History of the revolution in Texas particulary of the war 1835 and '36

New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1838-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. x, 215 pages. Lacks original map. Facsimile of map included. Bound in publisher's brown cloth. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Foxing / spotting throughout. An important book on Texas. Basic Texas Books (151A: "The work begins with an excellent summary of Mexican history from 1821 to 1835, followed by a sketch of Texas history from 1832 to 1835, ending with Cos' retreat from San Antonio. The events of 1836 are described, including quotations from participating Texans and from Mexican accounts, such as Almonte's diary. Of particular value are the account of Santa Anna's capture [and his] confrontation with Houston shortly afterwards. Newell was one of the first to seduce Sam Houston into giving particulars of the campaign... The quotations from participants are of considerable value. The descriptive portions add much to our knowledge of the early Republic.... The account is pro-Texan throughout, but more objective than many other contemporary Anglo-American versions.... Newell describes the towns of the Republic, offers advice to immigrants, analyzes the people of Texas, and projects the future. His predictions, some sage and some ludicrous, are remarkable."         Sketches of young ladies: In which these interesting members of the animal kingdom are classified according to their several instincts, habits, and general characteristics.

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea, & Blanchard 16mo (13.5 cm, 5.3"). 111, [1] pp.. 1838 [with] Dickens, Charles. Sketches of young gentlemen. Dedicated to young ladies. Philadelphia: Carey, Lea, & Blanchard, 1838. 108, [2] pp. First American editions of these two works, together as issued, in the original publisher's cloth. Young ladies and young gentlemen are humorously categorized under their various types: including for the former Romantic, Evangelical, Literary, Manly, Hyperbolical, Abstemious, and others, and for the latter Bashful, Military, Political, Censorious, Funny, etc. While the first work was often attributed to Dickens when originally published anonymously in 1837, it was actually written by humorist Caswall in a voice very much like Dickens's; the second work, first printed in 1838, is => genuine Dickens. Publisher's violet cloth; front cover and spine faded to tan, the former with a printed paper label somewhat chipped, and front cover showing tiny spots of discoloration and pinholes in cloth. Pages age-toned with intermittent mild spotting; a few lower outer corners bumped and middle section with dent to upper outer margin. A copy much read; still both highly readable and => highly entertaining.

An Analysis of the Historical Records of Ancient Egypt with extracts from the treatise on Egyptian Chronology of the late Professor Rask

Sherwood, Gilbert, & Piper, London 1838 - bound in half red leather with marbled paper covered boards, 8vo, cover darkened and shelf worn, but binding is sound. contents generally near fine, but the 6 plates have moderate to heavy foxing, the first plate is in color, the foxing from the plates affects the neighboring pages and there is some offsetting from the plates. The critical examination of chronology is separately paginated from the first part of the book and has pp. 138 while the main part of the book has pp. 427. The front matter of the book has two sections as well with pp. xvi and xviii. one of the front endpapers has a slip pasted down that is written - probably- in Italian and English- there is additional writing on the endpaper with references to other works. All, appear to be of scholarly interest related to this book. There are a few other small pencil and ink markings on the pastedowns and free endpaper. There is also a small old book seller's sticker- appears to say T. Sotheran. Also noted in the book is an old newspaper clipping which has turned brown and affected the neighboring pages.

The Suburban Gardener and Villa Companion

printed for the Author, sold by Longman, Orme, Brown, Green & Longmans, and W. Black of Edinburgh, London 1838 - (8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches). 32pp. of advertisements at end. Approximately 340 wood-engraved illustrations (some full-page). Original blue/green cloth, covers blocked in blind, the flat spine divided into five compartments by blind fillets, lettered in gilt in the second compartment First edition of this well-illustrated and informative work designed to appeal to the swelling ranks of the affluent middle classes in early Victorian England. The aim of this fascinating work by J.C. Loudon, "the most distinguished gardening author of the age" (Andrew Jackson Downing), was to provide help with "the choice of a suburban or villa residence, or of a situation on which to form one; the arrangement and furnishing of the house; and the laying out, planting, and general management of the garden and grounds; the whole adapted for grounds from one perch to 50 acres and upward in extent; and intended for the instruction of those who know little of gardening and rural affairs, and more particularly for the use of ladies" (title). As the title makes clear, the range of this work extends beyond Loudon's normal territory of the garden to include advice on the layout of the rooms and how they should be decorated. The wood-engraved plates range from garden plans, to house plans, to suggested interiors. Lowndes II, p.1399. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Manuscript Court Document Tasmania - Australia

Tasmania, 1838. Launceston, Van Diemen's Land [Tasmania], 27 February 1838. Early court document from the recently independent colony, issuing a fine to a former convict who had become shopowner and settler, for a fraudulent transaction contradicting the "Sale of Bread Act (1834)". Folio. Printed document completed in manuscript. Single leaf, laid watermarked paper measuring approximately 20 x 32 cm. Creased, otherwise in very good condition, a rare surviving document of colonial Tasmania. Illustrating colonial law in the Pacific colonies, in part put in place as economic solutions to food shortages, and strictly regulating consumer transactions, this is an official court conviction which issues a fine to a former felon from England who settled in Van Diemen's Land after his sentence, only to find himself on the wrong side of the law once again several years later. The Sale of Bread Act (1834) was put into effect in. Very Good.

        Timpoochee Barnard, an Uchee Warrior

Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838. Lithograph "Drawn Printed and Coloured at J.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment", after a C.B.King portrait painted in 1825. In excellent condition. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America'. A venerated Yuchi chief, Timpoochee Barnard had a Scotish father and Yuchi mother. He was a commissioned major who valiantly fought under General Jackson against the Creeks in the 1814 Battle of Callabee Creek.. Major Barnard's distinguished military career continued with his gallant participation in the 1818 Seminole War and the battle at Econaffinnah or Natural Bridge of the same year. After travelling to Washington to contest the Indian Springs Treaty of 1825, he settled near Fort Mitchell, where he remained until his death. Of Timpoochee, President Jackson once remarked to his son, "A braver man than your father never lived." Also known as the Choya'ha or Tsoya'ha, meaning 'children of the sun', the Yuchi tribe inhabited the Southeastern region of the United States. They had been practically eliminated by the Creeks and Cherokees and lived uneasily in their midst. McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portraits are largely based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Keokuk, and Black Hawk. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the Native Americans for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Office of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices. His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land. In 1827, he journeyed west again for a treaty with the Chippewa, Menominee , and Winebago in the present state of Michigan. His journeys provided an unparalleled opportunity to become acquainted with Native American tribes. When President Jackson dismissed him from his government post in 1830, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project. Within a few years, he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer who had written extensively about the west. McKenney and Hall saw their work as a way of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture. (Gilreath). Cf. BAL 6934; cf. Bennett p.79; cf. Field 992; cf. Howes M129; cf.         Observations on limes, calcareous cements, mortars, stuccos, and concrete, and on puzzolanas, natural and artificial; together with rules deduced from numerous experiments for making an artificial water cement, equal in efficiency to the best natural cements of England, improperly termed Roman cements; and an abstract of the opinions of former authors on the same subjects.

London: John Weale, Architectural Library. 1838. 8vo., (74) + 288 + 124 + (2)pp., with several woodcut text figures, various neat emphasis marks and a few marginal notes all in pencil by an earlier reader, original blind-stamped cloth, rebacked and lettered gilt. A very good uncut copy. First edition. Skempton 1047. 'The best of all the early British sources for the history of cements and concrete. During the 1820s Pasley conducted exhaustive tests into the properties and characteristics of natural English ('Roman') cement at Chatham, partly in order to manufacture an artificial cement of equal strength. Although his book was primarily intended to publicize this artificial material, he brought his considerable intellectual powers to bear on the whole subject, studying all the existing literature of the time, both British and foreign. His extensive commentary on these works, together with his inclusion of a great deal of first-hand information derived from friends and colleagues, manufacturers as well as engineers, are what makes this book so remarkable.' [Julia Elton, cat.no.6, 1991, p.104]. Sir Charles William Pasley (1780-1861), Army officer and engineer, was Director of Field Instruction at Chatham, 1812-1841. While there he organised improved systems of telegraphing, sapping, mining, pontooning, and exploding gunpowder on land and in water. His treatise on cements and concrete was 'immensely influential' (Elton). It was published in a second edition in 1847.
