XIIPhilippe-Frédéric Blandin (1798-1849) French surgeon born in Aubigny, department of Cher from1821 he served as an anatomical assistant to the faculty of medicine in Paris, where he later worked as prosector (1824). In March 1826 he earned his aggregation in surgery with a dissertation titled "Diversae in abdomen liquidorum effusiones". From 1841 to 1849 he was a professor to the faculty of medicine (chair of opérations et appareils).Blandin is remembered today for his pioneer work in rhinoplasty and septoplasty. He is credited with coining the term autoplastie (autoplasty) to describe skin taken from same patient for grafting purposes. He provided an early description of the anterior lingual glands, which are mixed glands of the tongue that are sometimes referred to as "Blandin's glands". His best written effort is an atlas of anatomy and surgery called "Traité d'anatomie topographique" (1834).Zeis No.480 Zeis Index No.485 Garrison & Morton No.5743.1 (1st. French. Ed. 1836)

        Handbuch der plastischen Chirurgie.

Nebst einer Vorrede von J.F. Dieffenbach. - Berlin, G. Reimer, 1838, 8, XXII, 576 pp., mit 2 fein kolorierten doppelblattgroßen, gefalteten Kupfertafeln und zahlreichen Textholzschnitten, wohlerhaltener Pappband in Lederkassette. Optimum Omnium Das erste Handbuch der Plastischen Chirurgie The first textbook devoted soley to plastic surgery ERSTE AUSGABE des ersten Handbuches der plastischen Chirurgie. *Rare First Edition of the first textbook devoted to plastic surgery. " The term p l a s t i cs u r g e ry was first used by E. Zeis in the title of his book published in 1833" - Skinner, Medical terms. In the first chapter Zeis gives his reason for devising and introducing the term " P l a s t i s c h eC h i r u r g i e ". His "Handbuch" is also valuable for containing the first known bibliography and history of plastic surgery in the field (pp. XV - XXXI) which he greatly expanded into a bibliography and history of plastic surgery, published in 1863. With a forword by Dieffenbach. Dieffenbach inserted als whole pages containing descriptions of his most recent techniques. Dieffenbach here refers to himself throughout in the third person, chiefly he refers to the fifth section of his "Chirurgische Erfahrungen". But this fifth section did not appear, and it is a literary curiosity that a book which never has been published is quoted so often and with such exactitude.         Mr Owen's establishment at New Lanark, a failure!! As proved by Edward Baines, Esq. M.P. and other gentlemen, deputed with him by the parishioners of Leeds, to visit and inspect that establishment, and report thereon.

Leeds published by the Leeds District Board of the Association of All Classes of All Nations 1838 - 12mo., 12pp., preserved in modern wrappers with printed label on upper cover. A very good copy. First edition. The Leeds deputation, appointed by the Guardians of the poor in Leeds, comprised Edward Baines himself, together with Robert Oastler and John Cawood. They were asked to report upon the system of education pursued at New Lanark. Their report was entirely favourable. 'Mr. Owen's establishment is conducted in a manner superior to any other the Deputation ever witnessed, dispensing more happiness than perhaps any other Institution in the Kingdom. Public houses, and other resorts of the vicious are no where to be found in this happy village. Intoxication, the parent of so many vices and so much misery is indeed almost unknown here. No cursing or swearing is any where to be heard. There are here no quarrelsome men or brawling women. The inhabitants of this place form a more religious community than any other manufacturing establishment in the Kingdom'. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed ("Elizth Hamilton"), to General J.H. Astrom of Utica, N.Y.

New York, 1838. 1 page. 8vo. Half sheet. Minor marginal soiling. 1 page. 8vo. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton (1757-1854), widow of Alexander Hamilton and daughter of General Philip Schuyler, writes to General J.H. Ostrom of Albany, regarding payment of a debt: "I have the pleasure to send you the above check that you may receive the amount awarded to me by the Syracuse Rail Road, and after deducting the amount due to you, please remit me the Balance." The top half of the sheet, bearing the check, is not present. Elizabeth Hamilton was no stranger to financial problems; the Hamilton's struggled even at the height of Alexander's career, but his death as a result of a duel with Aaron Burr rendered "Elizabeth and [her] family virtually destitute. Left to pay her husband's debts and raise their children (the youngest was two), Elizabeth relied on the help of friends and family. The death of her father four months after her husband's provided her with some financial relief through her inheritance of property and money. She was able to repurchase The Grange, which had been sold at public auction. She also petitioned the government for her husband's army pension that he had waived. Not granted until 1837 through a special act of Congress, her petition provided her with $30,000 and included land. Even though Elizabeth spent her widowhood in poverty, she was active in charitable organizations. She held positions in the New York Orphan Asylum Society and founded orphanages in New York City and Washington, D.C. She was known to take homeless children into her own home..." (ANB).

F.W. Greenough, Philadelphia 1838 - Portrait. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Page measures 19.25" x 14" Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". As Superintendent of the Indian Trade Bureau, Thomas McKenney wanted to document the rapidly disappearing culture of the American natives. He activated the project, sponsored by the War Department, by commissioning writer James Hall and Charles Bird King, a renowned American portraitist. King painted the prominent Indians while they visited Washington D.C. as treaty delegates. Most of the original oil paintings were destroyed by fire in the Smithsonian Museum in 1865. These lithographs, published 1842-58, are all that remain and are still hailed as one of the best visual records of influential Native Americans of the nineteenth century. Children were considered blessings by all tribes, a sentiment evident in this portrait. The commonly used cradleboard is also illustrated. Overall toning with tape residue and chipping along edges. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

"Beiträge zur Phytogenesis"; In: Archiv für Anatomie, Physiologie und Wissenschaftliche Medicin. Jahrgang 1838. Edited by Johannes Müller (1808-1858)

Berlin: Viet, 1838. 8vo. Schleiden's paper is on pp. 136-76. Entire volume: 608 pp. 16 plates at end on 15 leaves, most folding. Early 20th-century cloth. Schleiden co-founded cell theory, along with Theodor Swann and Rudolf Virchow, and was one of the first German biologists to accept Darwin's theory of evolution. "Schleiden demonstrated that plant tissues are made up of and developed from groups of cells, of which he recognized the 'cytoblast' or cell-nucleus. He observed with great accuracy certain other activities of the cell, and is an important figure in the development of the cell theory. Unfortunately he held that young cells develop spontaneously from the cytoblast, an acceptance of the theory of spontaneous generation" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 112). Although his theory of spontaneous generation of the cell was incorrect, Schleiden's work marked an important stage in the development of modem cell theory. Milestones of Science 175; Norman 1907; Printing and the Mind of Man 307a (Schleiden "presented for the first time the notion that a plant, for example, is a community of cells"). Rare. Four leaves sprung, title lined on verso.

TEXTS FOR EVERY DAY IN THE YEAR, principally Practical and Devotional. Selected by Elizabeth Fry.

London, printed for Hamilton, Adams, and Co; Edmund Fry; and W. Darton and Son, Holborn Hill, circa 1838.. EDITION UNKNOWN, Preface dated 1831, INSCRIBED BY ELIZABETH FRY THE PRISON REFORMER on the verso front endpaper: "Mary Bullied from Eliz. Fry 1838", very small 8vo, approximately 72 x 54 mm, 2 7/8 x 2 inches, pages: iv, (188), collation: (A)-M8, M8 is a blank with printer's name J. Masters at the foot on recto, bound in mid brown cloth with embossed pattern, "TEXTS" in gilt on upper cover, pale yellow endpapers. Very slight wrinkling to spine, ink note in 2 margins, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. Elizabeth Fry was a Quaker prison reformer who transformed the lives of countless thousands of prisoners, convicts and homeless people, and whose ideas on criminal justice are still practised today. It was Stephen Grellet, a Quaker, who turned her attention to the shocking conditions in which women prisoners and their children lived at Newgate Prison: hungry, cold, dirty, without bedding, even newborn babies without clothing. Elizabeth's first visit to the prison with baby clothes and kindness established a rapport with the women. Soon she set up the first women's prison visiting committees and went on to bring order and cleanliness to Newgate. She started the first-ever prison school which was a great success. Later she saw to it that the prisoners were given useful occupation and taught skills. Uniquely for that time, she saw the prisoners as individual human beings and understood their need for self-respect. Her ideas and practices were to be influential and effective throughout Europe and eventually the world. All this Elizabeth did not accomplish on her own; she travelled widely in Britain, Ireland and Europe and everywhere she went her extraordinary compassion, eloquence and energetic common sense galvanised others into action'. (ODNB). Not in Bondy, a copy with the same imprint as ours held by the Society of Friends Library.(Copac), others listed with different publishers and printers.       NP [New York?]: John I. Donlevy, intaglio-chromographic and electrographic engraver, nd. Calligraphic bust-length oval portrait of George Washington, engraved by Donlevy, platemark 16 1/2 x 13 7/8 in. Matted, glazed and framed. Within the oval portrait which is based Stuart's "Lansdowne" image, Washington's face has been hand-colored. His birth and death dates are given in calligraphic style. At the head of the print is a small Masonic eye, and under the first word, a vignette of an eagle holding a flag and an olive branch in its beak, an arrows in its claw. Below the portrait is a small image of a hand, palm out, with a heart in the center. Washington's body, the frame around his portrait, and around the lettering is filled with different calligraphic and penmanship styles and types. Faintly creased along an old fold line, else a very nice image. The original image was engraved by R. Lowe in New York, "Presented to -- By -- As a Reward of Merit," (copyright 1838 by Samuel Green), and published by John Donlevy, N.Y. This is the second state, according to Charles Hart's "Catalogue of the Engraved Portraits of Washington," (NY: 1904). The text lines related to Lowe, Green and the Reward of Merit no longer appear, and Donlevy is listed as the engraver. [see entries 862 and 862a].
