City of London School. The View of the Building erecting under their Superintendance is respectfully dedicated by their obedt. Hble. Servt. J.B. Bunning Archt.

G.E. Madeley, 3 Wellington St, Strand, [c.1837]., London, - The first school to teach science Lithograph with original colour, trimmed to text, false margin to lower neatline. City of London Boys' School grew out of a fifteenth century bequest left to educate sons of London citizens. In 1823, the Corporation of the City decided that the excess income from the bequest should be used to found a permanent school. The original site, shown here, was in Milk Street near Cheapside, designed by James Bunstone Bunning and completed in 1837. The school was unusual in that it accepted non-Anglican and Jewish pupils, and was a day rather than boarding school. It was also the first school in England to include science on the curriculum. James Bunstone Bunning (1802-63) was a British architect, and from 1843 acted as Clerk of the City's Works to the City of London. He is best known for designing the Coal Exchange and remodeling Newgate Prison. Image: 340 by 480mm (13.5 by 19 inches). Sheet: 420 by 515mm (16.5 by 20.25 inches). BM 1880,1113.3558.

        Hybrid Grouse. Tetrao hybridus

[by the Author, London 1837 - Lithograph, coloured by hand, by J & E. Gould, printed by C. Hullmandel. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. A beautiful image from John Gould's 'The Birds of Europe': a work which, according to Hyman, 'included some of the most remarkable bird drawings ever made'. This plate is from the second of John Gould's great ornithological portfolios. Gould undertook this work not only hoping to build on the success of his first work (on the birds of the Himalaya mountains), but also in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. It was his opinion that too much attention had focused on the exotic, whilst the beauty of the more local species was ignored. He wrote in the preface to the work from which this image comes: 'It has been frequently remarked that the productions of distant countries have received a much larger share of attention than those objects by which we are more immediately surrounded; and it is certainly true, that while numerous and costly illustrations have made us acquainted with the Ornithology of most other parts of the world, the Birds of Europe, in which we are, or ought to be, more interested, have not received that degree of attention which they naturally demand. The present work has been undertaken to supply that deficiency.' The images in this work are the first to be published by Gould that show the liveliness of treatment that was to become such a feature of later works. This break from the traditional methods of bird depiction can be largely attributed to the influence of and contributions from Edward Lear: 'They are certainly among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made, [for] it is evident that Lear endowed them with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, his energetic curiosity, his self-conscious clumsiness and his unselfconscious charm'. (Hyman) Cf. Anker 169; cf.Balis 101; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 102; cf.Nissen IVB 371; cf.Sauer 2; cf.Zimmer p. 251.

Sanchuniathonis Historiarum Phoeniciae libros novem Graece versos a Philone Byblio, edidit Latinaque versione donavit F. Wagenfeld.

Seimi kaiso [trans.: Elements of Experimental Chemistry]. Trans. by Yoan Udagawa

14 finely detailed full-page woodcuts, all heightened in grey, blue, and/or brown wash (one heightened with silver). 21 vols. 8vo, orig. patterned embossed wrappers, orig. block printed title label on upper covers, new stitching. Tokyo: 1837-45-47. First edition in Japanese of William Henry's The Elements of Experimental Chemistry, which first appeared in English as An Epitome of Chemistry (London: 1801). It was a very successful book with numerous revised and enlarged editions; by the sixth edition of 1810, the Epitome… changed its name to The Elements… which also enjoyed numerous editions and translations. "Seimi Kaiso plays an important role in the remarkable story of Western scientific influences in Japan. When this work first appeared in 1837, Japan had been almost completely isolated from the larger world for two centuries. The Japanese were not allowed to travel abroad, and only the Chinese and the Dutch were permitted to enter Japan. From about 1720, however, a group of Japanese scholars began studying and translating Dutch scientific literature that reported achievements taking place throughout Europe. Known in Japanese as the Rangakusha, meaning 'scholars of the Dutch school,' this group made certain that the advances of modern scientific knowledge would not elude Japan… "Udagawa Yoan, (1797-1846), a Rangakusha and younger member of the learned Udagawa family, is said to have introduced chemistry into Japan with Seimi Kaiso. It was based on a Dutch translation of William Henry's popular book, first published in 1800 [sic] as An Epitome of Chemistry and later as The Elements of Experimental Chemistry. Re-working the Dutch text into Japanese, however, was much more than mere translation. Yoan had to develop new terminology to describe chemical substances and processes, expanding the Japanese vocabulary of chemistry as he deepened his own understanding of the science."-from the Corning Museum of Glass's website. This work describes for the first time in detail the revolutionary findings and theories of Lavoisier in Japan. Udagawa coined a number of scientific terms which are still in current use in Japan, including those for "oxygen," "hydrogen," "nitrogen," "carbon," "platinum," "oxidation," "reduction," "saturation," "dissolution," "analysis," "element," etc. Henry (1774-1836), studied under Black at Edinburgh University and became a partner in his father's chemical works. He lectured on chemistry in London. The illustrations are particularly well wood-engraved. A particularly fine set. The final three volumes - Gaihen [trans.: Supplement] - are dated 1847. ❧ D.S.B., VI, pp. 284-86.

Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, Containing Upwards of Six Hundred and Fifty Figures and Descriptions of Figures Foreign Insects, Interspersed with Remarks and Reflections on Their Nature and Properties

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1837. New Edition" (2nd.) of the original 1770-1787 publication "brought down to the present state of the science with the systematic character of each species, synonyms, indexes, and other additional matter. three-quarter brown morocco lettered in gilt over dark green cloth covered boards. Some rubbing to covers, front endpapers of volume I cracked over hinge, occasional minor foxing on text pages, plates clean and crisp and colours strong. Quarto. Three volumes Profusely illustrated with 150 hand coloured plates (all present) Considered the better and more accurate edition Dru Drury (1725–1804) was a silversmith with a passion for entomology. His profitable business enabled him to spend significant amounts of money on his hobby and over a thirty year period he built up a famous collection of over 11,000 insect specimens. As well as collecting English insects, he acquired more "exotic" samples by persuading the officers of ships sailing to other continents and other travellers to collect insects on his behalf; for this they were paid 6d per insect 'whatever the size'. Illustrations of natural history was published in three parts between 1770 and 1782. The illustrations were based on specimens in his collection. The hand-coloured copperplate engravings were beautifully executed by Moses Harris; he was responsible for illustrating several books of natural history by various authors, as well as his own works. Drury assures the reader in the preface that 'the utmost care and nicety has been observed, both in the outlines, and engraving. Nothing is strained, or carried beyond the bounds nature has set'. His descriptions often lack scientific precision; but his notices of the libellulidæ and of the insects of Sierra Leone are specially valuable. Some of his papers came into Mr. Westwood's hands. Linnæus, Kirby, and Fabricius each held Drury in high estimation, and named insects after him. Together with Pallas, the younger Linnæus, and Haworth, they were wont to correspond with him. His ‘Exotic Entomology’ was in part translated into German, and annotated by G. W. F. Panzer, 1785[Nissen 1160].

View of the port of Sebastopol and the Russian Imperial Fleet.

1837 - Original drawing in ink on 4 sheets of paper joint together, mounted, framed and glazed. Dimensions of the panorama: 22 x 130 cm. Overall dimensions: 35.5 x 145 cm. Large original drawing showing the departure of the Russian Imperial Fleet from the port of Sebastopol on the Black Sea on 22 August 1837. This is a rare contemporary full view of the bay and the port in its heyday, before the dramatic changes brought by the Crimean War in 1853-56. It was at the time undergoing a rapid development under the direction of the Commander of the Ports of the Black Sea, Admiral M.P. Lazarev. The drawing was lithographed after the French artist Auguste Raffet (1804-60) and published under No. 48 in the famous work by Anatole Demidoff "Voyage dans la Russie meridionale et la Crimee, par la Hongrie, la Valachie et la Moldavie" in 1848. The lithographed plate follows the sketch in every detail, additionally showing a close-up of a pasture field and a road on the foreground. Raffet accompanied Count Anatoliy Nikolaevich Demidov, Prince of San Donato (1812-70) on his expedition to Ukraine and Crimea, the Russian territorial acquisitions in the south, that he launched in 1837 at his own expense. The trip lasted a little over four months during which time Raffet produced numerous sketches. He quickly decided to publish them, discussing it with the lithographers Gihault brothers on his return to France. The account was first published in 1840 in a reduced format and with only 27 plates, without this view of Sebastopol. The full-scope publication was delayed by ten years, due to the artist's perfectionism. The results were astonishing: Raffet's images are a fascinating depiction of the landscape and architecture of a region little known to western Europeans at that time.

Ampie note esegetiche in calce. Darlow e Moule, 5600 ("His pure Italian style is not vitiated by French influence"); N. Bingen, Philausone (1500-1660), nr. 133..

Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane

Paris, Librairie de A. Pougin, 1837. Duodecimo, three volumes bound as one, viii, 233; iv, 220 and iv, 236 pages. Contemporary half calf and marbled papered boards; leather slightly rubbed and bumped, with slight wear to the corners and light tidemarks to the leather on the panels near the spine; marbled paper heavily rubbed and a little marked; light waterstain to the top lefthand corner throughout the book, and to the top righthand corner of the front half, staining the leading edge a little; a very good copy. Inscribed in ink on an early binder's blank 'Bought at the sale / of Governor Gawler's effects / May 27, 1841. J F'. Unfortunately it is not James Hurtle Fisher - we have checked! There are approximately 40 male JFs in the 1841 South Australian census (and Fisher is not listed), and easily half as many women, so we leave the detective work to those with more spare time. A name on both the pastedown and front flyleaf has been blacked out at a very early stage; we suspect underneath the black ink it reads 'George Gawler' but again we leave the forensics to the experts. One thing we can say is that when Colonel George Gawler (1795-1869) was summarily dismissed from his post as South Australia's second governor on 11 May 1841 when Captain George Grey knocked on his door, he lost no time in clearing the decks. The 'Register' of the following Saturday, 22 May, contains a large advertisement for a public sale to be conducted by the Adelaide Auction Company, acting 'under instructions from Colonel Gawler to sell ... on Wednesday next, at twelve precisely, his surplus Furniture and effects'. Before the 'very elegant and useful' carriage and 'A lot of pigs', but after the superb piano with 'extra set of Strings, Oilcloth Cover, Canterbury, Tuning Key and pair of elegant Music Stools', a pair of globes, 'iron bedsteads (brass ornaments) with mattress, bolster, and pillows' and '300 ounces of useful plate, in spoons, forks, fish slices, butter knives, teapots, ladles, &c.', there are 'About 200 volumes of books'. This item is one of them. Consult the Australian Dictionary of Biography for the potted history of Gawler's 31 months in South Australia, from his arrival in October 1838 with the task of rendering 'viable the experiment in systematic, self-supporting colonization' until he was abandoned as the scapegoat under 'the combined weight of outraged Wakefield theorists, commissioners anxious to whitewash themselves, and enemies of the colony'. He left Adelaide a month later on the 'Dumfries'. This small volume, with its curiously affecting inscription inserted on the day by someone with a sense of history in the making, is a wonderful footnote to the story.
