        The Workwoman's Guide,

London & Birmingham: Simpkin, Marshall, & Co.; Thomas Evans,, 1838 . containing Instructions to the Inexperienced in Cutting out and Completing those Articles of Wearing apparel, &c., which are usually made at Home; also Explanation on Upholstery, Straw-platting, Bonnet-making, Knitting, &c. By a Lady. Quarto. Original green leaf-sprigged cloth, black leather label to the spine. Engraved frontispiece and 24 other similar plates. A little rubbed, corners through, split to the cloth on the rear joint, spine sunned, neat repairs head and tail of the spine, light browning throughout, some foxing front and back, overall a very good copy. First edition, uncommon, just 4 copies of the first on Copac, together with 4 of the second edition of 1840; only two copies traced at auction. "The Author of the following pages has been encouraged to hope, that, in placing them, after much deliberation, in the hands of a printer, she is tendering an important and acceptable, however humble, service to her own sex, who, in any condition of life, are engaged, by duty, or inclination, in cutting out wearing apparel in a family, or for their poorer neighbours. She trusts, in particular, that Clergymen's Wives, Young Married Women, School-mistresses, and Ladies' Maids may find, in the "Workwoman's Guide", a fast and serviceable friend" (Preface). Widely considered one of the most important needlework manuals of the nineteenth century; "The value of The Workwoman's Guide is that it provides in its text and illustrations the original nineteenth-century instructions for making and cleaning clothing and accessories. Described are hundreds of objects that were stitched from cloth, knitted from yarn, braided, dyed or otherwise converted into utilitarian and ornamental objects of clothing and household furnishing" (Caroline Sloat, American Antiquarian Society), Seligman notes that it also "includes instructions for drafting". But the present work is also set apart by the remarkable breadth of projects that are laid out in painstaking detail, with chapters on upholstery, household receipts, and straw-work. Intended as a practical guide for its contemporary readers, the book offers valuable insights to modern researchers, the section on upholstery, for example, is cited extensively in Edward P. Cooke's important survey Upholstery in America & Europe from the Seventeenth Century to World War I. An excellent copy of this elusive, and highly desirable, guidebook, offered here in publisher's attractive binding, extremely well-preserved.

        Die Infusionsthierchen als vollkommene Organismen.

      - Ein Blick in das tiefere organische Leben der Natur. Leipzig, L. Voss, 1838. 2 volumes (text & atlas). Folio (457 x 335mm). pp. xviii, (4), 547, (1), with 1 engraved separate atlas-title and 64 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary green half calf, gilt ornamented spines with gilt lettering. First and only edition of this splendidly produced work on Infusiora."Ehrenberg's great contribution to biology was his work on the infusiora, the results of which were published originally in a number of brief essays and afterwards in the important and splendid work entitled 'Die Infusionsthierchen' printed in 1838. The result of this and other works of his was that the number of known Infusiora was considerably increased, and their classification essentially advanced" (Nordenskiöld p. 427). The excellent plates are all after Ehrenberg's own drawings. Ehrenberg studied at the University of Berlin (M.D., 1818) and was associated with the university throughout his career. He took part in a scientific expedition (1820–25) to Egypt, Libya, the Sudan, and the Red Sea under the auspices of the university and the Prussian Academy of Sciences. The expedition’s only survivor, he collected about 34,000 animal- and 46,000 plant specimens. With Alexander von Humboldt, he participated in 1829 in an expedition, sponsored by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, to Central Asia and Siberia. For nearly 30 years Ehrenberg examined samples of water, soil, sediment, blowing dust and rock and described thousands of new species, among them well-known flagellates such as Euglena, ciliates such as Paramecium aurelia and Paramecium caudatum, and many fossils, in nearly 400 scientific publications. He was particularly interested in a unicellular group of protists called diatoms, but he also studied, and named, many species of radiolaria and foraminifera. After his death in 1876, his collections of microscopic organisms were deposited in the Museum für Naturkunde at the University of Berlin. The "Ehrenberg Collection" includes 40,000 microscope preparations, 5,000 raw samples, 3,000 pencil and ink drawings, and nearly 1,000 letters of correspondence. Some occasional foxing in the text volume, not in the atlas volume.         ALS regarding a Chronometer Recently Acquired to survey boundaries of Maine & the New Republic of Texas, by this early member of the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers.

Bangor, Maine: 1838 - Signed letter from Major James D. Graham, addressed to "House of Wm. Bond & Son, Boston", on letter with the blind stamp "Stationers Hall Washington", dated July 21, 1838, Bangor Maine, regarding chronometers he recently obtained. Graham, an 1817 graduate of West Point, was a prominent topographical engineer. From 1819 to 1821 he served as Lt. and First Assistant on Stephen Long's western expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, on which the topographer William Swift's map was based. The Swift map greatly influenced migration to the west, being one of the most widely available of the early maps of the westward route. He later served as astronomer of the newly created Corps of Topographical Engineers, on the surveys that established the boundary line between the United States & Canada as well as the boundary for the newly formed Republic of Texas (1839 - 1840). He was also the Principal Astronomer and "Head of the Scientific Corps," on the part of the United States, for the joint demarcation of the Boundary between the United States and Mexico, under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, 1850-51. In 1858-59, he discovered the existence of a lunar tide. In the letter Graham thanks J. Cranch of William Bond & Son of Boston for the chronometer, a "Hatton 564" and notes that the weather has been too cloudy recently for him to make observations with it. He anticipates giving a better account of the chronometer in comparison to the Parkinson & Frodsham (British firm) he already owns, the following month. The House of Representatives document no. 70, dated Feb. 1842 states that 452 transit observations were made "aided by three excellent chronometers, for the determination of the true meridian direction." Graham refers to to multiple chronometers in his letter- "When I see you in Boston, which will probably be next month, I can give a better account of them all than at present, as I have not yet reduced all the observations made with them." The chronometers mentioned in this letter of 1838 were likely used in the surveying of both borders. The firm of William Bond & Son was established in Boston in 1793 and became one of the best known American chronometer makers; the firm made the first seagoing chronometer during the War of 1812 when the market was dominated by British chronometer makers. Interestingly, the chronometer Graham refers to in the letter to Bond is a British made Hatton model, a firm which made marine chronometers for the East India Company. The Republic existed from April 21, 1836 to February 19, 1846 and was formed by the defeat of Mexico in the Texas Revolution. A commission was established to survey the boundary between the two nations in 1838 but the survey was not completed until June 1841. The joint boundary commission included two U.S. Army surveyors- Major J. D. Graham & Lieutenant Thomas Lee, and a civilian civil engineer named G. G. Meade (who later commanded the Army of the Potomac at the battle of Gettysburg.) Its boundaries encompassed an area that included all of the present day state of Texas, as well as parts of present day New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming. Traces of repairs on verso of right edge with old sticky tape; closed tear through last name only of signature. 8 x 10". [Attributes: Signed Copy]
