        Clipped signature ("P. Henry")

3/4 x 2 inch slip, mounted to ALS Henry's son John Henry, Charlotte Court House, VA, November 7, 1838, 4to; docketed and addressed on verso. Loss to blank corners of letter. 3/4 x 2 inch slip, mounted to ALS Henry's son John Henry, Charlotte Court House, VA, November 7, 1838, 4to; docketed and addressed on verso. A cut signature of the Virginia statesman Patrick Henry (1736-1799), whose "Give me liberty or give me death speech" in Richmond in 1775 remains an integral moment in the mythology of the American Revolution. Henry was Virginia's first (and sixth) post-colonial Governor, and served in the Virginia State Assembly as well. The autograph is mounted on a letter from his son John Henry to a Reverend Samuel Alexander, reading in part: "I enclose you my fathers signature, agreeable to promise, cut from an old paper relating to private business. All his papers & letters of a public nature are deposited with the Young Men's Debating Society of Lynchburg & I expect that I have not in the house some letter of an interesting nature containing his signature to send you. John Henry." The Patrick Henry Debating Society of Lynchburg marched in a memorial parade for General Lafayett on July 15, 1836. We are unable to trace any other mention of its stewardship of Henry's papers.

      - The rare auction catalogues of Bérard's library and drawing collection, one of the most important assemblages of architecture and decorative arts of its time. An established architect, Bérard (1838-90), inherited the foundations of these collections from his father, André Denis (1806-73), who pioneered the formal study of historical architecture and design. The two sales fetched a total of 164,774 francs, an impressive sum for the period. Alfred de Champeaux, an early historian of decorative arts, composed the Preface for the second sale, which provides valuable information on the evolution of the collections from father to son. The first catalogue lists 1005 lots, many of which are composed of dozens of items. It is novel in its appreciation of all forms of art and books depicting European architecture and decoration from antiquity. It also offers works by Lepautre, Du Cerceau, Bullant, Marot, Meissonnier, and many other important architects and artists of the 17th-19th centuries. Much of this catalogue is annotated in various contemporary hands which provide personal accounts of the bidding and comments on several lots. At the end, pricelists have been tipped-in. The second of 585 lots features work by celebrated artists and architects such as Du Cerceau, Delaune, Gillot, Huet, Le Pautre, Percier, Soufflot, etc. Priced in pencil throughout in a contemporary hand. Nice copies. ? I: Lugt 49648. 2 p.l., 124 pp. Large 8vo, cont. red cloth-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. [Paris]: Rapilly, [1891]. [with]: (-).         Travels in Arabia.

London: John Murray,, 1838. 2 volumes, octavo (223 ×140 mm). Recent tan half calf, raised bands to spines, compartments decorated in gilt, black morocco label to second, marbled sides and endpapers, all edges untrimmed. Lithographic frontispiece to each volume and 5 similar plates, most by Louis Haghe from drawings by the author, 5 maps including a large folding route map, tables to the text. Mild toning to text-block, the occasional marginal spot, plates foxed, skilful restoration along top edge of large folding route map verso. A very good copy. First edition of this valuable Arabian travel account, of which the entire first volume is dedicated to the author's travels in Oman and the Gulf, and includes vivid eyewitness reports of the tribes making up the ruling families of today's United Arab Emirates. Wellsted (1805-1842), a British naval officer in the Bombay Marine, was "for a considerable period" (vol. 1 p. 252) employed in the survey of the Persian Gulf initiated after the siege of Ra's al-Khaymah in 1819. In 1830 he was appointed second lieutenant of the Palinurus and undertook an important survey of the Red Sea and the Gulf of 'Aqabah, described in the second volume; in 1833-4 he surveyed the southern coast of Arabia and visited Socotra, before, in 1835, being granted permission to travel in Oman "to investigate the manners and customs of the people of inner Oman, to locate the important towns and oases, and to investigate the topography of the country" (Marshall, p. 23). Travelling inland from Muscat he reached Samad, where he met Lieutenant Francis Whitelock, another Indian Navy officer. The pair criss-crossed inland Oman before local instability forced them to return to Shinas on the coast, from where Wellsted sailed back to India and Whitelock travelled overland to Sharjah. Chapters 16 and 17 of the first volume are exclusively dedicated to the Arabian shore of the Persian Gulf from Khasab to Bahrain, which Wellsted calls the "Pirate Coast". He describes an extended diplomatic visit to the emir of Sharjah, Sultan ibn Saqr Al Qasimi (d. 1866), in 1827, during which he spent several days among his entourage. There is also a fascinating account of "Tanún" of the "Beni As", namely Tahnun bin Shakhbut Al Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1818 to 1833: "an enterprising character, who possessed considerable power, and maintained a regular force of four hundred men, very well armed and equipped. Small as this number may appear, it was sufficient to give him considerable influence over his rivals …" (vol. 1 pp. 257-8). There is also an intriguing account of Tahnun's friendly reception of a group of British surveying officers (Wellsted evidently among them) who, on visiting his territory in 1828, were invited to participate in "wrestling, leaping, and other athletic exercises" with the local Arabs (p. 259). Wellsted's book was "the fullest account of the area then published" (Burrell), and remains valued: "Wellsted was an acute observer and not blinded by prejudice or ignorance in his description of the local people. His accounts of the geography of Oman, particularly the irrigation systems and the way of life in remote mountain tracts, continue to be important as a unique description of the country at an early date" (ODNB).

- 8vo (22 x 14 cm.): [2], x, 358 pages; two lithographed plates by Formentin & Cie., with frontispiece entitled "Insulaire de Manille" and plate following chapter XII (p. [178]) entitled "Femme de Manille". Bound in original blue printed paper wrappers, uncut, spine worn, with pp. 320-358 loose but holding; occasional foxing and spotting. VERY RARE AND COMPLETE FIRST EDITION OF DOBELL'S TRAVELS THROUGH CHINA, INDOCHINA AND NORTH VIETNAM, THE PHILIPPINES, AND HAWAII. An Irish-born adventurer in Russian service, Peter Dobell (1772-1852) embarked in 1812 on a long journey from Kamchatka across Siberia to Tomsk. The resulting work, Travels in Kamtchatka and Siberia (1830), contains a detailed and idiosyncratic account of his journey, painting an affectionate picture of the region and its people. Dobell also lived in China for many years, and his equally detailed account of this seven-year sojourn first appeared in Russian in 1833. Dobell gives opinionated observations on topics such as Chinese society, customs, traditions, trade and medicine, with additional chapters describing his visits to North Vietnam, the Philippines, and Hawaii. The present translation by Prince Emmanuel Galitzin (1804-1853) from the original Russian edition into French proved popular enough to warrant a reprint, which appeared in 1842.

        Wilhelm Tell (?).

      - Akvarell. Signerad: "C Wahlbom". 24,3 × 16,4 cm.

1838 - Paris, Louis Desessart, 1838. 4 vols. 8vo. Quarter dark green calf over marbled boards, marbled edges and endpapers, spine with raised bands, tooled in gilt and decorated in blind; bound without the map as sometimes the case; a little faded in places, but overall a sturdy, clean and uniform set. First edition. Combe and Tamisier travelled as part of the Saint-Simon movement during the years 1835-1837 in an endeavour to contribute to the exploration of Abyssinia and knowledge of Ethiopian culture. The movement was based on socialist co-operative principles and sought to raise the status of women and workers. They sponsored many expeditions into Egypt, Yemen and other parts of Africa (possibly due to the fact that their leader was arrested for propagating dissent in 1832, and they were looking for a safe haven). In particular, Combe's work is best reputed for his attention to the details of the lives of women and disadvantaged peoples in the countries he visited. Combe went on to gain a reputation as an explorer of Ethiopia, and worked as an informal diplomat. The exploration reports of Combe and Tamisier were read widely amongst those with an interest, and served as a good source of information for the wider attempts to bring regions such as Abyssinia into the trade network.       St. Petersburg: Naval Typ, 1838. 6 vols. [4], iii, 333; [8], 524; [4], 422, [2]; [8], 511; [8], 559; [6], 297 pp. Octavo. In six modern half leather volumes. 19th century ink inscription on the tile page of vol. 2, red ink stamp of a private library on the half-title of vol. 5, occasional soiling, one page with expert repair. Otherwise a very good set. Very rare first and only Russian edition of the account of George Vancouver's (1757-1798) voyage to the northwest coast of America, Hawaii and the southwest coast of Australia in 1790-95. Russian publication was initiated and supervised by Ivan Krusenstern (1770-1846), famous first Russian circumnavigator, and issued on the account of the State Admiralty Department, a unit of the Russian Naval Ministry responsible for its scientific and educational activities, which Krusenstern was a member of since 1808. First two volumes have a printed note on the title page 'Published by the State Admiralty Department', the other four don't have it as they were published after the Admiralty Department had been dismissed and all its functions had been transferred to the Scientific Committee of the Naval Ministry. The original English text was translated by Georg Gustav von Engelhardt (1775-1862), Russian writer and educator of German origin, a director of the Lyceum in Tsarskoye Selo (1816-23), known for the first publication of the account of Ferdinand von Wrangell's travel to the Arctic coast of the Eastern Siberia in 1820-24 (Reise längs der Nordküste von Sibirien und auf dem Eismeer in den Jähren 1820-24; Berlin, 1829). This Russian edition of Vancouver's voyage is supplemented with a preface explaining the importance of the publication, most likely written by Ivan Krusenstern himself; the print run of the Russian edition was 600 copies, (Zapiski Gosudarstvennogo Admiralteyskogo Departamenta, vol. 12, pp. i and xxxvii; vol. 13, pp. xxvi and xli). The book, being of major importance for the navigation along the coast of Russia America, has never been reissued in Russia and has rightfully became a bibliographic rarity. From the Preface to the Russian edition: ''Among all the voyages undertaken by the Englishmen in the last half of the past century for the development of Geography, one of the most important was of course the voyage of Captain Vancouver, both by the plenty of hydrographical studies done in the duration of it, and by the exemplary preciseness and detail, with which this famous navigator surveyed the shores of America, whose description, because of their natural appearance, is met with the utmost difficulties. In this regard Vancouver's voyage deserves attention of every naval officer, but his voyage is especially important for the Russian navigators, because the surveys of Vancouver, encompassing the whole northwest coast of America, mostly explain the position and features of that part of it which now belongs to Russia. Since the time when our ships started navigating the South Sea and visiting Russian-American settlements, the account of Vancouver's voyage had become a necessity, and as a guidance for our officers visiting these shores, it can be as important as the astronomical tables used for the calculation of their observations. But this useful work hasn't existed before in our native language, and therefore remained unavailable for those of our officers who are not fluent enough in foreign languages. This obstacle was even more obvious for the officials of the Russian-American Company, and there was a continuous request from all of them to have the Russian translation of Vancouver's voyage. State Admiralty Department, having been convinced in a great benefit of appearance of this book in Russian and wishing to provide the compatriots with all advantages deriving from it, decided to undertake the publication of such a translation. As a result, now the first part of Vancouver's voyage is being issued, which will be followed by the other parts in short time. For the complete fulfillment of its goal this book should not be expensive, to become useful for everyone; for this reason the Russian translation will not have the engraved views supplementing the English original, as they would significantly increase the price, being only subjects of luxury and curiosity. Equally it has been decided unnecessary to publish in Russian Vancouver's Atlas, because most part of its maps has been included in the two collections of maps, recently published in Russian.''.

Six Months in South Australia; with Some Account of Port Philip [sic] and Portland Bay, in Australia Felix; with Advice to Emigrants; to which is added a Monthly Calendar of Gardening and Agriculture. Adapted to the Climate and Seasons

London, J. Cross, 1838. Octavo, vi, [ii, errata, verso blank], 208, [4], 209-296 (last page blank), [4] (publisher's advertisements) pages plus a small (one page) plan of Victor Harbor and a folding frontispiece map of the Port Lincoln district (201 x 243 mm); both maps are dated January 1839. Original blind-patterned green cloth titled in gilt 'James's South Australia, Port Philip [sic], and Australia Felix. 1839' on the front cover; cloth very lightly marked and slightly rubbed at the extremities, with minimal wear to the corners and the foot of the (slightly sunned) spine; endpapers and the folding map offset and a little foxed, with occasional foxing elsewhere; a very good copy, uncut and with 30 leaves unopened. The small label of 'Henry Hooper, Bookseller, 13 Pall Mall East' is on the front pastedown. Ferguson 2525 (not noting the four-page insert or the small map); McLaren 10400 (basically copying Ferguson). The unnumbered four-page postscript after page 208 provides a summary of Adelaide newspapers 'received up to the 14th July'; in it, mention is made of Eyre's overlanding expedition from Port Phillip to Adelaide in 1838, during which he discovered and named Lake Hindmarsh. In the lengthy appendix, James 'prints the journals of several private expeditions undertaken in the early years of settlement, including an account of Hawdon's famous overlanding expedition as well as other expeditions to Encounter Bay, Lake Alexandrina and to the River Murray' (Wantrup). The 30-page 'Manual of Gardening', almost certainly compiled by the author, is engagingly specific: 'those lofty whirlwinds, so peculiar to the Plains of Cowandilla'; 'this province must become, some day or other, a wine country' and then refers the reader to Busby ... The flyleaf is signed 'Wm Molesworth', and legibly offset onto it is his armorial bookplate (no longer present in fact); on the rear pastedown is a light pencil sketch of a male head and shoulders; the list of errata has two extras added in pencil - all in all, a wonderful provenance. Sir William Molesworth (1810-55), the British politician, was 'returned as member of East Cornwall (December 1832) in the first reformed parliament.... [H]is especial province was colonial policy. He obtained a committee to inquire into the system of transportation in 1837, and wrote the report. He continued to attack the system, and contributed to its ultimate abandonment. In his colonial policy he accepted the theories of Edward Gibbon Wakefield ... He supported all measures for colonial self-government, and protested with his party against the coercive measures adopted by the whig ministry during the Canadian troubles, after championing Lord Durham's policy' (DNB). If his portrait attached to his entry in Wikipedia is anything to go by, the sketch in this copy may well be a self-portrait.

Vorrede restauriert, sonst gutes Exemplar. BEGINN DER ORTHOP?DISCHEN CHIRURGIE! ERSTE AUSGABE. Sehr selten. Rare. Stromeyer is the founder of modern surgery of the locomotor system. He advocated and practised subcutaneous tenotomy for all deformities of the body arising from muscular defects. In Stromeyer's private institute for orthopaedics in Hannover, the treatment of clubfoot was revolutionized. One of his early patients and most enthusiastic proponent of his methods, was the great British surgeon William John Little (1810-1894). The result of tenotomy of his heel cord was so satisfactory to him, that Little remained at Hannover for a period to acquire the knowledge of the technique. At the end of his stay in Germany, he hastened to Berlin to exhibit and teach the new method. He was received by the noted professor Dieffenbach, who in a remarkable short time sectioned 140 tendo-achilles. Little was the first eminent orthopaedic surgeon in the British Isles and the founder of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in London.Stromeyer, professor in Erlangen, Munich, Freiburg, Kiel, and successively surgeon-general of the Schleswig.-Holstein and Hannoverian armies, was also the father of modern military surgery in German. His "Maxims of War-Surgery" made an epoch in military medicine. Stromeyer was also a poet and wrote an attractive autobiography.Garrison-Morton No, 431 Waller 9320 Valentin, Geschg. d.
