Inscriptiones Urbis Brixiae et Agri Brixiani Latinae iussu Athenaei Brixiani permissu Academiae Berolinensis ex Corporis inscriptionum Latinarum volumine V. Seorsum edidit Theodorus Mommsen, Berolini, ex Officina Ungeriana, MDCCCLXXIIII

Opera importante e molto rara a trovarsi completa. Very important work dedicated to the antiquities of Brescia and the north of Italy, full description on request. Volume I sciolto con copertina logora e mutila e leggere fioriture; mancanti le tavv. 38 - 40. Vol. II solido ed intonso

Milano: Gio Ricordi [PNs 9678-9689; 9692; 9697; 9697 1/2; 9960-9961], 1838. First Edition. Scarce. OCLC no. 229882955. Giuseppe Angeloni et al., Gaetano Donizetti, p. 178. Laterza: Il Catalogo numerico Ricordi 1857, pp. 326, 335. L'assedio di Calais, to a libretto by Cammarano after Pierre Du Belloy, was first performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on November 19, 1836. "In the 19th century L'assedio di Calais had no more than a single run of performances at the S Carlo between 1836 and 1840. An enterprising recording by Opera Rara in 1989 opened the public's eyes to the work's many merits. Originally designed by Donizetti as a passport to the Paris Opéra, it contains an integral divertissement (in which however only two of the four dances are Donizetti's). This was then an unusual feature as almost all Italian operas of the period were performed as double bills along with full-length ballets. The first two acts of L'assedio contain some excellent ensembles, particularly the prayer at the close of Act 2 (‘O sacro polve'), sung as the hostages leave the city hall." William Ashbrook in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Half contemporary brown morocco with marbled boards, light brown printed title label, most probably from publisher's original wrappers, laid down to upper. 1f.         Manuscript - Primary Source Document of Appraisal for Compensation Claim of Slaves of Du Piail Estate

St. Lucia, 1838. Saint Lucia, 1 May 1838. Original manuscript document pertaining to the slave compensation claims made for the little-known Du Piail Estate in the Borough (parish) of Laborie, Saint Lucia, being a contemporary true copy extracted and translated from the French appraisement made in 1831, and used to determine the slave compensation to be paid to Marie Rose H. Roudier, widow of a planter and senior commissioner Pierre Antoine Joseph Roudier, and also to counterclaimants, two Forsyth brothers. Docketed to verso is dated one week prior to the claim decision date. Qto. 13 pages on four double-leafs watermarked J Morbey & Co 1834. Leafs measure approximately 20,5 x 32 cm. Very good, original condition, conceivably the only surviving record of this little-known plantation and of its slaves. Not found in the authoritative UCL database 'Legacies of Slave Ownership,' there is little to no documentation about Du Piail estate and its operations, however the present document provides its ownership history, a register of slaves, and general indications of its whereabouts. This may be the only surviving record of the plantation and its slaves. Although the plantations are not named, Mrs. Marie Rose (Haurie) Roudier does appear in the UCL database as having been awarded 3 compensations in Saint Lucia, all of which were granted on 7 May 1838, six days after the present document was signed by a filing clerk. "St Lucia Claims 755 and 756 in Laborie Parish" as they are recorded, are most likely for the Du Piail and La Vallée Estates described herein. Mrs. Roudier received £310 for one, £385 for the other. As owner-in-fee Mrs. Roudier further received nearly £2100 for Saphir estate, which is also mentioned in the present document, and which was situated in what the 'Fourth District'. At the same time, counterclaimants appeared to stake a monetary award from the Saphir Estate, merchant George Forsyth and Reverend Morris Forsyth, brothers and executors of James Forsyth as judgment creditors. They are mentioned in the final paragraph of these pages. The present primary source document was made at the request of a post-emancipation claimant, and successful awardee of compensation for former slave-ownership income, from a little-known Saint Lucia estate belonging to the claimant's late husband, a senior commissioner of the Laborie district, and to her brother who were co-proprietors, both of whom had since passed away. The claimant is Ms. Marie Rose Roudier (née Haudier), widow of a planter and senior commissioner Pierre Antoine Joseph Roudier who died in his estate home on 7 May 1831, sister of Mr. Jean Pierre Haurie who died from an illness on 22 March 1831, and the sole heiress both estates. Drawing from an appraisement of the land and the slaves, made in 1831 following the deaths of Mrs. Roudier's husband and her brother, the rather complex task ensues, of attributing "ownership right" of specific previously-enslaved persons to one of four parties (the co-proprietors and each of their wives), in order to then to allot a credit amount payable for the financial loss incurred by freeing the said slave. Over and above those appraised, Mrs. Roudier claims that there were twenty-eight (28) additional slaves connected to the estate, two of which were her personal slaves purchased for her by her husband. All 28 individuals are named, several being children born into slavery. Each woman, man, and child, has been assigned a European name, their age estimated, and, an individual monetary value to the owner. Some of the slaves are described as the "private property of - " illustrating the genuine and misguided eighteenth and nineteenth belief that is was morally acceptable for one human to claim ownership of another. The appraisal is presented in the island's obsolete currency, the Saint Lucia Livre, which would be replaced by the British Pound in 1851. Evidently an early estate established by the French, according to this document, Plantation Du Piail, District of Laborie, Saint Lucia originally belonged to Jean Baptiste Cherpy [a priest from Avranches, born circa 1679], who is an ancestor of the Roudiers. It is connected to Plantation La Vallée through co-ownership between his descendants. As the buildings at Du Piail became derelict they were abandoned by commissioner Roudier who instead used new buildings constructed in 1808 on the plantation La Vallée, then his father's estate. Details of hereditary ownership is further outlined in the manuscript. Neighbouring estates were owned by families Lestrade and Stier. Excerpts from the manuscript: "Extract from the Inventory of the Property belonging to the Successions or Estate and Partnership of the late Messieurs Roudier and Haurie... which inventory was drawn up through the Ministry... on the sixteenth of June one thousand eight hundred and thirty-one." "16 June 1831... At the Request and in the presence of Mrs. Marie Rose Haurie widow of Pierre Antoine Joseph Roudier late Planter and Senior Civil Commissary in the District of Laborie where he died the seventh of May last past.... The said Lady being a Proprietress of real Estate and residing in the same District... sole and only heiress of Mr. Jean Pierre Haurie her late Brother who died being... on the twenty-second of March last past... having been in community of Property with the said Mr. Roudier her late husband deceased..." "... It must also be observed that the plantation or estate Du Piail which the said Lady Requirant and Mr Haurie had inherited in the Right of the minor Cherpy their nephew consisted of several plantations of different origins wit Le Piail properly so called whereon Mr. Cherpy the father had all his buildings - Le Vallée which had been by the grandmother of the minor Cherpy subsequent to the decease of her first husband Mr. Gabriel Cherpy and fifteen squares which arose from the succession or estate of Mr. Devezien the grand maternal uncle of the said minor." "... the estate of Mr. Haurie her Brother and also... the community of property established between her and her late Husband... partnership hereinafter mentioned created between Messieurs Roudier and Haurie... the state of Indivision or New Distribution... the said Lady Requirant making all Protestations and Reservations for the preservation of her Rights as well against the Estate of her Brother as against the Estate of her Husband. "The Lady Requirant and the Misses Roudier [her two daughters] declared that independently of the abovementioned slaves there are twenty-eight others who were employed in cultivating the Plantations remaining undivided between the said Mrs. Roudier and her late Brother but which did not however belong to the tacit Partnership... two of the said Slaves named Calixle and Amelie or Emilie were the private Property of Mr. Haurie. That two others the Negro François Joseph otherwise called Papatou and the negress Sophie were the private property of Mrs. Roudier... the twenty-four other slaves were purchased by Mr. Roudier with his own private monies or have since been born of negresses purchased by him... the Slaves in Question who were thenceforth declared to be employed on the Plantation Dur Saphir as having been let on hire to Messieurs Poudrier and Haurie..." "Nina surnamed Bonda an African Negress thirty five years old valued at the sum of three thousand Livres say..." "Alfred surnamed Le Grand son of the same a negro Boy five years old valued at the sum of Twelve Hundred Livres" "Aneville Surnamed Cilé... eleven years old... 2500" "Nota - this young female slave does not appear on the Copy of numerical statements delivered to the undersigned notaries which can only arise from mere omission for she must be included in the same class as her mother." "Bruno surnamed Rat... creole negro... 4000" "Land and House in the Borough of Laborie: A House made up of wood. Double roofed measuring twenty nine feet and half in front...by thirty feet and half depth containing on the Ground Floor a Parlour and two small rooms with a Gallery fronting the yard... two bedrooms... pretty good but in want of many great repairs... altogether valued... Livres say... 3150." "... a short time before his decease Mr. Haurie her Brother manifested a wish to emancipate the said negro Emilie... which has been granted to her..." "The present collated extract has been delivered to ... attorney of Messieurs Morris and George Forsyth the Testament executors of the late Mr. James Forsyth... a Judgment of the Royal Court of this Island [Saint Lucia] bearing date the third of February one thousand eight-hundred and thirty-five." [Docketing annotation to Verso, part II] "May 1, 1938. Orig. left with Mrs. Hurie [Marie Rose Roudier née Haurie?] on award of Compensation for 2 slaves of Mr. Haurie to Messrs Forsyths heirs Judgment Creditors." End excerpts. [Sugar being the principal production for export, in 1817, the slave population in the District of Laborie alone, was 1,874 including Africans and Creoles, the latter being the majority.] In 1832, before the abolition of slavery, there were 653 sugar estates in cultivation and over 500 coffee plantations in the British West Indies. The British Slavery Abolition Act provided grant totalling £20 million to compensate the slave-owners for the loss of their "human property"! Almost all the men and women awarded compensation under the 1833 Abolition Act are listed in what is called a Parliamentary Return, an official reply by a government body to a request from an MP. The return is often referred to as the Slavery Abolition Act: An account of all sums of money awarded by the Commissioners of Slave Compensation while its full title is Accounts of slave compensation claims; for the colonies of Jamaica. Antigua. Honduras. St. Christopher's. Grenada. Dominica. Nevis. Virgin Islands. St. Lucia. British Guiana. Montserrat. Bermuda. Bahamas. Tobago. St. Vincent's. Trinidad. Barbadoes. Mauritius. Cape of Good Hope. It can be found in House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1837-1838 (215) vol. 48 and is 365 pages long. Laborie, Saint Lucia: Prior to 1758 the village now known as Laborie was referred to as "Islet a Caret" or "Turtle Island" based on the view of a small islet visible from the shore, where sea turtles nested. In 1758 a devastating hurricane destroyed most of the churches on the island including the parish church. The Baron de Laborie, who was Governor of Saint Lucia from 1784 to 1789, actively pursued the reestablishment of the original parishes. The village became known as Laborie in his honour, and the church was the first to be rebuilt with a contribution from the Baron. Today the village of Laborie arguably features the most scenic waterfront on the island with a tree lined beach that extends its entire breadth. An active fishing industry primarily supports the village. In the 1780's the main crop cultivated in St. Lucia was cotton, which was being grown by nearly half of the island's estates. Coffee and cocoa production was also slightly higher than sugar production. By 1815, Soufriere, Vieux-Fort and Laborie were the dominant districts of cotton, coffee and cocoa crops, superseding the previously prolific Anse La Raye. As sugar production replaced cotton and coffee as the dominant crop, the dominant district changed. Soufriere became the dominant district producer of sugar; it was also the main producer of coffee. In Laborie, cassava was also a principle crop. St. Lucia also exported rum, molasses and logwood but the period 1826-1834 there was a decline in quantity of the products exported. It has been stated that the number of enslaved labour and livestock needed on sugar plantations exceeds three times that needed on any other crop plantation. Therefore, the majority of labour entering the island of Saint Lucia was employed at the production of sugar as oppose to coffee or cotton. In 1817, the slave population of the district or parish of Laborie alone, was 1,874 including Africans and Creoles, the latter being the majority. Additionally, seventy-four slaves worked in the town of Laborie. (The same number of slaves were registered in the year 1815.) . Very Good.

Sartor Resartus; The Life and opinions of

London - Saunders and Otley, 1838 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition in book form of this novel by Thomas Carlyle, originally serialised in Fraser's magazine. Very scarce and lovely to see in the original binding. The novel takes the form of supposed commentary and reflections by a German philosopher called Diogenes Teufelsdrckh (which, incidentally, means God-born devil-dung). The philosophical thoughts are iterwoven with commentary by an English 'editor', who could be characterised as sceptical. The work can be seen as a parody of Hegel and other German idealists. However, Carlyle does not shrink from expressing truths of his own. The novel was unusual and innovative in the same vein as one of its principal inspirations: Tristram Shandy. It is meta in the sense that it passes ironic judgement on its own structures, and is ambiguous as to its presentation of the truth. The book was extremely influential within literary culture. According to Roger L. Tarr The influence of Sartor Resartus upon American literature is so vast, so pervasive, that it is difficult to overstate. Jorges Luis Borges also credited it with inspiring some of his own fascintating short stories. He said I discovered, and was overwhelmed by, Thomas Carlyle. I read Sartor Resartus, and I can recall many of its pages; I know them by heart. The influence of the work can be seen in stories such as Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote, The Garden of Forking Paths, and Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius. The work is organised into two books within the one volume. A scarcefirst edition of this unique and seminal work, beloved by some of the best authors who came to read it. This copy is from a library, though with none of the usual plates or marks. There is only one small library stamp to the front pastedown. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Collated: complete. Condition: In the original cloth with paper covered boards. Externally a little worn, with general wear to the extremities, boards, and spine. The spine label is defective, and damaged with minor loss. The text is affected. The front joint is starting, but still reasonably firm. There is a library stamp to the front pastedown. There is a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper, and another to the title page. Very slightly worn at the foredge, otherwise generally clean and bright. Generally firmly bound. Overall: GOOD.

Disegni d?alcune opere eseguite in occasione della fausta venuta in Lombardia di S. M. l?imperatore e re Ferdinando Primo. Milano, Tipografia e libreria Pirotta, 1838

Pirotta, 1838. in - folio (mm 461x330). Beautiful presentation copy of the original edition of this album. Illustrated by 4 finely hand - coloured lithographed plates by Bertelli after Chiappa, showing the temporary monuments built to celebrate the entrance in Milan of the emperor Ferdinand I, that will be crowned king of the Lombardo - Veneto on September 6th 1838 in this city. Contemporary red limp roan, gilt border round sides; on the front cover gilt lettering addressed to Mr. Ignazio Lucini, Government's secretary. Beautiful copy, some minor foxing throughout. Inside the volume 6 flying leaves with manuscript notes and contemporary architectural drawings.
